Spy (2015)

I thought this was a lot of fun. Statham was great but I missed so many of his one-liners. They were shooting out of his mouth too fast (talking about his crazy life in the field) it felt super edited like he couldn't keep a straight face.

And, I tried looking on imdb but couldn't find the actors' name- but Rayna's blond guard who she berates (Cagney / Lacey and his swedish meatballs) - I am bummed that he wouldn't be around for another round. Just loved her interaction with him, being the bully.

It does feel like they set this up for a sequel, but then, The Heat kinda felt a bit like that too.

Anton was played by Swedish actor Björn Gustafsson.

MVPs were Statham and Rose Byrne. I did enjoy Susan once she put on the badass bodyguard demeanor and just started ripping Rayna a new one.

I wonder how much of the badass commentary was ad libbed.

I was pleased to note that the only nudity in the film were the dick pics. That's a nice bit of gender-expectation tableflipping, if you ask me. And now I'm wondering if those pics belonged to anybody we know. Was there a screen credit for Wang Double?

I don't know how Hart (and the lady who played Sharon) could do scenes with mice perched on her. OMG hazard pay.

Saw it last night and it definitely made me laugh so hard I was crying at times. When Susan pushed the guy and he fell on the rebar, then threw up on him, THEN threw the knife, I lost it. If a dog had wandered in and peed on him, I probably would have had to be carried out of the theater.

Jason Statham was great and I also enjoyed Miranda Hart (Nancy) and her friendship with Susan.

Didn't know there would be an end-credits scene, so that was fun as were the credits. Great, fun, movie for a date night.

I saw this last night, I didn't laugh as much as you guys, but it was a pleasant two hours. Melissa McCarthy is one funny lady, I thought she looked gorgeous too, lovely makeup. I'm glad that this movie and Neighbors have changed my mind about Rose Byrne, she is pretty great. If there is a sequel I do hope she comes back and is one of the good guys. Anyone put off that Jude Law used an American accent, when there were so many other Brits? His accent is one of my favorite things about him!

I'm in for a sequel. Hopefully they can get all the players back Because they really worked together seamlessly. Part of the fun for me was trying to figure out which of the men Susan was going to bed ala Bond at the end. The lucky winner and the final end credits scene was just great.

For a sequel Pierce Brosnan as Bradley's father (and legendary soy that he's always tried to emulate) and Catherine Zeta Jones in some capacity (Ford's ex/mentor) could be hilarious.

I was a little hesitant on this but took a chance and I'm very glad I did.

I really liked that, for a change, Susan wasn't some slovenly lump. She was smart, professional, well-dressed and articulate. I thought she looked lovely in the beginning and in almost all of her outfits (except the intentionally tacky undercover garb). I thought she looked fantastic in the casino dress.

I'm just so tired of overweight characters being made to dress so awfully (which I've found has been the case for some of MM's recent stuff). Not being a size 0 doesn't mean that you have no fashion sense or are a slob. So, I was really happy to see her be nice, kickass, smart and beautiful.

I was not expecting Statham to utterly send up his usual badassery; that was a very pleasant surprise. I would kill to see the gag reel because his outlandish stories were insane. I missed a lot of lines because our audience was killing themselves.

I also really like Susan changing from her 'jiminy christmas' demeanor to just letting fucking rip on Rose Byrne's character. Oh my God, the insults were hilarious.

Lots of laughs and it seemed like the cast had a great time.

This was awesome! MM was in her element here. She and Paul Feig really make a great team. And Rose Byrne is definitely rising up in the ranks of funny as heck women out there.

It does feel like they set this up for a sequel, but then, The Heat kinda felt a bit like that too.

There was definitely going to be a sequel, and a script was already written, but Sandra didn't want to do it. She wanted to leave the first movie as is. Spy would definitely have sequels though. The're targeting this to be a funny female James Bond franchise.

I loved it! So happy they made Susan an actual badass and didn't just resort to the usual inept fat girl movie trope. Also relieved they didn't make Jude Law the bad guy (though I totally knew he faked his death at the beginning).

And Jason Statham! Get this guy in more comedies NOW! He and Melissa were so funny fighting together. I had a feeling they'd hook up at some point. What can I say? When you see enough movies, you know when certain things are going to happen...

I didn't like Identity Thief or (Gasp!!) Bridesmaids, so MM wasn't enough of a sell for me, I had a few hours to kill and this is what was playing so I saw it and dear lord it cracked me up.   Standouts for me were MM, JS and RB.

I don't know whom I liked Susan paired with more.   Her scenes with both Byrne and Statham cracked me up.   And I so knew Susan and Ford were going to hook up.   When she had that oh god look on her face and he continued to sleep putting his arm over her and saying "You know you loved it."  I howled.

And Rose Byrnes Reyna.  LMAO.  Her story about why Susan reminded her of a Clown, to the inexplicable comraderie they kind of developed, the whole thing was awesome.  When Susan yelled for Reyna to toss her the gun and Reyna pushed it just a smidge, I lost it.

Wonderful Movie.

Loved it, as I knew I would. I adore MM but Jason Statham and Rose Byrne were the real MVPs for me as well. I am at the point where I will watch anything Rose Byrne does, I just love her. I think it's time for her to get a starring role! Also loved seeing her boyfriend Bobby Cannavale pop up, he's such a great actor. Miranda Hart is always a delight too. Basically, there was not a weak link in the cast. It was just a fun and hilarious movie and I hope there is a sequel.

I also hated those two movies. I didn't hate the trailer for Spy but I was very wary. Then my husband amazed me by saying that it had over 90% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and I STILL wasn't sure because that's the shit that convinced me to watch the travesty known to me as Bridesmaids.

I was very happily surprised.

I agree that it's hard to choose which pairing I preferred because when Susan took the verbal gloves off, that shit was fucking priceless.

