Hallmark Movies: Small Town Royalty Magically Celebrating Rekindled Love! - General Discussion

Apparently inviting everyone for a party when she moved in was something AW did in real life that completely flopped.

Looking at the list of Christmas movies this year there doesn't seem to be much diversity and no LGBT main couple, despite Hallmark promising last year that this was an area that they were committed to working on.

I can’t believe they’re starting Countdown to Christmas on October 18.  That is just too damn early. Next we will hear that in 2025 they will start on Sept 1.  At least start after Halloween.  To be honest, I’ve not been watching much Hallmark for the past several months.  Their movies are boring and formulaic with actors who have no chemistry and are lacking talent.  I’d rather see fewer new movies that have better storylines.  And I know I’ve said this before but when a network has literally hundreds of movies at their disposal, Hallmark shows the same movies over and over again. It’s gotten so bad that some friends of mine say that they can recite the dialogue of so many of their movies.

The Heiress and the Handyman.  Oof.  Turned it off after ten minutes.  The lead was awful and so was her wig.
I am looking forward to the football movie. The writer has done some of my favorites, such as Chanukah on Rye and last year’s Groundhog Day type romance.

Ooh, thanks for the heads up.  I'm not a fan of the game, but do like that writer.  She lives in CT and often works our town names or combinations of them into her scripts.  It's probaly unlikely in this case given the Kansas City setting, but I still like her writing and the cast looks fun (and star-studded by Hallmark's standards).

Did anyone watch The Real West?  I had to do something else after the first 20 minutes and am wondering — how did they resolve that the cowboy was the guy her sister liked / was dating?

The sister made Kimberly Sustad's character (don't know her name so I'll refer to her as KS) hang out with the guy she was dating (LB=Luke Bryant's character) "alone" because she wanted her to vet him. (So silly).  Meanwhile, the sister tells KS's character that an old classmate who had a crush on her (KS) was coming to the ranch and the sister thought KS should go out with him because he always liked her.  She said she'd vet him for KS.

(At this point, you can kind of see where it's going).

KS and LB kept hanging out and the attraction kept growing.  Her sister keeps trying to convince KS how great this old classmate is.  Eventually, LB realizes how much he has grown to like KS and breaks up with the sister.  Then the youngest son of KS goes missing while ghost hunting and LB finds him.  KS and LB get into a deep conversation that her sister stumbles upon and realizes that LB is the guy her sister (KS) had met and liked at the beginning of the trip.  She said she was sad but mostly because her sister never was honest with her about what was going on.

Eventually, sis convinces KS that she should pursue her happiness with LB's character and sister decides to take her shot with the old classmate she was originally trying to set up KS with.

In the end, KS gets tenure in Boulder.  LB decides to work with the old classmate who was setting up some sort of horse therapy thing in Boulder too.  KS and LB and the sister and the old classmate are all going to be happy in Boulder.

I don't think we ever found out where the older son whose girlfriend went on the trip decided to go to school. I don't know that anyone cares but since I dedicated myself to the recap....

I appreciate all of that! @Irlandesa  The online FB folks are raving about how great the movie was and the strong chemistry with KS and LB.  I was really wondering about the sister feeling kinda betrayed by KS and LB.  I left the movie right after the sister told KS to spend the entire day with LB — just the two of them — to vet her beau.  So odd, at least to me, (and especially how the pairing turned out) but I’m probably overthinking a Hallmark movie.

The chemistry was fine, but when James Denton appeared I immediately wished he were younger so he could have been Sustad’s love interest. I can’t believe he’s  early 60’s.

The Real West - would love to hear someone from the real West weigh in.  The twangy country music background and the Hat Guru had me racing for the off button.

Fake country accents bother me. Especially when it’s only a few characters that have them and actors don’t always do them well.

The mister chose to watch the latest KS movie - The Real West. I like her, and I'll watch any movie with horses... I'm a lover of most 4-leggeds.

Near the end, he said (I'm paraphrasing): These movies are all the same. Man meets woman, stuff goes wrong, and they magically work it out... and then it ends. I replied, yeah - it's sort of like life. Stuff happens. We work it out. Rinse and repeat. Them we die. The end.

I enjoyed this one... especially the horses.

So predictable, the moment the KS's sister mentioned the guy from KS's past was coming to visit, it was obvious. I can see the sequel now, the sisters weddings and the Mom and Denton's character falling in love etc...  Great scenery and horses though.

The sister storyline was weak, come on Hallmark, you can do better than this. Those FB folks are something else, I'll leave it at that.

Looking at the Christmas movie lineup there are a few movies with pairings that look interesting: Meghan Ory and John Reardon  (real life couple); Beau Mirchoff and Kim Matula; Chabert and Polaha; Sustad/Ayres. Also looking forward to Hanukkah on the Rocks.

