S04.E19: After You've Gone

Recommended Posts

Quote

Rayna makes a last-ditch effort to protect her oldest daughter from the perils that befall young artists. Juliette reunites with her "Shenandoah Girl" co-star Noah West on the Oscar campaign trail, where she meets Kesha, who guest stars as herself. Elsewhere, Scarlett grows wary of Gunnar's budding friendship with Autumn Chase, Layla fears falling into obscurity before her career even takes off, and Will suffers a devastating loss.

This sounds awful. Kesha and Derek Hough almost sound like high notes, and that's ridiculous.

I can't believe Rayna is still going there. What will it take for her to stop being such a damn doormat for her hell-spawn daughter to trample all over? Stop trying to 'help'. Let. Her. Sink. I seriously want Rayna to grow a spine and say 'good luck and hope it was worth destroying your family - you're dead to me.'

And can't Will catch a damn break for just one week?

I believe there's a typo in that summary; the end of the last sentence should read: "... and Will suffers yet another devastating loss. Again. Some more."

Good God this show is stupid.

Can Cash and her father please get hit by a tour bus already?

Layla is ridiculous and Avery needs to run the other damn direction as fast as he can. You already have a kid to raise, dude. You don't need another bratty child in your life. Especially one with crazy eyes who's a damn liar. Avery, you're an idiot for not seeing the crazy that is happening right in front of you.

Why the hell did they dig Derek Hough back up? My God, he's a bad actor. Stick with the dancing and choreographing, dude.

Hayden was hilarious at the bar, though. The toothpick cracked me up.

Will's dad is still a dick. Too little, too late there at the end, pal.

The surplus redhead sucks. Just shut up already.

Gunnar is an idiot. Scarlet is an idiot. I hope they become the Exes musically soon, too, because they're not writing great songs together anymore anyway.

I wonder how many people in that AA meeting were like, "Dude, an alcoholic owning a bar really isn't that great of an idea, anyway, and the name really sucked... so, yeah."

Of course Cash is going to push for the big bad in NYC. Give me a break. Out of control tour bus with no brakes. Now. It can take out Maddie, too.

Jesus, it's about time Rayna (kind of) talked to Daphne about all of this. The kid's sister turned out to be a giant asshole, her step-dad is an asshole, her mother is an asshole, and she's in danger of turning into an asshole. She should run away with Aunt Tandy before it's too late.

Of course Deacon is about to get drunk. Of course he is. Here's a thought: How about the jackass not be a jackass for once? I don't even care if he and Rayna ever get back together. Those two are both too stupid to deserve happiness.

Juliette needs to be happy without a man in her life. She has a kid to focus on, and a career that is going pretty well, she doesn't need a man to be complete. Oh wait, I forgot this is Nashville.

Oh Elton. WHY?

Juliette: unlikely voice of reason.  She was exactly right that Maddie's situation was completely different than what Juliette dealt with.  And having Glenn help Maddie was sweet (not that Maddie deserves it).

Loved Glenn shutting Cash up a few times.  And calling Layla out on the tip to the paparazzi.

Luke: another unlikely voice of reason.  Go Luke!

The Will story was pretty heavy handed.  But I'll take his father FINALLY being nice to him at the end.  Can he please get to have some fun soon?

Rayna should just let Maddie fuck up her life for a while.  Forgive Deacon.  Focus on Daphne for a bit.  By the end of the episode, Rayna seemed to get it.

Dear Deacon, you did not do everything right. Stop rewriting history and don't poison The Beverly's liver. And telling a room full of recovering alcoholics that you're losing your bar probably won't get you sympathy.

Maddie Conrad/Clayborne/Jaymes please walk everywhere in New York. Take Cash and Frankie with you. Buses and taxi cabs are fine to walk in front of. In fact, they want you to. And if I never again have to hear that horrid song she's been singing, I will consider myself a lucky woman.

Will, great stuff this week. And damn, I really like Luke. I feel like I wandered into opposite land.

Avery, rather JJ, is quite the guitarist. I liked his performance.

