Episode Discussion: TFGH

There was something Bobbie said today about their mother dying and Luke telling her to pretend Pat never existed that made me suspect something pretty sinister and extremely dark for daytime. I wish I could articulate my theory . . . I think whatever happened definitely involves incest and Patricia actually being someone else.

Also, I'm not sure if it was just the way Tony & Carolyn played the scene in the interrogation room, but there was definitely a sexual-menace undertone to Fluke that hasn't been there before. And then when he was batting his eyelashes at Dante . . . very strange.

i have always thought that if Fluke was not actually Pat, then his alter is Pat, because TG does change his mannerisms to be slightly more effeminate when he is Fluke.  And I agree, something really bad is going to be the root cause of this.

I  had this hope that at the end of today's episode, when Count Dickolas was alone with Spenthwar, he was going to grab a pillow and just finish the job.  Really, is that so wrong?

Good Night Thweet Pwince,

And ffwights of angews thing thee to thy west.

But instead, like Dr. Phibes, he will rise again.

So THIS is the storyline Geary has waited all his life to play??  Well isn't that just special.  Besides those oh-so-dramaaaaaaaaaaaaatic pauses when he speaks, I also particularly love the Totie Fields bouffant hair-do he wears as Fluke.  Oh, it's scary, just not in the way he might wish.  I guess we were supposed to be struck by how he's the Evulest of the Evul Evuls, the way he was talking to Dante and Diane, but he looked and sounded more like the Smurf villian to me.

Spinelli is just the worst.  The sight of this mutant has given me the hives ever since he first appears.  And that voice...  At least I thought, no matter what other dreck the show dishes out, AT LEAST SPINELLI WAS GONE.  But like recurrent jock itch, here he is.  And just as welcome.  It's a pretty sad day when Maxie is the smartest one in the room.  And now that he's involved in the search for Pat, we'll be listening to that painfully precious passive aggressive horror for some time to come.

I've never said anything good about Sonny and I won't start now.  But even he couldn't stand this creature.

Honestly, Show today seemed like the film version of that children's book, Everybody Poops.

I'm sure Ron C. has it memorized.

I like that little girl who plays Emma.  During the scene where she runs in to tell Nikolas and her dad that the place is on fire, all I could think of was she was clearly the most talented actor in the room.  She really is a pretty good actress, in my opinion.

[…]

Regarding Spencer - I don't want to see the kid leave the show.  It's not his fault the writing is shit.

I agree. I think during the previous day's party scenes, both Emma and Joss were far more tolerable than either Spencer or Cameron (although that's not saying much), but they're all little kids. They're still learning to act.

The real problem, to me, is that the writing (and direction) for them is all wrong. It would even be fine to have a little kid crush-triangle between them. The egregious error is their dialogue. It is not just that it is so stilted (although heaven knows it is) but that it isn't anything these (approximately) 10 year old actors should have to utter. How could they possibly connect with that shit? Kimberly Mc. and Jonathan Jackson weren't giving pitch perfect performances at this age, either, but the writing for them was much more age-appropiate, so the child actors weren't being tossed out to sea. And I'm not someone who thinks (sexy boxing-girl escorts for Spencer aside) that this kid story is creepy. I just think it is bad, so so bad, and completely unbelievable.

Today's scenes with Nik and Emma were touching. I think it was stupid that the director had Emma wipe away a tear that wasn't there, but for the rest of it, Emma was fine. She was scared and worried about a hurt friend. A kid that age can understand and connect with that sort of emotion, way more than this, "This is the love of my life," or "You never tell me you love me, even when we're alone," nonsense.

Kids aside, I loved Tyler Christopher's scenes with Nancy Lee Grahn, today. I thought he knocked it out of the park, but also, my word, he looks better than he has looked in what -- five or ten years. His face is no longer puffy (can't say that for NLG, please lay off the injectibles, Nancy, you looked better before whatever treatment you just had).

Ugh to Julian's cheesy line "So I just did things for the past hour that would make Caligula blush". Mind bleach, anyone?

And now, to completely date myself, that's a line from a Smith's song. I'm fairly certain Ron stole it, on purpose. It's at about 1:43 in the following video.

In other news, I like Spinelli, liked how he was with Maxie today, and am glad he's back (even though he is a big moocher). He put a little "Spine" in Spinelli.

I remember your willingness to leave him parentless so you could fuck a tumor until your brain exploded.

To which story does this refer? I was on the barge for 5 or 10 years.

