S04.E21: Kyle

Recommended Posts

God, the ghosts all literally waiting around to see if Sasappis and Joan had sex...XD. I know their afterlives can get rather boring much of the time, but good lord :p.

I am glad that all went well for Sasappis with his first time, though - the bit with her accidentally being thrown out the window cracked me up, oh, my god. But I love how understanding she was and how she was able to help put him at ease and allow him to be comfortable enough to take that step.

As for the main story, awwwwww, that ending with Sam and Jay! So sweet. I loved that she instantly pulled a "face palm" move when Kyle tried to make a move on her. I totally get her being excited to have someone around who shares her particular power and who can get some of the stuff she has to deal with, but yeah, the fact that she's also lucky enough to have someone like Jay, who's by her side and supports her with all the ghost stuff despite not having that same power, is a large part of what makes things so bearable for her and I'm glad she was able to be reminded of that as she was. I felt for poor Jay, and I can totally sympathize with him feeling a little left out and jealous. But this is why he and Sam are so good together, their ability to talk this stuff out and work out these issues as they do.

Loved that Kyle kept being referred to as "Man Sam" :D. And Isaac wanting a puppy, and the running thing about Hot Pockets, and Hetty's whole horse thing... Absolute dorks, the lot of them XD <3.

Agh, I can't believe next week's the season finale already! Can't wait to see what they've got planned!

My mother is in the room when my roommate and I watch Ghosts, but she herself is not a fan/does not really watch. However, she completely fell apart at Joan’s “fell on a family of woodchucks” line. I mean, cry laughing, we rewound four times before we could move on levels of laughter, lol.

That exchange, and Sass rolling her right off the bed out the side of the house were hilarious.

She didn't go through the window; she actually bounced off the bed and went through the wall.

I laughed so hard at Sas accidentally throwing Joan through the wall. He’s lucky she likes him so much! The last scene with everyone cheering for him was hilarious.

I do feel for Kyle because most people are going to think he’s crazy or lying or just won’t be able to handle being with someone who can see ghosts. But it helped Sam see how rare someone like Jay is and it brought them closer. Sam using Alberta’s facepalm move on Kyle was perfect. Unfortunately for the ghosts, they won’t be able to smell Hot Pockets 24/7 now that he’s gone, though.

I like Joan more and more.  Sass deserved a kind person like that for his first time.  She wouldn't have minded if he were awkward or shy.  I plead guilty, though, to laughing out loud when he accidentally bounced her through the wall.  Face-palming seems to be a recurring theme now: first Isaac, then Alberta, and now Sam.

I sometimes wonder if the writers periodically monitor this forum, because in this episode they dealt with two issues that have been extensively discussed here.  First, why Nancy has open sores when she's a cholera victim.  Second, and more important, that Sam finally realizes how lucky she is to have a husband like Jay and that she doesn't always appreciate that.  But I liked how she loves Jay so much she wasn't even tempted to let Kyle kiss her, even though they'd bonded over their mutual ability to see ghosts.  I completely understood Jay's insecurity, though Bela's unhelpful big mouth made it worse.

This episode also brought home how truly awful it could be to have that ability.  When Kyle admitted that it kept him from keeping a job and forming relationships--well, that kinda got to me.  And the idea of having to cope with prison ghosts (some of whom could once have been pretty terrible livings)--not a pretty thought.  I mean, there's absolutely no way to escape.  Seeing ghosts has been ruining his life.  Although I'd never want anyone to split up Sam and Jay, I did feel a little sorry for Kyle when he made a pass at Sam.  The guy's desperate for someone to understand and accept him.

But because I'm a certain age, I just couldn't get past how much Kyle looks like young David Naughton.

He does, but at certain moments he reminded me of Scott Baio, which is weird because neither of those guys resembles the other.

You left out one other thing the writers addressed: Jay pointing out that some of the ghosts pre-date the house, yet still share the same boundary. Yes, I'm sure the writers are well aware of online comments.

I thought this episode was more sweet than funny, although it certainly had its moments like how Pete kept saying mildly suggestive things about smelling Kyle's meat and I think something else about his sausage? I'll have to go back and watch again.

