Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

Greetings from Rotorua!  Hobbiton and the glowworm caves were a lot of fun.  Our tour guide at Hobbiton said he recently completed his PhD -- and the subject was Middle Earth.  After listening to him, I believe him!  Only in New Zealand, y'all.

Instaget FJ for me for Wednesday's game.  3/4 time was the giveaway.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it now!  They don't celebrate it here, but all the TV ads are talking about Black Friday sales.  And there is no turkey to be had.  None that I've found at least.

Can't believe that Kevin didn't get "mote".

Maybe a case of "the burden of knowledge"?
Like Buzzy described:

In “the biz” we call this the “burden of knowledge” - when you know a lot about a subject and miss obvious answers cause you have to sift through so much. It is my excuse for doing poorly in pop music questions!

And there are translations that are close to the KJV (like the NKJV) and Kevin might not have wanted to open up his church to ridicule because of his having gotten it slightly wrong on national TV.

The Frost clue was a missed DD in DJ last night.  I was referring to Monday's FJ.

Ah well, that's what happens when I don't read the forum every day, I confuse the clues. Sorry about that. :)

I was depressed that nobody thought of placenta. I know that the degree of ignorance about this area is EXTREMELY HIGH, but I thought J! folks were the information elites.

And, you'd think a woman (with kids) would figure that one out. I mean, the "Chorionic villi" threw me off for a moment (not great on biology), but nutrients and temporary organ got me there. But we all have moments when we blank out on something we know. Not sure how I'd do under the pressure of performing live. On my couch, though, I'm a winner. 😁

Same. But I felt dumb when Ken pointed out the the clue…

  • Its 15 official state songs include 2 that mention moonshine & 3 played in 3/4 time

…was a reference to The Tennessee Waltz.

Moonshine had me between those two states, and then I got to 3/4 time and was thinking "which one has a waltz?"...also my brain was a little distracted by "fifteen official state songs?!"

Here I go again with the looks-like comment: does anyone else keep waiting for the current champ to sound like Oliver Platt when he speaks? There's a resemblance imo, especially around the mouth. I watch Chicago Med sometimes, mostly for Oliver. Ok, and some of the hot young doctors too ;-)

Thank you! I was about to write a comment about how he reminded me of someone and I couldn't figure out who!

Maybe his church doesn't use the KJV? Different translations phrase it differently (I googled and found that the Episcopal church "authorizes the use of" multiple versions). I looked up a few different ones on Bible Gateway - The New International Version says "speck of sawdust"; Revised Standard Version (which is the one I have, given to all third graders in my Methodist church when I was a kid) uses just "speck."

I wasn't too surprised at this one, I know it's translated differently in other versions and trying to remember which was the KJV might take a bit, also, -and this is a personal problem-, whenever they tell me how many letters an answer is supposed to have I get flustered. I think I've mentioned before that my brain sees the number but refuses to see what the number is supposed to go with, so I'm constantly saying four syllable words instead of 4 letters and the other way around too. I actually groaned at the category 4 Syllable Words 'cause I knew I'd mess it up!.

The one I was surprised at was 'Breath of Life' because it just seemed a logical end to the sentence.

I only got it because of a sci fi book I read ages and ages ago "A Mote in God's Eye." (Niven and Pournelle) It was published (just checked) in 1974, but I read a few years later. Come to think of it, I'd like to read it again and see how it's aged. Welp, just bought it for Kindle (it wasn't in my local library's ebook catalog).

I got it because I used to read an atheist blog and some commenters liked to throw that quote back at certain hypocritical "Christian" trolls, or use it when the story was about some hypocrisy like finding out a church leader was caught doing something in private that they were known to rail against in public.

I hereby unofficially nominate Kevin to be a Second Chancer on the basis of everything about him.

FJ seemed like a Thanksgiving gift to the audience, whether or not in a food coma.

I got a lot of TSs no doubt because I had already awakened from said food coma's nap (brought on by just 2 slivers of take-home pie courtesy of my son-in-law), including:

  • lily pads, the evil eye, junk DNA, Alaska, Lost
    the Yellow Sea, Demonology
(for the Zip code TS, I guessed 123123)

And DD:

  • hot air balloons

ETA: the suitably slender pie slices from my son-in-law were not made of lily pads, evil eyes, junk DNA, or any of the other above mentioned TSs.
They were pumpkin and chocolate cream.

