Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

There's a new Dish TV commercial which combines things to show on TV. The latest one is NFL Football and the Real Housewives. Unfortunately, they're all the New jersey ones, who are a bunch of trashy Soprano posers. Of course, a football player does a table flip in front of an incredulous housewife who did the "prostitution whore" table flip. 🙄

So Outback Steakhouse isn't even pretending to have Aussie food on its menu? Nashville chicken? Seriously?

Were they even pretending to serve Australian food, whatever that is, in the commercials?

I cannot stand this commercial for Knix bras.  My first problem is that shoving your boobs into these bras does not look any more comfortable than underwire bras.  Secondly, I hate the woman who puts her sweater on slowly while admiring her boobs/Knix bra.  Who puts a sweater on like that?  Hate.

Never tried Knix bras so I can't speak to the comfort of them.  What bugs me about those commercials is them acting like wire-free bras are something they've just invented rather than something I've been wearing for decades.

Given that Outback has never actually been an Australian restaurant, it doesn't surprise me.  They were started by a couple of guys in Florida.

I've been wearing underwire for years (I'm a full c-cup) and have never experienced any digging or discomfort - unless the fabric ripped and the wire poked out - ouch!

You're fortunate.  When I wear underwires, they dig into my armpits despite my wearing the correct size.  They pinch and dig and are the spawn of Satan as far as I'm concerned.

Me too! I'm 71 and have never worn an underwire. I've been wearing the same style Warner's s bra for decades.

The new Dr. Rick one where he say the woman was wrong to leave a message rather than send a text.  Maybe she was calling about something too complicated for a text.  If she was calling anyway, instead of texting, why wouldn't she leave a voicemail?  What's she supposed to do: hang up and send a text?  That's stupid as hell when she's already on the phone.

I agree it is stupid but nobody seems to leave a message anymore and lots of people seem to call first & text later, usually saying that they called 🙄 .

I think they styled themselves as an Australian themed restaurant although they do tend to call their fries Aussie fries and I'm sure there are others where they use "poetic license" or whatever they call it nowadays.

You can blame/thank this movie and the whole "shrimp on the barbie" craze of the 1980's.

I know. Most brands sell both underwire and wireless bras. They act like they invented the underwear they advertise, too.

I said the same thing.  Maybe it was something not worth calling about, so she should have sent a text or email instead from the beginning, or there was some meat to it but she couched it inside so much unnecessary information (like her phone number) that the message took a ridiculously long time to listen to.  But we never hear the rest of it, so he just comes off as pissy about the very existence of a voicemail message.

Unless you get to the point, my preference is that you hang up and not leave a message.  When I look at my phone again, I'll call back.

She's Kathryn Hahn. I know her as Lily from "Crossing Jordan."  She's in WandaVision, too. I don't know why she'd agree to portray someone who doesn't know camels from llamas.

This one has been airing for a while so apologies if I am late to the party. I looked up today when the Tropicana commercial with the murder of crows was airing and I... don't get it? Is Tropicana orange juice supposed to distract you from what looks to be a rather aggressive flock of birds? How does this market the juice?

I think it's some kind of odd homage to Hitchcock.

Yeah, I got that, but what does that have to do with OJ? And still, why would that be a good association? The Birds is not a feel-good film and I think this commercial just implies that their OJ makes you pretty dimwitted.

Ugh, a McDonald’s chicken sandwich commercial in which some idiot lady is laugh-chewing with her big stupid mouth open. I hate it!

Was it Crocodile Dundee that started it? I remember there some sort of "down under" fad/fascination at the time and quite a few in TV commercials.

It's just that old trope about being able to face all kinds of adversity if you drink our O.J. in the morning.

He is pissy about the very existence of a voicemail message. His point is that "no one" wants to get a voicemail, and whatever she said in the voicemail should have been in a text.

Then I think he's got issues, too, not just her.  The voice mail has already picked up, but she's supposed to hang up and type out a text instead of just leaving a message?  If he doesn't want voicemail messages, period, that's fine, but in that case he shouldn't have voicemails enabled on his phone.

The content of her message might be a problem -- given how it started, I can imagine it being rambling and not getting to the point until the end -- but since there's no indication his VM greeting said "Please don't leave me a message, send me a text instead" the simple fact she left one isn't an offense he should conduct a tutorial on.

