Totally this and thank you for posting it ... we've spent almost every summer with at least one short trip out to the coast (usually Bethany but we get around to RB, Dewey, etc. to eat) ... we've always noticed that there was a huge number of young Russian women (maybe guys too but we noticed mainly the young women for some reason) working at the restaurants and stores. Assumed there was some sort of exchange program or SOMETHING involved but I never actually did any homework on it.

Maybe, just like certain immigrant populations are sent to certain areas (for example, a lot of Somalians in Minnesota and Arizona), for whatever reason there is a deal in place for the DelMar beach towns to hire seasonal employees through specific Russian agencies and have the paperwork set to go?

I hadn't thought about it until you guys started posting about it--we visit the FL keys in early spring, and there are tons of Russian waiters/waitresses in the oceanside restaurants.  I always just thought there must be a large Russian ex-pat community somewhere nearby.  I wonder if there is any equivalent program for American young people to work a summer job in Russia--what an opportunity to travel and learn!

So let her buy the fucking couch and see what the cats do.  Jackson Galaxy will tell them to put double-sided tape on the couch and put a scratching post close to it.

A few little "claw" mistakes on that leather sectional wouldn't be easy to fix.  Was there a BIG problem in allowing Colt to help make that decision...even though he agreed to allow Larissa to choose?

Add that her looks are average at best.

No, they won’t be easy to fix! I have leather couches/armchairs and 4 cats—and bought the scratching tower to place near them too late (and, yes, I think that’s what Jackson Galaxy would recommend).

I suppose you could try Astonish’s “Leather Conditioning Cream” to remedy the scratches after the fact, if they do scratch (haven’t had the time to try it myself so can’t say if it works). ??‍♀️

As somebody else already mentioned on the Colt/Lafawnduh thread, leather is actually easier to manage than cloth couches (which involves ENDLESS “what-did-I-ever-do-to-deserve-this” ? lint-rolling, especially if your cats are a long-haired breed). ????

Each individual cat will have their own preference, tho. So it’s a bit of a gamble if you have multiple cats... Some will prefer hooking their claws on your bedsheets, some will like leather, some will accept the scratching tower.

I’ve had friends in Indonesia who are divorced with children from previous marriages, and they’ve been lucky to find new husbands (mostly divorced/widowed men with their own children themselves).

But then again, my friends didn’t have such a rotten personality, so...

About 15 years ago there was an influx of young Russian speaking people that came to Ocean City MD and worked their butts off.  I had a waiter at a crab house, we stayed until 11pm, got up early the next day for breakfast at a different restaurant, (Dough Roller, yum French toast) and we had the same waiter, he told us it the norm with him and his friends to work day and night...they work hard, multiple jobs and bank a lot more money than they could have made at home.  Unfortunately, Olga came here, worked hard and got pregnant and unfortunately she got pregnant by an under employed, broke not so smart guy.  At least we know she won't be laying in bed all day playing on her phone and whining, the girl has hustle and has no problem getting her hands dirty.  Steven will have a hard time keeping up with her.

They will be fine and probably find better guys than the original Americans they have now.

Hi Betty I live in Howard Co  and my son is a teacher in Salisbury. There are a lot of Irish as well as others also that come for the summer and they work really hard. I don't believe that she came to hook a green card. I think she came for fun... hooked up and just got pregnant... unfortunately he is handsome young and broke. My daughters friend met an Irishman working in OC and have been together for over ten years.

The way she puts an E on the end of only certain words is some kind of strange affectation.  ColtE maybe be on the spectrum but Larissa has some kind of issue also.

I haven’t gotten through the whole thread so I don’t know if someone has addressed this further, but this might actually be a language thing like someone upthread suggested.

I speak Spanish and French and so it’s really easy for me to read Portuguese, but I can’s speak it at all and only understand about 40% of it spoken for this very reason - they add unwritten e’s at the end of a ton of words! But is more of a “gee” sound when it’s in Portuguese.

I'm not Brazilian and don't even play one on TV but Mr. Snappy has a ton of Brazilian friends through his work and several of them refer to him by his name with an "ee" sound on the end, even though his name is not one you'd "nickname" like that ... so I didn't even think twice when Larissa called him Colt-ee. What I'm not sure of is if it's an affectation or just the way they have learned to speak English.

I have tons of Brazilian friends and some Portuguese classmates/dormmates (although I mostly hang-out with the Brazilian crowd—because mutual love of BBQ) but I don’t recall any of them speaking like that?