This brings to mind a quote from the Bette Davis film, All About Eve:

Lloyd Richards: I shall never understand the weird process by which a body with a voice suddenly fancies itself as a mind. Just when exactly does an actress decide they're HER words she's speaking and HER thoughts she's expressing?

Spencer living was so disappointing.

I was so fearful that Cop!Killa was going to put on her hand on Nik's at the end of the show. I'm still expecting her to show up, and now I'm scared that it won't be as a ghost/spirit/apparition.

Was this after Emily died?

I came back for the 50th and I binged watched a lot of YouTube, but I didn't see all of the years I missed. I do remember some Liz/Nik scenes where she basically called Nik out on not connecting with his kid, and then he tried to be an actual parent.

Yeah, it was after Emily died. Nik didn't want surgery because it would get rid of the hallucinations. He sure didn't care about leaving Spencer an orphan then, and Spencer wasn't the stupid little shit he is now. That's when he spent all his time with Lesley in Italy.

Nik had a tumor that made him hallucinate Emily. They had sex. It was gross. And hilarious.

That storyline was particularly tough for the Wyndemere staff.  Cleaning up all the aftermath from his hullucinatory "afterglow".

Count Dickolas has always been a prince among peens.

TC has always been a champion cryer.  Right up there with KMo and JT.  Remember when people used to call him the snot prince?  Because his nose runs uncontrollably when he cries, and he used to cry all the time.

Possibly UO, but I think TC is one of the better actors on the show.  He's just unfortunately somewhat limited as a romantic lead and has had perpetually terrible material to deal with.  I actually liked him with Britt because they were both weirdos, so the lack of traditional "romantic chemistry" worked.  TC is pretty terrible at stereotypical soap romance, and his fairly tale romance stories always fall flat, but he makes a good family member, friend, and business person.  I think the character is under- (and poorly) utilized.

I'd love to see the show experiment with some RoNik once Robin comes back and kicks Patrick in the balls for the way he's acted for the last year.

It's infuriating that Spinelli doesn't have any money.  Spinelli can't possibly spend that much money, what with not having to hire lawyers all the time, not giving Liz a house and trust fund, not owning a penthouse, not buying a lot of leather jackets and black t-shirts, and not spending any money on haircuts or hair dye and grease.  He really shouldn't need to mooch off of anyone.  I was so annoyed at him saying "what if all the hotels are full?"  Shut up, Spinelli - the Metro Court always have lots of extra rooms, as evidenced by how quickly Carly and Olivia hand out keys to serial killers, mobsters, and teenagers wanting to have sex.  It also makes no sense that Tracy would hire him over Sam or really anyone else - Tracy always hated him and his stupid nicknames and overall exhausting personality.

I hate this Pat shit because it can only mean that we're going to exposed to significantly more days of godawful crazy Luke.  I've been over it for months, and I'm pissed that we're apparently entering chapter 3 of it.

Duke, why don't you and the high horse you rode in on, take a long walk off a short pier. He really expects Anna, now a federal agent, to look the other way while he does whatever to Julian.  I want Anna to put his butt in jail again.

When Duke told Anna that Julian runs a criminal organization, I wanted her to look at him and say 'so do you.'

That whole conversation with Anna was insane.  I know all of these people are hypocrites, but that was just dumb - "He's doing exactly what I'm doing, and so you must put him in jail."  It just makes no sense.  By the way, "it just makes no sense" is my vote for the t-shirts.  Maybe put "as usual" on the back.

I loved Maxie shutting the fun down on Spinelli and calling him out on his douchey behavior. And I assume the second bedroom in Maxie's apartment is for Georgie so she has her own room.

Ah, thank you - didn't even think of that!

So true, General Days - re: TC's acting, and the kiddies.  I don't have a problem with the *concept* of the Spencer character, but Ron/the writers have completely changed him; turning him in a terrible direction when Grandma Lesley brought him back to Port Charles once Nikolas recovered from that gunshot wound. The previous Spencer was mostly quiet and very well-mannered, on the serious side. Spencer would be believable as a mildly bratty kid perpetually jealous that cousins Cam and Aiden have a mommy and live with her, whereas his mommy and almost-step mom Emily died, then his father kicked Britt out of their lives. I would sympathize with a lonely boy who wants to be part of a family.  Storylines about family dynamics are believable - two little boys fighting over a girl for months and months and spouting lines that make them seem like emo teenagers, not so much.

