The All You Can Eat Buffet: My 600 Pound Life All Episode Discussion

I think with the double Poundticipant episodes, they almost always will have to do a WATN to cover the original story in two hours, and then the follow up.     With John and Lonnie, and Carlton and Shantel, that will be a good thing.    With some others, I really didn't like the follow up, because I like a success story.    I can't wait for the John and Lonnie, and Carlton and Shantel followups, and hope they're all super successful.

On the other hand, I never want to hear another word about Angie, the Assantis, James K, Maja, Annjeannette, and from this season, Lindsey, GIna, Joyce, and Bethany, and now add Seana.

A storm knocked out my cable and internet for over 13 hours yesterday, but saved shows on TIVO could be played so I watched a bunch mostly Supersized since I seldom watch those.  Anyway, there was James K in his WATN episode.  That was a bizarre episode!  Dr. Now did a sting on Lisa sneaking him food and trying the get APS involved ... I had forgotten a lot of it.  I googled for any sort of update, like if he's still alive but found nothing.  Lisa's FB page is worthless, but says she's still in Houston.

What a couple!  In their first episode I defended her thinking she suffered a great deal of abuse then changed my mind.  Then felt empathy for James because he must be a so much pain.  Then realized his selfishness trumped his pain.

IOW, they're both POSs and deserve each other.  God forgive me.

Yes, they are beyond lost, and almost beyond snark.  If one of these TLC show's calculated reasons for being on is to make the rest of us feel better about our own issues, then ok.

Now that TLC is repeating not-so-old episodes, so many are just a blur  Right now it's a replay of Liz.  I had forgotten how BAD her lymphedema was, I think the worst we've ever seen.  He removed them but she's so scared of PT.  There's been a few others bedridden for so long who had the same terror.  I can understand it -- so atrophied and so much pain.

And she cheated.  But her pizza had spinach!  I find her very sweet.  Not a great success, but not a failure.  I should find her follow up episode because I just don't remember!

I am friends with Chay from season 3. She just got married over the weekend.

Yay!  I'd love another follow up with her.

In her first episode, she said something that really stuck with me for years about food addiction (paraphrasing):  If you gamble, you can quit going to casinos; if you smoke, you can quit cigarettes; if you drink, you can stop using alcohol, but you can't quit eating.  And the addiction makes you do all of it in excess.

She was such a talented home cook, kinda hope she pursued that.

Congrats Chay!

Also, I've heard that post bariatric surgery patients often encounter substance abuse problems with drugs and alcohol.  I get the meds part, but, I did't think you were supposed to drink alcohol after that kind of surgery.

Its called switching addictions.  If they don't substitute a healthy coping mechanism after wgt loss surgery, they will switch to different unhealthy  addictions.  Its very common...and it makes sense...after all, we all need something to get us through ☺️

I'm just watching episodes of this show now - I think they're re-runs.  It always amuses me that every obese person featured refers to following a healthy diet as "work".  They all whine the same thing to the doctor when their weight hasn't dropped,  "But I've been working so hard".

Working?  They wouldn't know hard work if it hit them in the head.

Ummmm.....you must not be a food addict then.  Its worse than work if you are. Damn near impossible..... unless you're in their shoes.......you wouldn't understand. Have a great day☺️

And some of the 600 lbers have switched between drugs and food and sometimes have concurrent addictions to both. (I guess that is redundant. )

However,  a lot of them simply find a weak excuse to eat too much!  For a very long time.  Because they can.

I think that most of the morbidly obese patients on the show call the diet work because they are eating food that is very different than what they are used to and it doesn’t appear that appetizing. It would seem they would adapt better to the new diet if they put some zest into it. Healthy food can be delicious and not a chore to eat. Cooking and eating with gusto is possible. It’s not punishment to feed your body wholesome food. Do they work with herbs and seasoning? Adding flavor and moisture into the food would help. It often appears they eat hard, cold, dry chicken with iceberg lettuce.  I don’t get it. With so much time on your hands, you’d have time to make all kinds of creations in the kitchen.

"I want Chinese food with fried rice"

"well I don't know about the rice because I'm pretty sure it was on the list"

It all boils down to education and common sense.  Of which, those people have NEITHER! (they can sure figure out how to post a go-fund me campaign but can't figure out that fried rice is worse for you than regular rice).

ETA: if they had a lick of common sense, they could have definitely fed James his freaking chinese food--Chicken or shrimp with steamed veggies and no sauce (if he wanted to "splurge" he could do a tiny bit of soy sauce on the side or even steak instead of the chicken or shrimp).  No.Common.Sense.

