I follow several former bakers and they often get together with bakers from their seasons 1:1 and as a group. Hell, Matty had all of the bakers from his season at his wedding. I love both of them, but do not understand why every male/female interaction has to have an are they/aren't they spin. Didn't the media do it with Chigs and Lottie too? Its a bit of a sore spot with me for reasons, but still. Either speculate for everyone when they catch up, regardless of gender, or just leave it alone. For me, I hate the stress of the unknown for the most part. And I'm rarely disappointed in the winner here, especially since it's not a cumulative award. A baker who is second to last throughout the competition can pull off a banger in their last episode and win--so be it. I think I've only been unhappy once or twice. But like I said, that's just me. Mittengirl December 12 Share December 12 I was rather suspicious of some of the bakes that the celebrities presented. First they are saying they have never baked before, then they present a decently baked and nicely decorated cake. I couldn’t help but think that they had gotten some off-camera help. There were some bad bakes, but not the huge failures there should have been from self-proclaimed non-bakers who are working under a time constraint. I suspect that the last celebrity one was a turning point. The ones that were the cast of this or that show were kinda fun in that they had chemistry with one another and you got to see people who work together ribbing one another and being silly together. The one that was just four different TV talking heads was missing out in even that level of interest. Just four very polished and professionally uninteresting* people being very polished and uninteresting. *as in, their job is to be less interesting than the person they're interviewing. My only thing Hide contents I wish they would not bring back former winners as I like seeing other people get to a chance to win. I would love to know how they choose who to invite. Does the company make a list and start asking? Do past contestants volunteer and the company picks from that group? Some combination? Spoiler I was in the middle of cooking when I finished this season and Netflix started autoplaying Sophie's season, one of my favorites. And then I got curious about what this woman who had been training to be a stunt double had done with herself after winning bake off, so I looked her up. There were a lot of interviews from when the holiday ep aired in which she wistfully said that she really hadn't known how to capitalize on her win, had missed the windows of opportunity. I suspect that this was a way of trying to get back into that windows for a bit, especially since her current work is baking very fancy cakes. I think I said elsewhere (in different words) how jarring it was to me to see her go from... Well... Soft butch badass to very made-up facade. It felt to me like this was a really "I need this" thing for her to be able to use professionally. And I have some empathy for that. She was at such a crossroads when she was on (just out of the army, iirc) and I'm sure it was overwhelming. Plenty of the other folks who come on seem to have a whole social media rollout ready to build on a possible win. She... Did not. She just came on and baked. I'm totally not meaning to give some kind of well ackshully response to your post - which I very much agree with! It's more that I'm fascinated at the ephemerality of winning bake off and the way that some of the contestants feel like these sleek proto-influencers who are ready for their spotlight, ready to hit the ground running, and how others just think it might be cool to bake on the telly and don't really seem to have thought about what might come after. (plenty of space in between, too, obvs!) 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/12562-gbbo-in-the-media/page/20/#findComment-8531621
RoxiP December 13 Share December 13 I don't know that I would have recognized Sophie except of course I knew who she was - but she was certainly a lot more polished (the woman has amazing hair). One of the assets that she possessed then and now is that she just doesn't get frazzled but keeps her head down and keeps working. Won't spoil for those who haven't seen it yet but the person who won the New Year's show was one of my favorites. Some of the returning contestants I was happy with but a few were question marks for me - especially one. I will say that her baking skills seem majorly improved since her first GBBO appearance. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/12562-gbbo-in-the-media/page/20/#findComment-8531963