Aside from being great actors, JJ and KMc were believable because they were involved in solid family stories. Young Lucky gets shot because he follows the dad he idolizes into a dangerous situation ... or is anxious/scared due to the circumstances of the birth of his baby sister. He became friends with Emily, and they both had beloved pets. Never in a million years would I buy 11-year-old Lucky announcing to his parents that Emily was the love of his life. GMAB!! Robin had clashes with her mother, but when she was pushy it was like "I want to see Felicia's new baby." She had abandonment issues - realistic because of how her parents lived. She certainly wasn't talking about choosing boyfriends to love at 9 years old.

I also agree about TC being a great actor, which is why I was pissed about the writers massacring his chemistry with Britt because it's been a while since he had a decent romantic partner with chemistry.

Spinelli and ditzy Maxie deserve eachother- both mooches with no jobs.

Ric deserves another partner as well since he's saddled with smug nurse who can't stop staring at eachother.

Lucas is a resident of what exactly? He needs his license first to head the AJ clinic. I understand unrealistic medicine but I wish they hired a medical consultant to make some things plausible. Patrick takes care of burns as good as he draws blood for children (when Danny was sick). Silas does ER medicine as well as oncology.

I agree that JJ and KMc were great in their stories, but I think they were also written as pretty unbelievable as children the age they were supposed to be.  I think their characters were likable, which made it easier to overlook some of the clunky language and the dialogue that was not realistic to kids their age.  Robin was just about the most precocious 5-8 old that ever lived, having these long conversations with her mom and Robert and Sean about adult topics, in quasi-adult language.  Lucky traveled halfway across the country on his own when he was, I think, about 11 years old, and he was always ridiculously savvy.  Writing unrealistic dialogue for kids or having them do things that don't really fit with their age isn't a new thing for this show, in my opinion.  But Spencer is written to be such a little d-bag (although I do like him) that the crappy writing stands out that much more.  To me, it continues to be the same kind of unrealistic writing for children, but it's just a lot less palatable to people when the child in question is a jerk.  JJ and KMc also were usually in scenes with other characters that were really popular and well-acted, which helped.  Spencer gets Nik (I like him, but he goes back and forth), Sonny (don't even get me started), Helena (fun to watch, but not really loved), and the other kids.

I guess my point is that I get that people think all the love stuff is not at all realistic to 10 year olds, and it may not be.  But I think Robin and Lucky said and did a lot of things that were not realistic for kids their ages either, they just were about different things.

I don't disagree on the realism angle (although I'd have to go back and watch old Lucky and/or Robin clips to weigh in any more). My point was more that the stories written for them were probably more relatable to the children playing the roles. So yeah, Lucky made it from Canada to Port Charles, but a 10 year old boy could probably engage with that story on an emotional level (the idea of such an adventure is exciting), where I can't imagine how the boys playing Cam and Spencer can relate to this, "You're the love of my life," and "You don't even say you love me when we're alone," garbage.

You're right about the likability aspect of it, too, though. Lucky (particularly, probably more so than Robin at times) was a likable kid. Spencer has been turned into a brat. Am I hallucinating, or didn't Spencer consider Liz's boys to be his friends/cousins, before all this "townie" crap started?

I think that it may have a lot to do with the talent of the actors. I still remember JJ's Lucky's first scene at Ruby's, he shone, he had a light that Spenser and Cam do not have. Same for Robin, and she was as young as Emma and Joss, there really was something there.

But she didn't call him yet. She wanted to call Sam, then Tracy said no. Bobbie suggested Felicia, and Tracy again said no. Just before he knocked, someone said 'if not Sam or Felicia, then who?'

Go Tracy!!!!oved the way she said "Hell no" to both Sam and Flea as "detectives". Sam can't figure out who Jason is no matter how many clues she's given. Nancy Drew she's not!! And Felicia? Brains of a gnat.

But will Spinelli save the day, like Sonny did with the bomb? Will  real detectives Nathan and Dante be forced by circumstances to praise Spin's razor-sharp reasoning and bright brain in detecting the Pat story? {extreme sarcasm].

I'm so glad the Tracy showed her old spunk. But hiring that clown Spinelli to detect will be almost as bad as hiring Franco as an "art therapist".

Also, I'm not sure if it was just the way Tony & Carolyn played the scene in the interrogation room, but there was definitely a sexual-menace undertone to Fluke that hasn't been there before. And then when he was batting his eyelashes at Dante . . . very strange.

Tony Geary's behavior (we won't dignify it as "acting") is like spaghetti thrown against a wall: Some of it sticks and most doesn't, and there's no art or method to it. Hence Fluke/Luke can menace a woman as tough as Diane, his lawyer, while simultaneously flirting seductively with a younger man (Dante). Fluke/Luke is basically begging for attention, any kind of attention, negative or positive. That's why he will insult his own grandchild and son-in-law and perplex his sister, wife, and daughter.

