Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

Oh, but it's a raging torrent.  Under a footbridge.

Maybe it's like the Metro Court Pool.  "Help, I'm drowning!".  "Stand up."

Maybe she'll end up on the Pennsylvania side of the river, and get to start her life all over.  It's like Felicia's tree proverb.  When's the best time to get out of Port Charles?  20 years ago.  When is the second best?  Right now.

This is an amazing post, and I didn't feel that liking it was enough.

I laughed at the dramatic way they showed Alexis entering Pentonville. Hearing more than once that she's already been there undercuts the whole sequence. None of this is new to her.

When that female prison guard whipped her around to face forward and was making her wince a little as the guard was doing something rough to her back, all I could think was that it was the same sex choreography they always made her do with Julian.

Why is Ric so aggressively pursuing Elizabeth even as she says no? What is wrong with this show? Franco went after her in the creepiest ways and it was never properly acknowledged. And now Ric keeps pushing to have a relationship with Elizabeth when she's been very clear she's not interested.

My take was that this is only like the second time they've hung out, and the first time he asked if there was a chance. He was pretty respectful of her answer. (So far.)

When Jason is done pretending he knows how to play poker can he retrieve my car from the lot, it's the white Camry. ..I mean, could they not find a jacket for him that did not make him look like a last minute fill-in valet?! And I'm sorry, but he and Anna's phone stealing spycraft make Sam and Spinelli's work on Cates look like 007!

I wonder what the going rate is to play a comatose arm on a daytime soap.

How generous for Sandra Bullock to lend Anna her outfit from The Lost city.

Joss and Jordan talking about organ donation when both their organs were stolen.

Amazing restraint by the writers to not have Joss extol the wonders of Jason after Jordan said Anna is determined and can get a job done. /s

Yeah, ES's latest return is just reaffirming to me how played out the character is.  And she's never been the strongest actress but it's glaring now.

It's delusional for him to think Elizabeth would be interested in him at this point. The last time Ric disappeared was when Elizabeth was going to marry Jake Doe aka Drew, after Elizabeth discovered that Ric paid Hayden to appear on her doorstep, claiming to be the mysterious Jake's wife. At the time, Ric wanted Elizabeth and "Jake" apart so she would take him back; he didn't know Hayden and Elizabeth were half sisters and neither did they.

Ric has always resented her attraction to and friendship with Jason as well. He pressured her to admit to her ONS with Jason when she was on the witness stand for Jason's murder trial. He gave her a lot of attitude about Jason after the trial, and she called him cruel.

His obsession with Elizabeth is almost as creepy as the way Franco pursued her. And why would any woman want to date a man who is as hateful toward his ex-wife, who is a good mother to his daughter and her other daughters, as Ric is toward Alexis?  That's not even counting Ric's actions/behaviors when he was Elizabeth's husband.

Stolen from killers. If Franco was still alive, I am sure the show would have someone to cut out his liver and give a piece to Lulu.

I actually need a side by side by side. The only new teen I know for sure is Gio and he’s not even their vortex. I’m actually confused. Hudson West shot up on height this much I know but was he written out or replaced? I really do need a screen and/or head shots of the current Danny, Aiden and Rocco. They never seem to air the same day which confuses me even more. LOL!!!!

Link to comment

Can’t tell them apart either, mostly because I don’t care. They’re only used to prop up (Jason) or tell on (Finn) characters, the writers don’t allow them to have personal stories.

Oh yeah, at one point one came out for a whole minute? No romance, nothing. He just bakes.

Hudson plays Jake, and it's not difficult to figure out who he is, as he's the best looking out of all the remaining three, and also the better actor. Jake is in Spain right now. Word was he's still with the show, but offscreen for now.

Danny I figured that actor either has braces or there's something weird with his teeth. The new Aiden looks too much like him for me to figure them out. Rocco? his hair is slightly darker, but none of the curly thing that the other two actors have going.

Heh. I was going to post: "Hey Jasus! Rick Blaine called from 1944 Morocco. He wants his jacket back."

In other news - the Insta-chemistry between Isaiah and Jordan is quite nice. They make an attractive couple and I'm glad Jordan has been saved from the Horror Show that is Brick (no last name, just "Brick").

Count me among those who wish that Col. Tad Parker had kept the facial hair and accent. In an odd reversal, shaving the goatee and mustache seems to have aged him, visually.

