Food Network and Cooking Channel: One is about food

Regarding my mention of Masterchef UK: The Professionals above, I have seen only seasons 4 and 5, and delightful is an understatement. They are probably available on the Internet somewhere. I need to "carve" out the time and find the more recent seasons.

Paul Hollywood  (The Great British Baking Show) has a new show on the Cooking Channel on Saturday mornings -  Paul Hollywood City Bakes. I like it.

Ariel, since it was raining  this morning, the pooch and I snuggled up for a bit of Cooking channel watching and saw the Paris episode. I cannot believe that this was his first trip to Paris!

Me three shocked that he'd never been to Paris before!  I've been to Paris, and I had to go a lot farther to get there, I was a lot younger when I first went, and I don't make my living as a baker and pastry chef.  It's kind of like being in musical theater and never going to see a Broadway show.  When you're really passionate about your craft, you make pilgrimages like that, especially when it's such an easy trip.

I just found this show.  Has it been on for a while now? I like Paul, but this episode at least was a little disappointing.  He kept saying that things were amazing!  Which they are, but it would've been much more enjoyable if he'd imparted some real information and picked the French bakers' brains a bit more.  I'm still in, but I hope it gets better.

OH boy...am I the only one who has seen Ayesha's Homemade on FN? She is pretty but I've seen two episodes and wow, does she think she is a million times prettier than she is. I guess when you're married to a talented multi-millionaire athlete you can think what you want. This is just another show of a foodie wanting a show and  inviting family/friends over for a contrived event. After two episodes I've learned a new word...."amazing!" Everything is amazing! She might have some cooking talent but for me, it is buried by the way she plays up to the camera and her interaction with all the beautiful people. I think we former fans of FN should stage a coup, storm the FN offices and reprogram this channel.

If your PBS stations carries CREATE, go there. You'll see plenty of good cooking shows.

Yes, and I'm so glad to see them come out with a new season.

I wish FN, CC, HGTV, and DIY would quit the marathon programming. I used to time my mornings at the gym on the treadmill so I could watch Brunch @ Bobby's and Mexican Made Easy. So inconsiderate of them. ;-)

Guy was OK the first couple of years of DDD. But then...the "i'm so cute" mugging for the camera, the catch phrases, the shouting.

 What the hell is wrong with Food Network?   First they kidified ever damn show they produce, and now they're doing a baking riff on all their shows.  First it was that Worst Cooks spin off with Duff and Lorraine and now they've done a baking version of that awful Cooks vs. Cons (Bakers vs. Fakers).   As if the concept isn't bad enough, they've now brought Buddy "Cake Boss" Valastro back into the Food Network fold and made him host.   He'll fit in wonderfully with Guy and the inexplicably re-surging Robert Irvine.

Hated seeing it ski-slope even faster than TLC and A&E from being intelligent, respectful and helpful to being crass, obnoxious and loud and since everyone else has already gone over the 'usual suspects' of Guy Fieri, Rachael Ray, Alton Brown, etc., I'll skip adding to the dissing of them for now.

 

 However; the ones who I believe TRULY deserve disses for how this network devolved have to be the execs/Next Food Network Star personalities Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson. Not only were these two incredibly condescending to the contestants but Miss Fogelson in particular seemed to revel in urging contestants to spill their guts at her command like a toxic acquaintance  seeking future ammo saying that   cooking personalities were expected to totally wash their dirty laundry to appeal to home audiences. OK, when I watch a cooking show or go to a restaurant, ALL I care about is whether the food is good and how clean& efficient the cook and kitchen are. If the cook wants to drop an aside e.g. 'My daughter's soccer teams loves these nachos!' that's fine  though not required. However; I truly do NOT need to know their entire life stories, genealogy and psychological struggles. The culminated in Melissa d'Arabian presenting a dish to judges with the tag that it reminded her of her mother who'd committed suicide. Man, I felt sorry for those judges because HOW could they enjoy the food after hearing that bombshell (which was truly no one else's business) yet not feel they'd have been tagged as heels for not praising it to the hilt. Yes, I did indeed feel very bad for her but IMO this is something that one should share with close, trusted friends and family NOT strangers and the whole world. Oh, and to cap it all off,   Mr. Tuschman or Miss Fogelson NEVER made the slightest attempt to disclose ANY personal info about themselves (not even any asides about any possible parents, sibs, significant others, offspring or friends). For all the viewers knew they could have been raised by owls and never met another person in their lives before judging this show- despite her  dictum that ALL Food Network personalities (which they technically were via this show) were supposed to wash dirty laundry on air .Hypocrites.

