Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

Oy gevalt; can't believe that didn't occur to me.  Got my kishkes all stirred up there.

In my head it was more the British 'oy' than the Yiddish.  Maybe b/c of this:

But "oy" (as in oy vey) sounds more like I.

For the Yiddish, I've heard it in various ways.

When churches go a little too far with the social/community aspect. My church decided they wanted to plan a trivia night…to be held directly after Mass on a Saturday. I mean, it’s not a bar? There are multiple bars and breweries in the area that hold trivia nights during the week if that’s your type of activity, and they’re actually appropriate venues for it.

We also have Bingo fundraisers, as a lot of churches in the area do, but they’re often held in fire halls or at least not immediately after Mass ends if they’re using the church hall for the event.

Besides, my mom and I joked that whoever thought this was a good idea has not looked at the average age of a Saturday Mass attendee. 🤣The mostly over-60 crowd is not going to stick around to play trivia. And I think using a social event that’s better hosted at a bar to draw people to church is pushing the lines of what’s appropriate. How many people from the public who go to our Bingo events start coming to church? Probably very few, if anybody…

At least, it seems like that would be a self-resolving problem. If it proves to be unpopular, the church would realize that and change course. Worst case, they attract a new crowd, and you don’t have to have anything to do with it.

I don't get folks who say things they know will upset most if not all other people in their presence then claim to be hurt at these other folks' unhappy and/or hostile reactions.

I mean, if one truly dislikes others' objections to what they say, how tough can it be just to avoid saying these things they know will upset the others? That makes as much sense is claiming to hate hearing cats snarling and hissing yet continually stepping on their tails!

The concept of keeping your damn mouth shut eludes too many people.

We all have pet peeves (hence this thread!) but some people have turned their pet peeve into righteous indignation over the trivial.

Case in point - there is a viral post going around where someone is pointing to the light over the stove and saying, clearly exasperated "this is NOT a night light".  The clear message being only idiots leave that light on.  My question is "why the hell does this person care what someone else, in the privacy of their own home, is doing with ANY of their light fixtures"?  This bothers you so much you had to create a meme for it?  Sad.

Social media challenges that are not only stupid, but actually dangerous (ok, to be fair, I complain about the stupid ones too if I become aware of them, but this is special). Apparently there is some new tiktok challenge for kids to eat as much paracetamol as they can without getting sick enough to be hospitalized. We can all see the obvious problem with the second part, right?

If it was just about adults, I would probably write it off with some snarky comment about darwinism at work, but it's tricky when it comes to children - they are still developing their critical thinking skills and should be allowed to be stupid on the internet to some degree without actually risking their lives. I don't even know who to blame at this point - parents, teachers, legislation, social media in general? The restrictions for social media access for children that everyone keeps talking about can't come soon enough, IMO.

To borrow from another thread, I don't see how busywork in earning girl scout badges is so bad.

I'm on a news blackout, but I'm gathering the tiktok ban didn't happen.  That's a shame.

That is insane and so dumb and dangerous!!

I had to look it up to be sure it's not a hoax. It isn't.

Paracetamol - that's acetaminophen, right?  What we Yanks think of as Tylenol?  Like, the stuff that puts out the dire warnings about overdoses - even slightly above the recommended dose can be toxic?

Insane indeed.  I couldn't bring myself to look it up.

Lately, my dad has been adding more Cantonese in conversation, even with my husband present.  It’s increasingly annoying.  He’s also been adding “la” (eg “why don’t you eat that, la?”  La is often used in Cantonese, similar to “eh” in Canadian…but using it too many times is weird) to sentences more frequently as well.  I think it’s age but it kind of bothers me.

Curious, is your family background more Mandarin [northern] than Cantonese [southern]? IIRC, Mandarin is somewhat considered to be 'proper' Chinese while Cantonese is more . .slangy (at least that was my impression from the Chinese community when I was in Singapore)?

Canto.  My family is from Hong Kong.