Ive heard people think egg rolls are healthy and light because of the cabbage in them......like, do the words deep fried ring any bells here? 🤣

Guess who (according to Starcasm) signed up with the attorney now?    Jeanne, also known as No Hy-Jeanne, and her mother.     They claim the mother was promised that TLC would pay for her hernia surgery (the one that saved her life), and the mother got a $70,000 bill from the hospital.

They claim everything was exaggerated for filming.   Including that filthy trailer they lived in?

When we go out for dinner, my husband will always get fries with his burger or sandwich, even steak. I always like to get a piece of salmon and while I eat carbs and do a baked potato, I also like to have a salad. This past weekend, it was quite warm, I had lunch with my friends and had a salad (it had edamame, broccoli, carrots on good greens and then for dinner out, had another salad that I had them take off the bacon. I actually feel like I sometimes crave the healthy foods.

I got an Instant Pot for Christmas. I see tons of recipes for mac and cheese or something alfredo.... cream, cheese, butter.... I don't like to eat that way. Tonight's dinner is cut up chicken breast, baby potatoes, fresh green beans and fresh carrots seasoned up and in a simple broth. I can't wait to eat tonight.

I know.  Do they ever have grilled salmon with dill and fresh lemon, roasted veggies with garlic and rosemary?  I can see why they keep saying that they are trying to do the program and not actually DOING the program.  It sounds like they think their diet stinks and is a punishment worse than death.  IDK, maybe, once you are really addicted to fast food or high fat, high sodium, highly processed food, you just can't break free.

Maybe you crave the fat and salt. I mean like Seana eating pizza rolls. They are kind of gross tasting. And I noticed most of the pizza these people eat looks cheap and gross. I live near chicago and am VERY selective of my pizza.

I've come up with a new game to play to spice up these boring episodes. In addition to Guess the Weight and checking off the Bingo cards, see if you can predict at what minute in the two hour episode Dr. Now first utters the words "____ not going to make it"

I don't know what's in store for us live chatters tonight (except tons of fun!), but I can predict with only a slight margin of error that we will hear the following statements during tonight's episode:

1. "When I'm eating, it's the best feeling in the world."

2. "I just can't wait to have my first bite of food for the day."

3. "I have to clean between the folds or I'll get skin infections."

4. "I know I don't have much time left."

5. "Can we pull over to get some fast food?"

6. "I'm in a lot of pain right now."

7. "I had no idea I weighed that much."

8. "Something is wrong. The number on the scale can't be right."

9. "But I'm trying  so hard to make good progress."

10. "Dr. Now's diet is just too strict."

I find it strange that every time a former Poundticipant signs on for the lawsuit, then the producers replay the episode showing how little they tried to follow the program.     Today was Jeanne's rerun.

I'm not watching Seana's rerun, because I'm sick of idiot whiners, and I don't believe a damn thing Seana or her mother said.

My theory is that Dr. Now already cut back.   That other doctors work for him taking care of the non-show patients.    The reason we see the poundticipants go in late, and leave after dark, is because he's using the office at the end of the day.   It makes filming easier, and doesn't take up rooms used by the regular patients.     I think Dr. Now is only doing surgery on his own patients, and the WATN episodes.      I hope his schedule is much lighter than the show implies.    Sadly, my guess is the other doctors won't continue the high-risk 500 lbs plus patients either.

He certainly deserves a happy retirement.   Look at all of the people he helped, that others refused to even attempt to take on as patients.

I totally agree.  Baked fish with dill, garlic and olive oil is totally seductive, as is real pizza.  (I'm sure we could go on for hours about pizza, but the fast-food stuff shoveled in by pounticipants by the square footage isn't it.

It does seem like a grease and salt addiction and maybe a satisfaction of chewing greasy food and swallowing without really tasting.  Fast food sure Smells better than it tastes.  Like when they wafted cookie smell through malls in the 80's.

I remember a pounticipant from a few years ago (was it the tater-tot-casserole gal?) who showed for the camera her lenten penance in a doleful voice----

baby carrots (raw, yuck) spoon of almond butter for dipping (ok) and the requisite boiled boneless, skinless chicken breast, sans any seasoning.

"Look at me, I'm doing my Punishment, and after a month (or two) of this I will get the magic Surgery which will relieve me of responsibility for my self and get my life "back" whatever that means when you never owned it in the first place.  200 lbs at 5 yrs. or whatever.

THERAPY!  to start!  And real nutritional counselling.  After 30 years of marriage, even my husband, who never met a fish who didn't look better breaded and fried, has learned to appreciate baked fish.

There was a time this show was interesting and informative. I learned a lot about severe obesity, addictions, family dynamics and of course, lymphedema.

I miss THAT show. There were encouraging stories where you would see lots of transformations, not only physically, but mentally as well. Back in those days, at the end of the show there was a side by side shot of "before and after". That was when there was success and the show had a formula that held the viewers interest. Since the after is more often worse than the before, they don't even bother with a comparison shot.