I'm not sure why I still watch this show as I wish half the characters would go the way of Beverly.  It was pretty awesome of Juliette to send Glenn to Maddie's showcase.  I wish the dumb girl would have listened to him, I mean anyone with an ounce of the maturity Maddie claims to have would have seen the red flags Cash was throwing out.  Deacon, don't crawl back in a bottle, just sign away your part of the bar and be happy to be done with that asshole.  I figured from the get go that Layla had arranged that paparazzi incident, so it wasn't surprising when Glenn brought it up.  Chris Carmack was adorable with the baby! That was probably the one good scene in the show.  I'm glad Will went to his mom's funeral anyway and that his dad seems to be coming around somewhat.  I stopped caring about Scarlett and Gunnar a long time ago.  They can still sing in the episodes as the music is good, but they've been in storyline hell for awhile now and it just keeps getting more boring.  I'm finding myself liking Luke lately, I'm glad he's in Will's corner.  Cash and her greasy dad should go play in traffic, so maybe instead of attempting to hit the bottle again, Deacon can just put a dollar on a fishing line (albeit a fishing line a hundred yards long), and hang it over the freeway and watch them chase it until, whoopsie, here comes Reba's tour bus to flatten them!

Maddie's song was awful and she looked awful. Yeah, go to New York to be a country artist. Typically, country artists move TO Nashville. Whatever as long as Maddie and Cash disappear, I don't care.

Rayna, you're a dummy. Why would you ask someone to sign your entitled daughter? Let her crash and burn.

Let's not do the Deacon relapse again. Can't they at least let them be happy for just a bit?

Somehow this show has turned me into a Luke fan.

There was one moment when I  liked Frankie.  he said he's changing the name of the bar.  The Beverly no more!  Of course, given the weird bar names, he'll probably name it the Cash Pot or something as endearing since he is so enamored of his heinous daughter.

This show is becoming harder and harder for me to watch. Ridiculous soap opera drama and bad writing... oh and someone please get Derek Hough off this show. One of the worst actors I've ever seen in my life. My god he's worse than his sister!

Okay, I just read somewhere that Derek got really sick during the filming of tonight's and next weeks episode and almost completely lost his voice. I noticed his voice was very hoarse, especially during the bedroom scene. I'll cut him some slack.

However, I still cannot believe how bad some of the writing has gotten on this show. I've seen better writing in teenage girls fanfics before. No joke!

Enjoy New York, Maddie. God. I never thought I could dislike a character as much as I do. It's like negative 200 with this girl.

Anyways, Layla is stupid. Glen knows what she did. He is not stupid. So, now that Layla can't get revenge on Juliet anymore, she is now using Avery as leverage to become more famous. I doubt very much in the real world, this would help her career at all. Also, the sad look on Avery's face when he saw the pictures of Juliet and Derek Hough was sad. But whatever. He better not use this feeling to keep Juliet away from Cadence. Or at least, I hope he doesn't. I'm still holding out for a Luke/Juliet hookup.

Luke is my favorite character on this show. And I'm slowly realizing I never really not liked him. Rayna did treat him badly. She dumped him on THE MORNING OF THEIR WEDDING! And granted, he handled the Jeff situation poorly, making Colt lie and keep the truth for a long time, but I think he was an awkward position. But he is kind of the best right now.

All Deacon has ever done on this show is whine, I'm slowly realizing. Seriously. I don't think I've ever really shipped him and Rayna, just shipped them so that the show would stop making him whine and look at bottles. Also, way to ruin AA for everybody else, you jerk. I hated that the AA leader was like, "Come back man, we're here for you!" when he crapped all over it. Seriously, he ruined some other person's AA moment with his stupid stuff and wow... I suppose a lot of people may be like that at those meetings, but really.. Deacon took some other persons moment and made it ALL ABOUT HIM AND HOW MUCH THE MESSAGE OF AA SUCKS. Like.. ugh. I can't.

And Frankie, Deacon saved your bar. I guess Frankie likes it when the place is a dive and making no money.

