You might want to check the J Archive since there were 16 TSs/missed DDs today.

And the idea of Agatha Christie as a surfer 🏄‍♂️ kinda blows my mind, although in my head I'm visualizing Miss Marple hanging ten.

I (with my 0/4 record so far this week in FJ) was really surprised at both the dd misses by the champ in double jeopardy. They seemed so obvious to me!

And when the contestant buzzed in with Agatha Christie, I thought, what a bizarre wild guessWhy would she make a guess like that?

Not sure what the moral of that story is. Sometimes you know ’em, sometimes you don’t?

I guessed Agatha Christie too, based on "Elusive Woman", "mystery writer" and "born a proper Victorian". The Elusive Woman part made me remember hearing the story of her disappearance after her mother's death and the discovery of her husband's infidelity. The only thing that made me question my response was the "one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong" avid surfer part of the clue. Plus when I think of surfing my mind goes to the Beach Boys/Gidget timeframe, not the earlier part of the 20th century.

I'm only 1 for 4 in FJ this week - Hawaii 5-0. Should be 2 for 4 - should have gotten Monday's right, but while Santa Fe was an instaget, it took me too long to reject Boise and then decide between Cheyenne or Helena before the end of the think music.

An okay game for me.

I got the ts's or missed DDs of Martha Mitchell, lady of the lake, boater, sour grapes, leopard, celery, kaiser Wilhelm, and buttery.

I said Suleiman for FJ.  I was about three centuries late but the first and last letters are the same so I figure that is at least close.  Don't know why contestants would think either Virgil or Ghengis Khan were Kurdish.

I am 0/4 this week so tonight is do or die FJ.

Saladin rhymes with Paladin

Not the way Ken pronounced it!  He said something like "Salla-DEEN," which is probably closer to the way the man himself would have pronounced his name (Salah al-Din), but not the way it's usually been said in the west.

I got it right, by the way, largely because I had watched Terry Jones's TV documentary about the Crusades some years ago (yes, that Terry Jones, the Monty Python guy), and have been fascinated by Saladin since then.  Despite being Muslim, he was kind of appealing to medieval Christians as something of a model of courage and chivalry, which would explain why Dante would mention him in The Divine Comedy.

I should've gotten Saladin but did not.  I said Tamerlane despite being certain it was wrong.

I only ran two categories: Spot The Mammal and Ready To Wear.  I got all but one clue in Historic Wives (couldn't remember Martha Mitchell's name), TV Drama, Where The "H" Is That?, A Fine Wine Film, Tanks For The Memories (I said panther instead of leopard), Produce: We Have Names (didn't hear the category title and thus thought campari was the liqueur, not the tomato) and Recent Literary Biography (I missed Jean Rhys despite owning Wide Sargasso Sea in both book and film form).  The only category I completely blew was 4-Letter Before & After, where I only got PVCR.

I did get several stumpers, though: the Lady of the Lake, boater, Heliopolis, Russell Crowe, Kaiser Wilhelm (I left off Kaiser and said Wilhelm II, which is the correct one), buttery, celery, The Waste Land (come on, guys, if it's T.S. Eliot, it's always The Waste Land) and Keats.

Aside from Jesse's confusion over "this sword" vs "this sword[-]giver" I think they could have tightened up the wording to make it clearer what they were after.

I didn't think it needed to be changed at all.  To me it was perfectly clear that they were looking for the Lady of the Lake.  Although I do wonder if they'd have accepted "some watery tart who threw a sword at King Arthur".  After all, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

I had no idea that Agatha Christie could surf, but that's damned cool.

For me, it was female mystery writer born in the Victorian period?  That's always Agatha Christie.

I saw that too, which is partly why I should've gotten FJ.  Also, the subject of my final paper for The High Middle Ages in college was related to the 3rd Crusade and the fall of Jerusalem.  Oh, well.

And Nimue was in the clue. It would probably be weird to respond that Nimue became Vivian since they are just alternate versions of the legend. Aside from Jesse's confusion over "this sword" vs "this sword[-]giver" I think they could have tightened up the wording to make it clearer what they were after. (Or gone in a different direction to have Excalibur or King Arthur as the response.)

I thought the clue was pretty clearly worded - but then I got it, so I'm biased. 😉

I ran Ready To Wear, almost ran Fine Wine Film (which shocked me),Tanks and Produce. I didn't wrap my mind around mammals quickly enough (I didn't hear the category). I did okay in others, terrible in a couple of them. So, a pretty good game for me, all in all.

