The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

Oh, Anna. Have the next right response for the next fifteen minutes?

That's what got her into this mess.

Some people don't talk to EVERY sibling EVERY day, Jana.

The arboreal prayer closet is still a snoozefest. I can just hear the produces forcing Joy to learn her lines.

All on YOU, Jessa? By you, you mean Jana!

The show still looks dull as dishwater. They gotta tease a courtship, though. John David looked sad when it was brought up. His face also kinda looks like Josh.

The clip shows Jerrick on a pathway in Central America.  I wonder if it is the same well-worn path they take to the house with a dirt floor and outside cooking area.  It must be the set-up house for the missionary groups.  They probably charge tour prices for the experience.  Now if the Mormons or Catholics were coming, they'd likely put out some sweat equity and build them a better house.  But fortunately for them, they are on the SOS hit list so they will do nothing of the kind.  The occupants probably really have a house elsewhere with an actual stove and electricity.

I actually was impressed with Anna's tactic of having the next right response for the next 15 minutes. Well impressed to a degree... It's actually close to a DBT skill of staying in the moment and also akin to one day at a time. Where it's kind of messed up is in the response part. I'm assuming she means judging her feelings as right or wrong, and in their world any negative feeling is wrong.

So I take it back. I'm not all that impressed. Well maybe I'm impressed that she is thinking and trying to manage rather than pretending everything is fine.

Or ... maybe I just feel bad for Anna.

Eh, I think she really meant that she can pretend everything's fine for 15 minutes, before she remembers and breaks down.

The acting coach needs to be replaced.  The fake accent is ridiculous. What a crock of shit. Since when have Princess Jessa and her boy toy husband had 24 hour responsibility for their child ? Trying again to create interest in the vacationing missionaries by emphasizing the danger they are in is lame. Another repeat of Duggar style courting won't be interesting - been there, done that - numerous times.

Anna's forlorn looking down and to her right is the exact look she trotted out the last time we heard from her. Same clenched mouth, same words, etc. Anna was dealt a tough hand, but unless she is a liar she knew her JoshUa was a sly, incentuous idiot when she married him. She is the one who wanted baby after baby, obviously more so than her swine spouse. Thanks to many posts here, I have a better understanding of how hard it would be for her to leave. I don't feel sorry for her. She has been shown to be arrogant, ignorant and entitled.

Hey now, the Dillard's could easily trip in the parking lot at La Dispensa or burn the roofs of their mouths if the Pizza Hut delivery is too hot! An injury like that could set them back months!

Derick looks a bit better in that clip.

Their fake mission is so transparent.

Did anyone else think it was funny when Ben's voice over was that "they hit it off" and then they walk into that little room together? I thought it was a goof on them but maybe not.

I was gonna upload more pics, but tinypic.com is broken.

Jill's boobs are really hanging low.

ETA: Here we go

Derick's face looks like it might be moving closer to where it should be. Not quite lined up and centered, but it appears not to be pushed up into his nasal cavity anymore. I'm guessing he'll be in braces for a few years.

He looks cleaner and I think his hair has been trimmed. He looks engaged. before? I truly wondered if he was high on something. he looked pretty zonked out. And I don't say that lightly...he didn't look right. He is looking better now.

I guess we have a new clip for the upcoming season.

http://www.people.com/article/anna-duggar-addresses-josh-scandal-new-tlc-promo

So much fail in this promo. Where do I begin?

Bin trying to be Christian rapper is about as hilarious as KFed and Vanilla Ice. Anything to avoid having to work a real job... Am I right, Bin? At this point, I would have more respect for him if he got a job flipping burgers at McDonald's.

Anna- lay off the bronzers or spray tan. It makes you looks years older than you really are. Not a good look.

Jessa: STFU.

Jana and JD: Boring! I would rather watch paint dry. These two are duller than a bowl of soggy, cold oatmeal. Neither of them will be getting laid any time soon.

Jill and Derrick: No words to describe that train wreck. TLC really is trying to pretend that Grizzly Adams and Dr. Jill are doing hard core missionary work?

I really want to hate watch this shit, but Jesus laid it on my heart to ignore them and maybe they'll go away???

Any chance the Blind Item could be Josh and one of Anna's sisters? Maybe the holiday season mentioned was a year or more ago.

Or one of Bin's sisters and a Duggar son? The "son-in-law" might not be the actual perpetrator, but the link to the Duggar Family.

I can see Josh and one of Anna's sisters more so than Bin and Joy.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm thinking that Jessa hates her family and is so bitchy that she doesn't want anyone else taking care of her baby.

I know it is crazy, but for some reason, I think she is super possessive of baby Spurg.

