Culture Check: How can we express our opinions and consider the effect our assumptions may have on the people around us? What impact might speculation have on others, especially when we speculate about children or complex issues like neurodiversity?

I hear you, but it could be Jacob's choice to be the only person to speak publicly about it.  Also, I don't think the producer was an actual TLC employee, but a 3rd party contractor.

Most producers on site filming are contracted by TLC to film - TLC may maintain some actual film crews but the vast majority of their shows employ 3rd party contractors, in part so that TLC can play this particular game. The family didn't hire and vett the production staff, TLC did.

This. Chris Cardamone was part of the on site film crew for the TLC show.  Why was Jacob in daily contact with this man? Because TLC was producing a show and contracted this man to work with a family with young children.

How many kids need to be molested for TLC to give a fuck?

I wonder if Matt and Amy have known about this before now.

I totally have questions about that. And for Zach and Jer as well.

Virtually all of these shows are produced by a production company, and then sold to the network that airs them.     This person worked for the production company, which is technically a contractor, but is tied to the network because they buy and air the product from the people who produce it.

I hope Jacob gets justice of some kind, and I wonder how many others will now come forward?

Let me be clear that I'm not absolving TLC.  The end.

Think about it this way.   A lot of large companies use 3rd party contractors.  If one of the contractors drives drunk in a company vehicle and causes a crash, the victims could - and should - sue the large company (as well as the contracting company) for the bad acts of their representatives.

I understand all of that, thanks, and didn't say otherwise.

I didn't think you were. I do think *TLC* is trying to absolve itself.

Thanks, and I agree that TLC will do whatever it can to absolve itself.

Me, too, especially if I felt like my father's inattention meant I was more vulnerable to being groomed.

Yeah Jacob was always the after thought to both Matt and Amy. How difficult it must have been for him as well, knowing what was happening to him, but also knowing that saying anything was going to upset the tv apple cart that both of his parents were clearly attached to.  I hope he's seeing a god therapist and I hope TLC and his parents split the costs.

Also, I noticed Caryn next to Matt on the mule in the clip about Zach and the tractor filmed in 2008– interesting.

Caryn  was pumpkin season manager for several years....but if you paid attention on the show at the time you noticed behavior that was indicative of something else

The news about Jacob also makes me wonder about Caryn's ex not allowing their children to be on the farm.  I'm not clear about the timeline and how old they would have been, though, so I'm not sure if that even makes logical sense, lol.  I also wonder if the alleged pedophile was present on the farm when the public was there, too, for pumpkin season.

It's a long list, so I've put the list of episodes and years that the scumbag worked on the show in a spoiler tag.  He also participated in Amy's charity golf tournament a couple of times.

Thank you for pulling that list together.  Meanwhile, TLC's statements have seemed to imply that the producer was just a guy that was hardly involved with them and the show.

What dates were the charity golf events?  I'm really curious about when and how Amy and Matt found out and what they did.

He was a supervising producer for the video of the golf events in 2011 and 2012.  He hasn't worked on the show since the golf tournaments.

MAYBE the parents found out about it back then, but Jacob asked them not to make a big announcement about it when he was still a kid.  If the abuse ended 10 years ago, he would have been 13.  Anything is conjecture at this point as to when the Roloffs were made aware of it.

If this is true, I hope this guy's life is ruined.  And I can't imagine Jacob would come out and name the guy if it weren't true.

My question is when the parents knew?     If they knew a long time ago, and kept filming anyway, because the producer had left the project, then that's still despicable.     Actually, whenever they found out, if they kept filming, or continue now, then I'm going to be very angry.

I've been rewatching the earlier seasons thanks to Discovery+. Some thoughts.

Jacob was clearly the bane of both Amy and Matt's existence. Amy sucked the joy out of soccer by constantly picking at his performance and not enforcing any age rules when the older boys played rough. Little tip - if you can't trust the roughhousing teenagers to not beat the nine year old up, you either stop the older kids or you don't let the younger kid play with the teens. You don't let it happen over and over and every time chide the younger kid for "being accident prone" and complain he needs to learn not to play with the older boys. Matt generally took the same attitude complete with calling the kid a sissy.

The Roloffs used to pray a lot more. Also they used to be a lot more physically affectionate - Matt and Amy especially.

Friends used to come over a lot more and not just the kids friends. Matt and Amy had a couple different little people couples they hung around with. It seemed like these were genuine long time friendships, which makes me wonder if Matt or Amy still keep up with them.

Amy generally was happy with gifts from Matt - he bought her an antique truck at one point (and I am genuinely curious where it went since I haven't seen it since) and she made a point of finding and gifting him with a really nice watch that he appreciated. Things were no where near as hostile.

Matt generally got the kind, fun dreamer edit. With some exceptions I will note, Matt came off well. The exceptions were some episodes in season 3-5 deemed "lost episodes" which are basically cobbled together scenes from season one. In those episodes we do see Matt engaging in the "I'm not telling Amy about x and just doing it" behavior.