What's really interesting? odd? Is that he didn't have the accent when he first showed up. Then suddenly he had the accent, which we all asked-at the time-where did that draaaawl come from? And now here we are, asking what happened to it!

Maybe he ran into that dialect coach at Kelly's and she cured him of the accent over lunch.

Now we know why Ric is being so pushy with Liz -- to set up a triangle with Lucky.

The Jason/Anna/Holly/Jenz story is like the old school capers of the 90s so I'm grateful for that.

Michael is complaining about Ned's running of ELQ and Lois is singing the praises of Sonny -- it must be a day that ends in 'day'.

Portia says bitchy things about Nina to Curtis, and then is all smiling to Nina in person. Why am I not surprised?

"I have some plans for our family...." Curtis, have you shared those plans with your wife? And Portia didn't ask. Ugh, those two are such nimrods.

I'm so bored watching poker games. LOL that Anna tells Jason to do what Sam would do if he's stuck in a game. No one wants his boobs in their face, Anna.

Ric doesn't have to be pushy to set up a triangle. Elizabeth isn't interested (and hasn't been since he returned), and Lucky isn't even in Port Charles yet.

Also liked the imagined Liz/Lucky convo but making them a couple again, would be a regression.

Hated that a no Sonny ep had to have a character sing his praises ad nauseam.

Here's where I confess to my great shallowness. Because this statement is true and I HATED Franco. To a worrying degree considering he's a fictional character. I never liked Ric either, despite recognizing that Rick Hearst is a talented actor. And Ric's still being an asshole.

But this silver fox look he's sporting? It's working for me.

Since I rarely pay close attention to Lois, I never really noticed before but if she truly has a Brooklyn accent, she would not be pronouncing’ and’ properly. It’s more of a nasal ‘eand’ sound. I’ve been hearing it my entire life and it always bugs. That and ‘aks’ instead of ‘ask.’ And now it bugs me lol!

so Ned and Sonny are alike? Well I can think of one way in which they’re very different: to my knowledge, Ned has never killed someone, or ordered a hit. And Gio, please shut up and go away. You’re a guest in Ned’s home. You don’t get to barge in and tell him he’s out of line, especially when you have no idea what’s happening.

let me guess…Lucky will escape and Anna, Jason and Holly will be cell mates at Sidwell’s camp. For two former spies, neither one of them is very. Discreet ….I did enjoy lucky’s hallucination of Liz, but I’m already sick of the whole ‘I couldn’t be the father Aiden deserves so I left. I had no choice. I couldn’t risk you seeing me flawed.’ WTAF?

im surprised Michael didn’t pitch a fit when Drew told him that Curtis would be the acting CEO. And Drew, stay the hell away from Willow! At this point it’s getting creepy. ‘Nothing happened and nothing will happen.’ Then why do you keep following her?????

oh well at least it was one day without Sonny and his family drama.

The whole trip was engineered to coincide with GF’s vacation so don’t expect to see Laura until Lucky is back in PC safe and sound. And of course he’ll be the perfect liver donor despite his boozing and drugging, which everyone and their sister seems to have forgotten about! And Isaiah will naturally perform the surgery since he’s a renowned transplant surgeon. Then they’ll all join hands and sing kumbaya. 🙄

Portia is something else. She didn't want Trina working for Ava. She didn't want Trina dating Spencer. She didn't want Curtis doing something or other (can't even remember now.) Now she thinks the freakin' Quartermaines are too dangerous?

ETA  I saw a synopsis somewhere that there were supposed to be Robert/Jack scenes today, but there weren't, sadly.

DZ continues to impress me by bringing just the right tones to his scenes.  I just find him very believable as a man who is emotionally battered but still managing to stand up to his responsibilities as a work partner, romantic partner, loving ex-husband and father.

Speaking of standing up to responsibilities......I liked Lucky's hallucination-induced conversation with Liz, but I would have loved it a thousand times over if it had been a real conversation between the two.  I just don't think the writers are brave enough to go there.

Dr. Isaiah would be a welcome addition to the cast, but I still think Jordan has more chemistry with Drew.

I don't think the writers have a clue what to do with Gio.

Hudson West should have positioned as the new Jonathan Jackson. I am not saying tons, but he should have been a supporting player during the year and maybe a kid centric storyline during the summer, if he was opened to it. But we had terrible storylines involving NB’s Spencer being a huge brat. They also wasted Tequen Richmond when he was playing TJ. Now the audience doesn’t have much affection for the character, because he wasn’t properly built up.

