SNL Classic: Re-Airings, Past Casts, Past Sketches, Past Hosts, the Past

Yeah, a lot of the lyrics were hard to pick up, but fortunately they're available on the 'net.  Lots of great lines, but I think my favorite part is:

Quote

Mccain/Palin, gonna put the nail in the coffin
Of the media elite
(she likes red meat)
Shoot a mother-humpin' moose, eight days of the week

That's some sly rhymin'!

Also, I don't think Palin came off as "normal" in this sequence.  More like totally clueless.

Tonight: Lin Manuel Miranda from last year.  What could have been.  Though with his tweets about Puerto Rico now, he's in beast mode 52 weeks later.

I've only now recovered enough to star rewatching the election skits. They're still funny, but the residual bitterness is still there, and that was apparent with the Cold Opening about the Access Hollywood tape...

I wish they had honored Hader with at least one, he was always so brilliant.

If and when he hosts again, I would say he'd be a prime contender for one. Look how long it took Amy to get an Emmy.

He did other characters more, but Vincent Price was always my favorite.

I saw this one was scheduled to record on my DVR, and I turned the record function off.  I remembered the show being a letdown and wondering why they gave her the Christmas episode that year.  I totally agree there's nothing particularly vintage about it.

I miss when they told you what was memorable and considered vintage about the episode (i.e. Belushi and Aykroyd premiered The Blues Brothers, for example).

The only part I really liked of the Amy Adams episode was the Serial parody, but unfortunately, that's one of those bits that won't last the test of time (I still love it, but if you missed Serial, you'd be really in the dark)

I liked it - Cecily captured that blase vocal fry of public radio on-air talent - but it went on a bit too long. And yeah, it's old already.

Tonight's rerun is The Rock's 2015 stint.

-During his singing monologue of being Franchise Viagra, a throwaway line about being "The Next President" suddenly takes on a more important meaning.  #JohnsonHanks2020

-The Bambi movie would probably not happen given his current issues with his Fast and Furious "family."

-The WWE still makes me cry from laughing so hard.

So ex cast member Brooks Wheelen is on stand up circut now and he was at our local comedy club last weekend for shows and.......he either has substance issues or is a complete douchebag...not sure which.  I didn't see his act, but he was on radio 2 days and on tv one day and wasnt even close to being funny and kinda a dick. I see why he was axed from SNL.

Usually there's a rhyme or reason with the choosing of the vintage episodes, no? Maybe because it was a year since Trump's inauguration this week. I think Will Ferrell's first episode (Mariel Hemingway/Blues Traveler) would have been a more inspired choice.

We'll probably get the Tom Brady episode for next week, but it's one of the more enjoyable "athlete host" episodes.

Tonight's so-called "classic" or "vintage" episode (at 10:00 p.m. ET) is from freaking 2016. Really? I can't recall the last time a truly vintage episode aired. Probably afraid to since it makes the current stuff look bad.

I would think that the more recent reruns are even worse than that as far as making things look bad since you have sharper writing, and then edit out the weakest bits so you have a better show doing riffs on a lot of the same material with a lot of the same cast members so it's a direct comparison and you can't just say that the cast was better or it was easier to be funny before recent events or whatever else a viewer might think.

Maybe or they might show some episode from last season. You would think with Will Ferrell hosting it would be fairly easy to find a good show from his time there. It's not like it's so long ago to be excessively dated or that they don't have a lot to choose from. At this rate we might have to start hoping that former hosts, bug time musical guests, or cast members from before 2015 start dying to actually get something that is actually vintage.

I think this week there actually isn't an "SNL Vintage" episode, because at 8 PM they're running a "SNL Best of Football" special (which I'm sure will include some sketches from Brady's episode).

Too bad, as I would have liked to have seen Natalie Portman's episode from 2006 before her new one. I really can't remember anything about it other than the "Natalie Raps" digital short.

I remember the sketch where she was the daughter of the trendy Dutch couple played by Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph, "Nuni".

She also did a wicked impression of ice skater Sasha Coehn on Update.

The one I didn't like was where she played an overly cheerful Jamba Juice cashier. I get that the writer of the sketch was probably annoyed whenever he went into a Jamba Juice by the employees but having someone who's been in movies since she was a child making fun of people earning minimum wage seemed mean.  I thought "WTF bitch, you're a millionaire!"

I've been watching some eps from around 2003-ish as I missed most of 2000-2010 or so. They're pretty awful. Jimmy Fallon's recurring skit in the dorm room with Horatio Sanz is terrible. Fred Armisen is even worse. I remember reading people complain about him and I didn't get it. I do now. The drummer with the 'adios mio!' tagline or whatever it is, and the aging drummer in the las vegas skits where he hits the drums on the wrong note are just terrible. I can't bear watching the 'adios mio' one. Nails on a chalkboard.  It does remind me a little of Kyle(?)s routine with the bad comic, but Kyle's is not so excruciating.

On the other hand, Tina and Amy are always pretty good, and I don;t mind Maya Rudolph. Will Forte also has moments I like. Also Chris Parnell will always be Dr. Spaceman to me.

"Jarrett's Room" was okay but it felt like they did it EVERY episode. The only one I even remember is when they make fun of names in the yearbook and one of them is Jill Butt (Rachel Dratch) and at the end she shows up as their roommate's date and says "Hi, I'm Jill Butt". And, yes, I still giggle when I think of it because I was in middle school when it aired and apparently still am.
