Watching the US and UK versions of the Frankenstein trailer was an interesting experience.  The former focused on snarky humor and a sense of adventure, and the latter was much more sober and gothic horror-y like the story really is.  The film might be both, but it's fascinating how editing and background music changes the perception of the narrative. The latter also showed a female character being intellectually curious and circumspect, while the former showed one (doesn't appear to be the same one) as droll and playful.

Um, the Indian chief of NASA, Vinkat Kapoor, is being played by Chiwetel Ejiofor?  Beautiful Beth Johansson is played by Rooney Mara? The Korean scientist Mindy Park is played by blonde Mackenzie Davis? Based on the cast list, the entire Chinese storyline is dumped.

But I do want to see this.  I'm reading the book right now, and from the preview, it retains a lot of the humor that's in the book.  Watney is a smartass in the book.

Rooney Mara is getting the acting raves from Carol.

From what I've seen they're both getting major gushing raves. Mara was singled out for the Cannes award, but I read a few reviews calling it a career-best performance for Blanchett, which is kind of saying something.

Carol looks good, but to be honest, if I'm watching a queer movie, I want it to be two hot guys falling in love, not two women. I just don't have any interest in lesbian love stories.

Rooney Mara seriously rocks the hell out of the Audrey Hepburn 50's pixie cut, though. I wish her and Cate the best during awards season.

Kate Mara, not Rooney Mara.

I liked this clip released about two months ago where Watney takes the audience on a tour of Hermes.

Went to see Southpaw today and saw a trailer for some 60's-era gangster piece about the Kray brothers.  The story looks interesting but I honestly struggled to understand half of the dialogue.  And that was just in the trailer.  I'm usually pretty adept with British accents but these were on a whole 'nother level.  I won't be spending any boxoffice dollars on that one.  Need to wait for On Demand when I can rewind to decipher.

That would be Legend, starring Tom Hardy:

Lionsgate are developing a Borderlands movie! Interesting. Very much in the I'll believe it when I see it category. However, the first game at least does have a decent plot, though it's spread thin between all the jokey bits and sidequests and so on. Apart from the odd ending. It's a game with good bones for a story, much like Skyrim. And hey, who doesn't like a good movie shootout? There will be plenty of those at least!

Adore Bryson, and this may be my favourite Redford role of the last 20 years. Great cast.

Was actually going to post this - just heard about this now.  I agree the cast looks great.  Nolte as Katz is a great choice, as is Kristen Schaal as the annoying girl on the trail.  Very funny book and the movie looks fairly true to it with some embellishments.

I hardly ever see promos so thanks all for posting - the Frankenstein, Legends and Concussion movies all look good.

Frontline filmed a documentary called League of Denial about concussions and the NFL that is excellent and worth a watch if that interests you.

The first thing I thought of when I read this post was the series of shared-universe books by various authors (Charles DeLint, (Neil Gaiman, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, and more).

That's fair enough. But do those books feature a bazillion guns? Because if not, it'll be the games. :)

Oh, it's definitely based on the game - however, since I'm not into gaming I had no idea that there even was a Borderlands game ... my only frame of reference is the books of the same name.  ;-)

And then there's this thing, which involves a bunch of talented people showing up in what looks like a Hallmark Movie Channel reject.

While watching this trailer I kept thinking this looks like a "low rent" version of the "The Family Stone" (which I actually love).  Then at the end we find out it is from the producers of Stone.  Love all the actors involved but this looks horrible.

Wow, The Danish Girl looks really good. I suspect I'm going to get a lot of dust in my eyes while watching that. On a shallow note, Eddie makes a stunning woman...in addition to being a beautiful guy.

My main takeaway from The Danish Girl trailer is a reminder that Ben Whishaw should be in more stuff. Nothing against Eddie Redmayne, but I kind of wish he was playing the lead instead, just because I'd like to see him get more high profile/leading roles. As much as I like guys like Cumberbatch, Hiddleston, and Fassbender, I'm not sure that Whishaw isn't the most talented of that whole generation of British/Scottish/Irish actors.

Although between this, Suffragette, and Spectre he should have a pretty good fall, and since the first two look like primo Oscar bait maybe he'll get pulled along with one of them into the conversation.

I adore Whishaw. He really steals his scenes in a very subtle way. His style is not as effusive which is something I like. I think his youthful and androgynous looks works against him to be cast as a lead though. He actually played a woman in Cloud Atlas as well. He has nice comic timing as well. I hope he keeps working because he may start looking older and he'll get more even more roles as a result.

It's a game with good bones for a story, much like Skyrim.  . .

Skyrim: The Movie. It's ten hours long. The main character picks flowers, makes weapons, wanders off to fus ro dah unsuspecting sheep and occasionally fights dragons. And, while the movie is running, audience members get to interrupt it and show their short film fanfics as a "mod" to the original movie.

Don't forget the wisecracking guard who used to be an adventurer like the lead until he "took an arrow to the knee" (thanks Internet, for the running that into the ground...)

I can just imagine the pitch for this movie. "You know that Anne Hathaway movie where she's an intern at a fashion magazine? This is just like it, but the mirror opposite! Like Star Trek, when Spock had a beard!  She's the boss this time. And the intern isn't a young woman, it's an old dude. And it's not a creative company, it's tech. . . "

Earlier on, when the first trailer was released I was remarking that all you had to do was get Meryl Streep to shoot a cameo and you could sell this as The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The Lobster starring Colin Farell and Rachel Weisz.

In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the rules of The City, are taken to The Hotel where they are obliged to find a matching mate in forty-five days. If they fail, they are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. In that setting, one man escapes into The Woods and falls in love with a Loner, despite the rules.

This film won Jury Prize at Cannes.

I'm so in.
