The Andy Griffith Show - General Discussion

If Aunt Bee knows what a good pickle tastes like (Clara's), why doesn't she know what a bad pickle tastes like? And just how bad her own pickles are? -
Do telegrams come through phone lines? My corded, plugged into the wall phone works when there's no electricity.

A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here

Dear job applicants, If you don't really want a part-time job, please do not apply for the one I am advertising. It is abundantly clear in the job description that it is part-time only, with no benefits attached, so you should not be confused. And for the love of Pete, please stop accepting my part-time job only to turn around two weeks later and say, "Psych! I got a full-timer, so I'm outtie!" Sincerely, Browncoat This is the FOURTH time this has happened in the past year and a half, and the stretch between March and December of 2020 don't even count. I am tired of it. -
I was impressed with the Doberman! She was gorgeous. I'll have to check the Westminster page and see if there's video of the rest. I am disappointed (as always) that a little yappy snack, lap shark dog won BIS.

I'm a little mad that I missed the agility! I didn't know about it ahead of time. But I do plan on watching the conformation tonight. Well, so much for that. A severe thunderstorm* has occluded my satellite reception, right in the middle of the Group I most wanted to see -- the Working Group. I got as far as the Doberman before the signal got blocked. <sigh> Guess I'll go read a book instead. *Lots of rain and wind, but so far, only distant thunder. No hail yet, either.

The Personal History of David Copperfield (2020)

I loved it. -
Back in the 70s, my mother used a stove-top pressure cooker/canner to can vegetables. I was terrified of that thing! I avoided the kitchen on canning days. But I hope I can get this IP going. I am the queen of forgetting to thaw meat and I end up eating a lot of pasta at suppertime. Thanks for the recs! I'll check those out.

I am late to the party, as usual, but I just acquired an Instant Pot. My mother was given one that she doesn't need and won't use (she's retired, she doesn't care how long it takes to make food), and she passed it off to me. I find that the small booklet that came with it is lacking. Does anyone have any recommendations for recipe books? Or even just a general cooking guide? Like cooking chicken or other meat from frozen? Or fish -- can you cook any fish, or does it need to be a sturdy fish like salmon or tuna? I like the idea of a baked potato in 12 minutes, @JTMacc99! But I need a bit more guidance!

We only have Petunia's word for that. It may have seemed that way to Petunia, but it may not have actually been the case. Do we know where Petunia went to school? Did she go to boarding school, or did she stay home? For that matter, and I honestly don't remember, where are Petunia and Lily's parents?

3/5 this week

Congrats to Katie! Especially since she was in the red at the beginning. Did I imagine it, or was middle guy bouncing slightly? I got FJ, but I had to think about it for a bit. The only TS I got was Ferdinand.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

New day, new peeve -- assholes who don't turn on their car's lights when it's raining. Especially when they drive a silver/grey car and it's raining so hard that you can barely see the lines on the road. Not only did I have my lights on, I also had the hazard lights on -- top speed was about 35-40, the rain was so bad. And yet, there were multiple assholes who didn't even have daytime running lights (which are bad because they don't include taillights), much less actual lights. Grrrr. -
Much like Alex, who managed to turn nearly every interview into something about himself.

I knew as soon as I saw the category for FJ that I would not get it, and lo and behold, I had no clue. I honestly couldn't name the current nine if my life depended on it, much less who succeeded whom. But I got a ton of TS tonight, including polo, Adelie (my favorite penguin!), Garanimals, Harry Potter, Walter Reed, Oral Roberts, Moorish, and Heinlein.
-
The Sting. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, yes please! And the music, too -- great! But it's a long con! Am I the one being conned, or am I the one pulling off the con?

I do like the longer days, but I'd be happy with mid-70s at the most. -
Instaget FJ for me tonight. I was surprised any of them got it, since none of them knew Tony Randall! Mayim sort of got a "before your time" in with that. I did get Tony Randall, and the two states I picked were Kansas and Arkansas. I probably could have come up with Texas if I'd had to name all three, but since I didn't, I stopped with two. I also got patella.

I'll join in on the hatred of summer -- especially summer when you're having hot flashes. Hot flashes aren't so bad in the winter, but damn. It feels like I am going to spontaneously burst into flames. -
I finally got to watch last night's episode, and I very confidently said "lunch break" for FJ. We get two 10-minutes breaks per day (one before lunch and one after), but they are not called "coffee breaks". I don't know that I've ever worked anywhere that called them "coffee breaks" -- just breaks. Oh well. I did get the TS of Dixiecrat, buffalo plaid, Florence, blight, Secret Life of Pets, Baha'i, lion fish, and Black Sea. Black Sea was just a guess. Genre! I miss Alex.

Best & Worst Movie Friendships
Browncoat replied to Spartan Girl's topic in Everything Else About Movies
We'd need to know the backstory of Janis saying Damien is "almost too gay to function" -- it's possible that Damien said it first and okayed it for Janis but not for anyone else. Janis is certainly nicer to Damien than Regina is to her minions, though. And I think he gave as good as he got from her -- he certainly wasn't afraid of Janis the way Karen and Gretchen (and pretty much the whole school, including the administrators) were of Regina. -
I liked the first season a lot, but my interest waned rapidly with subsequent ones. I think I made it through the second season, and maybe part of the third? I don't even remember.

For things like Amazon, I'll buy gift cards at the grocery store and just enter those numbers. Amazon isn't getting any of my credit card numbers! Which is why I laugh when I get the robocalls from "Amazon" asking if I really did make that purchase and charge my VISA for $499.99, and to call them if I didn't. Peeve? I got that robocall three times yesterday, from three different numbers. -
It will be jarring if they go back to Alex episodes.

Instaget FJ today for me -- I had it written down before Mayim finished reading the clue. I hope this is a good sign for this week! The only TS I got was Tesla. And to be nit-picky and pedantic, the vet school in Blacksburg is not Virginia Tech. The vet school is the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. They probably would have counted me as incorrect, though, if I'd given the real name instead of just Virginia Tech. Hooray for Verlinda!