I did like Tandy's talk with Daphne. But Maddie isn't the only one who wants to sing, Daphne does too. I really hope that isn't dropped just because Maddie turned into a terrible human being and left her sister in the dust.

I can't even with this show anymore, you guys. It's killing me.

Juliette has become one of the sanest and nicest people on the show.  She's letting Avery make his own choices in terms of Layla, the she devil; she tried to help Rayna get Maddie back; and she sent Glenn out to keep an eye on Maddie.  She's stopped being self destructive.  Yay!  (I'm not sure I think her roll in the hay with Derek is her wisest choice at this point, but I can't say that I blame her!)

I just can't with Deacon's pity parties. "I lost my sister, I lost my daughter, I lost my wife, and I lost my bar." And just think about where you would be if you hadn't gotten sober, Debbie Downer. No, everything isn't coming up roses right now, but things would be a lot worse if you had been drinking. You never would have married Rayna and she never would have let you near Maddie. And who is he to shit on everyone else in that AA meeting? If they believe things are going to get better, he doesn't need to contradict that. And hey, maybe THEIR lives are going to get better because they're staying sober and being positive. Being a whiny drunk certainly isn't going to make anything get better.

As soon as Layla dragged Avery into the alley and started eating his face, I knew she was up to something so I wasn't at all surprised when I saw a single paparazzo. Her nonchalant attitude after the photos were published sealed the deal for me. She is a totally negative person so for her to say things like, "We should just make the best of it!" was setting off every warning light in my head.

Poor Will. When he got that phone call, I knew someone was sick or dead and that he would be blamed for it because his gayness kills all the good things in life (at least according to his dad). His dad's reaction at the end of the episode was too little too late for me, but I guess at least Will's relationship is now .00000001% better. Maybe one day they can work up to having a meal together without his dad talking about what a huge disappointment Will is to him.

On a related note, I'm glad that Luke finally fired his not so secretly homophobic employee. That guy has been side eyeing Will since he showed up and he hasn't been very subtle about not wanting Luke to have anything to do with Will.

Cash definitely has some sort of agenda. Based on the evil eye she gave Glenn when he mentioned that managers and lawyers have different functions, I guess she wants to be Maddie's manager. I love that Juliette called Maddie to have coffee and try to talk her out of all these rash decisions she's making, but I really wish that she had been in town so that she could attend the showcase and give her some advice. As much as Maddie looks at Cash with stars in her eyes, I don't think that Maddie or Cash could have fought off the tag team of Glenn and Juliette advising her to go with Tupelo.

People who I want on an exploding tour bus: Cash, Frankie, and Autumn.

This. I said the same thing earlier, but I think the show wants us to feel bad for Deacon here and more or less, I feel bad for the other people in that AA meeting who had to deal with his hissy fit that day. Like, really.

I don't know what Cash's deal is at this point. I really thought she was in love with Maddie but I now think it's more or less an evil plot with both Frankie and Cash to ruin Deacon and Rayna's lives and then this show is slowly becoming too much like a lifetime movie from the 90s and I realize I want the days back when Juliette was "staying up late at night, crying black mascara tears!" Not whatever this show has turned into.

I'm probably the minority, but I actually liked the episode.

Juliette - Yay for being a good person & showing your growth by trying to help out Maddie in a positive way. We all know she is mending her heart and will eventually reconcile with Avery. If we have to have someone around at least Derek Hough is nice eye candy and his character seems nice to her. I wish she would have just gone to the event with him from the first place and we could have saved money on that extra.

Maddie - needs to crash & burn, but I did like that Rayna made one last attempt to help her daughter out. She loves her daughter and wants her going down a good path. I can respect her trying to keep Cash's claws out of her until the last possible moment. Good luck in NY, Maddie.

Daphne - well I was concerned I was gonna have to hear her whine again. Honestly remember when the girls were just adorable and sung beautiful songs? I can't with all this YA melodrama. I thought I wanted Aunt Tansy back, but I think I was wrong.

Deacon - I love Deacon but it is wearing on me that the writers keep on making him stare at a bottle. I know he is an alcoholic, can we just have him do something else or just not show it. I didn't need that last seconds.