But yeah, Sam realizing how lucky she was to have Jay was really quite poignant. And the show did a really good job of switching back and forth between her POV and his and how hard this must be for him. I mean they're consistently pretty good about that but they did an especially good job of it in this one. I noted that it was written by show creators/runners Joe & Joe, and those tend to be the strongest episodes.

I missed the first 5 minutes.  Where did Pete find him?  And how did Kyle be able to see ghosts?

In a diner somewhere. Pete was smelling people's food; stuck his face in Kyle's order and Kyle was like, "do you mind?" He tried to get away (assumed Pete wouldn't be able to follow him off the property but was disappointed...). He was able to see ghosts after a head injury from being hit by a bird on a roller coaster. Like Fabio.

I don’t understand how ghosts manage to have sex when they can’t remove any of their clothing or inconvenient accessories like Pete’s arrow or Thor’s shield. Yes, I suppose that it’s possible, but it seems like a less than optimal experience. (This is one area in which Trevor has a distinct advantage) But thank goodness, we don’t have to hear any more 500 year old virgin jokes.
Kyle seemed like a good guy until he made a pass at Sam. But she gave him the ol’ face palm, which is a funny recurring joke.

I thought the Joan and Sass plot was sweet and I was glad to see Nancy again. I was able to see things from both Sam and Jay's POV. Jay is understanding of Sam's ability but he can avoid the ghost's demands and she can't. I hated Hetty calling Sam a freak she's never done that before. He also has a loving family and Sam doesn't. I appreciated her honesty when she said the ghosts were bothering her.

This episode had more laughs than the last few, but the one-and-done Kyle episode didn’t make sense to me. He was going to be a tremendous help to both Sam in dealing with the ghosts, and for the business. It seems the kiss misunderstanding could have been overcome, no? Maybe he’ll come back with a wife?

Realistically this show already has an extremely bloated cast so they can't really add even more people.

He was always going to have a short stint because of this. Maybe if some of the ghosts were sucked off.

They can remove them, but must hold onto them.  They can't put them down.  Ghosts can lick Carol's candy so long as she's holding it; otherwise it reverts to her purse.  I don't see why Trevor wouldn't be able to take off his blazer and tie it around his waist, for example.

The bigger question is how they can get aroused with no blood circulating to their erogenous zones.

Ben Feldman (Kyle) is pretty famous (Mad Men, Superstore.) He's not going to join a huge cast like this unless he's one of the leads.

I remember one of the men saying in an earlier episode that they can't finish.  I'm embarrassed that I remember that!

It would be awkward.  Sam was a bit naive in this department.  I'm glad that it made her realize how much she loves Jay and that she acknowledged it.  Sam never should've hired Kyle without talking to Jay first.  I don't see how they can afford another employee.

Yeah, just hiring him on the spot was a bad move, especially since she didn't bother with a background check.  While he may have turned out to be harmless, he just as easily could have been a conman who made up a sob story about why he was in jail.

Pete said that next they're off to Chicago where Kyle's going to let him "inhale his kielbasa."

I'm with Thor. Cod pockets sound delicious, especially if mixed with a good sauce and veggies.

I thought they were going to introduce Kyle to Bela. But I guess having two people who can see ghosts is "too many cooks" for the premise of the show. The fun is Jay who can't see the ghosts so he's confused, but participate in the joy and sorrow anyway (like how he cheered for Sass in the end like all the others). Maybe Kyle can visit once a year, like Stephanie (I know she lives there but she only appear about once a year).

I agree that it would be difficult for practical reasons (from the writers' viewpoint) to have him around even as a recurring character, though an occasional visit (say, once a year) could be fun.  Honestly, I can't imagine he'd have stayed long anyway.  Being the ghosts' gofer wouldn't be very rewarding and I  doubt it would do much for his self esteem.  As to why Sam let him go, I don't think it was the attempted kiss so much as the fact that, with him around, Jay would feel even more left out than he already does.  To her credit, at that moment, all she really cared about was Jay, and recognized that if Kyle stayed, her marriage might truly become jeopardized.  At least, that was my take on it.

I knew that Kyle couldn't stay long term, but I loved seeing Ben Feldman, he's so much fun and Hetty is totally right about those cheekbones. They are stableboy quality. I like that, while Kyle putting the moves on Sam was not cool, he isn't a bad guy and I could get why he shot his shot with Sam. I could also understand both Sam and Jay too, Sam was excited to be with someone who could understand her unique power, and I get that Jay was hurt at being the third wheel when he already feels left out not being able to see the ghosts.

