They gave everyone their earned moments in this episode and by golly were they all well written and acted.

Marcus spitting in the demon's face and saying he wasn't dying for the church but for Him? Chills.

Tomas owning all his mistakes but saying he's learned from them and is still here and willing to fight and owning that demon. I may have wept when he uttered 'the power of Christ compels you!' and threw Pazuzu across the room.

Angela still rattling around in there and finally telling the demon to 'come at me , bro' and leaving it a pile of smashed goo in the recesses of her mind even as it broke her back but not her spirit. 

That the entire Rance family rallied was amazing. They had been stretched and pushed in ways unimaginable but when Casey stayed back to help what was left of her mother and then Henry and Kat came back, too? Damn.

Bennet. Dude. Neck snapping with his hands tied and bleeding out.

Marcus nailing Maria for the sad Renfeld that she is. Of course she's the last one standing.

This is the first finale in a long time that lived up to the hype, settled all the major questions in a satisfying and left things open for a S2 in a compelling way. Just amazingly well done.

This is a cast that deserved a SAG best ensemble nomination and Ben Daniels for an Emmy nomination. It's a crime neither will happen.

I love this show and its talented cast. I know the odds aren't good, but damn I want another season. I am so thrilled that Bennett is alive! And he is still his grumpy adorable self. Marcus saved Pope Sebastian/Bruce Davidson. I had my doubts about Tomas, but he found his faith and saved Angela who is now paralyzed. I don't think that is a good idea that he become an exorcist though. However, the demons continue to plot so it is good that he and Marcus will be there to stand against them.

Casey, embrace life, it is a precious gift that you earned with your courage. She is so sweet. I am happy that the Rances are experiencing momentary peace. They deserve it after all they have been through.

Agreed. This show was impressive from start to finish. I hope we get a season two and it is a damn shame its not getting any buzz.

An impressive ten hour story. Hope it gets another season.

I was a bit squeamish with the hammer scene. Wasn't hugely necessary.

Tomas grew up. He wasn't an exorcist (I guess according to Paranormal Witness, you go to Rome to learn) but fought back with his faith. Owned his mistakes.

I did like the use of metaphor rooms for the inner workings of the mind.

I also did like the Rance family coming together to help Angela. They've been to Hell and back and still rose to the challenge.

Nice to see Bennett again. He, Marcus, and Tomas should start the boys wearing collars club and taking out evil.

Marcus taking out the corrupt priest was interesting to watch. The Pope probably had no idea.

The show's questions were answered, the story was tied up, but left a lot of room for more. Maria, the one that none of the demons really wanted, is still standing and now has a military friend. Nice end to a good story and hopefully more to come!

Marcus, Tomas, and Bennett, kicking evil's ass!  I never thought all of the hero priests would live, so I'm very happy.

I wonder how many people turned the channel too soon, and missed that Angela's alive.

Who would have thought (in the beginning) that Kat would be such a self-sacrificing, loving sister and daughter?

They wrapped things up wonderfully, so one and done, or a second season would work.  Good work.

Shallow note:  Whoever the costume designer is, they should give tips to the rest of the world about dressing a plus-sized woman.  That red dress was flattering and gorgeous on Maria.

I'm bummed because American Horror Story, which gets more ridiculous and laughable every season, will continue on in its torture-porn way.  Meanwhile a quality horror show like this one can't find an audience.

This episode was excellent.  It was worthy of the premiere.  I loved that Bennett is alive.  I loved that Tomas became the priest I loved in the beginning.  He found his faith.  Marcus was amazing.  I loved how he told simon that he was doing this for God.  You could see Simon realizing that Marcus was beyond his ability to corrupt.  

I hope this show gets another season.  It was well acted and well written.

I don't really have much to add on to what everyone else has posted. The finale was great, and I'm going to miss this show. I'm so happy that all three priests survived! I loved the shot of Marcus and Tomas sitting together at the diner. At first, I was afraid that Pazuzu was going to be left in the recesses of Angela's mind, but I think Tomas exorcized it for good. The only storyline I wanted to know more about was Maria and the Friars. Why did she want to be possessed and why did the group want to kill the pope? What was their end game? Maybe they said what it was, but I missed it. Also, why did the high-pitched noise affect everyone except the friar group and Marcus?

Oh, this was excellent. No wonder Simon couldn't corrupt Marcus; Marcus works for God, not the Church. You go, Marcus. And Tomas. They should train Casey; she'd be a badass.

Why aren't critics gushing over this left and right? I do not get it.

Finally God and goodness wins! I'm down for that. Usually in these types of movies and shows divinity never overcomes evil. It was great to see it here. 

