Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

I don't know about Cyrus being the killer. His religious conversion is supposed to be legit. "Thou shalt not kill" is a pretty big commandment to break.

How does killing Sam give Laura her family back? The success of the transplant has nothing to do with whether Sam lives or dies afterward.

There are other ways to write Cyrus off the show that would make more sense to me. Have him go on a mission or something. Or just don't write for him. He's such a sporadic presence anyway.

I agree. But how many times have we seen them set up potentially good storylines only to see them fizzle out and wrapped up stupidly? If they wrapped them up at all.

I'm willing to be convinced, really. 🙂 But they don't have a great track record.

I so very much want someone to tell Lulu "You look so different without the crown of Christmas lights on your head."

I clearly missed something when I was on the barge.

When Lulu first went into her coma the doctors put some sort of helmut-looking thing on her head to...do something (read her brain waves?  I don't remember) and it had different colored lights on it that resembled Christmas lights.  It was a sight!

I can’t get excited about NuLulu and Bad Hair Lucky or the Molly/Kristina feud and for personal reasons, I’m still protecting myself from the funeral, so I’m skipping a lot.

Watched a bit of Danny/Jason today and look forward to seeing more but I wish there was some fun scenes during the saddest and darkest month of the year.

I want to thank the community here for its willingness to politely hear different points of views, I’ve had my fill of being downvoted on another platform and thinking of leaving another completely different online community as well.

So Lulu wakes up after 4 yrs in a coma, immediately moves her hand up to her face, and then removes the bandage from her side. Also moves her legs. And when the bandage is removed, she just has a faint scare but no stitches? I suppose at least she didn’t get up and dance a jig, but come on!

and did Cyrus actually show the doctors paperwork saying that he was the family spokesperson and/or authorized to receive medical updates? Cause you know, I’m fairly certain that Laura would NOT approve. And why isn’t she sitting by her daughter’s bedside demanding willing her to regain consciousness?

danny/Jason scenes were good but how pathetic that Jason needs to be told by his teenage son that his actions have consequences far beyond the immediate?

Lulu wakes up from a 3+ years coma and is able to recognize the voice of Cyrus and recall an encouter she had with him many years ago. Wow, I can't even remember what was said at my morning meeting! And, oh, it looks like the coma has reset her to spitfire Lulu cause she is gonna get out that bed and take care of business! I guess they are not even going to pretend to try for any kind of realistic scenario here. I mean, at least Curtis was paralyzed for a whole week.

Why does Sidwell succeed in killing Sam when he utterly failed at ridding us of Sah-sha and Holly?

Because he is the NuCyrus/Peter/Shiloh/Victor. It's the same old storyline this creative team keeps doing. Next he will turn out to be Natalia's ex and hang around for years moping about losing her love and wanting to reconnect with their kids while the audience wonders why no one has murked this guy for Sam yet (a la Cyrus and the bombing that took out Lulu).

I agree that Cyrus is a red herring. It does seem likely connected to Lulu's ventilator malfunction, so that could be a Sidwell thing I guess.

Maybe it's just some kind of anti-vivisectionist zealot who doesn't believe in organ transplants.

Anyway I'll get to more of today's show later, but upon further review of yesterday:

  • That was not Kelly's most flattering photo up on the dais in the church. The side eye it gave all Sam's former rivals at the pulpit at least screamed 'still hate you bitches!' Carly should not have been up there with that same old cliche line of hers though, no matter how matured their relationship became after Jason's first death in '12; Sam still had smoke for Carly as recently as a few months ago, and they spent the bulk of the last two decades trying to beat each other's ass.
  • Legit thought Kristina was going to get up at the pulpit and start talking about the damn baby BTW. "Not all of you attended My Daughter’s funeral, so I feel it’s actually appropriate to circle back! Some People [death stare at Molly] and the fake news would tell you my daughter was not named Adella, but here before God we know the truth, just like Sam did!" Thank God for some restraint.
  • I am glad they had Lucky up there talking about Sam, since this is the first time I can recall the show ever acknowledging they had a relationship of any kind since Jonathan returned to the role. Even here they don't explicitly mention Lucky and Sam were romantically involved though. JJ's reaction shot in the back during Liz's speech was like "Did I fuck her? 🤔"
  • Rocco's blue suit was a ilttle too fly for a funeral, but that kid did do a great job again. I will grudgingly allow that Asher Whateverhisname was very emotional in the pews and various reaction shots, more than I've ever seen him be but he still was far too contained at the pulpit itself IMO. I am annoyed Michael didn't speak and annoyed at how disengaged Chad was way in the back. Sam helped raise that little shit in the Dylan Cash years and onward.
  • Nice montage at the end (minus Sonny/Sam) but BITD in the pre-FV years they would've let the silence with NLG alone in the church play a bit longer and not cued in the girls or the music so fast. Alexis' eulogy was beautifully done BTW.