The house is filthy all of the time. The kids are all over the place with discipline and disrespect and the problem is that neither Matt or Amy really want to be the bad guy. This isn't a "Amy never lets Matt discipline" thing - Matt periodically overrode Amy on discipline issues. They would both demand chores and punishment and undercut each other by refusing to work together.

Addendum to the house filth - Matt's *offsite office* was ALSO a complete pigsty.

While they did seem to have issues - Matt and Amy seemed idyllically married on the first Bahamas trip and on the cruise they took during pumpkin season.

Matt did have a tendency to make decisions that didn't include the family, like ripping out the peach orchard. There were also a lot of projects that just petered out - the christmas tree farm, the tower of terror, the water mill

The fractures in the marriage really seem to appear during the major remodel of the house. I honestly didn't remember it being so bad but yes, t was bad. It took six months. It was origanally pitched by Matt as a few weeks. The kids were sleeping on the floor in the living room for months. Worse, it was winter time and the house was totally open - no windows and sheets of plastic closing off the open areas. Also they were paying a thy went and Matt was making constant expensive changes to the plans and the work *had to shut down* with the house completely torn open. Matt and Amy argued harshly. Trust really seemed to be broken.

Amy had a tendency to pontificate over things like how she felt about certain spots on the farm, complete with staged scenes where she's staring off into a sunset. Or how awestruck she was that Bahaman tourist industry sorts gave them a flag.

The whole family are clods about food. Jeremy is mispronouncing fettucine and asking what a scallop is, his girlfriend eats wit her fingers at a fancy restaurant. Zach has no idea what escargot are, and nothing served in the house looks good. And good lord, for all the bitching over Amy being a gross cook - have you seen Matt make burgers? Or worse, tunafish? With mustard? And then leaving the dishes. It was bad.

Matt and Amy just never communicated well. They did seem pretty in love, even during the major remodel but thats where the major cracks began.

Oh, and Jeremy was painfully lazy and painfully aware that he was the specialist of all. And Zach was just a whiny bitch most of the time who needed to be told to shower more often.

Addendum - Season 7 episode 12, A Bridge Too Near, Matt goes on and about what a great cook Amy is, and how he loves her food. A significant subplot is Matt desperately waiting for enchiladas to be don and fighting with Jeremy over who gets the food.

eta There was some unattractive shots of Matt shoveling huge forkfuls into his mouth and talking while eating.

eta This episode seems to be the first time Caryn appears.

Hehehe maybe! All I know is that he was shoveling that enchilada in with great big gobs of sour cream and telling the camera that he loves Amy's food. Heck, even Jeremy was all "yeah this is good'.

I suspect they had already hidden the take-out containers.  So much of what we see on "reality" shows is NOT reality.

Actually it showed amy finishing making the enchiladas-not terribly messy either - and putting them in the oven. Then Matt waiting, singing Amy's praises, and then shoveling in with an open mouth telling us how good it was.

If Matt was miserable and lying cause he always hated everything associated with Amy then he's one hell of a liar because he was as happy as a pig in slops in that scene.

If she was doing something and it doesn't look messy, that makes me think even more that she had simply moved them out of the aluminum package from Costco (or Sam's Club) into one of her baking dishes before the camera was turned on and she put them in the oven.  That would also feed into her pretense of being a good cook.

By the way, Costco's enchiladas are delicious!!!

Maybe but this is before the marriage seriously fell apart (odd that its also one of the first, if not the episode where Caryn appears.)

I've actually been struck by how affectionate both Amy and Matt are in earlier seasons. The cracks were there but it doesn't seem irreparable ass of season seven. Discovery plus is well worth the 5.99.

Another observation - the timeline often seems intentionally obfuscated. In order, Mike dies and Matt goes to Iraq, but some of the Iraq stuff airs before the Mike Dies episode and then there's "lost episodes" where Mike appears after his death.

I'd also forgotten just how scary the tractor on the high bridge that was built in season seven and disappeared after all the near accidents.

In season 10, Episode 22, Holiday Surprise, guess who is an employee at Pumpkin Season? Brittany Chandler. This is 2010 so before the divorce decree.

Caryn makes her appearance on the farm right around when Mike Detjen dies. The endless house remodel is where the marital cracks really appear but seasons 8, 9 and 10 start having the "we're at different places" talk. Its very clear there's problems

i hadn't that much noticed their chewing habits until I read about it here. So I really noticed this week. And my thinking is that if it is disability related, why have them eating so often on the show?

It's not a disability. He some times eats w/his mouth closed but 90 percent of the time it's open because both his parents eat w/their mouths open too. His parents didn't teach them table manners. Watching him eat is discusting

Amy is trying on white wedding gowns.  I think white gowns should be for first weddings only.  Didn't a white gown stand for virginity?  Of course, there aren't many virginal brides any more.

From the web:  "The most traditional color for wedding dresses today, white is ideal for a bride who loves tradition. It symbolizes purity, innocence, light, virginity and positivity. It's the quintessential bridal look."

Okay, we're 0 for 5 on symbolism.

The wedding gown industry would instantly go bankrupt if only virgins and never-marrieds stopped wearing white wedding gowns.  I feel like wearing a white wedding gown for a second wedding is just one more thing that the world at large does that Amy's getting picked apart for. It seems to me that many people disapprove of her for existing.

