Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

I think J Rod is delusional and perceives (I'm being kind) all sorts of things that are not actual events.  In her mind, these things really happen...in reality?  nothing even close.

She probably saw a woman in the IHOP bathroom and then guessed the person was  trans and then felt like she was going to be attacked and had a freak out.  In reality, it was a boring woman using the bathroom.  Jill believes this really, truly happened.

A Trump doormat?  Probably an orange doormat and Jill made some connection in her head  Orange doormat= Trump.

We all know people like this...they are always having some type of problem, drama, argument, incident while the rest of us are like "huh?".

Jill enjoys the victim mentality. Always in conflict. Always in drama.  Always the target of someone.

I avoid people like that. It's exhausting trying to fake concern for shit we know is a total craziness.  Plus, they scare me.

I just saw the last BUB and it seems Jedson and Judson lit a fire in the family's huge communal closet/linen room,/laundry room. The fire department came and the next day, a fire restoration company came and hauled away 70 Hefty bags of clothing for cleaning! Now the family is living in a hotel. The show was fascinating for me because it was not scripted, just obviously reenacted.

They were lucky no one was hurt. From what I understand, the parents were gone so the older siblings were in charge. I like the Bates better than the Duggars, but these Gothard families' tendencies to let the older ones mind the younger ones for long periods of time sucks.

When and why did the Bates go Gothard?

Probably when they started homeschooling and found out about the Gothard ATI homeschool courses.  That's my guess.

JRod is insane. That is all.

No wait, I'm not done lol. She's insane and scary. She would rather believe some false, far fetched, ridiculous, poorly patched together conspiracy theory than the truth.

I was at a Target today. They had Bibles for sale. I was also at not one but TWO Starbucks, and they both just had plain gray commercial doormats.

Guess what else. The second Starbucks I went to was to go to a Bible study. Of course it was mixed gender, mixed marital status and I don't think any of us use KJV, and I wore yoga pants, my headship was of playing basketball, and we didn't force any heathens to join us, so it doesn't count as legit JRod Bible study, but anyway.....

Jill is a nut.

The Bates - didn't they have some sort of crisis over using birth control that prevents implantation or was that also the Duggars?

I personally think they were always conservative Christians, but Gil has short man syndrome and needs a church that gives him a lot of authority and makes him feel big. He's actually pretty hot in those old pics.

The Duggars were the ones who were told by good ole Dr. Wheat (also of Marriage Book fame) that BC pills were a form of abortion.

Kelly was just super fertile from day one, popping out kids every 13-15 months for several cycles.

I've told this story here before but it makes me laugh so here it is again. Back in the TWoP days posters called Gil "Hot Daddy" so I had to google him for a pix because curiosity got the better of me. Clicked on it and got a virus. Those Gothard's are unsafe in more ways than one.

The Bates may have gotten sucked into the Gothard cult through homeschooling. When I was looking into homeschooling, 20 years ago, ATI was considered the most "Christian" curriculum out there. You could only use it if you passed their criteria - no TV, faithful church attendance at the right type of church, promise to strictly discipline your kids. There was a sense that the parents approved were elite, so I could see where that would make some people want to be even more elite and special by diving into the whole Gothard lifestyle.

I remember these big ugly collared, Capri length, with cuffs, onesies being big in the early 90s. One of my elementary school friend's sisters was in the popular preppy group in high school, and a bunch of the girls had senior pics made in these. With white panty hose and white heels. Horrific then and now. These were homecoming queens and cheerleaders, etc. at a public school. Not somewhere lost in Fundieland. Hideous.

At least Kelli was probably hiding baby belly and chasing kids at a beach.

Ok.  I read J-Rod's blog.

Someone sent them porn?

:'-D

What I wish these people would realize is that there is nothing dirty or wrong about sex.  God created it.  But mankind made it about power and used it to control people (when, where, and with whom).  And women who embraced it were labeled "harlots" and stoned (verbally or literally).

I seriously get the willies when I see her crazy eyes.  She gives the BEST crazy eyes.

This fire incident at the Bates house makes me wonder if the two boys got spanked really hard based on the Gothard discipline mandate. I know they took them to some of the houses that were affected by the fires in their area which is a good way to teach young kids about the dangers of fire but I don't think that was the only discipline they received.

I have to admit the first thing I thought when I heard about the fire was a book I read once where the characters were saying they were going to start a fire in the laundry room as a distraction to escape. (And now it's bugging me that I can't remember the book). In reality they probably forgot to clear the lint filter in the drier or something. Poor boys, at least they were trying to do laundry, unlike the Duggar boys who are happy just to bitch about not having anyone to clean their clothes.

I missed that part.

I'm pretty sure the little boys were playing with a lighter, I think that's what Gil said anyways.

