Here's a belated post for Groundhog Day.  We consider our resident groundhog, Scrappy, to be a member of the family.  He has a den under the deck.  He chows down on our crabapples in the fall.  It's hard to see in this picture taken last fall through a screen, but he's chowing down in the background and you can see the door to his den.  He runs into the den if you spook him, so I had to take the picture surreptitiously from inside the kitchen.

One of my childhood cats used to hide under the bed just on the other side of the bed skirt and wait for someone to walk up to the bed so she could reach out and grab their ankle.

That's great hunting behavior.  Our cat Bubbles was a dedicated mouser.  She would crouch in front of the crack between the sink and the dishwasher waiting for a mouse to come out and then she would pounce.  She had great concentration and patience.  This was a spot favored by mice.

Yep. I tremble for any critter that gets into our house. Elizabeth was feral when we first got her and she displays fantastic hunting behaviors. The only thing that worries me is that rodents are such well known disease vectors and I don't want her getting sick

One of my house lions thinks my bathmat is a cat bed. It's the same one who actually used the cat bed properly, instead of laying next to it. Win!

Trixie sitting next to the Snoozzy mat!  Snoozzy mat, keep away from me!  Snoozzy mat, feh.  I ended up giving it away.

We have a couple kitty beds, one for each cat.. Lily did curl up in hers for a time, but she hasn't done so in a while, and we're not really sure why. Lately she's taken to laying in a basket - it's just the right size for her, she can stretch out and fill it up perfectly.

And Mitsi never even bothered to try out her kitty bed, but in her case, I think that's mainly because she figures if she did, Lily would just come along and steal it away from her at some point :p.  She likes to curl up on one of the shelves in a little cupboard in my mom's room that contains some of her clothes. She does that a lot in the winter especially. It's nice and warm in there, especially with a heating vent nearby.

They both definitely love to sit in the sun, too, yes. There's a spot in the kitchen where the sun beams through the window onto the floor and our cats love to lounge in that spot all the time :D.

I bought two dog beds for the puppies (they are almost ten years old but they are papillion's and less than nine pounds each so we still call them 'the puppies' :p) last Christmas. Originally I bought just one and figured I'd buy another one if they liked it - the small bed would have been big enough for both of them but Lexie isn't so much for the sharing, hah - and they liked it so I ended up buying another one. The beds sit in the office and Lily, in particular, likes to be in there when we are in there working :)

Elizabeth tried to eat hers.

I used to have dog beds for the old dogs pre-Norman. Danny would flop down on the big Labrador sized bed (provided that Carl the cat wasn't cozied up in the middle of it.) And Neo would curl up in his small dog sized bed in his crate.

But now if I tossed a large dog bed down for Norman, I am fairly certain he would consider it a gigantic dog toy to sink his teeth into and toss around the house wildly.

So no bed for Norm.

That's the way she is too. Everything is either a toy or food.

Huck has a lot of dog beds, He uses them off and on. The first really nice one that I got him, though, was this big comfy bed with a memory foam siding, It sat next to my desk and he would sometimes use it while I was working. And then I would look over and he would be chomping on that memory foam side. I finally ended up throwing out the side of it and just using the bottom of the bed.

The only other time he went after his own bed (my beds he tries to eat alot) was one time when I left him in a kennel with a memory foam bed. I got home and he had entirely shredded that bed. Now, when I leave, I gate off the bottom of the stairs and he can have my bedroom, the hall and the stairs.

The Girl Cat has 2 new beds. She slept in one a few times and has not deigned to acknowledge the other. But she loves the heated pad I got her after I saw her sleeping on a heating vent. She has arthritis in her hips, poor puss. It's been an exciting few weeks with pills and rearranging litter boxes and vet visits.

She'll find the other and make it her favorite at some point.  Mine change things up every few months, as if to say, "oh, when did this get here?"  Part of the master plan to keep us guessing.

My cat Maddie had arthritis in her old age, and got great relief from Adequan (the canine formula, which can be prescribed off-label for cats; the dosage is based on the cat's weight).  It doesn't just reduce joint inflammation, it stimulates production of joint fluid and cartilage to actually repair (to some extent) the joints.  It's a series of eight injections over the course of a month*, so if you can't do that yourself it's likely not worth it because that would be a lot of stressful trips to the vet's office in a short time.  But if you can (there's some indication it's more effective if given as an intramuscular injection, so that's what I did, but it can be injected subcutaneously instead if that's easier), I recommend talking to your vet about it and giving it a try, because it has very few potential side effects and they're minor.

*Some vets prescribe a maintenance dose, but the manufacturer sent out a "knock it off" memo, saying R&D turned up zero evidence that had any beneficial effect.

My Mom sent me flowers for Valentine’s but I think it will be a long time before I can put a vase on my dining room table because Cavendish gets into EVERYTHING and I’m 99% sure I’d come home to a broken vase and water everywhere.

The flowers are now on my desk in my office with the door closed. Lady Reese questioning why I won’t let her sleep on my bed.

I always said that if any of my cats learned to use a computer, I’d be in BIG trouble. 😁

Elizabeth doesn't know about Amazon or Chewy but if she could use my computer it would be bird videos 24/7. I used to let her watch them on my phone when I first got the hyperactive little shit to give myself 10 minutes of peace.

I have a kitty who has always liked to "play" computer games (i.e. bat at the stuff on the screen).  It was even on his "fact sheet" from the shelter.  So I found a game for my tablet that lets the "user" bat at mice on the screen, and even snaps a photo when they get one.  Of course he totally ignores it.

Elizabeth used to get so excited batting at the birdies, she'd end up changing the videos. I'd be going "huh, why is there suddenly mariachi music coming out of my phone?"

Our cat before the current one managed to log onto the internet on my husband's desktop. I said she must've been looking for kitty porn.

The current one danced all over my keyboard while I was here one day and opened a bunch of people's profiles. Very fancy footwork.

Catlike typing detected.

When I worked from home regularly my one cat would walk across the laptop looking for attention and would consistently hit the key combo to rotate the screen 90 degrees.  She did it so often that I finally had to write the combo on a post it so I wouldn't have to waste time googling it.

My other cat loves the cat fishing app so much that I had to haul out my old iPad for him to use, so that's now officially "his" iPad.  😄

I feel like if our cats got access to our laptops they'd probably just lay on them and go to sleep or something :p. I honestly don't know what they'd be interested in watching online, 'cause they aren't really the sort to watch videos or stuff on TV or whatever.

Elizabeth is the first cat I've ever had who does that. OMG! They're evolving, what's next? Thumbs?