I really liked this one, Sam really is lucky she has such a great husband, Jay truly has superhuman levels of patience. It was so cute when Jay did the Star Wars line and asked if Pete was there, he would get it.

I was waiting for them to introduce Kyle to Bela, she already knows about ghosts, she thinks he's hot, and we know she enjoys messiness. I would be happy to see Kyle stop by again, maybe when things start going better for him. Prison might be one of the worst places to be when you can see ghosts, even worse than a hospital.

Does this mean we can finally retire the virgin Sass jokes? Please? Joan is a real keeper.

Trevor doesn't have anything better to do so...

I didn't care for this episode at all.  I didn't enjoy Sam being an ass to Jay, who's put up with a lot of shit for the sake of the ghosts, although at least she realized it in the end and apologized to him.  And the less said about Joan, the better.  I hope she's gone soon.

Those were literally the only things I found funny in the entire episode.

Perhaps a future episode will have Bella show up with Kyle for a visit if she friends him online?

Last we heard, Bela was still seeing Eric, although he is off somewhere building houses for Habitat for Humanity. That may be why nobody suggested fixing her up with Kyle.

Sass said it in a very early Season 1 episode. I guess we can assume he was just messing with Sam and Jay. (Jay had asked if ghosts can have sex, Sass said they can but they can't finish and it's very frustrating. Sam walked away and Sass called after her "Sam come back I want to tell Jay about ghost sex.")

Later episodes proved that to be untrue, like Hetty with the washing machine. Maybe the writers originally thought it was a funny concept but eventually abandoned it because it limited various story possibilities.

I'm guessing that Thor told him how sex for male ghosts work.  However, he could've been just messing with Sam & Jay.

Sam's refusal to explain anything to Jay was painfully rude.

It's always bad to be on the outside of any conversation or joke.  For the sake of the show, Sam can't repeat everything verbatim or that would eat into the show's time.  It's probably exhausting for her to repeat everything too, but I agree, it is rude.

If I were a tv show writer I would definitely have an assistant go through forums like these, and relay back useful comments, things that come up repeatedly that might need clarification, inconsistencies, etc.  So I can see this being very possible.

The cholera sores remark came weirdly out of the blue.  Maybe one of the writers just started dating a doctor who was all "that's not what cholera sores look like!  Who did the research on this?"

It was Sass, and it always bugged me when the writers developed this obsession with ghosts hooking up with each other/other people that they'd rewritten their own canon.  But, with the virginity reveal, I guess they got around that in that Sass didn't actually know anything about ghost sex.

I think the writers were trying to make Sam look bad. We know Sam tells Jay about the ghosts how would he know that Trevor isn't wearing pants if she didn't tell him? I thought the ghosts were acting like children around Kyle. I think it would be horrible to see ghosts while in prison they would be gory, and you couldn't escape them. Sam can go to her car if she needs a break from the ghosts.

I thought this was one of the better recent episodes though didn't like feeling worse for Jay then I already do.   It also irritated me when the ghosts were calling both Sam and Kyle servants.  I do wish Sam would stand up to them more sometimes.  When Sam was made at Jay and told him that Kyle "is taking all the ghosts tasks off her plate" - I was like "what would then be left on your plate??"  Like Hetty said they rarely have guests and Sam doesn't appear to help at the restaurant (which is sadly also empty) so......

there were some good laughs though. Not sure why Bella was there but glad she was for Jay and for Kyle's cheekbones :-)

I can't believe this show spent so much time on such an offensively unfunny thing.

I hope the writers & producers got it out of their system!  I wish they'd quit having Flower push the narrative of threesomes.  I didn't care for her comment about wanting to help Sass & Joan: "This isn't something 2 people should do by themselves."  It's almost every single episode that she brings this up.  Please, writers.  Let this go!!  If you're going for shock value, well, it's not shocking!  It's a tired old narrative.  Come up with something original!

Jay hired her a few episodes ago to run the restaurant, but we haven't seen her since.  Maybe they'll explain whether she's there to stay or just visiting.

Working on her novel/writing probably. They have many income streams.