I still haven't seen all the episodes but did watch the finale and thought it was excellent. Pretty much what everyone has said is what made it great. 

That said, I think this made for a good series finale. Some shows only need one season and when they try to do more is when things go off the rails. For that reason, I don't know if I want to see them continue, especially if it means Angela and her family will be further tortured. They have been through enough and I like that final image of them being in a good place, a peaceful and "safe" place. They deserve it. 

Now if the story shifted to Tomas, Bennett and Marcus fighting Maria and the Friars and of course Tomas training to become a full time exorcist I might watch. Otherwise, probably not.

There were times this show kind of lost me and I planned to move on from it, but I'm glad I tuned back in. Overall it turned out to be pretty good series.

As an Exorcist obsessive I never expected much from this show but it pleasantly surprised me with its faithfulness to the original text.

Really hope it gets a renewal, but if not it was a solid addition to the canon and Geena Davis gave a great turn as Regan. Plus, mmph, Ben Daniels.

It so was! She looked absolutely georgeous. Even if she was dressed in blood red sacrificial lamb dress.

The Pope should have an inkling about what this was as the corrupt priest mentioned to Marcus that before the Pope was the Pope they had figured early in his career that he would become th Pope and the Friars tried to reach out to him to have him join them and offered him  'eternity' and he turned his back on them. They took the rejection badly so they moved to plan B to kill him when he was Pope to make an example of him. 

 

Echo the love that all three priests lived. Tomas and Marcus walking off into the night all badass was a great image to leave them on.

Also realized that they played on the trinity aspects with the three rooms and Marcus, Tomas, and Angela, Angela, Tomas, and her family vs the demon, and Bennett, Tomas, and Marcus all falling into the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost imagery.

Still in awe of how they let Marcus underline the distinction that the church is a man made construct that can be corrupted and isn't what he's dying for. He's sacrificing - willingly-  for God. Period. Ben Daniel's has been amazing in crafting a complex gay warrior priest who is resolute in his spiritual convictions. Can you recall another character like this on cable let alone broadcast TV?

It would never happen but if warrior Exorcist priests, Bennett, Tomas, and Marcus could crossover with Supernatural's Winchester brothers with a dash of John Constantine it might be the best show ever.

Very interesting article from the show runner about the ideas for season 2 and the development of S1. He really was invested in Angela and Casey having their own agency in saving themselves and makes a lovely point that it wasn't just Tomas or Angela or her family that saved her but all three in combination that were able to defeat this particular demon. Had the family left as they originally wanted, their fear would've allowed the demon to win out over them and ultimately Angela. They like Angela would've been looking over their shoulder for the rest of their lives. Casey put aside her fear to face the demon again and try to save her mother. Facing your fear was a huge part of both Tomas and Angela's ability to win in this situation. He also discusses how it *was* because of Angela being previously possessed that she had built up defense pockets which is why full integration hadn't taken place.

Apparently Maria's demon isn't happy it was forced to take her as a host so it's not a happy integration.

Yeah, the way they let Regan dispatch the demon was great. Seeing it reduced to nothing and begging for her was something else after all these years.

I had a feeling about Maria. I also suspect there was/is much more planned for the Pope since they cast Bruce Davison to do nothing but sit in that limo.

YES on  the bolded. I was skeptical going in on this show but it totally exceeded my expectations. I agree they did a great job buttoning it up, but I would love a second (third, fourth?) season.

I couldn't figure out why the screeching noise incapacitated everyone except the bad priests, Marcus and the Pope. Plus no one except the Pope saw Marcus kill that priest? So odd no film was rolling. I was surprised Marcus walked free out of that situation since no one knew about the Pope murder plot so Marcus looked the murderer (which, I guess, he was). Then Demon Angela said she couldn't let any of her family die or there would be too many questions ... and she's going to TEAR OFF BOTH OF HER HUSBAND'S ARMS? WTH! That would raise some serious coroner/homicide police questions. And the hammer-to-the-knee thing ... she could have pulled that blow and not struck full-force, right? I might have tried turning the hammer on "mom" instead. Might not have ended well, but those demons need to be talked back to! LOVE Marcus, he ruled this show. And I was totally wrong about Bennet being dead. Although I couldn't understand one word he said, so I don't know if he's Good Bennet or Bad.

Hoping for a season 2, more Marcus, more Tomas, more Marcus. Did I mention more Marcus?