S/G - I am over them. I want them together as a couple, I love their chemistry & think they make a good match. Except for one major flaw, they never communicate. I get that it's a show & miscommunication is how you create drama, but S/G take passive-aggressive miscommunication to a whole other level.

Will & Luke - I'm loving their storyline, it feels authentic. I do really wish poor Will would catch a break though.

Layla - well that was a pretty obvious plot twist. Saw that one a mile away. I am really glad though that they are bringing back cut-throat Layla. I feel bad for Avery, but sorry buddy the writing was on the wall. She is gonna burn you with her drama even worse than Juliette.

Avery - Well thank goodness they finally let JJ sing!! He is amazing, I wish we heard more from him. His character is dumb as bricks sometimes, but I love to hear him sing.

It was a enjoyable episode... no where near as good as it should be. I desperately want them to get new writers and a different direction next season, but all in all it was not as bad as I anticipated.

Oh, we all just need to hang in there and hope the show gets renewed.  Zwick & Herskovitz will be the new showrunners and they'll get this cleaned up and running smoothly again.  I have too much time invested in these clowns to give up before I see what Z&H can do.

********************

LUKE!  Good man!  It can be harder to call out other people on their intolerance than it is to be tolerant yourself.  That scene would make a nice clip for the GLAAD awards.

Alicia Witt is a polarizing actress and I've always been on the "pro" side.  But she really did not need to add vocal fry to her whole unconventional bag.  Stop that.

Well of course Deacon's drawn back to the bottle.  Losing The Beverly is just like his sainted sister dying all over again.    [SARCASM!!]

Teenage Maddie singing her come-hither sex song yarks me out, but I'm really captured by the melody.  To me it sounds complicated and difficult to sing and it reminds me of Alannah Myles' Black Velvet.

Thumbs up for Glen and Will; everyone else, meh.

I did like the opening song, though. It's a *long* time since the show had a new song, let alone one that actually fit the character, their established style, *and* their present personal circumstances, which was such a great feature of season 1.

I laughed so hard at that. The best thing that could happen with this Maddie foolishness would be the end of the Beverly. Just let it go.

When Layla threw that tantrum and stormed out of the house I knew for certain Avery would end up apologizing later. She even managed to work up some tears. Between Layla and his Cadence, the girlfriend is the one acting as if she needs a nap. That should be a red flag.

I think Juliette was feeling so lonely and rejected. You know how it is with people - the ex moves on and you feel like you have to even though you're not really ready. Avery is doing the same thing with Layla, only he's running from his feelings for Juliette. Noah was nice to Juliette back in the day and they did have a spark. I'm not mad at her for it, but I'm not sure a long term relationship would work out. But while it's happening, I'm totally here for it. I laughed when Avery saw the pictures of her and Derek. He should be happy, right? Isn't he getting everything he wanted? Juliette's moving on, he's got a "great" girlfriend, good gig, getting to play again, the baby's healthy and happy. All is well, right?

I did too. Some of the stories are too depressing and too soapy for my taste, but I've endured that for four seasons so I'm not going to throw in the towel now with the prospect of new show runners. I do think overall this season has got better, maybe because Juliette is back but I also think the pace has slowed and scenes are getting longer. Anyway, it's a better viewing experience for me.

I disagree - I think the show wants us to see Deacon as self-pitying, and self-centred to a degree. In my view he's consistently been like this since the start although he was also allowed to be funnier and happier earlier on. The current storyline is so miserable that all the character is allowed to do is feel miserable, which is getting old. But I'm sure people do behave badly in AA meetings.

I'll be in the minority with you then. I really liked most of the storylines this episode and Will's made me cry. I still want Cash/Frankie to go, but I actually understand why Autumn is on the show. I think it's interesting to look at how a duo works when one of the artists become more famous than the other (I've always thought it must be a breeding ground for discontent when the singer gets all the credit in bands) - although I could do without the sex-angle the show is throwing at Gunnar and Scarlett. I want those two kids to make it work; but I also understand why - with their history - it's a fragile peace.