I've never been on board with the whole virginity thing - yes, folks Amy isn't a virgin, Matt's penis made the journey more than a few times while they were married, so does that mean she's too whorey, slutty, trashy to wear a white dress... a tradition that didn't exist  until Victorian times and seems to encourage humanity to slut shame women for the crime of engaging in intercourse before marriage?

Thats not who I am. Personally I wouldn't bother with a big wedding even for my first but I have no issue with some pregnant 14 year old wearing white if they want, and I don't have a problem with a close to 60 year old divorced woman wearing white either. It's just a color and virginity is highly overrated.

Well Well, the bloom is off the rose.  Chris was pissed as hell in that scene where he's bitching to Amy about her "stuff" being all over the table where he had cleaned.  That's foreboding if I ever saw any.  In my opinion why get married.    If I were betting, I'd bet they don't last.   But good luck and all that to them! 🥂

Can't wait for new season!

I have nothing against her wearing white, what I think would be ridiculous is a big frilly Gypsy wedding gown on a near 60 year old grandmother.  It will be interesting to see her choice of dress.

They only showed a blip of the top of that wedding dress she had on but I loved the look of it on her. I hope she does a top like that and an A-line style on the bottom. And please, Amy please, buy some nice shoes! Don't wear clodhoppers or flip flops! She looks pretty good in the scenes above. I am here for the Matt and Chris bonding while Amy squirms! I am glad she has Chris around now to open her up to a different way of reacting to situations.

Looking forward to seeing Jackson and Lyla (I would totally call her LylaBelle if she were mine).

I didn't have the sound on, what was freaking them about the picture(?) at the end?

I don't know if this should have a spoiler tag, but I'll err on the side of caution:

Spoiler

It was a Valentine's Day card signed by Jackson, Lilah and "Baby No. 3". Filmed before the miscarriage.

Kudos to Chris for standing up for himself with regard to lack of space. They need to address this NOW, because it will only get worse after they marry.

I think most women just want to wear a "princess' looking dress for their wedding. Whether it's the first wedding or the 8th. Most wedding extravaganzas seem to be about the bride. Not my cup of tea but I don't care what color Amy wears.

They're an odd couple but it just might be a good fit. I'll keep watching! Lol.

Just my personal opinion and of course Amy can choose whatever she wants but I think the white princess poofy gowns look best on a young bride.

I'm a little younger than Amy and if I were marrying I wouldn't want a big skirt, sequins, poofy princess gown and tiara veil etc, I'd choose something more sophisticated, clean lines and not a lot of bling and just some type of flower or feather pinned into my hair no tiaras

The big hoop skirt gowns look best on a taller person, I think Amy would kind of disappear in a gown with too much skirt and hoops.

I think Amy would look very nice in something like this..

Here's her wedding dress with Matt and it looks cute on her

I agree about a puffy dress but the top was attractive on that dress she was shown in.  Hopefully someone will be influencing her decision in the most flattering silhouette , those wedding photos last a lifetime.

It as pretty  funny clip of Chris teasing Amy about being between her old husband and new husband.  That would be a nightmare for me but I’m not being paid to live my life on tv.

He agreed to an alcohol diversion program after the first arrest, and the charges were dropped upon completion of the program.

In the second case, the deputy claimed that he was driving outside the travel lane after leaving a bar parking area. According to a witness who was there when the incident happened, the bar parking lot was a meeting spot. He also claimed that he did not notice Roloff drinking that night.

Roloff pled not guilty to the second arrest, and the judge agreed and found him not guilty of drunken driving.

The point being - he's not being accused of drinking without some evidence of a drinking problem.  His first DUI arrest, he got a first timer gift by attending an alcohol diversion program rather than have it go on his record.  So under the letter of the law, he's not been convicted of drunk driving.

But are we who think he has some issues with alcohol just blowing it out our asses accusing a stone cold sober man who never drinks a drop and who has never ever been arrested for any sort of substance and abuse and who never ever admitted to having a drug and alcohol issue in the 1980s?

I mean, there is some smoke with this particular fire, and I don't know how ok I would be with "well, he went to an alcohol diversion program so he's technically not guilty of DUI" if he ran down someone in a future accident.

eta - Matt also refused a breathalyzer test  in his second DUI go around, which lost him his license for a year.

Also - Matt references his use of cocaine and drinking excessively in his book Against Tall Odds.

Sorry, can't get behind blaming others for one's addiction problem. If Matt has a drinking problem - and I am willing to concede he may not - he is responsible for his drinking and doesn't get a pass because Amy was so awful, he is blameless for his own behavior and bears no responsibility for his choices. If he has a drinking problem, he is the one choosing to drink.

If he was so unhappy he drank, he could have left her many years ago. And did it ever occur to anyone that maybe Matt's drinking led to Amy not being so pleasant? I've lived with drunks - they aren't pleasant, and Matt's possible issues do predate his marriage.

I wonder if they have a prenuptial or is it winner takes all?

Will the marriage last if the show ends?

I never in a million years thought they would marry.

I guess it’s go Amy!
