Ever since I read MEG I've been part of the will they / won't they / omg did they cancel the production again crowd so needless to say, I'm super excited for this movie.

Nothing in the trailer leads me to believe it will be anything like the book but it's been so long since I've read it I'm mostly in it for the Statham vs. The Meg

I just want to know if the damn ankle biter dog becomes shark food or not. The internet is not helpful.

This looks stupid as all get out, and I am so in.  The Statham versus a giant shark?  What else could I ask for?

Spoiler

According to posts on Does the Dog Die website, the dog is alive at the end of the movie despite appearing to get eaten by the shark.  I love this website, btw.

Why, yes, I just got back from seeing the first showing tonight.  No, I have no regrets or shame over it.

It mostly delivered on the dumb, shark eating entertainment that I wanted, but the first act did take a while to get going.  Too much time spent on shallow, cliched character being shallow and cliched despite attempts at backstory and "development."  But once Big Meg finally showed up, it was all worth it.  Sure, the CGI was shit and I admired Meg's abilities to just come out of nowhere all stealth like despite being the size of most boats, but the carnage was fun, even though it was obvious that stuff was cut to get a PG-13 rating.

Acting wise, Jason Statham played Scuba-diver Jason Statham, but it worked for this film and he was still one of the best actors here, which is really saying something.  A few others managed to get by (Cliff Curtis getting use his actual accent for once, while Robert Taylor was still talking like Walt Longmire, but he was good enough too), but others were... less then stellar.  Bingbing Li was incredible stiff like she was in most of the stuff I've seen her in, which has only been one of the Transformer sequels and The Forbidden Kingdom, so maybe she's just not very good with English and is better in her Chinese films.  Ruby Rose certainly isn't making me optimistic about her role as Batwoman either.  Rainn Wilson got a few chuckles, but I thought he would be funnier.  But, hey, it's not like I went in expecting to be blown away in the acting department.

I saw the "twist" with the second Meg coming a mile away, but still loved it.

Sadly, Statham didn't get to punch a shark, but how he takes out the Ultimate Meg is something I will so rewatch over and over again, once it is put on Youtube.

So, yeah.  Not going to say it was a good film, but I had fun.  Certainly not Jaws, but not the Sharknado series either.  I'll put it alongside Deep Blue Sea as a "B/C-level thriller with a better budget and cast then normal."  I had more fun then I did with Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, but that might say more about me then either film!

If I weren't heading out of town for the weekend I'd be going tonight. I'll be seeing it next week.

Does the dog make it or does it get gobbled up by MEG?

I take offense on behalf of Deep Blue Sea which I love and consider an A level sea creature thriller with an excellent cast.

I'd put it at B+ level myself.  There were still some deeply stupid parts, and yet, LL Cool J.

I wouldn't say LL Cool J elevates the material, though he was definitely enjoyable.

As for this movie, I suppose they're ahead of the game if the megalodon isn't leaping out of the water to catch commercial airplanes.

Which I thought would happen several times.  I kept saying, "Don't fly so close to the ocean!"  Really thought several times those choppers were gonna get swallowed.

It was OK.  To me, it kinda fell apart at the end.  They didn't seem to know how they were going to end this movie, so they threw a bunch of ridiculous hodgepodge stuff at us and basically called it a day.  Jason Statham is in great shape though.  I will give him that.  And it had enough thrills and special effects to keep me entertained through much of the film.

Maybe a slight step above those B-type movies frequently shown on the SyFy channel.  (and I happen to like a lot of those for snarky viewing pleasure)

For those worried about the dog:

Spoiler

It lives.

This movie was just not very good. The dialogue was elementary. Like, really, really bad. The non-shark plot bits were also really not very good. Some of the shots are pretty, but this is Syfy level with a blockbuster budget. I wasn't expecting much of this movie. I knew it was going to be dumb. I just wanted to be entertained, but the overall badness of it seemed to suck away most of the joy I could have taken in the rampaging, enormous shark parts. The fact that it was PG-13 took away from the overall menace, I think. Even though people were in danger, they only felt like they were in danger maybe 35% of the time they were supposed to be in danger. I didn't need it to be super gory, but people either got eaten in scenes with no blood (which made them come off as comedic half the time) or no one got eaten. And the romance subplot... I can't remember when the last time was that I saw something so hamfisted.

Highlight of the movie: Jason Statham singing 'just keep swimming'.

I wasn’t expecting much from this, but I actually thought it was entertaining and fun. It won’t win any Oscars but that’s not what it set out to do. Some characters did make some silly decisions like the daughter diving on her own to try to save the crew who were trapped and the investor deciding to blow up the shark. SMH.

Other than that the characters for the most part acted with sense. Once it was proven that there was something in the deep everyone immediately believed and got onboard with trying to address the situation in a sensible manner save for the investor.

I was annoyed by the only African-American in the movie playing the typical stereotype, the comic relief who at times came off cowardly, but his lament for his friends made up, somewhat, for his hysterics.

Again, this was good entertainment. I’d watch it again and would recommend to others.

I appreciated that the only African American in the movie didn’t die and actually looked like he had a date with a cute Asian woman in his future.  Sad to have to be appreciative about it, but in most movies, he’d be gone by the end.

It DID have he best single scene in any action flick. As to the Meg, it was well done, but generally awful.

They were cute together and the child actress was pretty good.  The actress playing her mother was terrible, however, though overall the cast worked well together and none of the characters were awful, even billionaire guy.

I think the PG13 rating hurts the movie.  The deaths are fairly predictable yet no one ever feels like they're in danger, if that makes sense.   I was expecting the Meg to take down the whole science station but that didn't happen.   There was a lack of tension; the shark attacks but then it seems like everyone has a decent amount of time to rescue those in peril and/or get out of danger themselves.

There were scenes shot for an R rating that didn't get used; which is sort of an odd choice.  Did they want a family friendly shark attack movie LOL?

I mostly enjoy it - it dragged a bit in the beginning but it looked good, Jason Statham was shirtless, and there were some fun bits.

In most movies he would've been the first one killed.

Went for Jason Statham, did not leave the theatre disappointed. (Though there was one moment when the camera lingered on his ridiculously cut body. It almost seemed like CGI.)

I'm not sure if his survival fully offsets that HE COULDN'T SWIM!!!

I could have done with a few more lingering shots like that but also not disappointed.

Just watched this on the airplane it's an OK action movie. The Shark was so over the top that I didn't get the same chills like Jaws. I spent most of the movie fearing Cliff Cutis' death which thankfully didn't happen. I also covered my eyes when Pippen was in the Ocean. I was happy to see him paddling towards the yacht at the end.

This is a real-life The Producers situation, isn't it?

Curious as to why? Looking at the BO ($550 million) on a 130 Million budget. That's a decent take sized hit.

I actually watched The Meg so many times, it's just a dumb/fun movie. I look forward to the sequel.

It's not that we're surprised there's a sequel, it's who they got to direct. Ben Wheatley's latest just dropped, a remake of the Hitchcock classic Rebecca. That is much more up his alley.

Ah, thanks. I have no idea who the director is so didn't understand the concern

I never saw this, but the name of the doggie is awfully similar to the one that wasn’t so lucky in JAWS. His name was Pippett according to my closed captioning.

Nothing will ever ever ever beat the classic that was JAWS. From John Williams’ score-that ominous cello, to not seeing Bruce until 2/3 through.