Which is why I thought she was just being cute? Like you’d call someone “Johnny” instead of “Jon”? ??‍♀️

Maybe Brazilians from a certain region will have that accent? My friends were mostly from Rio and São Paolo.

Anyway, I’ve edited my posts where I called dude “Colt-ee”, and I apologise if I’ve offended anyone. Because I wasn’t trying to mock anyone’s accent, I honestly thought she was being cutesy! ??

I have an anecdote that covers a few of our discussion points.

In the early 70s, my father (Steven) was a medical resident.  It's gotten a little better, but they used to run residents into the ground.  Many hours, little sleep.  My mother went into labor with my brother.  Dad missed the birth since he had snuck off into an empty room to nap.  Mom was displeased, but the world didn't end.

I'm totally Team Olga.  I think she's a girl who had an accident while in the US working for the summer who is now doing her best to make the situation work.  She's super stoic.  She just puts her head down and gets the job done.

Olga is young and pretty, if she had alterior motives she likely could have gotten pregnant by a middle aged business man with a little $$$. She would not have chosen homeless Steven

So, I just had a brilliant idea!  Leida wants to become a doctor and I thought she should hook up with the school that Danielle is attending to become a nurse.  Two medical professionals!  Wait, what do you mean neither one is being completely honest about being a medical professional and working long hard hours?  What?  They just want to be famous?   I'm confused...

Honestly, I don't think anything you said was offensive at all!!!

But I did just ask Mr. Snappy if he knew the story behind this (he's learned a lot of "Brazilian Portuguese" for his work, which by the way is not to be confused with Portugal Portuguese LOL) ...

I hope I can explain this correctly but here goes ... while Larissa has a lot of annoying affectations, this one is actually legit.

Most Brazilians have trouble with a hard consonant ending to a word (such as a T) and soften it by adding an "ee" sound at the end. Many words in their language end with either a vowel or an s (soft consonant). So it's not so much an affectation, nor an affectionate ending to a name (like a nickname), it's just how they tend to pronounce those words.

In fact, he told me that the friends who always called him by his first name with the "ee" sound at the end realized it kinda bothered him and since then  call him by his last name (which has an s-sound at the end).

Assuming that they had a couch in their living room at some point, I'd like to see its condition.  Do you believe cats prefer leather/pleather for clawing over fabric?  That hasn't been my experience.  If you're going to have cats, you will have clawed furniture.  And as I said, Jackson Galaxy of "My Cat from Hell" fixes clawing problems with double-faced tape and more posts.

Nobody seems to understand that I think it's wrong to promise someone something, and then absolutely and without warning refuse to follow through.  I think it's especially egregious if the person has left home, family, all that she knows to live isolated, unable to work or drive, in a house without a living room couch.  This isn't a matter of common sense (cats v. furniture) afaic; it's a matter of keeping your word to someone you claim to love.

Was the conversation btwn Colt and Larissa regarding the purchase of the couch aired on tv?? If not, no one really knows what was said. If I recall, Colt's only broadcast thought on that topic was that he didn't want her to have his cc. Beyond that, we don't really know what he wanted or what was actually discussed.

In much the same way as native Spanish speakers have trouble with a consonant at the beginning of the word, so they often add a slight "e" sound. I had a Spanish teacher who was known as Escott in Spanish-speaking countries. I can't think of any other examples right now, but I know I've heard them. (They'll probably pop into my head right as I'm about to drift off to sleep tonight.)

I have a ton of Brazilian friends, and I've never heard this affectation, although I've never really listened. It probably doesn't help that they all speak perfect, nearly-unaccented English. But next time I see them I will pay more attention!

No, we have only Larissa's word that Coltie said she could buy anything she wanted, as long as Debbie was present.  Do we believe Larissa lied about that?  We did hear Debbie say Larissa was free to decorate the house any way she wanted, and we did hear Coltie say they hadn't bought a couch because they thought she (Larissa) would like to choose one.

Why is it so important for Larissa to be in the wrong on this?  Promises were made to her, and they weren't kept.  Plus, I want to know how much worse damage a cat can do to a leather couch than to a fabric one.