Like everyone else, I thought the conversations between Danny and Jason and between Kristina and Dante were well done.  I was glad to hear Dante begin to verbally process some of this, and I look forward to hearing him begin to sort out his thoughts about what will happen to the kids.  Of course, the legalities are the legalities.  But I can't help but wonder if, when asked, all three kids would ask to stay with Dante---whose unpredictable PCPD schedule probably wouldn't allow it, but I would love to see them tell him they wanted to be with him.

If GH plays it right---and I suffer no delusion that they will---then, no matter where the kids go, there will be a non-biological sibling bond among them, and a non-biological parent/child bond (a la Mac with Maxie and Georgie) between them and Dante.  Could give them quite a few good storylines down the road.

Re: the digitalis---the MO would be essentially the same as the one Sidwell's henchman attempted on Isaiah.  So, yeah, I'm going with Sidwell, too.

I've learned not to look too closely, so I will try to ignore everything about Lulu's premature discharge from the acute care hospital, the status of her wound, the strength of each in her limbs, her ability to process what she's hearing, etc.

It wouldn't shock me to learn that Lucky's hairstyle is just a greasier version of Liz's.

Why does lucky still look like he hasn’t washed his hair?

The trina character should have moved back to Paris. The actress is a storyline that seems like it should be in a sitcom. It’s not very soapy to be angry about a class project.

Amd why is she this bitchy about it?  Her initial reaction was understandable, but damn, the guy appears to be actively making amends.

its such hamfisted, clumsy writing.  No subtlety or nuance whatsoever.

NuLulu isn't exciting, and neither is Lucky in his current state, but I think it will be exciting to see GF play Laura's joy at having both of her Spencer kids back in her life after all the Ryan's daughter/+baby drama that dominated her storylines with Nikolas and Spencer the last few years. I feel like the all the Laura-Elizabeth scenes (since Franco has been dead) are beautifully performed and you can feel Laura's history with adult Elizabeth and Lucky when BHerbst and JJ are in the scene(s). I'm looking forward to more scenes with Laura and her grandsons Aiden and Rocco as well. Both young actors seem talented.

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences in online communities. I wish we (all humans) treated each other with more dignity and respect.

Yes, that was ridiculous. Where did she think she was going to go when she's so weak and in pain from recovery, doesn't have clothes, a cell phone, or money, and is in a new facility?! Come on! If she manages to steal someone's phone and calls Laura, "Hey mom, come get me!" my eyes will just roll out of my head!

No long term coma patient wakes up and is able to move around like that.  And where the hell is her feeding tube?  This trope of ‘coma patient wakes up with minimal atrophy’ always bugs the shit out of me.  Although GH is far from the only offender.

I remember reading Stephen King’s ‘The Dead Zone’.  Where the protagonist ends up in a 4 1/2 year coma.  His recovery encompasses a few chapters, and takes place over a period of a few years. YEARS!   Which is fairly realistic.  I remember King saying in an interview that he actually spent a significant amount of time at a medical center where they had such patients in recovery to help research the subject.

Bit Lulu will be back to 100% in a matter of weeks at most.

I don't care that Lulu is not realistically portraying a just come out of a coma patient. Why? That would be beyond boring AF to watch. We got blurred vision, no makeup, chapped lips, weak legs, so weak that she fell down and she's punching her legs to try and get feeling in them. Works for me.

It's only one ep, but, damn good casting. She looks like a cross between Julie Marie Berman and Emme Rylan, leaning more towards the former. I never saw Alexa Havins on AMC, and while I know many grew to loathe her character, her acting was never the problem from what I've heard.

Re: Lucky, yes, it shows he's still a shitty father, but damn, that he clearly is going to stick around because Elizabeth needs him really says something. He's not sticking around for his mother, his sister, his son, nope. But for Elizabeth? Her, he stays. I like the layers this adding to their story that hopefully will be addressed.

I howled with laughter at Nulu being spryer after 4 years in a coma than I am after a gummy-assisted sleep.  Brava on that ~realism, writers.

Also, when Kristina came down the stairs at the penthouse I totally forgot for a second that she's not only Sam's sister, but Dante's, as well.  Dual-grieving!

There's no way Drew is going to want custody of those kids.  He's too busy sniffing around Willow and being a general asshole to actually parent.

Is it me or do these people rush to clear out the deceased's belongings?
My mother couldn’t go through my father’s clothes for weeks. We didn’t touch his things because we thought of them as belonging to her now. We helped her when she was ready.
I felt the same way when Kristina lost the baby and TJ’s family showed up to take the baby’s clothing and toys.

