Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

I'll admit it, Spinelli doing Tracy's number made me laugh. I wasn't expecting it.

My irritation with Lulu knows no bounds. Couldn't she give it a rest for a couple of hours?

I do like the umbrella aspect of the Nurse's Ball but the timing of some of these conversations stinks. They deserved to stand alone and liven up the daily tedium.

"These Boots Are Made for Walking" is directed at a man, not from one, but okay, Show. Your track record on this sort of thing is shaky anyway.

I know, that juxtaposition is what made me laugh thru the cringe.

I was just a kid when Nancy Sinatra did that song but I bet I still know all the words. Hey, at least it wasn't Harper Valley PTA.

I’m just glad the opening number wasn’t that stupid Nurses ball song. But having only three nurses and one doctor along with a bunch of professional dancers was pathetic and just shows how badly they need new nurses.

I thought Bradford did a good job with that song. It was clear he broke character for most of it and it was kind of fun. Giovanni is extraordinarily talented but violin music just doesn’t do it for me. And I didn’t get all the jumping around like he was an extra in Olivia Newton John’s ‘physical’ rather than playing a classical piece. But c’est la vie.

porita is and always will be too stupid to be a chief of staff. Tampering with test results for personal gain is NOT a hospital issue. It’s a YOU issue and could land your ass in jail as well as get you fired. And not telling your husband immediately, then claiming you would never lie to him about something important just proves you don’t belong anywhere near patients.

Joss can take ALL the seats. MICHAEL’s children? Last I checked, Willow gave birth to Amelia and legally adopted Wiley. I kinda wanted Willow to just haul off and punch Joss. But of course Drew had to show up and rescue her because heaven forbid she be alone for more than 30 seconds. She might actually grow a brain cell in that time and kick him to the curb.

Lulu, Lulu, Lulu. Is the world going to come crashing down if you don’t confront Lois right this very minute in the middle of the nurses ball? Really? You couldn’t have just pulled her aside tomorrow morning?

OK, was I the only one pissed off by Drew's line yesterday to Anna and Emma that "the Nurses Ball was founded in honor of Robin" ? Um, fucking no, it wasn't. The first ball was in 1994 and was created to support awareness and funding for AIDS and HIV. Robin and Stone's big storyline didn't kick off until after that first NB (either in late 94 or early 95, I can't remember which - but I remember that the second NB in 95 was when Stone admitted having AIDS to the entire Quartermaine table, which was heartbreakingly still full of Quartermaines).

I for one love that they've brought the NB back, however much a cringey shadow of its former self it's become, just because it reminds me of how much I fucking loved GH back in the day. And Stone and Robin's AIDS storyline remains probably my favorite ever soap storyline. So if the idiot writers are going to use the show's history, and my favorite storyline to boot, they need to fucking get it right. 🤬

Me screaming for the more annoying characters to die is becoming a regular thing .

I've taken to alternating making barf noises with screaming at the characters to die. Breaks up the monotony. 😉

Then again they’re probably afraid a cat or dog would upstage the entire cast. 🤣

And they absolutely would. Easily.

Josh Kelly is ridiculously charming when they let him be so.

Hear hear. I've liked him since his OLTL days, and actually thought he would've been a fun Dillon recast, with a similar vibe to SC.

Willow is still wearing her rings from Michael as she tells Josslyn her children belong with her and she's moving on with Drew. Girrlll, so pathetic.

I'm honestly shocked they haven't had Drew propose to her and be the one to take Michael's rings off for her.

One thing I always like is that we see nearly all of the cast together. That rarely happens.

Lots of yes to this.

Not just you. And yeah, in the first Ball, Stone and Robin did the Romeo and Juliet scene, which was cute because she or he had to whisper to the other to lift their head to do the kiss!

And it was in 1995’s Ball where Stone revealed he had AIDS. He was gone 7 months later.😭😭😭😭😭😭

We had the wonderful Robin draped in the blanket in ‘96, where a newly brain damaged Jason lifted her in his arms and took her offstage, while Cujo SEETHED with jealousy.

PREACH!!!!!!

1998 was the last good Ball- with a stoned Alan dropping Robin and Ned coming to the rescue. And everyone reading notes about how AIDS affected them. Well, I remember Robin telling the story of her and Stone. And Tony crashing the Ball. And oh my, the production values!!!!

All that jumping and hopping around Gio was doing did nothing for me. He just looked silly.

STILL Kristina remains tone deaf. And STOOPID.

That said, I know the Nurses' Ball is supposed to be amateurish, but that kid has talent.

I would like for a hole that goes straight down to hell to open up and swallow Lulu. But it might actually spit her right back out.

Can't wait til the day after to confront Lois, Girl Reporter?

She couldn't even wait twenty minutes.  Ugh, totally insufferable.  I can't wait to see the look on her face when everyone isn't showering her with thanks for outing this secret.

I think she kissed him after he, as Romeo, had "died", and he kissed her back - she whispered, "You're supposed to be dead!" and he whispered back "I'm not that dead!" 😊

That’s Right! My bad! But I got the skit right! And I think it was the first one where Robin, Maxi, and  Georgie sang “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, to Mac. We went from fun acts like that to Frank’s “vision” which only had one good act-Rick Springfield as Noah, getting Rick Springfield to perform!

