Honestly. FDR as a TS for teachers is disgraceful.

Perhaps it's because I've lived in Central New York my entire life and it's still kind of a big deal, but I was really surprised at the Erie Canal miss.

However, I am still giggling at the thought of Norah Roberts as a children's author.

Good god I've never heard anyone outside of porn as excited about the possibility of a beard-off before.

Yikes, Eric had a really bad game. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was out-buzzed by the other two, because I can't believe he didn't know some of those answers. Those prefixes were right up a Latin teacher's alley, as was "E Pluribus Unum." But he did irk me a little in his interview when he said that he became a teacher because he had no practical skills. Way to reinforce that damned "Those who can't, teach" stereotype!

 

I agree that it was shocking that all three missed FDR, although Truman made more sense as an answer than Eisenhower. Truman did become president the next year on FDR's death.

 

There were a number of plausible candidates for FJ, with all the jukebox musicals around. My first thought was Dreamgirls, although it would be a stretch to call them rock and rollers.

I am unsurprised that others had the same thought I did - three teachers cannot answer a question that is, essentially, "who was being re-elected in 1944?" Truman? Eisenhower? And silence?

 

Embarrassing game for the guy with no skills and no sense of humor. Guess he shouldn't quit his day job ... or maybe he should, but I don't know what his fall-back plan would be.

No more of a stretch than calling Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons rock and rollers.  There's some messed up stuff in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

What is a beard-off? 

Alex said people were talking about a possible beard-off because each semi-final had a bearded guy in it, one of whom was already into the finals. Since the show tapes way before it airs, who knows who these people are. Maybe it's just Alex. And then Alex said "But don't underestimate the women" (or was it "ladies"?). Okay. Then when it was clear the bearded guy in Tuesday's game wasn't going to win, Alex said there would be no beard-off. Oy with the beards already!

I consider myself a pretty educated Chicagoan, so I was surprised to hear Mary talk about working at a suburban school that has always had open education and just celebrated its 175th anniversary. If anyone else is curious, it's Elgin Academy in Elgin.  I don't know why or how it flew under my radar.  It was founded when Chicago just had a couple thousand residents.  Impressive longevity.

I went with Webster for the FJ because I couldn't think of anyone else.  Then metaphorically did the V-8 head slap when the correct answer was revealed.  D'oh!


Heck, my guess for FJ was 'Roget'.

 

For the one DD, I said The Sea of Tasmanian. Is that acceptable for The Tasman Sea?

 

I got Larry Fine. Seemed easy to me.

Tasman Sea was a complete guess for me.  I knew it existed, but thought it might have been between mainland Australia and Tasmania, not between Australia and New Zealand.

 

I've never found the Three Stooges to be funny, and know almost nothing about them as individuals, so although I recognized Larry, I wouldn't have known his last name if my life had depended on it.

I was excited when they said she was Hoffman Estates (used to live in Hoffman) and even more excited when they showed her kids with the banner of Elgin Academy cuz I live in Elgin!  As a decades long equestrian,  I have a nit to pick about the clue that had "jodhpurs" as the answer.  What was shown was breeches.  Breeches are worn with high (aka tall) boots.  Jodhpurs are worn with paddock boots or jodhpur boots.  Both are ankle boots and the jods go over the boots and have an elastic strap that goes under the sole of the boot to keep the jods from riding up.

That 3-letter word category in the Jeopardy with words containing 'Y' was insultingly simple, even for the kids tournament.

 

And then they proceeded to show each of the comedians for the clues in Comedians category -- did they really need a video clip for Jerry Seinfeld ?

 

Both Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy rounds were really easy -- way too easy for the Finals of a tournament.  The only really tough question was FJ -- I guessed Frobisher since he was another Englishman that charted North America, but he died earlier than 1611.

 

Having said that, congrats to Jennifer on her win.

The question that the guy answered Pharrell to...shouldn't he have been made to say Pharrell Williams? Because I could have sworn Pharrell one-name was a totally different performer.

I mean, I also could be talking out my ass and it's all the same person.

I don't think this is two people. Pharrell and Pharrell Williams are one and the same.

 

I think the only TS I got was smoke signals.

I completely agree about the Battle of the Decades. Inserting Ken Jennings into anything ups the charm quotient, the winner Whatshisface (Brad?) had a personality even if I wasn't that enamored with him and Roger was funny, which I've come to understand was a 180 from his prior appearances.

These teachers were pleasant enough, but nothing I'd really remember. Maybe it comes from the other three guys having appeared hundreds of times and these teachers just a few times.

Or maybe Alex was simply saying it was fun for him, since he seemed to be having a good time with the finalists. He may have liked this group particularly, and the BotD was probably a pretty high stress event as Jeopardy tournaments go for him. I certainly enjoyed the BotD more, but I really only watch for the clues, not the contestants.

I thought "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" was enough of a jumbo hint, but then to have his picture too? I wonder about this show sometimes...

 

Was pleasantly surprised when I got FJ, wasn't totally confident about it. It always gives me a smug feeling when I get a FJ TS :)

I was thrilled as heck to get the FJ.  I don't know anything about Henry Hudson, but Hudson Bay was the only thing on the map that I could think of which might've fit the clue, so I guessed Hudson.

I sort of question Alex's statement at the end of "This was the most fun of any tournament that I can recall."  The contestants were as a whole very pleasant, but I didn't find it any more riveting than any other tournament.  I thought the battle of the decades was far more delightful...

Alex is still recovering from being browbeaten by irate behind the scene parents.

The only really tough question was FJ -- I guessed Frobisher since he was another Englishman that charted North America, but he died earlier than 1611.

I also said Frobisher but switched to Henry Hudson since his name on the map is much more prominent than Frobisher's - not just a bay but a river too, right through New York.

 

I laughed at the woman in the middle saying Horatio Alger after the other one was ruled wrong for Horatio Hornblower - and then she was wrong too.  At least they both laughed about it.