Yes it's Tylenol.  In the usa it's acetaminophen

So your dad is approaching 80?  That's when we noticed the first signs my mom was having some issues.  He may be using more Cantonese because the words come to him more easily than the English word.  La is a space filler it seems.  That gives him a pause to frame his next thought or sentence.  If it's memory/language issues, please try to have some patience with him.  If it's memory, he can't control it and the more issue is made of it, the more frustrated he'll become.

I would agree but, thankfully, he missed the entire Japanese Occupation by two years (which the Singaporeans by and large still recall with angst).

My paternal grandmother was from mainland and was part of a theatre troupe performing anti-Japanese propaganda.  I believe that my grandfather was involved as well (and that was how they met).  Yeh Yeh was from Hong Kong and I think marrying him was also a way for her to get out of China considering the future was uncertain due to communists.

@Absolom yes, my dad turns 78 later this year.  And sadly, I think you’re right about language.  English is technically NOT my first language but it’s most definitely the language I know best.  I wonder what would happen when I’m elderly.  Like, would I even be able to communicate because my level of Cantonese is that of a six year old’s!  At best.  And that doesn’t include reading and writing.  My literacy level is equivalent to a kindergarten student.

I'm sorry, local meteorologist,  I don't consider a high of 48F to be "mild."  A high in the low 60s is mild.  48F still falls in the chilly to cold range.

Where are you?  48F works out to be about 9 Celsius.  That’s mild for this time of year, warm, even, in Toronto.

For those interested in the difference between Cantonese and Mandarin, here’s a video of a woman reciting the last stanza of the Ballad of Mulan in both

Since the poem goes back centuries, it’s fair to say the language has evolved A LOT.  But people do say the rhyming scheme is more frequent in Cantonese, which suggests that Cantonese sticks more to its roots.

The women's clothing store I patronize because  the one I preferred is shut down (in part because the owner of the chain is a sexual predator who is now in jail - but I digress) anyway the store I now go to seems to have discontinued the styles of jeans and dressy pants I like.  It looks like they've decided to try to compete with all the other clothing stores catering to the under 30 market that are  lined up and down the aisles in every mall.  Damn.

The VERY Canadian and local brand I've been promoting since everyone is trying to buy things that are as Canadian as possible actually doesn't fit my body type!  Their XS looks like a tent in the belly area, making me look shapeless.  Their leggings are great though.  And their OLD sizing fits well.

Around here it's "Nah we don't  need no stinking coat" 😃!

Yeah, I'm in Iowa and if it were 46 degrees here today, we'd be like, "Oh, light coat weather." People would be thrilled to have it be in the 40s this time of year here (not me, though, it's still February, we can keep the cold weather for a while longer).

Now, having said that, if it were October and it were in the 40s, then everyone would be like, "Ooh, getting chilly out here, fall has arrived!" :p. It really is all relative.

It is, and it also makes a difference if it's sunny or cloudy.  Cloudy 48 is colder than sunny 48, but I maintain that neither one could be considered mild in my neck of the woods.  I went for a walk today in the sunny, 45F afternoon, and still needed a jacket over my sweatshirt, and I wore light gloves, too.

I'm looking at a week of highs around -23C with wind chills in the -30s to -40s. It's been a while since February has been this cold.

It's been colder and snowier here than it has for awhile. Ski hills are happy and the Rideau Canal (world's longest skate way) is open for a full season for a change!

Ever since I first saw a picture of people skating on this canal, I've wanted to do the same. I never enjoyed skating in a rink. We used to skate on a frozen swamp in the woods, so we were always skating from one section of it to another. Must be fun traveling along the canal on one's skates.

I prefer winter (beastly hot summer will be here soon enough 🥵) but we have family arriving on Friday and I don't need another snowstorm keeping me from running all my errands.