I am all about snark, but c'mon, this show is 2 hours long of torture. I can not watch for that long and stay sane. I just can't.  I am done with the lifeless drama. I personally prefer success (think Zsalynn). I can still snark and berate, but at least there is a purpose to my time dedication to the show.

Oh well. I can always watch foot skin being scraped...........

The moment Pauline said the famous words about cleaning her own v----- and later the Assanti brothers showed up, this show become less informative and more exploitative and circus. Same thing that happened to 90 Day Fiance. Now its let see the train wrecks. We all contributed to it by watching it and there is nothing wrong with a guilty pleasure, but after awhile it gets old. I think of a particular cooking show that had people being really awful to each other. It got old for me. Especially when I started watching Great British Bake Off and saw people can be nice and things still can be interesting and compelling even.

I never watched GBBO but a guy I used to work with was on the American edition a couple years ago(?), so I watched it until he was eliminated. It was nice to see that they would actually help each other finish a challenge rather than watch someone fail. I like American Ninja Warrior for similar reasons - they're all competing against each other but they all seem to genuinely cheer each other on, too.

The American version is very similar to the British. It leaves you feeling good. I haven't watch Ninja Warrior in ages (I was a bigger fan of the Japanese version) but I know they really cheer each other on too.

I'm a new to this snow, I can't believe how things have changed. In 1987, when I was 26, I had a gastric bypass which I know how mine was done is antiquated. I was 400+ lbs, at 5'11". I didn't have to lose weight. They scheduled mine right away. Things are so different and 99% of the people who had theirs done has gained their weight and more. I haven't. I'm about 198. I do suffer from anemia, low B12, calcium, and vitamin D. My doctor was so kind. But I don't know what makes me different from the other patients. I do feel for some of these patients, because no one knows what it is like to be in our heads. I will say that to accommodate me, my family ate like I did. In any event thanks for having me and I look forward to much more with you guys!

ITA with everything you said @Fig Newton but especially the bolded parts.

I really miss learning about the super morbidly obese, why they are the way they are and all the other aspects of their lives you pointed out. I also missed the side-by-side shots at the end but the the TLC producers are so formulaic and beyond lazy they can't be bothered. Great observation that with all of the train wrecks maybe they figure what's the point.

If anyone needed a good palette-cleansing from this year's parade of crybabies, whiners & b.s. artists...the perfect antidote was on this morning.  I was getting ready for the gym and saw a an update show featuring Diane for a few years ago.  This is someone who GETS IT.  Someone to be admired.  Someone who shows that a quitter never wins and a winner never quits.  She had to get double knee replacement (as I say....from too many years of being stupid....and I speak from experience on that one) but never gave up.

Many years ago I damaged my meniscus coaching basketball and then "got stupid" for too many years.  I dropped the weight thanks to sleeve gastrectomy, work out like I am possessed, but still have osteo-arthritis in the right knee.  All from being stupid for too long.

Lesson learned.  Don't be stupid.

Olivia also!  The early folks were great.  I loved Olivia and she had the worst depression and really didn't think she'd make it; but she did!  She also had to have both knees replaced because of the weight.  Last I heard she's doing her dream and working as a chef.  And on her new knees 12 hours or so a day with no pain..

Every time Lola come on the show I have to grab my acoustic and start playing "Lola".  Some people like her beauty, some like her wigs.  I have the impulse to play "Lola".

I play it well but I am asked to not sing.  I could make Huskies howl a mile away.  I wouldn't know a correct vocal key from a hole in the ground.

Oh, now I can't get that song out of my head (Coca, not Cherry) cola included.  Go on, belt it out!  I can't sing at all, but my late-night guilty fun is singing and dancing to stuff like "Smokin' in the Boy's Room", "Spiders and Snakes" and especially  "American Pie".  I know all the words. IMO it referred to JFK.  Long, long time ago, we used to drive the pickup up to an irrigation ditch and drink our strawberry sodas and eat burgers and watch the water go by.  Coolth by extension.  You were always warned never to swim in them, which of course we never did.

I have always rooted for her.  From being basically imprisoned in the basement of her parents' house in a Chicago winter to living her dreams---hooray!

You know, don't regret it.  I had spine surgery last year from too many years with the nail gun and hammer.  Have osteo in my hands and neck, but so....

Glad you are healthy and lead an active life.  Getting older sucks, but it sure beats the alternative!

That was Olivia,  Diane who was similar, had her niece married to a tech bro in Seattle   She did great too, but credit where credit is due.  :)

This has gotten so OT!  Sorry,  Probably because Ashley was such a snooze