The character is like a little kid who needs a nap....badly. A "time-out" in the corner of a prison cell leaves him alone without attention, so he screams, creates noise, and desperately tries to generate attention to feel alive rather than hollow and dead.

Sam doesn't really need to earn money - Jason made a lot of money over the years, and spent very little, according to the story.  Sam inherited a lot of money when he "died."  Hmmm...it could be really interesting to see a story where they try to figure that out.  Jason, even if he doesn't remember loving Sam, would probably not want to take the money back especially because of Danny, but he's also really really broke and so he need some money.  Sure, financial spreadsheets don't make for good tv, but seeing Sam and Jason have discussions with each other and other people while they figure it out could be interesting to watch.  So of course we won't see it.

Very good point about Lucky's story being more relatable to the child actor playing him.  Not so much true for Robin's story, I would argue, because of all the spies and international intrigue and mom's fake face scar, but she could have just been that good of a young actress.  NB probably can't relate at all to the character he's playing, because the kid doesn't seem like a complete douchebag and does seem to have decent adults looking out for him.  His character, on the other hand...  (Because I feel obligated to say it in any post about Spencer, I mostly like him.)

While the stories young Robin was in were pretty out there, they gave her a relate able kid part to play, in that her role was usually being protected by the adults, being scared when something bad happened, and worrying about mom and dad getting along.

Robin and Lucky were both wise beyond their years, but for the most part their role was to be the kid everyone worried about while the adults were doing dangerous things.

In fairness to the current kids, I will admit the material on the show over all is well below what it was when Lucky and Robin were young. (For that matter and sorry for the heavy snark here from what I see on other boards and other places the quality of the viewers is way below as well...must say something about society) but that being said, the real problem is the type of material being given. Robin, Lucky, Emily, even young Maxie or Lucas were never asked to play a grand romance before a somewhat appropriate age to do so.  Lucky never meet Liz to late in his high school years, and IIRC was a senior before her rape story line. Robin was a junior when she meet Stone, Emily had a school girl crush on the couple of years older Nick. The Maxie, Georgie, Sage, Lucas stuff was all in High School

Ron is forcing these little kids to play the story he could be ....should be writing for TJ and Molly.  Ron's making these kids play a romance beyond their years is creepy and remains IMHO abusive on a couple of levels. It reeks of Toddlers and Tiaras and makes my skin crawl

Me: "Do your homework someplace else!"

I still don't get how the following few things haven't happened - a.) Jason's ring hasn't bounced out of Nik's pocket b.) No one has mentioned Robin. Patrick finds his daughter in danger again and doesn't think anything. It's "Oh there there you were brave. Now go chill with grandma." No hmm let's contact Robin... oh we can't contact her? c.) Sam is in the hospital. Why hasn't anyone called her or um walked up there?

Also, way to not wear gloves while holding the kid's hand after hearing about the infection risk. And shut up Nik about how Spencer is all you have. You would have married Liz not caring about his feelings and you had Helena and Fluke in there with that kid. Plus, tumor. Tumor.

While the writing was certainly better when Robin, Lucky, Emily, etc were kids, at th end of the day for me the ultimate difference between the kids then and the kids now is that those actors were extremely talented and of the current group the Emma & Joss actresses do have potential but the Cameron & Spencer actors are terrible.

Now in all fairness I've never seen the Cameron actor on anything else. But the Spencer actor was as bad as he is here on both Red Band Society and Grey's Anatomy. His inability to stop fidgeting while Spencer was sedated was ridiculous. He can't even "act" unconsciousness.

When we were in the "Oh God Will This Plotline Ever End?!?" stage with wondering who Fluke was, this was brought up as a plot hole in the DID speculation, but I don't think anyone was brave enough to go back to find a scene where Fluke and Luke were in two different places simultaneously.

Okay, I'm shallow. If they want to write bottle shows to save money, have Alexis in a manshirt and Julian shirtless talking to each other. And no closeups.

I'm one who likes BA/Spinelli, but this "Ellie said I have feelings for Maxie, hem, haw, OMG I do have feelings for Maxie!" is just character regression. Bring back Judgy Wudgy for pointless Naxie angst.

I was so annoyed at him saying "what if all the hotels are full?"

OMG, that was so obnoxious. I wish Maxie had punched him in the face after he said that. At least she closed the door on him while he was still yammering. I'm sure we're supposed to find Spin hilarious right now, but it's this kind of writing that makes him so awful.