Bob was let go from FN last year and while Suzie is still there (or was) she was excluded from the most recent FNS--probably as to not highlight the absence of Kermit   Most of what we've seen the past year appears to be the doing of his replacement who, among other things, thinks we want to see more "celebrities".

If I was a FN exec - I would have someone assigned to read what is being said about the network online.  They could learn a lot from sites like this one.  Even with all the snarky fun, there is a lot of good feedback and some good ideas.  This would be viewer input that is honest and free!

FN used to have its own message boards, where viewers commented on the various shows & discussed them with other viewers.  Rather than taking advantage of that opportunity to learn how its audience felt about its offerings, FN decided to eliminate the boards because it didn't want to pay staff to monitor & moderate them.

Celebrities, kids, and bakers. Sometimes two of the three at once! Also after the whole Justin and Kenny incidents Alton Brown ran away from FNS and it's been worst from it.

 There are two famous pasty chefs on tonight's Beat Bobby Flay, and one of the judges is a kid.  Even Bobby's not immune from the bake- and kid-ification of the network.

 I'm now firmly convinced Kermit was replaced by Cookie Monster.

Good Lord...I was cruising through the channels the other night when all of a sudden I saw a very hefty woman in an orange blouse scampering around a kitchen, then opening a door to let her kids in.  What show is this on FN?  I didn't stay to watch.  Something called Big Table? or Farm Table?

In Canada, we just got the Cooking Channel. I hate the competition shows infiltrating the Food Network. I am enjoying Unique Sweets, Unique Eats, and Hailey's America. I am a sucker for food travelogue shows. I like Tiffani's show too, but I hate it when the hosts has a fake dinner party. I get embarrassed for everyone involved. 

Basically, I have been watching a lot of food shows lately. When I am in the gym, I will actively change the channel from the news to the food channels. I wonder if it is just me or is this is a trend.

Probably not just you. News generally sucks these days. Escapist channels may be seeing a big bump as we get fatigued from all the outrage

I'm looking forward to this. I miss the old instructional shows they used to show about 5-10 years ago, especially the all-day afternoon lineup of cooking shows. I really don't care for any of the current celebrity-led shows and I'm tired of the prime time lineup being showed 24/7.

It looks like on FN & CC we will see more "chefs" that don't know their arm from their butt.  The only good thing for cooking shows is PBS, but sadly Trump wants to defund PBS.

Last I heard, PBS gets very little funding from the feds (less than 15%), most comes from sponsors and donors. I agree with very little in Trump's proposed budget. I'm mostly concerned about defunding any funds supporting restoring the Chesapeake Bay, that has come such a long way back to good health. Efforts over the last 20 years or more are really making a difference. Planned Parenthood is another tragedy - heaven forbid poor women have access to mammograms and pap smears. At least Maryland has passed a bill to keep funding levels for PP in MD. I think the main outcome from defunding PBS will be more fundraising - poor viewers.

I hope that Cooks vs Cons and Bakers vs Fakers get cancelled solely because I HATE the commercials. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Giada is hard to take serious when she doesn't eat anything. On Food Network Star, they show her putting an empty fork in her mouth, which you are probably not supposed to notice over her cleavage, which I'm also tired of seeing.

She also seems to repeat the things she cooks over the different shows. I rarely watch and yet constantly think, "Did I just see this episode? Nope, says it's new."

At any given time during the year, here is L.A., all 3 of these shows is on PBS in Los Angeles.  (not necessarily at the same time)  I guess we're lucky to have 4 PBS stations airing here!