I'm having the same problem. I think I posted here about the nightmare I went through buying jeans on Amazon in a style they stopped carrying at Kohls. I had to buy several pairs in different sizes to find 2 that fit and looked good and returning them was not as easy and convenient as they promised - long story. Now Kohl's has mostly wide and flare legs. Stuff that mostly works on a young person's figure. And a tall person's. Being short, those wide legs look ridiculous on me. I can only get away with them in stretchy pull on fabrics and even then they don't always work on me.

Just when you think it's over...my super was about to finish painting the bedroom after he encapsulated and painted over it after the flaking lead paint issue - and then I saw paint flaking in the closet.  Which is full of stuff I will now have to remove and toss most or all of.  Worse news, he will have to deal with the other closet there as well before repainting. More stuff to toss...sigh.  I can't deal with the rest of the apartment - which also has paint issues but not nearly as bad - until I can go away for a while in May - but there will be so much de-cluttering and tossing ahead. Fortunately my record collection and stereo can go to a young relative who's into that stuff.

Also fortunately I guess, I don't live in a house.  Much as I would otherwise love to.

Post after whiny post all over FB about how awful the half-time show was accompanied by post after post about how Taylor Swift sucks.  Most posted by middle aged and older white guys.  Give me a freaking break.  If you're middle aged or older and you liked the show good for you but if you didn't well join the crowd.  And try to remember when your own parents were rolling their eyes at you and saying "you call that music?" or if you are a baby boomer remember when your parents were saying "those Beatles are awful and they need a haircut".

Every generation is entitled to their own music and one day the "kids" who like this music will be the ones rolling their eyes at their children and saying "they don't write songs the way they used to".

Marketing emails. Some of these stores (mostly online stores) or other businesses whose emails I’m signed up for are sending at least 3-4 emails a day, and it’s getting excessive. Trust me, I only need to know one time you are having an extra 25% off sale or free shipping. I’m getting so fed up I’m thinking of unsubscribing from all of them and just checking the websites of my favorites to see when they have sales. I don’t know if they are hurting for business or something but it’s giving me a headache.

On a side note, I need to set aside some time soon to organize my inbox and declutter it, which will probably include some unsubscribing.

Good lord, this, thank you. Not to say people who aren't the typical listener can't or won't enjoy it, of course, obviously they can, but...yeah, of course most middle aged white guys aren't going to "get" Taylor Swift or Kendrick. The music isn't geared to them. Shocking, I know.

My favorites are the people who claim rap music isn't music. If somebody doesn't personally care for a certain genre of music, whatever, to each their own, but it's still actual music whether you (general "you") like it or not.

This is what's wrong with the world today - middle aged and older white guys who actually do think the freaking world revolves around them.  It's hardly surprising they'd be like this about music when they're like this about everything else!

And yeah, I'm not into rap music or country music or jazz either for that matter (I mean to quote the Duchess about jazz - do the musicians know they are supposed to play the same song?) but I am not pompous enough to decree "thou shalt not like what I do not like".

Sad to say that isn't what's wrong with the world today.  That's how the world has been my entire life.  I'm definitely older than middle age.

I was six when my mother ran her uncle out of the house because he came in bellowing because my mother dared feed the hungry children first after a funeral.  He said the menfolk need to be fed first. She said something like go live off the fat between your ears.  You have enough of it.  Men get fed last in my house.  You go first too much of the time in life.

I’m peeved with a bunch of my cozy mystery series.  While I’m glad that the author is continuing the series, they are now being independently published. So the library doesn’t get them anymore and they seem to be published On Demand through Amazon.  I AM glad to support authors and their work. I just hate giving $$ to Bezos.

I don't get people who get randomly defensive. I once knew someone who referred to dinner as "supper" (I live in the South, regional thing, I guess), and she snottily said that that's what she chose to call it... even though I didn't say a damn word, and I don't think my expression betrayed a single thing. She apparently assumed I was judging her.

In case anyone is wondering, I legitimately do not care what you call your meals: dinner, supper, happy-dappy yum yum time, I DON'T CARE!