Time will tell - as will the new pregnancy tests in the upcoming episodes.

ETA:  Rapper Flame- good luck getting Benjermin to speak more than 4 words per minute.

OMG, Ben's going to record a Christian rap album with Flame? This is what results when you throw money at people for no other reason than they are part of (or married into) a mega-family.

What bothers me most about this kind of thing getting tossed to Bin is that it can only prolong his delusions about what his adult life is really going to be like.

And the longer he's allowed to dwell in his stupid fantasies the farther behind he's going to be when reality actually hits and demands that he face up to life as an uneducated, non-resumed, unskilled, slow, stupid, unprepossessing father of heaven knows how many (and husband to a bitchy stay-at-home mother) who's never had a real job and has no idea how to get or to do one.

These new "stars" of Duggar tv are so boring that there's no way they'll sustain a teevee show for more than a few years, at most. And they're so delusional they almost certainly won't be spending the time they are on teevee saving money, learning to live on little, getting educations and preparing for the l-o-o-o--n-g future of possibly plentiful parenthood ahead. And they aren't going to get a lifetime of speaking engagements or a teevee pastorship for millennials out of it afterward, as I suspect little Binny figures, given the way things are going so far. They're variously too boring, too dumb, too colorless, too negative and too uncharismatic for that.

At some point, reality will come knocking, prepared to stay around for many decades, and it won't be pretty.

I just watched the preview during the Little Couple and I can't believe this shit fest is back as a regular series. Bin and Jessa are Boob and Michelle 2.0. Dorky, buffoon of a husband who's wife cringes on the inside every time he embarrasses himself.

My guess is Joy will be the next to court. Jana's expiration date has come and gone. She and Josie are going to be lifers at the TTH.

Oh, I hope not, but you're probably exactly right. They don't have anybody who can actually express a faintly complex thought accurately.

Of course, why would the school teacher of four and counting need such a skill?

Why does Jana and JD look like an older married couple??? JD looks older than he is

They've had all the life force just squeezed out of them over many years. That's what happens to people who aren't allowed to be themselves but are forced to squeeze their whole lives into a box of someone else's devising, I think. Poor things. And by now they probably figure they don't have anything different to look forward to either.

There's that adoring look at the lord and master again.  Is that a SOTDRT drill?  Must be.  Not common in my neck of the woods.

How about those stainless appliances in the new place.  Living rough.

At least she doesn't look so surprised like she does in most of her pics.

And yeah those appliances! I'll be lucky to have some that nice someday and I'm pretty sure they won't be funded by "fans."

So true! Their little 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom home is going to feel really small with all those kids when they're living off love offerings. Jessa and Ben need to look at a Duggar photo album at about the time Joy was born - back to the future.

So this completely rebooted and now hip and happening must-see "reality tv" consists of:

one young couple with two mostly stay-at-home parents complaining about the difficulties of caring for one baby in an Arkansas suburb

one young couple with two mostly stay-at-home parents struggling to care for one baby in a Central American-suburb

two producer-driven "big events," to wit, terminally uncool Dim Bin becoming a "Christian rapper" and the Duggar family building a "treehouse" for no discernible reason

however-many Duggar upper teens and 20-something sitting around as talking heads who discuss only whether and who and when one of them will be "courting" and coyly give few if any answers -- Are you courting? Am I courting? Who's courting? Who's the next to be courting? WTF is courting? -- yeah, that's reality all right

bronzer-poisoned Anna flitting through periodically as a sort of Greek chorus, moaning the actual theme material of the whole sad bunch of them -- "I don't know what's happened! I live my life 15 minutes at a time!"

Meanwhile, missing in action are the actual cores of existence for the whole damn gang -- JB, who "employs" most of them as lawnmowers, chauffeurs and some other vague jobs that apparently shall always remain indeterminate, and at whose house even "independent" married Jessa seems to spend an alarming amount of her time, and the mob of younger Duggars, whose care and feeding constitutes the employment of all the rest of the stars of the show.

Could it be any lamer?

Spot on. Been lurking here, decided to join in. The "new" show's focus is - as noted, fuzzy. The storyline for X Kids & Counting was the supposedly huugge brood of kidz at home and their godly special 'rents keeping everything humming. Which sort of happened for TV show purposes, but only after lots of retakes.