So, I guess the funeral was just supposed to be attended by those who were related to Sam or were her friends, former rivals, and former lovers?

Because I didn't see Felicia or Mac, either, aside from others that were mentioned upthread. So much for community.

I just remember Lucky's funeral. Okay, yes, better production values, and I guess the show had a bigger budget, but it seemed to me, like nearly the whole town showed up.

I guess I should be grateful that bigot Natalia didn't show up on Mooby's arm.

Sorry Elizabeth. But there's just nothing "more" or deep about Cujo. I know it was supposed to be about getting along, but nope. Not with her. Nor do I want to understand that heifer or see Elizabeth and her being "friends" now. Nope, nope, nope.

That said, my next piece, I know will be unpopular, but it must be said:

Sorry, Jason. it wasn't Sam who taught you about life or love, or knowing the difference between banging/fucking/boinking and making love. That would be ROBIN. She helped shave off some of your anger-boy Borgness when you woke up a brain damaged amnesiac who didn't know anything but rage. You helped her, and she also helped you.

So FUCK OFF, SHOW. I know what I know and what I watched over the years.

Ahem.

I must have a cold and black heart because only Nancy Lee Grahn/Alexis had me tearing up yesterday. And I guess they couldn't use flashbacks with Sam and Kristina and Molly when they were wee, because hey, both are now being played by different actresses.

The only people who moved me yesterday were NLG/Alexis and KV/Molly

The only people who really moved me yesterday were NLG/Alexis who broke me and KV/Molly speech. I did like the actor playing Rocco who is really good talking about how they're going to be family and they will always be brother and sister ❤️ I was happy that deadbeat was up there with his son, by his side. I wish they had Emily up there too. I was surprised that there wasn't any Jasam flashbacks I guess they used their quota when she died & he had one last moment with her. Dom was good to if not understated, restrained. My heart breaks for Dante and I'm honestly curious how he is going to reckon with Lulu out of her coma, the secret and he basically lost Sam so she could "survive" 😔 If he keeps his distance 🤔

The less said about Kristina the better. I need Nina to take off the delusional glasses and stop letting him play her for a food. The desperation is ugly. I need someone to drop a casket on NotDrew. I didn't feel anything from BA/Spin speech because despite Sam accepting him and getting Jason to he has always prioritize Jason and being his bitch on the side. He always makes excuses for Jason harmful choices including abandoning his kids to play captain save a hoe for Cujo. I just never bought their friendship or as equals.

Cujo shouldn't have been up there speaking and they should have had Maxie speak since she is Sam longest friend, instead of acting like that leech and Maxie are a package deal with having him speak for her to. Maxie friendship with Sam pre dates Spin and that unfortunate relationship and after it.

His hatred of Sonny and Jason is well-known and accurately portrayed. They're ramping up the animosity between him and Alexis, and on the PC scale of deadbeat dads, he's not high on the list. There were mentions of Molly talking to him regularly and going out to LA to visit him.

But Ric will be used regularly as a punching bag by the writers to prop up Sonny/Carly/Jason etc..  It’s so goddamned lazy.  Ric should get to be right a lot more than the writers will allow.  Even if he isn’t meant to be a great person.

It's such fanservice that Lucky is going to walk away from Brennan's offer in this moment out of love/concern for Elizabeth, thanks to nuLucas' phone call. Not because he's received urgent news about nuLulu or because he thinks he should be a present father.

I don't care. I love that Lucky is going to stay because Liz is in trouble and you bet he is going to play detective and find out who is responsible for killing Sam/framing Liz.

Love the scene with Danny and Jason especially with Jason and listening to what Danny says and what he needs.

As for custody, Sam may have drawn her will up regarding her wishes but Drew didn't lose his parental rights over Scout and Jason isn't going to let Drew raise Danny. Alexis is really out of luck if she thinks she is going to get them to agree to what is in that will. She could guilt them to keeping Danny and Scout together but she is not going to get far with that.

I think it would have been more interesting if Sam named one of her siblings (Molly or Lucas) to raise the kids.

I'm new to all this lawyer-y stuff, but I would think a Will would be signed and dated.   Then they would know what Sam was thinking when she wrote it.

I'm really starting to hate Kristina.  Someone returning from a funeral does not need to come home to find the sister of the deceased "helping" by packing up her things.  Change the locks, Dante.

Alexa has not aged a day and appears to still have the grit of Julie Berman's Lulu without being as prissy and insubstantial as Emme was. Unlike JMB who I always found hard and cold, Alexa Havins just isn't built like that onscreen. So far she's made a strong impression, but if she spends the rest of the week (or month) hanging out with Cyrus Imma riot.