I thought it was sweet when JS kind of fucks up during the final confrontation and Susan's all "*sigh* He means well."  Awww. :)

They were great together! I wanted them to just tell those guys at the end to fuck off and they would run away together instead. But that may be for a different movie. Heh.

I loved how in the end, as they were saying their goodbyes, Reyna started with "Fuck you", and MM said "Fuck you too" with some fondness, and Reyna sort of smiled at MM, like "yeah, we may be on different sides, but we understand each other."

It was great to see Susan's progression from being a tentative agent on the field to being a badass. Of course there would be jitters her first time out, her throwing up and fainting twice, but once she got those out of the way, and realized, hey, I can do this, she was just as badass as Jude Law and Jason Statham on the field. MM was treated like a real leading lady like how Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, etc. would have been treated had they gotten this role instead. She was dressed nicely, nice make-up, a badass action sequence in the kitchen and the requisite interrogation scene for the lead.

I missed a lot of this movie due to laughing so hard which is not something I can say about a lot of comedies so in that regard it was definitely a success.

It was funny and enjoyable. A wee bit graphic in some places but nothing I couldn't handle. Just a good time.

My sister and I had just watched Melissa McCarthy on Graham Norton this weekend and she does a bit where she's talking about auditioning for 'Bridesmaids' and forgetting that there are people judging her because she's known Kristin Wiig for so long that they just started ad-libbing together. So afterwards, she's berating herself with 'You got weird... why do you always have to get weird?'

So, at the post credits scene when she make the remark about the thumb and they both start laughing. My sister and I followed it up with: You got weird. Why do you always have to get weird?! You got really specific....

Hey, it was funny to us.

I would totally get this on blu-ray for extras because the gag reel has got to be amazing.

Hell, it felt weird just seeing/hearing Jason Statham laugh in the end credits bit. He's usually so grim and action-y. He has a lovely smile and a great laugh.

I hope the gag reel exists, that it's long, and it features the cast generally unable to get through most of their more outrageous lines/insults without cracking the hell up.

I am glad I went to see this. It actually made me laugh out-loud a few times and that is rare. I have to give kudos to the guy who played Aldo, he cracked me up. And I bought him as a suave MI6 agent at the end.

I think for a spy movie I enjoyed how kind it was. All the people, even Rose Byrne, were kind of good guys or able to redeemed. I enjoyed that when Jude Law saw that Susan didn't really need him anymore and was kind of her own agent he seemed happy for her.  I enjoyed that Jude was not actually a bad guy, as I thought they would make him when it seemed he was a double agent. You can not be interested in the main character and still be a good guy. I liked how the movie really made the point that the home office people are pretty good too.  And I most loved the way that Susan's weight was an asset (as it obviously would be) in fighting.  I hate to watch these little size zero women knocking out men that tower over them. The only thing I would say though is that Susan's weight might be a problem if she stayed in the field as she sort of sticks out and word would get around.

Glad I went to see it.

There was a fair amount of crude humor in this and I don't usually like movies that rely on crude humor, but it worked here.  I don't need comedies to make me laugh out loud--just being amusing is enough for me--but, if they can make me laugh out loud, then that's a bonus.  After it was over, my son said "I haven't heard you laugh at  a movie like that in a long time--it was nice."

And, ditto on the JS love!

I watched this yesterday and can't remember the last time I watched a move and LOLd so much (when I was supposed to).

What great casting!  Everyone worked all around, I agree that MM, JS and RB were standouts, though Miranda Hart's Susan was just as good and so was Peter Serafinowicz as Aldo (I had to look that up, he was a real "hey it's that guy" for me).   His OOT lechery was hilarious rather than annoying (though the scene where he's untying her went on a bit too long); when he would give Susan the double cheek kiss and then lean in with open mouth and tongue, I couldn't stop laughing.  Really, everyone was so good.  Loved the emphasis on the friendship between Susan and Nancy and I also enjoyed Allison Janney's tough "I don't joke" boss.

Some bits I remember that weren't already mentioned:

"I have a mouse on my tits".  I rewound this a couple of times, the deadpan delivery cracked me up.

Jason S insisting there was a "face-off" room and the other guys laughing behind their notebooks.

Susan "I look like someone's homophobic aunt!"

The sequence in the hotel where Susan and Jason are sniping that the other one's going to ruin the mission and Jason ends with "You times infinity!"

Alison Janney saying she almost uploaded Susan's video to YouTube - that whole scene was great, they way she says "women" under her breath, you know she means that Susan "went along to get along" rather than pushing for agent in the field status (proved by Susan's mom telling her to give up on her dreams).

What a fun movie.  I'd definitely go to a theater for a sequel as long as they bring back Melissa M, Jason S, Allison J and Miranda H.

Just saw this again on cable and was surprised by the high production value. This is actually kind of a regular Spy movie with a few jokes thrown in.  The action scenes were really good. I would say all of them were top notch.  Also, the music was darn good. I think in the theater I took a bathroom break during the credits but the credit song was really good. Not only the music but the credit sequence.  I really don't see how anyone can give this one a bad review.

I finally watched this over the weekend.  Like others, I'm a bit on/off with MM's movies, so it was a coin flip whether I'd like this one or not and I was definitely pleasantly surprised by how funny it was without being gross (Bridesmaids) and I really liked how the show depicted a person of size being competent, kicking ass, and looking pretty darn good when she could.  I have to laugh at the trope covers they gave her, playing on her age/weight, and it continued during the end credits, but then how they had Susan Cooper showing that she really could do the job and the covers really were just that, covers, because as such, she really would blend in and be underestimated.

I would definitely love to see a sequel.  I've always liked James Bond movies, so I love the spoof.  All of the actors were really great in it.