Yeah, that Dr. Rick commercial really annoys me as well. I guess I’m just old, but I don’t text professionals unless they indicate that’s their preferred way to communicate, or they text me first. This includes my son‘s teachers, a therapist that he saw briefly, etc. Texting to me is still a bit chummy and informal. Unless Dr. Rick had told them to text him, I would’ve called and left a voicemail, too.

And to spin it out even more, I think a lot of younger people have no idea how to leave an accurate, precise voicemail.I know the commercial is just being funny, but it’s a skill I don’t think we necessarily need to be making fun of.

Now get off my lawn. Lol

And if what she wanted to say couldn't easily fit in a text, that would be stupid.  I'll leave it at that except to say that the last 3 or 4 Dr. Rick commercials have far more annoying than amusing.  How I long for the days of "Defense does win championships!".

I don't know anyone personally who seems to care if what they say fits within one text, especially people who treat the send button like a period. I was going to say that it's not like people pay per text anymore, but maybe that still exists?

I agree, though, that the Dr. Rick commercials are getting old. They need to come up with a different gimmick.

What bugs me about the Dr. Rick commercials, is that none of the actors look so young that it would be weird for them to act like the middle aged people they are.

Then we should have heard the rest of her message, indicating it was something not worth calling about to begin with, or, if he only wants texts, period, learned that despite him keeping voicemail enabled he said in his greeting something to the effect of "Since I am unable to talk now, please text me rather than leaving a message".

It could easily be funny with just a little more context.  But, as it stands, he obviously enabled voicemail messages in the first place and there's no indication he requested texts instead, and we don't know the point of her message to know if it was something that wouldn't have been worth the call time to begin with had he picked up and/or was left in such a way as to take up more time to listen to than it deserved.

So to act like the mere fact she utilized a communication method he'd enabled rather than hanging up and using a different method is a faux pas worth summoning a group to harp on makes him look worse than her.  The beginning of her message is annoying, so it would work a lot better to carry that through and make it a collection of information that is now unnecessary to verbally provide (thus keeping with the theme of the commercials).

Okay, I promise I'm done, but I have been such a big fan of the Dr. Rick series, as, whether I recognized the mocked behaviors in myself and/or my parents or couldn't relate at all, it was hella funny, but they've been running out of steam for a bit and things aren't landing for me like they used to.

After a few major family squabbles because of misunderstood texts, you realize that sometime you need to actually speak to people.

I like most of the Dr. Rick commercials, but not all. What's wrong with reading books about submarines?

I have a pay-as-you-go phone, and I only just stopped being charged for texts in the last year when I finally switched to a smart phone.  But even now, I hate long, convoluted texts.  Just call me.  And I swear, that's my last word on the subject.

We don't know that they are; it's possible, but not definite given what they say.  (When I was growing up, we didn't each wash our own clothes, we all threw our dirty clothes into a big hamper and then took turns doing the laundry; so if you peeked in on laundry day, you'd see one person doing it all, but that wouldn't mean that person always did everyone's laundry.)

Yeah, I was annoyed by the airport one where he chided Julie (poor Julie!) for packing a snack or lunch or whatever. I've never gotten myself together enough to do that. But I would never make fun of anyone. I'm the idiot paying $20 for an airport salad and $5 for a bag a chips that would be $2 at a convenience store. What room do I have to drag someone?

That said, I really liked the one where Dr. Rick took the crew to a game and the one where he helped the guy shop for the party. Now that it's football season again, maybe those will pop back into rotation.

That might have been the first one where I disagreed with Dr. Rick about something, when he chided the guy for telling the store manager a produce department employee was very helpful.  Telling the manager when an employee provides excellent service instead of only ever talking to one to complain about something is a good thing, not something to mock.

He didn't make anyone go fetch the manager for him, or waste the manager's time by babbling on about his experience.  He happened upon the manager as he was turning from one aisle to the next, paused to tell him, "Brian in produce, very helpful," and proceeded on his way.  It's a three-second encounter.

They may have signed up, but the most recent commercials definitely come across more as mocking than helping.  Maybe the writers have just run out of ideas where the initial concept actually works well.

It's patriarchal sexism.   Nobody thinks twice about a name that suggests dumping a woman in a storage facility like a piece of outdated furniture.   But a man?  To strip him of his autonomy?  (even if age has already done so).

Except we've talked about this before. In Commercial Land, men are pretty consistently portrayed as helpless toddlers, who can't clean the house or cook a meal or choose the right spaghetti sauce without direct supervision, so their autonomy has already been stripped from them. You don't need a place to dump them when they're already bordering on useless.