I never had a problem with Lulu being an investigative reporter - it was a prime adventurous profession for a Spencer IMO. It was the execution and ER's meager portrayal that threw it off. I hope they continue her in that role or something like it as opposed to going back to aimlessly hanging around a club or that damn boat. Didn't the Haunted Star blow up anyway?

I'm not sure Turning Woods is as wonderful a facility as everyone says. Lulu was hooked up to all kinds of machines. I would think someone's vitals would change when they awoke from a coma, and they would definitely change when said coma patient began moving about and trying to get out of bed. However, no one came in, not even the doctor who stood outside the door talking to Cyrus after she awoke.

And FWIW, Did Lucas really need to be called in on the day of his sister's funeral? Couldn't she have waited 12 hours or given him the "no doctor error" information over the phone? Dito for Elizabeth.

Lulu’s return makes me think that ABC could develop spin off properties to create the GHU (General Hospital Universe).  This make sense as Disney owns ABC, and is really into that.

Several possible spin offs include:

The new Adventures of Girl Reporter (Lulu’s teamed with sidekick Spinelli)

Lucky Spencer: International Man of Mystery (Lucky and Isaiah on WSB capers)

Mr. Quartermaine Goes to Washington  (Drew’s congressional adventures)

Cassadine Island (Nikolas, Valentin and Charlotte open the Island as a tourist attraction and magically grant guest’s fantasies.  Look for OG Spenser to shout “de plane” at the beginning of each episode)

Barracuda Tank (Sonny, Tracy and a returned Jax listen to funding requests from entrepreneurs)

Lucy the Vampire Slayer  (The vampires are back, and Lucy Coe is more hyperactive than ever)

The shows practically write themselves, which is really good, given the current level of writing on GH.  And all of this culminating in two sweeps events, General Hospital: Infinity War, and General Hospital: Endgame.

I'll give Portia a pass on the timing for Lucas. I'm sure he would want to know asap. And to see the report himself. But Elizabeth? Unless she was trying to warn her without warning her, I agree that didn't seem appropriate.

I kind of like the setup for this custody battle. Although, Danny’s probably too old for it to have a dramatic impact. It would be interesting to see Alexis fight to enforce the agreement, realize Drew is a total dick and then switch to Jason’s side, who would let the Davis-coven take on most of the parenting.

I suspect this storyline is going to define Danny as a character, and he's going to end up being the brother who will go balls to the wall for his baby sister.  People are gonna learn the hard way not to F with Scout.  Which really, would not be a bad story, if they don't mess it up.

At first I thought it was ballsy for her to be there without her “brother in laws” knowledge but then I remembered she also HIS sister and to me that seemed a bit more natural.

Admittedly, I am no expert on child custody issues but does a will really trump the rights of the other parent and their right to parent the child in the event of death? DH and I stipulated TOGETHER our wishes for our minor children should we both become deceased at the same time (when they were minor children) but I couldn’t imagine either one of us would have had the right to “will” the kids to a non parent  in the event of only one of our deaths. I realize Sam wasn’t currently married to the fathers but that should be irrelevant.

Alexa Haven really does seem to channel JB’s LuLu, which makes me happy. The last LuLu never did. To me she was playing a whole different character who also happened to be named LuLu. I really don’t love when new actors make the character “their own” so drastically they no longer resemble the original character. Just create a new character, if that’s the way it’s going to be.

In that vein, even though she has played the character longest, I’ve never loved LW’s version of Carly because she’s plays her as an entirely different character than SB did. Rewatching old episodes lately and that really stands out to me. Nothing against LW- I loved her as Ally Rescott. But she just doesn’t give a historically accurate portrayal of Carly.

But AH really resembles both in looks and so far in attitude. I never really felt Emme had near the spunk LuLu historically had.

Yup, that's what I saw. I was never a fan of JMB, but she was Lulu. Yet, in one scene of AH, I saw her Lulu, but what was nice is that I also saw shades of ER's as well.

I also agree re: LW vs SJB as Carly. I adored Sarah's Carly. She was my favorite character on the show at the time. LW's Carly is a completely different character and always has been. That grit and vulnerability is just not there. I miss Sarah's Carly so much.

The way Portia says "Nurse Baldwin" makes me want to reach through my screen and throttle her.  I've worked at hospitals before that were great places to work and had amazing reputations and then one asshole got put in charge and the whole dynamic shifted and Portia reminds me of one of those assholes.  Just the condescension dripping off her voice is insufferable! I hope the nurses go on strike, the hospital gets a lawsuit, and Portia loses her damn medical license for the Heather test results tampering.  They can make Brad co-CoS, I don't even care if it doesn't make any sense!

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?