FJ eluded me. I only recognize the name of Saladin, otherwise I know pretty much nothing about him.

IMDB is not helping me here. I remember watching a British TV series in the previous century that had Saladin and Richard I and I can't find it. I thought maybe Ivanhoe but apparently not. And I thought I knew who played Saladin in it but, again, apparently not. Stupid memory.

Was it a drama, or a comedy? Black Adder sounds like the kind of show that would have those characters (um, historic figures)

Possibly it was a version of Robin Hood. I know there were several tv shows about Robin Hood and Richard I was the king at the time even if King John was taking over for him while Richard fought in the crusades.

It wasn't Doctor Who, was it?  I mean old-school, black-and-white, OG Doctor Who from 1965.  They did a 4-part story about the Third Crusade, with Julian Glover as Richard and Bernard Kay as Saladin.

Ah, Julian Glover. He really got around. The actor I remember being in it is Patrick Ryecart, that's why I think it was probably The Talisman and I was wrong about which Muslim leader was there.

But now I want to find the DW story.

They’re showing it at 3:35am

TS: William Holden, behemoth, Cowardly Lion (missed DD), Out of Africa, Androcles. And FJ, of course. I mean "lit a third lantern" means there are already two lanterns associated with the landmark! How could no one come up with "Old North Church"?

And on the bad news front....Mayim is back on Monday.

I'll be watching the draft again tonight, so another archive game for me.

Holy TS, Batman!  I'm surprised Babe Ruth was one of them.  Even if none of them knew it was him, for a $200 clue about a record-holding Yankee of a past era, someone guess Babe Ruth, given how often they ask about him on J!

I missed three in Job (imagine my displeasure when I realized that was Job, the biblical character, not job the work).  If not for that category, I'd have had a great first round -- I got all but one in GOATs (the Sweden TS) and ran everything else.

In DJ, animated was my disaster category (just as unsurprising as me blowing a Bible category) -- I only came up with Madagascar.  Unlike the first round, that was sadly not my only one; I missed another three in lions.  I ran body and German, though, and got all but one in 3-digit years and "G".

I did not come up with FJ, as "The 'one if by land, two if by sea' church" would not be accepted.  I even saw it on one of my trips to Boston, but apparently didn't file the name away in my brain.  Frustrating -- it was an insta-I know what they're looking for, but I never could come up with the name of the church.

What is going on with all the TSs/missed DDs lately? There were 14 on Wednesday, 16 yesterday and a whopping 18 today. And there were 2 TS FJs as well with only 1 correct response for the 3rd.

O.k. game today - got 18 correct in each round. Probably should have had a few more, but oh well. Ran Kuwait For Me! and got 4 right in "Hold" Up, A Real Body Busy and It's German For... Unfortunately I had 3 categories with only 2 correct and only 1 correct in another - just like Bastet I only got Madagascar.

Got the TSs of Tevye, William Holden (I feel old), the martyrs, Ostrogoths, pituitary, cowardly lion (DD), Out of Africa and Androcles.

And FJ was an instaget for me - a good way to end the week.

So long Ken - I'll miss you. But based on the commercials it looks like he's hosting the Masters Tournament, so yay!

I knew that one even without being able to see the picture.  But he hasn't remained as well known as some other actors from that era.  (Especially if the contestants were all on the younger side.)

A decent game for me.  I got the ts's or missed dd's of Babe Ruth, William Holden, Yucatan, and Androcles.

I finally got a Final Jeopardy this week so not skunked.  The Old North Church is the only landmark I could think of with lanterns associated with it so I figured that was it.

I liked Eric and Katherine better than Kevin but he is okay too.

I said Old north Church at the last second, but can't say I was overly confident.

I got the missed clues of Babe Ruth, William Holden, martyrs, Cowardly Lion, out of Africa, ostrogoths, and pituitary.

I got the entire category of Kuwait right.

FJ was an instaget, the one time I visited Boston we could not get in as it was closed, I forget if it was undergoing repairs or it was just too early in the season? I know the USS Constitution was undergoing repairs but they let us on anyway among the plastic coverings.

TSs were William Holden, Sweden, B O O T, Out of Africa, Yucatan and Androcles. And the missed DD of the Cowardly Lion.