Hey, Gio, shut up. You interrupted a conversation you have no place in.

Back in the day, in my family, he would have heard, "Grown folks are talking. Why are you standing here looking in my mouth? Go outside!" Although the way RF played it, she subtly shifted from her "proper" way of speaking back to Lois' native accent at Gio's prodding, so I guess it's back to Bensonhurst for good.

In a related theme - Anna won over Holly in the battle of English accents. Anna's accent sounds much more polished and cultured.

Curtis's "but I did my hair for tonight" was 24k Gold. Let's put a fiver in the writer's tip jar for that one..I actually LOL'd.

The "Rescue Lucky" S/L really does have 90s vibes - the writers really do seem to be trying for a change - but something's missing.

Lois acknowledges the boathouse is still a crime scene. Yet the Scorpios had brunch there and Willow was doing yoga there while Drewfus was oily there. Surprised Michael didn't tell the kids staying at the Quatermaine Home for Slightly Deviant Children to have a water balloon fight to really contaminate the crime scene.

Gee, Lois, I think steering one cousin to a life of crime and MURDERING the other is a pretty good reason to hold a grudge against someone.

What the hell was that with Lois comparing Sonny and Ned to Gio.

Firstly he's a guest in Neds house so he can shut up and Lois isn't family anymore either so she can also shut up. Sonny murdered AJ, I wish someone was allowed to say that. He also did murder Jagger Ned is not wrong. Michael knows it.

Ned and Sonny are nothing alike.

It has the feel of "Look, we hired this impressive guy" and now they're stuck because they have no story for him. He drifts among the character being used for exposition.

But at least it's better than what they have for Dex who really is just a day player unless he's having sex with Joss.

I had a slight fondness for TJ in the Richmond years but the current surrogate storyline has ruined him, not the lack of writing. I don't think anyone could survive the selfish, angry person TJ is today.

I'd enjoy Gio more if he literally just played the violin in the background providing the audience cues on what they should be feeling like a one man Greek chorus. He really is pointless like 1/3 of the cast.

The Liz/Lucky conversation would have been more meaningful if Lucky had also mentioned Cam and Jake. Lucky should be feeling guilty for far more than abandoning Aiden.

I think they are and I think they will get there.

The scenes reminded me of this dialogue between Lucky and Nik from 2011:

Nikolas: Now, I don't do this very often. I don't think I ever have. But you are my brother and you're gonna listen to me right now. You understand? You understand me?

Lucky: Yeah.

Nikolas: When you're lying on your death bed and you're about to take your last breath, what do you think you're gonna think about? Huh? Some big case that you cracked that nobody else could solve? Some nice vacation that you took with all your friends? Not even that intervention that you had with Luke that apparently didn't do any good. You're not gonna think of any of that stuff. You're gonna think of one thing and one thing only. And that is... just before you pass and you hold your hand out, the only thing that you are gonna care about is whose hand is on the other end, brother. That is it. If you can answer that riddle... then you've figured it all out.

I think the kid who plays Gio is actually talented and it's such a shame they haven't written for him.  He was brought on for Trina, from what we were told, but they're not writing for Trina either, so who knows what's going to happen.

I honestly hate Lois and having her be the mob defender is really hurting the character, especially for those like me, who never saw her original run.  I don't care about her at all, I have zero fond memories or attachment.  To me all she is yet another Sonny apologist and butt kisser.

Ned is NOTHING like Sonny.  That was absurd and disgusting honestly.

I am barely watching atm til Lucky and Laura, etc. reunite but damn, JJ and Becky still got it. And I was not one of their stans back in the day. As I've said before, their romance was too saccharine for me when they were young. Not anymore.

GH is once again doing one of my pet peeves though, something that has plagued Frank Valentini's soaps since OLTL. They too often have characters talk shit out in dreams or hallucinations or whatever and then never get around to the actual discussion IRL because Frank needs another handful of 90 second scenes for Violet, Carly or Jason. The attitude becomes 'you got those fantasy scenes, right?' (This is the same lazy attitude that governs stuff like only focusing on Lucky's biological child vs. the other two sons he actually raised.) No! So whenever LL2 do link up again for real they better get to business.

Same here, I think he’s a great find that they’re completely wasting (GH’s signature move). If I was 20 years younger I could develop a pretty hefty tv crush on him. He and Trina could be a great couple if they’d just write them a damn story.