But I think Robin and Lucky said and did a lot of things that were not realistic for kids their ages either, they just were about different things.

They're soap kids, so you have to suspend disbelief. Of course it's unrealistic that Lucky traveled across the country as a kid, but the internal logic of it was sound. He'd been on the run his entire life. It wasn't a huge leap to think he'd picked up some skills along the way. And Robin was always surrounded by adults, so for her to be in those conversations worked, even if the language didn't always make sense for her. For me the difference between the kids then and now is that Lucky and Robin and the others were accorded a respect that Spencer et al. don't get. The kids now are just joke machines, as jsbt has often mentioned.

Short answer: many of us suspect that the folks in charge of this show never had any idea where this story was going, and so a lot of what's happened doesn't make any sense now that we have at least a partial reveal.

We also suspect that if they did know where they wanted the story to go, they changed it midstream. Either way, it makes no sense.

My guess, if we go the DID route, is that we were seeing Luke "trapped" in his own mind, while Fluke was in control. I have zero idea if there is any existing scene that would discredit that idea (would not surprise me if there are many, it's Ron), because I have no patience to actually pay attention to the details in this shit any more. None of it matters though.

His inability to stop fidgeting while Spencer was sedated was ridiculous. He can't even "act" unconsciousness.

Well he would be in severe pain if burned and dehydrated. Even in shock and unconscious (and possibly medicated somewhat), if burned that much a kid is hurting and could fidget, especially with tubes and needles being stuck in him suddenly.

I started watching GH a couple weeks ago, and I've been getting caught up on the more recent major storylines via Youtube.  There's something I haven't found an answer for yet though: if Fluke is just another personality within Luke, how was he interacting with people while Luke was locked up in a psych ward?

1. We're all supposed to forget about any inconsistencies in storylines, because Ron knows best, or

2. Ron decides to take the story in another direction, on whatever whim he has at the moment, or

3. Both.

Someone tried to confirm yesterday that Spinelli couldn't afford the MetroCourt. Ron said that was correct, with no elaboration.

I'm sure he could afford a room at the fleabag motel Jordan is staying at. Or the place McBain was at when he was in town. The MetroCourt isn't the only place in town.

Favorite line of the day, Silas to Michael and Morgan: "You're grown men, supposedly."  Morgan sucks. Ava's hair and complexion look fabulous for a woman who was shot and fell into freezing water. Did Robin revive her too??!!

I think it was unintentionally funny that when Carly was describing Ric to Ric, she was actually describing herself. Ric looks good but giving Sonny a tongue bath like that kind of kills his attractiveness.

I like that Nik treated Dr.O like he hasn't forgotten the horrible, disturbed monster she is.

Joss, ask your daddy to move in with him permanently in Australia. Mommy has chosen a replacement daughter who is "loved to pieces."

Was anyone else hoping (for a moment) for a murder-suicide when Not!ToddFranco grabbed Nina's wrist?

Spencer was only unconscious for ONE episode?? UGH. But, TC is doing excellent work. That last scene with Nik choking on guilt and Spencer just being a vulnerable 10-year-old boy was touching.

So much love for the preview of Michael saying on the stand that Sonny is a danger to his children.

Side note: Genie looks fabulous in that Nutri whatever commercial.

And the letter of the day is "E", for "Enough already".

So Ron thinks that if he references one of the greatest medical institutions in the world that will somehow cover for the shit load of nonsense he has going right now. Yeah, sure, okay. He is such a shameless ass.

Kiki 2.0 is...very blond. That's about all I got. Well that and she seems easier for Silas to hug.

What a shock, Ava is not only alive but being cared for by Silas...let me pick my jaw up from the floor once I recover from this wholly unexpected plot twist...

Ron either gives himself way too much credit or us not enough for what he keeps putting forth as "amazing and totally surprising drama". We can all see this crap train coming from miles away, what's surprising about any of this?

At least that beautiful baby Avery made an appearance.

The Nina and Franco...Ron really went there with the Y&R gag, not that it surprises me or anything at all he can do to make an even bigger joke of this show.

I guess Billy better prepare himself for the same soon enough, especially whenever they finally allow Jake to run into the Nina.

Is it just me or does nuKikki look a lot like nuKristina? Not Lexi. Odd that I got that vibe.

TC is doing a *fabulous* job. Kudos to him.

And, W.T.F. was that convo with Robert Frank and Nina? Why on God's green earth would he call her Phyllis? Unless he was trolling Y&R.