April 28:

70% / 73% / 72%

Decent game (best game of the week, too). In J! I ran Cookbooks and Kuwait, missed one in Inside Job and Hold Up, two in Discontinued Cars, and totally failed Sports (unsurprisingly). In DJ I ran A Real Body Busy, missed one in 3-Digit Years, Animated Entertainment, and Literary Lions, two in German, and three in "G" as in Global.

FJ was an instaget, my only one of the week, and an asterisk!

TSes were William Holden, Forks over Knives, martyrs, behemoth, Cowardly Lion (DD), Out of Africa, Cairo, Ostrogoths, pituitary gland, spleen, and Yeats (which was a total guess!).

I found the peachy blocks on Eric's sweater distracting. I like the new champ. I'll admit I was not expecting his story to be about being a drag queen. Given that knowledge, I'm kind of amused that his last name is Belle. (Here's his instagram, if you're curious about that fabulous red hair he mentioned.)

Never heard of Saladin.  Looked him up in Wikipedia and realized I just don’t care.

I listen to a history podcast from the BBC called You're Dead to Me; they had an episode on Saladin not super long ago. I still didn't get it.

I'm in the NYC metro area, too; I watched this video on youtube. It actually had the whole game and didn't glitch or skip clues or do some weird zooming in and out during FJ like a lot of the ones I've tried lately have done. The audio and video weren't quite synced up but I can deal with that.

Augh!  The local affiliate cut to commercial just after Katherine missed pituitary!  I had to look at the archive for the last few clues.  The show came back just in time to hear Ken read the clue for FJ.  I was glad he reiterated the category.  FJ was an instaget for me, and I'm gobsmacked that none of the contestants knew it.  Plymouth Rock was an interesting guess.

I also got the TS of Babe Ruth, William Holden, martyrs, Out of Africa, and pituitary.

I haaaaaated Eric's outfit.

I love You're Dead to Me! So many interesting events and people new to me. It almost fills the hole left by Drunk History in that way.

Sad that no one knew William Holden.

I came in on the middle of Kevin’s interview.  Is he involved with the drag world?  Miss Information made me LOL.

Yes-- he said he hosts drag trivia night over Zoom, under the name Whiskey Ginger. He also said he thought J! has a very talented make up staff and Ken floated his own possible drag name, which I found delightful, but now I can't remember what he said it would be.

I love "Network" (the movie).  I got William Holden and was sad that it was a TS. That is a movie everyone should see!!!

Della Double.

I was rooting for Kevin as soon as I learned he is a drag queen. I love drag, and given everything those in the drag community are facing these days, it was nice to see one of them pull off a win. Is it too much to hope that he wears the red wig next time?

Catching up on a few days of games… so many TSs! Just today, I got seven of them. These people are making me feel way too smart. I was also surprised at the TS FJs for Tuesday and Wednesday (both of which were instagets for me). I guess it’s only easy if you know it.

that's when the light bulb went on that it was a Warner Bros. film.  And I knew there were four of them, so that was definitely it.  That was fun; I love a good instaget, of course, but I also enjoy when I successfully reason my way to a correct FJ response.

I completely agree. There are few things more satisfying to me than figuring out a good FJ puzzle.

Check out PlutoTV. They've got a channel dedicated to "classic" Doctor Who.

Classic Doctor Who is also on BritBox, if you happen to subscribe to that service.  "The Crusade" story, however, is one with missing episodes, so it may not be available anywhere.  Out of four episodes, only two still seem to exist.  A lot of old Doctor Who is like that.

For some reason, three different classes I took in college had it on the syllabus. By the third time, I liked it. But it took me that long. Now that I'm older (much) I really like it.

I ran Job - I was shocked! I nearly ran Car - another shocker as I generally pay no attention to cars. Also nearly ran German - if it had been anything but philosophy, I'd have gotten it.

I got Yeats, Out of Africa, Tevye, Behemoth, Babe Ruth, Martyr, and pituitary.

I have a bone to pick with "Yes, Sir" - jawohl means "yes." If that's the answer they were going for, they should have just used "Yes."

Yes, Sir would be something like: Jawohl Mein Herr, or Jawohl Mein Kommandant (re Hogan's Heroes) . "Sir" shouldn't have been in the clue.  It caused too much confusion imo.

The only problem I had with FJ was the name of the church - but I changed it in time. I was pretty suprised the mister didn't get it, or at least get the reference. It seemed pretty clear to me. Then again, I'm reading the Revolution portion of the Outlander books.