November 28 🍗:

73% / 47% / 61%

Decent first round, terrible second. In J I ran 3-Word Phrases, missed one in How Conventional, Sports, and Turkey, two in Zip Codes, and three in Life Science (how did I do better in sports than science..?). In DJ I missed two in Building, Smoke Show, and -Ology, three in Geography and Project, and four in Asian Literature.

FJ was an instaget.

TSes: (J had 7 + the DD; DJ had 5) I got junk DNA, hot air balloon (DD), batting a thousand, evil eye, Alaska (after Hawaii was wrong), Lost, and "what's-his-name who wrote The Martian".

Happy Thanksgiving! Was at my parents' for unofficial Thanksgiving dinner (we had roast chicken and there was no dessert). The real thing is at my uncle's but they're doing it Saturday this year because both of their kids are at their respective in-laws' this year. My aunt and uncle came also (they were actually planning to go out for Chinese until my mom invited them). Got home a little bit ago and watched on youtube. Almost forgot it was a J! night until I read the beginning of Shapeshifter's comment and realized that Kevin must have lost.

Still in Rotorua, but still checking the archive for now.  Almost instaget FJ for me for Thursday's game.  I had to read the clue twice to make sure I was reading it correctly.  Fun fact:  I have never been to that establishment.  And I have no plans of ever going to that establishment, assuming they still exist.

My local station seems to have pre-empted today's show, unless there just isn't one for some reason? I thought if they aired on Thanksgiving, surely they'd air the day after.

I see they've put Wheel in the middle of the night, but I can't find J! anywhere.

Grumble, grumble....

If it helps any, Andy at TheJeopardyFan! has a link to Matt's comprehensive list of preemptions, reschedulings, etc.

Hopefully you'll find better news than I did - my station is prempting and not airing tonight's (Friday's) episode at all.  And my usual go-to (YouTube) is not turning up any recording of today's show.  Maybe it'll turn up tomorrow, but I'll be on the road, and those recording don't tend to stay up too long.

Had to play the archive, stupid football. And the two youtube videos I found were actually yesterday's game (there was another one tagged as "upcoming" that wasn't going to play until after 8:00 and I wasn't going to wait for that). Did pretty well in the first round, not so much in the second.

In J I ran Books for Younger Readers and Antiques & Collectibles, missed one in Caught Snacking, Billboard Hot 100, and 8-Letter Words, and three in "Land" Ho! In DJ I missed one in Such a "Fox" and Role, two in A Couple of Things About Them, Sheik, and Rattle, and four in American History.

Did not get FJ (have seen Casablanca but it was a long time ago).

TSes: (J had 5; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got Blueberries (for Sal), 78 RPM, goldfish crackers, mainmast, flying fox, Dubai, and lithosphere.

Thanks for this. It confirms that there is not going to be an airing in my region. Why do Wheel people get their show and we don't? Phooey!

I will look at the archive, but it's not the same.

Me, during FJ: Oh, of course the movie is Casablanca *pictures the airport scene*

Random neurons firing in my brain: Casablanca=We'll always have Paris

Me: The answer is Paris!

And then of course once the answer of Lisbon is revealed...obviously they aren't trying to get to Paris, they are trying to escape the war!

I did seem to have enough neurons firing properly to realize that they were not looking for the movie title or departure city. Not that it helped me overall.

I had pretty much the same thought process, and even the same answer!

I sort of paid attention to the other clues as I was perusing the archive, and I got a couple, including goldfish crackers, blueberries, mainmast, flying fox, lithosphere,   and Virginia (I'd have to move if I missed that one).

Of course I got Hobbiton -- it's so cool, y'all.

So those of us in NY just don’t get Jeopardy today?

Thanks SoMuchTV for posting that link. Where I live in NY, J! was not listed on the TV grid, but it was on that list as running in the overnight. So, based on how long football ran, I set the DVR for a couple of infomercials in the wee hours, and bagged J! Both Wheel and J! aired eventually, with J! finally appearing after 3 a.m. But I got it!