I’m a sucker for the Nurses Ball, cheese and all. When it gets too cringe, I hit the mute button.

I also like to see the gala outfits, but really hate the red carpet. No one would care who these people are and the dialogue is always bad. Of course, Jane Elliott rose above it all but unless there’s a last minute twist, I’m very disappointed to not see her on stage.

The cowboy boots routine was… not well rehearsed, but the women looked great.

I’m actually intrigued by the secret Michael recast. Who else from OLTL hasn’t been cast yet? ;-)

If you squint, and just listen to the aggressively smug self-righteousness, you can't really tell Carly from spawn of Carly.

Speaking of smug, Lulu playing 20 questions cat and mouse with Lois with that oh so self-satisfied look on her face, was unnecessarily cruel. And I'm going to be really disappointed if this becomes a soft, dragged out reveal with no big explosive moment.

Soaps.com now reports that The Young and The Restless alum Rory Gibson has been cast as the new Michael!

While General Hospital hasn’t officially confirmed Rory‘s casting yet, it looks like he will be making his re-appearance in Port Charles at the Nurses Ball.

While I am disappointed it is not Drew Garrett, Rory is hot and looks great in that tux.

I know she hasn't been in the opening number for a few years now. I feel like you should be able to nope out after paying your dues like she has

Not in the opening number, her dress for the ball itself. Becky usually sews her own dress for that and they are usually lovely.

He is talented but I find that the jumping around distracts me from the music that he's playing.

NuMichael looks hot, more than CD. Can he act?

I miss the nurses ball having the room of actual cast.  No Maxie, Jason, Liz, Lucas, Lucky, Laura. But we get nurse Amy and Gio and Spinelli performance? The other ADA gets to attend to, although I loved her dress.

Tracy should have been there too.  Especially for the Gio stuff.

At least Portia told the truth finally.

Kristina should talk to Diane, follow her advice. Alexis is not thinking like a Cassadine. She should commit herself.

Go get Lois Lulu. Lois needs to be slapped and treated like filth by every Quartermaine and her stuff dumped on the street.

because Bailey Lou isn't his daughter? Georgie is. and she's like ... toddler so maybe Maxie just wanted to stay home and not bother. (Maybe KS isn't well and thats how they wrote it)

Sorry -- I was thinking it was Georgie who was sick. And I also figured that KS staying away was her choice, but my original issue still stands -- only women can take care of children? Even if another adult is mooching living in the house? I just wish they'd come up with a different reason that Maxie couldn't be there.

And, in other news, I wouldn't be unhappy if the ceiling of the MetroCourt ballroom collapsed, taking out Drew, Portia, Lulu, Willow, Lois, unctuous Sidwell, and heck, I wouldn't complain if Spinelli was added to the mix -- and maybe Kristina could rush in to find Sonny and it could get her too. I also want a unicorn.

Spinelli is not mooching. He originally moved in with Maxie to secretly help her pay for the expenses because she went into debt after Tracy took over Deception and she overextended. They have since then reunited and are living together and raising their kids together.

I don't know why Maxie wasn't there but Spinelli was there because Bradford actually can sing from the cast.

There a bunch of other people missing. Where's Laura. Liz. Lucky. Lucas.

Hmm maybe people with the names starting with L were not allowed in the building.

I would like to add that Lucy was actually pretty even-keeled and not all spastic like the previous Nurse's Ball when she was presumed dead and kept bugging Maxie all through Nurses Ball season.

Michael was hitting the gym during his recovery, I guess.

He went there, well . . . and came out, well . . .

IMO, he can act.  Y&R criminally underused him, something that show tends to do regularly.

Yeah I liked him as Noah but the character was as milquetoast as Michael. They never wrote for him and when they did, they changed course immediately. First he’s a photographer. Then he’s a nightclub owner. Then they just shipped him off to London never to be seen again. Rory has real potential so I hope GH gives him a chance to showcase that talent. First thing they need to do is get him out from under Carly’s thumb.

i can’t believe the nurses ball is 4 tables

I’ve never understood why they call it a ‘ball.’ A ball is where there’s dancing and food. This is just an amateur talent show where people dress up. Granted, not one of these women would consume so much as a piece of lettuce but still…

I hate that the Show used Ned to prop Sonny, his cousin's murderer, for "generosity" about funding Gio's music education.  Yeah, yeah, yeah, irony that they both don't know they are his grandfathers.

I did, however, love Ned confronting Drew about Tracy. Willow's going to look stupid for her righteous attitude toward Ned and Olivia.

The eyes wide with shock look was well done by Gio, hearing Lulu and "Aunt Lois" fighting. Great internal devastation in the scene with nuEmma before going off to perform with Anna and Chase. Him screaming on stage that Brook Lynn and Dante "didn't want me and gave me away" and smashing his violin, I did not see coming.

The betrayed, heartbroken look Dante gave Brook Lynn was very well done by DZ. Great reaction look by WK, too!

Sonny also credited the Nurses Ball to Robin and Stone, today.

I did like from the preview that Sonny knows from Lois's panicked line to him and then Gio's meltdown, that his good friend has been lying to him for decades. Lois deserves everything that's coming to her, esp. after admitting to Lulu that she and her mother just couldn't give Gio up but Brook Lynn can't ever know.