I'm not saying it's important for anyone to be right or wrong.  I find it laughable people are arguing over this when it's been shown so much of the show is fake drama (I voiced my opinion, but it's just my opinion and then I generally let it go).  But I think there is a lot of mis-understanding (and that's not a language thing - it's a poor communication/not spelling things out thing) between these three, and they need to hash it out.  I will say Larissa is a drama queen (her reasoning for the incident that got her arrested is laughable - Colt wasn't putting enough of their relationship on social media, when they're actually not allowed to while the show is airing - it's in the contract - many of the articles about it quote Larissa, so I'd say she said that) and Colt/Debbie are so in-tune with each other that they seem to forget that others are not.  But no, none of us knows exactly what was said, other than the snippets we saw on the show.  But yes, Debbie could have very easily said "This is just our first stop.  We have other stores to look at.  I get why you like that sofa, but the fabric is not ideal, and honestly, it looks like it's not good quality.  So let's see if we can find one similar to that, but with a different fabric and better quality".  I do that with Mr. Funky - make it a game, almost.  He tends, like Larissa, to want to grab the first thing that catches his eye, and that shouldn't be done.  It's just good economic sense.

Thank you so much for clarifying this! So Leida has a bachelor's degree in what used to be called "PRE-med" in the US and has not been accepted into, let alone attended, the advanced training required to become a physician.

No, no. It’s not the equivalent of pre-med (which still exists). In much of the world outside of the US and Canada, most degrees are bachelors level degrees, often 5 or 6 years and absent of most “gen ed” courses and you can practice in your field with it (plus any requisite residency/internship) once complete. Psychology, medicine, architecture, law.

Honestly, though, if she completed her studies (I call a big if in that), she would still have a HUGE uphill battle to even securing a residency in the US. Many foreign doctors end up applying to physician assistant programs or other health science programs that can be completed in 2-3 years versus attempting it - therejust aren’t that many residency slots.

See that is where my confusion lies. In the US, BA/BS programs are not necessarily difficult to enter. Some universities/colleges take pretty much any dinkus off the street who completed high school. Or even who dropped out but took a very basic test.

But in the US, those wanting to practice medicine (and other professions), have to perform very well in the BA/BS curriculum, and study for a very rigorous standardized test. Then, they have to apply to medical schools which are highly selective and will accept applicants w/ only the best grades and best standardized test scores. Then they are raked over the coals for basically another 4 years. And they are selected for the top specialties, again based on performance. And then, they must pass medical board exams to be licensed. But in Indonesia some dumb slacker can roll into any mediocre university/college, perform in a lackluster manner there for 5 years and hang a DOCTOR shingle by their front door??? How are ppl even still alive there??? LOL

I would guess it is like in the US were you have a discount dentist in every mini mall but on the other hand you have some very specialized work going on at other locations but we call both extremes doctor/dentist. We train all our doctors as if they are destined to be Gregory House. Even if we need some people  to do lower level work, we just don't call them all doctor with the we social benefits attach. Unlike how we think of nurse. and rarely make the distinction between RN's versus "fill in the blank" nurses who clean up patients at the initial contact.

Who is "we"? Are you in the US? Or Indonesia? I'm trying to understand fully what you mean.

I do tend to be aware of which nurses are nurse practitioners (highest level) vs RNs (next highest) vs the others (LPNs and others). And they all require vastly different levels and types of education. But in Indonesia anyone can become dr? There are no progressively-higher hoops to jump thru?

Hi Betty I live in Howard Co  and my son is a teacher in Salisbury. There are a lot of Irish as well as others also that come for the summer and they work really hard. I don't believe that she came to hook a green card. I think she came for fun... hooked up and just got pregnant... unfortunately he is handsome young and broke. My daughters friend met an Irishman working in OC and have been together for over ten years.

I work in Columbia off of Gateway Drive!

I don't think Olga ever thought of a green card, just came to make money, getting pregnant was probably not the souvenier she wanted, at all.

Just stopped by to say, "How does one even get a car without AC these days?"  I looked it up and it seems that a lot of Chrysler cars don't have AC standard and it costs around $5000 extra.  WTF?  I had air in cars since the mid 70s and that was when I was buying used cars because I was a teenager.  I can't imagine driving in a car without AC.  I love that now most GM cars have automatic starters standard which means you can pre-start your car to cool it, as well as, heat/deicing it.

I noticed they were driving with the windows closed, probably for the recording of the show.  OMFG!

Lafawnduh hasn’t been in that house long enough to know which cat likes what. ??‍♀️

How many cats exactly does Colt own, anyone know?

Lawfawnduh was awesome, Larissa doesn't measure up yet, if ever.

He has 3.  Cookie Dough, Baby Girl, and The Other One (I forget her name).  They were all introduced in episode one.

And cats aside, I wouldn't want a leather couch when I have an un-airconditioned car and I'd probably be sweaty all the time and sticking to the couch.

Thank you! ?✨

I can't believe I missed the cat introduction bit? ??‍♀️

That should’ve been the most important part for me. ????