I didn't watch Thursday or Friday's episodes, and only checked FJ on the archive -- no idea for Thursday's (Chuck E. Cheese), but Friday's (Lisbon) was almost an instaget -- I immediately knew it was wherever they were headed to at the end of Casablanca, but it took me a moment to come up with that city.

I knew that was what they wanted but I drew a total blank. Were Victor and Ilsa going to stay in Europe or were they headed for America?

I'll be watching football tonight, so checked the archive while eating lunch.  Thankfully, I generally didn't need to be able to see the pictures.

I missed three in chapters, but otherwise had a good first round; I ran anagrams and Florida (giving myself credit for Faye Dunaway, although I wonder if it was a very old picture that none of them recognized her [Pamela Anderson?!]), got all but Bonaire in Caribbean and all but Mr. Olympia in beer, and missed two in records.

I missed three in opera, which was about as much as I could have hoped for, and another three in movies, which was a bummer.  If not for those, I'd have had a great DJ; I ran moons and verbs and got all but Moton in fields and all but The Pennsylvania Gazette in America.

I had absolutely no idea for FJ, though.

Terrible game...I got out of work late, found a youtube video that turned out to be not that great (it froze a few times and skipped a bunch of clues in the first round, so I had to catch up in the archive; the second round was fine but after the game ended it started over and played a few minutes of the first round again before switching to a guy holding a black kitten (admittedly, it was a cute kitten, but still, kinda weird)…

In J I ran That Chapter's Named for Me, missed one in Caribbean, two in Florida Woman, three in Sports Star Records (saved only by somehow knowing that Manny Pacquiao is a boxer/Philippines politician and recognizing John McEnroe in the picture), and four in Beer and Anagrammed Occupations. In DJ I only did marginally better - missed one in America Before the Revolution, Moons of the Solar System, and Add Verbs, two in Fields, three in Opera, and four in Geographic Movie Titles. Had no clue for FJ.

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 6) The only one I got was Massachusetts but it was before Evan answered and was later ruled wrong, at least..

I also had no idea for FJ. (I'm still in Auckland today.)  I don't think I knew that was a poetic character -- I've always heard it as a story, not a poem.

I took a taxi today that was a Tesla.  The driver had to help me figure out how to open the door.  And we both had a good laugh about it, too.  It wasn't very comfortable in the back seat.

From the opening narration of Casablanca:

"Here, the fortunate ones through money, or influence, or luck, might obtain exit visas and scurry to Lisbon; and from Lisbon, to the New World. But the others wait in Casablanca... and wait... and wait... and wait."

We started watching that first one too, but then we found another one that was fine. The names of the people posting change all the time. These were, I think, Thai guys, and after Jeopardy the video showed one guy just looking blankly at his computer (?), scratching his ear, and so forth. Kind of funny, but at least the recording was good. We really like the recordings of some Arabic speakers, the end would be a demonstration of the woman showing how to decorate or prepare a pretty platter of snacks for a party. They haven't shown up lately. :(

OMG, that was amazing. I came to love Evan by the end, loud voice and all.

For FJ I came up with Rip Van Winkle - though I was pretty sure it wasn't a poem, and didn't think the date was right. Apparently, though I did a show about the Pied Piper when I was in junior high, his clothes weren't mentioned, and his outfit didn't come to mind.

I thought the outfit was why he was "Pied."

I got FJ right but it was definitely a guess - just couldn't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

BTW, I never did find a recording of Friday's game, preempted by some football game.  Finally just played it off the archive.

Yes but, all the clue gave us was 'quaint attire'. Nothing about that suggests 'pied'. It was Ken that said the character was dressed in an odd multicolored way. Other than that you got an 1842 poem about a legendary character. I did not get it, though the Van Johnson movie version was played every Thanksgiving, I think, when I was young. I think this was the least helpful clue I've seen in a while.

My mind went to Pierrot based on the quaint outfit.  So I guess my best hope would have been to run out of time after writing PIE.