I'm not sure I agree it was impressive at the start - it took me awhile to get into it. I think that might have been part of the problem with the ratings, too many people tried the first episode, didn't care for it, and didn't watch the rest. I'm not sure how they could have improved it, though. I still wonder if it might have been more popular if they had promoted it as a direct sequel to the book/movie from the start rather than leaving that as a surprise halfway through. I know a lot of people appreciated the surprise, but the bottom line is not enough people watched the show.

To say nothing of Scream Queens. I can't believe Fox had the colossal gall to run a promo for that piece of crap show right after this one ended. Like they're in any way comparable.

I'm just glad they wrapped up the story and didn't leave us hanging because the chance of another season is slim to none.

Agree with this. But I was one of those people who appreciated the surprise. So little on television surprises me anymore. But, like you, I wish it had been better promoted and found more of an audience.

This finale was everything I could hope for, but then again, I've loved this show from the first minute it aired. The last 15 minutes of the finale had me yelling and yaying and fist-pumping the air. I FREAKING FLOVE THIS SHOW! I would absolutely watch a show starring Tomas, Marcus and (yay! he's alive) Father Bennet. Please, please, please bring our show back. The power of Christ compels you!

I saw that there was film of the event at end, but it didn't show Marcus killing Simon. Maybe because was all supernatural, the film didn't pick it up. Only explanation that I can come with.

Kat was amazing! I remember when she was taunting her father at the dinner table in one of the first episodes. I would have never expected such a brave and beautiful heart.

I agree that the red dress was very flattering on Maria.

I thought the sound might have interfered with the electronics.  It definitely interfered with anyone holding a camera.  Any camera held or directed by a person was likely dropped or no longer focusing on the pope.

It's also possible they simply couldn't find Marcus after the fact. He's sort of off the grid.

I noticed the red dress too and agree they did a great job. There is something compelling about Kirsten Fitzgerald; the first time I saw her I had to rush to IMDB.com to see where I'd seen her before. She is eminently watchable.

I had figured Father Bennett was still alive because they only showed him being bagged over the head, and the bad guys wanted answers, not a dead body.  Plus, we didn't see a dead body, or a coroner's gurney, or a comment about Fr. B. being deceased.  Plus again, Kurt Egyiawan was listed as being in the case of Eps 9 and 10.  So I was so happy to see Father Bennett alive with Father Marcus.

Father Marcus totally owned this show.  He was the man, The Exorcist, and Ben Daniels (have I said this before?) is just stunning.  I love watching him walk that walk in the scenes.

The only thing I'm so sad about is that Angela has been left paralyzed.  I'm really praying for a Season 2 so that she can get some medical (or divine) intervention and get out of the wheelchair.  It's bad enough she lost her mother, and everything she went through before in Georgetown and then again in Chicago.  Geena Davis' nuances in playing Angela and then Regan/Angela and then Pazuzu/Angela were subtly brilliant.

This show is so quality, especially for horror. I hope beyond hope it gets another season and picks up more of an audience. I was soooo looking forward to Geena Davis playing being exorcised and it was fantastic. I only wish it was a little longer because I'd been anticipating that little acting coup since the demon integrated.

It's funny because on the one hand I really want to credit Fox for trying something that's so high concept, so different and so smart. On the other hand I think the show might have fared better on a cable network. Fox sort of buried the show on a Friday night and didn't do much in the way of promoting it. I think if this had been on Showtime or Starz it would have gotten a lot more buzz. I think someone at Fox recognized the quality of it but the network on the whole was probably a little scared of it because it was so different and potentially controversial. And those qualities would probably have helped it thrive on cable.

Love the finale.  The Rance family, esp. Angela, gets some closure.

I like the teacher/student relationship that's building between Tomas and Marcus.

Yay!  Bennett's not dead.  I want him to continue to be the voice of the Church when he has to track them down.  Tomas and Marcus are going rogue, so Bennett should be there to bicker with Marcus.

There's enough for an anthology.  Keep this show going, Fox.

Finally watched the finale, and loved it. especially the focus on the priests. As others already stated, psyched Fr. Bennett is alive, and am curious to follow Maria and the friars' story. I'm fine with leaving the Rance family alone. I don't see them being necessary in a second season. If there is a god, I hope we get season 2.

I agree with you and all the other posters who commented about this.  I noticed her costuming from the very start and liked it, being a bigger gal myself.  Didn't even think about the sacrificial lamb red until the poster above mentioned it. 

Was heartbroken that Casey's dancing career seems to be over.  (Or, perhaps there's a chance she was just recovering?)  I also completely missed the fact that Reagan's back was broken until I saw her in the wheelchair at the end. 

I don't have anything new to add, other than to add my voice to the chorus of those begging for another season.  

One more thing -- I have always been quite taken with the opening credits.  Beautiful.