I found this blog post - written in 2009 when the show was "18 Kids and Counting" - about The Duggar Delusion. The bloggers are Christian women who write about abuse that occurs inside churches. Besides shining a light on just how faux this reality show always was, with links to video outtakes of Michelle not being able to handle just 2 of her squirmy offspring, there's this comment:

What will happen to the Duggar children when their fifteen minutes of fame, so to speak, come to an end?  To some extent, they have become "child stars" simply because they are members of an extremely large family.  Often, those put on a pedestal at an early age have trouble adjusting when they are no longer in the limelight.  It will be interesting to follow the Duggar kids and see what happens to them when their "charmed life" dissipates.

Their charmed life hasn't quite dissipated, and it's obvious that Jessa at least is all into being a TV star. Maybe the new show will limp along for a few seasons, if they find a hook for it. Much as Jessa may hate it, the only mildly interesting hook is the missionary story which is Jill/Derick. And the rest is - yes, LAME.

That was very interesting! Thank you! It's encouraging to see a strong Christian perspective that isn't totally tongue-bathing the Duggars. The video was interesting too--I've never seen it. What struck me the most was how J'boy was continuously pointing his toy gun at the camera man and pretending to shoot. Heartwarming. And either Michelle is too doped up to notice or, more likely, it's just more of Duggar-brand Christian behavior.

WHAT has happened to Jessa's face?  I think she's got a real Joan Rivers thing going on there. It's not just the lips--her eyes look different, too. She couldn't have had plastic surgery . . . right?

She does look completely different. I can't tell if it's makeup, photoshop, or something else. I wouldn't put it past Jessa to get plastic surgery though, especially if she can get it for free.

For some reason I want to scream NIKE!!! when I notice how close JD and Jana are sitting next to each other on the couch. I'm sorry, but JD reminds me of a creepy stalker type character from a bad made for Lifetime movie.

JD and Jana look resigned and sad to me. Like they know they missed their window to find love and nothing good lies ahead. It's not like they're normal 26 year olds with friends, hobbies, freedom and possibilities. What they've got going on now is it for them and that's pretty damn depressing.

Every time they're asked about courtship, I notice their eyes turn to slits. I just want Jana to bust out and scream "How the fuck am I supposed to meet someone when I spend all my time taking care of other people's children?!" I'm so tired of hearing their rehearsed, coy responses. Keep it real, ffs.

That is such a creepy photo (the Duggar one). I wouldn't be surprised if anyone's mind goes a little porn over it. For me it evokes Shakespeare's three witches in Macbeth (aka "The Weird Sisters," and ain't that apt) hovering ominously over an ecstatic woman. IMO, the message is that Jessa's obscenely thrilled to bits about being married and allowed to have teh sex and being a TV star, while her sisters are stuck in boring spinsterdom doing all the chores in the TTH. A creepy picture, an icky message.

What is sad is that I have a child around Jana's age.  She was asked in her senior year of high school "what are you going to do next?"  The world was her oyster.  Jana gets asked about one thing: "When are you going to be a courtin?"  There really can't be anything else for her (oh I know, the semi-mid-wife thing.  But, come on.  She is chief babysitter for MeShell.)

So let me get this straight.  They don't watch t.v. except for a few Andy Griffith shows, but yet we all are suppose to watch them on t.v. religiously and support that as their income.

They don't listen to contemporary Christian music but we all are suppose to support BinTheRapper by downloading his crap.

No double standard there folks!

Riiight, lol! Here's a link to a 2009 interview, which I'm sure is only one of many times when JB and Michelle blathered on and on about avoiding music with a "beat," and the perils of dancing. I guess there are two explanations for Bin's upcoming Christian rap thing on the show:

1. JB is now convicted that it's OK for Bin to do Christian rap, after the Lord laid it on his heart /TLC laid a big check on Duggar Enterprises for it.

2. Or, Bin's now the headship of his own family and can make those decisions.

The second one makes me giggle. I suppose JB has to pay lip service to Bin's headship status. I can't imagine that JB likes the idea that JB's not in charge of everything.

I still remember the one episode when they went to support some movie (Fireproof?) and after watching it JBlob said that he would take his family to the movies if more good Christian ones like that were made.  I remember shouting "No way!"  First of all it would be him, JShell, and at least 10 of the kids.  12 people x $12 per person (give or take - don't know their movie prices) = $144!  NO WAY is Mr. Buy Used and Save the Difference going to pay $144 so his family can be entertained for 2 houses.  Who buys this crap that comes outta his mouth?

But yet again we should all go see these movies and support them with our $$

What ever happend to Ben going to a seminary? Wasn't he "researching" that last fall? Can he not go to school and be available for filming? Is there an actual audience for "Christian rap"? Just when you think it's not possible for him to be a bigger tool, he comes up with something like this.

Good luck raising your umpteen children in a two bedroom house with the income from "Christian rap" and lawn mowing paying the bills.