Finally Rayna realized she got another daughter who's hurting. I really wanted Tandy to read her the riot act - out of anybody she knows how it feels to be the one left behind. I don't really give a shit whether Deacon crawls back into the bottle or not, but for Rayna and Daphne's sake I'm happy he chose differently this time.

I'm so happy the show has allowed her to grow. She's still my favourite character and I want everything good to happen for her. If a roll in the hay with a pretty guy makes her happy/less unhappy, then it's alright with me. I would have prefered her and Luke to grow closer (how did Luke end up being one of my favourite characters? Good for you, show, for turning me around on him), but Derek Hough is a perfect candidate for a self-esteem boost. And he seemed kind and sincere with her.

At the moment I'm so upset with Avery (bad life choices, dude!) I hope she'll truly move on from him and leave him heartbroken by the wayside. Might make me a vindictive bitch, but I'll feast on his man tears when he realizes he lost her for good. I was a very big proponent for Juliette/Avery, but at the moment I don't want them together ever again.

Of course Juliette drug the first man she could find upstairs to have sex.  Some things never change.  And please get the insufferable Derek Hough off of this show.

Maddie the wannabe sex pot is hilarious.  She sounds off key and looked silly.

Poor Deacon.  He just has nothing but bad luck on his side.  And poor Daphne.  She is left with Tandy and that is not saying much.

I enjoyed this episode too. And I agree with the above statement. I can't root for them being together right now and I think it would take me some time to be able to root for them again. I loved them together, but the way he's acted lately - as if the PPD meant nothing, I can't deal. I don't ship the Luke stuff romantically, but I am not opposed to her and Noah. At all.

But I'm actually not rooting for any couple on this show right now, outside of Will and Kevin. Deacon and Rayna are a mess and I don't really care anymore. Scarlett and Gunnar were cute for the five seconds that they got to be happy with each other but that was all they - and the fans got.

Lastly, Layla is crazy. That can't be said enough. Bat shit crazy. She and Jeff were a perfect match.

Man, Rayna has some kind of patience because I would have written ungrateful Maddie off a long time ago. Her big New York career move can't crash and burn fast enough. I want her to come crawling back, tail between her legs, only to have Rayna say "Maddie who?"

Good to see the Tandy/Daphne and Rayna/Daphne scenes. Daphne has needed this support. When Daphne said "I hate her", I said "don't we all".

Man, Deacon just can't catch a break. But I was happy to see Juliette in a much better place this week.

Let's think about this in the context of what Layla just did and excuse every other cruel and manipulative thing she's done since she's been on the show. She just told Avery a week ago that she cared about him too much to put him through anything more than he's already been through. Seven days later, she thought up a plan where she could use his D-list (at best) celebrity status to boost her sagging album sales. Then, when he was upset over the pics she gaslighted him about it and he ended up apologizing for overreacting. She's not pursuing happiness. And she's not kind. Far from it. As I've said before, Layla cares about her career and she'll do anything to be successful. Including using Avery - and by extension Juliette. If she could sell Cadence and somehow benefit from it career-wise, I'd fear for the child's safety.

Listen here - the reason I spazzed out over that word was that Layla Grant has not done a single good deed on the show. EVER.

And seriously folks, this show hasn't allowed Juliette to "grow". It's just that in comparisons with all the other demons and she-devils running around on this show, she seems like a saint.

I hope that Noah is being sincere because he could be a fun rebound guy for Juliette. I'm really hoping that having pictures of the two of them show up in the media was supposed to illustrate the contrast between two celebs who are willing to see where this relationship goes vs Layla's desperate attempt to get publicity by using Avery. I know that we like Avery because we get to see his personality but in the world of the show, the pictures of him kissing Layla could best be described as "has been reality star caught in an alley with country star's baby daddy." Imagine the real world equivalent of Kevin Federline being photographed making out with some chick from American Idol (but not Kelly, Carrie, Jennifer Hudson, or Jordin). More like Nikki McKibbin. Anyway, since Noah is suposed to already be famous, fingers crossed that he isn't dating Juliette for the publicity.
