Nice little ep.  I liked the call back to the books with the idea of Sherlock thinking the sun revolved around the earth, though this softened it a bit by making it a kid's mistake.  'I was 8 when I made that mistake; you chose to put on that vest this morning' is a good petulant retort.

I liked the vest. Not everyone needs to dress as boringly as Sherlock does.

Honestly, I never thought about accepting an award as being something you do to inspire others, unless you're making an inspiring speech along with it. I can see how it might work with a sobriety chip, but I don't really know that I think Joan was right about it working that way for Sherlock and Joan getting a medal from the NYPD. Love Gregson, though.

I kept waiting for Checkov's mistress to go off in the last act, and the murder was going to be nothing about the paper at all, but that the husband/boss found out about the affair and killed the guy for that. Kudos, show, for suckering me with this week's red herring.

I usually hate Joan's clothing, but I liked her dress this week. Love the platonic love between Sherlock and Joan.

Did I forget what happened with Sherlock's autistic girlfriend, or did the show drop that story completely? This show writes relationships that I find interesting. I find that funny, since it's supposedly not a relationship show. Many other shows write relationships I find annoying and a waste of time, so I was hoping S's gf would stick around.

I was annoyed that they never considered that the astroid article's influence wouldn't make a sizable number of the public withdraw money from banks, stocks, etc. to turn into tangible trading capital, like chickens or something, and the dead guy and his friends who knew there was no danger would buy up a lot of the tanked stocks.

I loved the dress, as usual.

ETA: I guess I'll have to go online to get a good look at the two t-shirts and other clothes she wore this episode.

Fiona appeared in 3 out of 24 episodes last season and was mentioned in perhaps a couple more.  Unless something changes, I'm assuming that Sherlock and Fiona are happily dating/having loads of sex and that all is well.  Happiness/contentment can be a little boring to show.  Fiona will likely appear in person when there's some problem arising in the relationship or elsewhere.

As someone who watched The Mentalist for far longer than he should have, I was pleased to see Owain Yeoman in a role with a bit more flair. It was also nice to hear him in something a bit closer to his native accent.

Thank you!  I knew he was on a long-time show that I liked, but couldn't for the life of me remember which one.  I thought he did great, and I wished he would have had more screen time.  Loved when he said he would explain in "layman's terms" and Joan was laughing her ass off.  He didn't really come off as the blow hard that Sherlock described.

Off topic:  I always thought Owain Yeoman would be a dead ringer for Mr. Incredible if they ever did a live action version.

Loved the shout-out to canon but the hallway scene made that episode for me. Holmes came probably never closer to declare to Watson his (platonic) feelings for her. Wonderfully written, acted and shot with both of them sitting on the old sofa not looking at each other - I might need that as my new screensaver. I think Watson's point about accepting the chip or the award was that you acknowledge the group effort behind it. It sounds counter-intuitive at first but Gregson did also stress the aspect of team work in his speech.

Having lived with a lumberjack for 8 years (and 2 more children), I can attest to poison ivy (or, in our case, poison oak) being easily deposited on furniture (eventually I started making him take off most of his clothes outside, put them in a bucket, and then I would don rubber gloves and wash them in ammonia — in case anyone wants to know how to deal with this problem). So I would assume even if the killer was, as Joan or Sherlock said, one of the few who are not effected by poison ivy, others who sat on the couch would have been effected. I wish they had included one as a clue.

I liked the astronomer guy's vest too. It looked like something Neil DeGrasse Tyson would wear, and that man can do no wrong.

That's kind of what I was expecting too. I found the case a little hard to follow but I really liked the part about Gregson trying to get Sherlock and Joan included in the citation. The scene with Sherlock and Joan sitting on that little bench under the stairs, discussing the pros and cons of recognition and what it means to each of them, was really good. These are the moments that keep me watching the show, rather than the case of the week.

Just wondering if Joan waking up while Sherlock was trying to determine where she might need a poison ivy salve tops last week Sherlock playing "Gimme Some Lovin'" on the violin as the most disturbing way he's woken her up.

My personal vote for creepiest way to wake her up goes to having Clyde crawl up her bedsheets wearing a tea-cozy (IIRC). Nothing against Clyde but anything crawling through my bed when I'm asleep would scare the beejesus out of me.

Did anybody else notice that the lakeside cabin where the scientist stayed is the same cabin Alison and Noah lived in on The Affair? As a major house-porn addict, I admit was excited to see it again, but I had to laugh — is there only one cabin in New York that every show uses?

Damn, Elementary!  You get two actors I know involved in the main case (Richard Thomas as the victim's boss and Owain Yeoman and Julius Kent), and not to mention Gordon Clapp as the Deputy Chief, and the killer ends up being someone I don't know!  Nice!  I really thought it was going to be Richard Thomas' character, because he found out about the affair, so this was a rare time the show got one over me.  I did enjoy Owain as Julius (I'm use to him in more serious roles), although I'm almost surprised they didn't just get Neil DeGrasse Tyson to play himself.

The squad getting an award and Sherlock's aversion to getting any recognition was an interesting enough "character story."  Really liked the scene between him and Joan in the hallway.  Those two really are what makes this show better then a lot of other procedurals; some I ended up dropping.  But I enjoy and am invested so much into Sherlock and Joan, that I don't see myself ever leaving.

I like how this season is continuing to naturally work in Bell and Gregson, so they have more to do compared to past seasons, but don't feel like they are taking anything away from Sherlock and Joan.

I think it would have been tough to build a backstory where Holmes and Tyson knew one another for a long time.

FWIW, the killer was still a relatively name-ey guest star, just not the namiest name of them. Rob McClure's a musical theater guy, been on Broadway, etc. I'm pretty sure he even had a Tony nomination for the Charlie Chaplin musical he was in that changed its name a few times.

No, I don't think so. The whole thing was just a red-herring albeit one that allowed the writers to show us that Watson's observational skills are on Sherlock level by now.

I believe in episode 1 or 2, Joan and Sherlock were in the kitchen. Joan was washing and handling vegetables as they discussed the COTW and she moves over to deposit it in Clyde's little habitat. He is shown approaching it in a quick shot.

I really liked the way they handled the last scene.  I had a feeling Sherlock would show up, after the scene where Joan explained her thoughts on the reason for sharing the commendation.  At the end, though, when everyone started clapping, I thought "Don't let him clap" and he didn't.  The characters are so well observed and played.

I definitely thought the astronomer's vest seemed to be a takeoff on one that Neil deGrasse Tyson has worn on the air, though Dr. Tyson's is classier I think.  It would have been amusing to have him play himself, or someone like him, but this way I guess Sherlock's frenemy can reappear as an irregular, if that's what he is.

Me too (both in watching The Mentalist too long, and happy to see Owain).

My favorite moment was the look on Sherlock's face when Julius referenced the movie Armageddon. Joan got it but it was clearly a complete non-sequitor for Sherlock, and I loved that no one bothered to explain it to him.
