Returning to his studio in Montreal, Potterton produced the 1971 Oscar-nominated animated short The Selfish Giant, based on an Oscar Wilde short story.

This is pretty obscure but I remember it with fondness. It turned up a few times on local NYC channels way back when. I remember the knight dancing in particular. Didn't recognize the Christian overtones as a kid. If you have 27 minutes, check it out.

I also own the movie and soundtrack for Heavy Metal.

Fellow NY-er here!  I used to watch The Selfish Giant too!  Always a good lesson to learn.  I always rememebred not only the knight dancing on the roof, but the woman whose coat/cape would blanket the area in snow.

"Ashes of Nichelle Nichols Are Set for Journey to Deep Space" (nytimes.com/2022/08/27/arts/television/nichelle-nichols-ashes-space-rocket.html)

Quote

The ashes of Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in the original “Star Trek” television series and died in July, will be launched into space later this year.

Celestis, a private spaceflight company that works with NASA, will carry her ashes on a rocket set to travel between 150 million and 300 million kilometers into space beyond the Earth-moon system and the James Webb telescope. . . .

Mae Jemison, who became the first woman of color to go to space in 1992, often said Ms. Nichols’s performance on “Star Trek” inspired her interest in the cosmos.

After Ms. Nichols’s death, the NASA administrator, Bill Nelson, said in a statement that her “advocacy transcended television and transformed NASA.”

“Nichelle’s mission is NASA’s mission,” he said. “Today, as we work to send the first woman and first person of color to the moon under Artemis, NASA is guided by the legacy of Nichelle Nichols.”

RIP country singer Luke Bell. He went missing in Tucson and was later found dead.

Damn -- bipolar disorder strikes again.  Apparently, his health had been a lot more stable the past year and a half until very recently.  Here's an article with a lot more information than that short news report.

I'm saddened to hear about Mr. Bell's untimely death- especially since it seems he was with at least one person evidently looking out for him when he left that person's company before his disappearance.

It seems his style was hearkened back to an earlier era. I wonder if he may have felt that he didn't belong in this contemporary New Millennial world.

RIP, Mr. Bell.

Actor William Reynolds who played Special Agent Tom Colby on the TV series The F.B.I. has died, age 90.

I had heard of this incarnation of FBI (what Dragnet and Adam-12 did for the police, this show did for the Feds) although I was too young to watch it (I don't think it was in syndication either.  I don't even remember it appearing on classic TV channels, although I could be wrong).

I think it's great that Reynolds found purpose beyond Hollywood.  RIP sir.

Richard Roat was in everything in the '70s and '80s, but to me he'll always be Al Beatty, the guy who died in Rose's bed on The Golden Girls.  (As was common then, he appeared several seasons later as a different character, but even though that later episode is one of my favorites - "The Case of the Libertine Bell" - I still associate him with Al.)

It was his work during the first Gulf War that really established CNN as the go-to 24/7 news source.

Definitely.

And he'd already earned major cred within the journalism community back during the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, when he refused to join other anchors in (erroneously) reporting James Brady had died of his gunshot wound, because he didn't have confirmation from a reliable source; those folks wound up needing to retract, and he emerged as an example of journalistic responsibility, being on a nascent network but refusing to do the "it's being said that" routine.

Wow  -  I was aware of her for being still with us at an advanced age and being blacklisted but did not know of her humanitarian and SAG work.  What an interesting amazing life to have led.

I don't know why the awards shows insist on focusing on the performer and arty establishing shots instead of the memorial pictures. I couldn't even see half the names on my little TV. Almost all of them do this and it's very annoying.
