Kohola3 December 13, 2018 Share December 13, 2018 This whole "teaching English" always has me scratching my head. They don't speak of the native language so how exactly do they teach? Syntax? 13 Link to comment

I think a lot of these programs, especially in the developing world, use a computerized lesson system, kind of like Rosetta Stone, only cheaper. The students sit in front of the screen while the ‘teacher’ hangs out to handle any program glitches, correct pronunciation, etc. It’s a cheap way to ‘teach’ English to the masses and that’s why they don’t need actual educational training. 5 Link to comment
mojito December 13, 2018 Share December 13, 2018 Quote They don't speak of the native language so how exactly do they teach? ESL teachers manage, and many with students with multiple native languages. The kids just get immersed in the language. I shook my head when the guy stated twice that something was "very Cambodian". I'm sure he'd say the same thing about just about anything that he was unfamiliar with. I kept thinking that he really should have made this trip alone. He was entirely too excited about eating on the floor, something which, I believe, is still legal in Canada. 11 Link to comment

abbyzenn December 13, 2018 Share December 13, 2018 I didn't see the Cambodia episode but regarding the issue of English teachers. My brother (who was a teacher in the US for 10 years) was in the peace corps in Thailand where he taught Thai teachers how to teach English. He ended up staying for about 5 more years teaching at a university and married a Cambodian (she was living in Thailand). This is from about 5 years ago but they went to Cambodia while waiting to get her a visa to come to the US (they were only engaged at the time). He found that there were few paying jobs in Cambodia for teaching English because there were so many relief organizations with volunteers who teach English. The few paying jobs the salary was very very low. Only the jobs at International Schools pay much and for those you have to be a qualified teacher in math, science, English, etc at the secondary level or a primary school teacher. 9 Link to comment

SmithW6079 December 20, 2018 Share December 20, 2018 (edited) In agreement with folks about both the Sydney and Ho Chi Minh couples. Sydney was an odd couple. She reminded me a little of a neighbor I used to have -- loud, obnoxious, a bit low class; basically a diamond in the rough (at the coal stage). She was definitely older than her "fiancé." When she was talking about what she thought life would be like in Australia, I was hoping she was joking and not being an ignorant American. I actually liked the second place the best. It didn't have curb appeal, for sure, but the rooms were decent, it was close to his office, it was cheaper, and that view ... was real and it was spectacular. I'm thinking the front is a two-car garage, and the apartment is behind it. The real estate agent was kind of cute in a douchey frat boy kind of way. The Vietnam couple -- I think we know who wears the strap-on in that family. What a whiny bitch he was. I liked the third place, if it was just for me, or if it was for a couple. It would be cool having a bedroom in a loft like that. I don't get, however, that the non-kitchen he complained about in the first place was somehow acceptable in the third place (oh, right, the landlord was going to put in a stove 😃 ). Then wants a stove and oven (agent stated that Vietnamese typically cook over a hot plate) and declares rooms too small. I liked the wife stating that bland rooms allowed them to put in their own personality. It seemed that traditional Vietnamese in his book merely meant colorful seating. Is everyone coached not to say "not what I wanted" but to say "not what I was hoping for" instead? Yeah, if he wanted a traditional Vietnamese place, he would have accepted all that went with it. And the wife was right, they could have made the rooms with more personality. I took it to mean they could get traditional Vietnamese furnishings or decorations to give it a more authentic look. 8 hours ago, LittleIggy said: Guadalajara: I liked Los Pollos Primos. It looked like a cool place. Thanks for posting. I didn’t like the place they chose but I certainly get why they chose it. Link to comment
sempervivum December 20, 2018 Share December 20, 2018 LA to Guadalajara- I was sure when I saw one of the bro-dudes throw himself on the bed in that first place, rubbing his head all over somebody's pillowcase, that this was (already) their apartment. Huh, guess not. Wash your sheets, whoever actually lives there. This city didn't have a chicken sandwich restaurant, according to the guys? Hard to believe, but- good for them if they make a success of it. 3 Link to comment

Several of the reviews on TripAdvisor mentioned how nice the owners were. As for Vietnam, whenever some HH says a place doesn’t have enough “character,” I say “you give the place character then. Go out to the markets and get local stuff for the place.” 🙄 4 Link to comment

They seem like nice guys. Good for them. Exactly LittleIggy, we are definitely in agreement about the decorating. Link to comment

I couldn’t help think about that bathroom. I’d never take a bath there. On 12/18/2018 at 11:59 AM, Ohwell said: I'm not convinced they were even a couple. They certainly didn't act like it. They both played poker, I think he said he had a software job, but not sure what she'd be doing other than playing poker. I thought the boyfriend/fiancé was mean to Lauren. He told her 3 times that he wasn’t sure they were ready to live together. And they’d already moved to Australia together!! I know the show is staged and they’d already been living together for a while. Still, that’s something pretty humiliating to say on TV multiple times, knowing that her family and friends (and HER) would have to watch and listen to him saying that in perpetuity. Plus, he called her messy—and not in a joking, quirky way. Lauren did take some jabs at him, too, though they weren’t as mean—she called him a computer nerd and correctly pointed out that she’s the one who does all of the cooking, even though he wanted to decide what kind of kitchen they’d have. I wonder if this couple will be together in a year. 6 Link to comment