Yeah, the kids were playing with a lighter. I think they knew enough to know that it was a "bad" thing to do, which is why they hid in the laundry room to play around with it. I still wonder who was supposed to be watching them. I guess Josie and Katie (or was Katie in FL, I forget that part)? Was Carlin even attempting to go to Clown then? Because now it looks like she's pre-courting. Josie is at their cosmetology school. That leaves Katie (maybe?), Nathan (never mentioned if he was on the tree job) and Trace, really. Lawson had pulled an all-nighter, and Gil and the boys had left on a tree job, but with no mention of Nathan, all we know is that he took the middle boys.

What I'm trying (very badly) to say is that the fire wasn't THAT early in the morning. The girls were likely at school and everyone else in the house downstairs doing school or whatever. Any older boy who wasn't sleeping or on a tree job and Katie (if she was even there) were in charge. This is why you don't have 19 kids.

That pink/white striped romper with the big sailor collar- I have a picture of my daughter in that outfit!  On her first birthday!  She was born in 1989.

Oh, sailor collars were still big in the 90's. My wedding had 50 people at my parents' house. We had one attendant each. My sister (L, local) in this pic and my SIL (R, from NYC) were not in the wedding party.

There is a good  chance they did get a spanking ,  but I have never  seen the kids scared  of anyone.  Once the youngest  one got into trouble  about something  and Gil said they needed to have a talk he very trustingly  (is that a word?)  took Gils hand and they walked off, no fear, in fact it was cute. So while I think they get a spanking when needed I do not think they are beat.

To me, the hand's look young.    I think Gil's would be weathered from his tree cutting business.

Jill - your children shouldn't have phones. What they need now is food, not phones you idiot. They look starving & underfeed.

This woman is a total nut and I really feel for the kids.  Wonder if any of the Duggars look at them and think that could be them or worse when TLC decides they will quite sponsoring crazy fundies?  Had tv not come calling, with 19 kids, they would REALLY have a lower quality of living.

I have seen very few episodes of this show (don't get that channel) and I have seen this scene.  You are right, he didn't look scared.  The Bates are a much cuter family than the Duggars.  They have the same stinking ideas but are more attractive.

"A seemingly squeaky-clean Christian family band from Tennessee consisting of 12 telegenic kids who gained fame on America’s Got Talent and got their own TLC reality show has quietly imploded with the arrest of the children’s father on a child rape charge in Kentucky.

"Toby Willis, 46, the hard-driving patriarch of The Willis Clan who said he expected his kids to achieve “excellence” in all they did, was arrested in tiny Greenville, Kentucky, on Sept. 9, just hours before his family was to perform in concert at the Felix Martin Jr. Hall.

"After Willis was taken away from the venue in handcuffs on a fugitive from justice warrant by Greenville police and detectives from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, his family went ahead with the show anyway, a source close to the case said.

"The TBI began investigating Willis on Aug. 29 after receiving information that Willis had a sexual encounter about 12 years ago with an underage child, according to a police statement issued after Willis’s arrest. In Tennessee the charge of child rape applies to the sexual assault of children between the ages of 3 and 12.

"Nashville’s Newschannel5 reported Wednesday night that Willis had allegedly been charged with raping a family member. It said the family member had been 'removed by Willis from her bed and raped.' It also reported that 'authorities confirmed Willis was not allowed to go around his biological children or his wife.'"

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/09/14/the-willis-clan-no-more-a-christian-family-band-comes-apart-amid-child-rape-allegations.html

Toby's prelimenary hearing on the charges was rescheduled four times.

"Toby Willis was arraigned on four counts of child rape on Monday, March 13, in Ashland City after a grand jury heard his case, said Circuit Court Clerk Julie Hibbs.

"Willis pleaded not guilty to the charges, read by Circuit Judge Larry Wallace. His official plea date is set for July 11, and the trial is set to begin July 18."

Jill said in the Megyn Kelly interview that "statistics say" that 2/3 of families expeienced this. I'd love to know where she got those numbers. Too lazy to drag up the interview now, but she used the word "statistics," so it's really on her to produce the "study" that produced them.

It's also part of the TLC family show world: The Willis Family (now canceled, of course) and the Honey Boo Boo show (resurrected on another network).

Jill: " And I feel for the other families out there. I mean, statistics say two-thirds of families deal with something like that and that's only the families who are reporting it. And I feel for the other victims out there and other families who maybe the parents may take a pause before they do something to report or to take care of what's going on, and maybe, you know, these other victims will continue to live just not even having their situations dealt with."

Hmm....Bates, Duggar, Willis = 2/3 had this stuff going on. Even a broke clock is right twice a day, right Jill?

So is this why the oldest Willis girl left their band/show, etc? Article says she is 24, so 12 years ago would've been 12. This is total Nancy Drew speculation on my part.

The Tennessee newspaper reference was dated in March of this year, 2017.  He has apparently has not been to trial yet but under psychological exam at the request of his lawyer.  We should check the paper for how the case advances from this point on, and we'll catch the whole trial.