I'll be looking forward to seeing Hanukkah On The Rocks.  Cora Matheson, who's been in a few Hallmark movies,  reminds me of Alyson Hannigan a bit.

Despite being a big fan of both leads, I found The Real West to be rather disappointing. The script felt half-baked, the acting was weak (some cast members more so than others) and overall it reminded me of too many other Hallmark movies which I enjoyed more. I ended up messing around on my iPad for much of the second half rather than watching, which is never a good sign. And my biggest point of interest in the entire movie was what kind of tree KS and LB kept meeting up under - it was so big I would've thought an oak of some kind, but the few glimpses we got of the leaves didn't quite look right, so ??? It's still vexing me, lol.

Okay, I'll do this --  It's late Sunday evening and nobody at all has posted since the new Hallmark movie on Saturday night.  So interesting ..  It didn't appeal to me and I wanted to watch Saturday Night Live.  But has anybody actually watched it on Saturday or the repeat on Sunday?
Or maybe there's another website where people are commenting?  I like our crowd .. but maybe everybody is as bored as I've been with the recent entries.

Anyway, Hi everybody!

I think you nailed it.  The stories never change, the writers just substitute some sort of fruit or vegetable for the failing farm or use some sort of cutsie business that needs saving.  Boy/girl, sparks fly, stupid misunderstanding, "see the light", kiss in the last 4 minutes.

I don't have two hours to waste on Hallmark anymore.

The Autumn at Apple Hill movie was okay-ish.

Quite derivative (oooh, we need to save the Inn, we've gotta set up a big event to raise some funds, yaddayaddayadda) and sometimes felt like a repurposed Christmas movie script (I swear, the bit with the generators "because we've got too many lights and decorations for our old fuse box" was just copypasted from a Christmas script they had laying around), but I like Erin Cahill & Wes Brown, I felt they had a fun chemistry, and the script had enough amusing tidbits (the video game rivalry, the awkward assistant, Wes Brown's relationship with his boss mom) to keep me interested.

(also, I liked seeing some actual Halloween decorations and costumes, for once)

I had it on in the background and found it inoffensive.  However, as noted above, the entire script was a retread of dozens of other Hallmark movies.

Girl lives in the big city, has a high powered, important job and a boyfriend/fiance who is also a workaholic exec.  She goes back to small town that she left behind years ago. Grandma has died and left her the family business despite the fact that she has never shown a bit of interest in it and was eager to move away and live elsewhere since her teens.

Business is failing and they need to find a way to revitalize it ASAP before the loan comes due and the bank forecloses; or something.

Girl runs into quirky local guy who she hasn't seen since high school and, despite clashing at first, they join forces to save the business with some unique idea like a party, a ball, a Christmas fair, a holiday festival, etc, etc, etc.

Complications arise, but they pull it off and everyone is so excited that the new tradition has been started or the old tradition returned.  Meanwhile, girl realizes she cares for quirky local guy and wants to live in Podunk; so she quits her fancy job, tells her big city boyfriend it's over and lives happily ever after in Hallmarkia.

I started it late Saturday night and ended up falling asleep (not necessarily because I was bored, although I was, but because I was tired).  I wanted to try it to see if it offered something unexpected that would make me want to watch it.  That could be something as simple as unexpected humor or an interesting take.  But it was basically what I expected it to be.  That doesn't mean it's bad for viewers for whom this kind of movie would be a warm snuggly blanket but that isn't me.

But it kind of got off on a bad note for me when they showed the division of assets in the divorce and she got to "keep" her family's place.  It doesn't sound like they lived there so that shouldn't be a part of a marital settlement.  If it's her inheritance, unless he put money into maintaining/updating it (and it doesn't sound like he did), then he'd have no claim on it.  Heck, even if he did, at most it'd be half of the appreciation between when she inherited it and when they divorced.

I know that sounds kind of nit picky but it's such a small thing that they don't need to get wrong for the story to work and yet they do.

For some stupid reason, i thought this movie was going to have  a Halloweeny theme like the old inn that's been inherited, has spooky past and has some friendly ghosts????  That would have been more fun, alas, we get the same old, same old.   Don't get me wrong, love Erin Cahill and Wes Brown, but gee, seems like half the movie before Erin's character,(who I can't even recall the name, shows how forgettable the movie was)   to figure out Wes' character(?) wasn't there at the inn to buy her out. Really wish Hallmark would actually do more spooky Halloween themed movies during October.

Good point because if she hadn't had to pay the ex some money for her to have sole ownership of the Inn, she would have been in much better financial shape, not to mention be able to afford all the much needed repairs. I hadn't even thought that her ex should not have had any claim to her inheritance. When they mentioned her "buying the inn", I thought, perhaps, that there were other relatives who had a stake to the inn.

Rarely do they show divorced people, so that was different. I'm not a big fan of Erin Cahill, but do like Wes Brown. For me, watching Hallmark movies are more enjoyable when I record and start watching about a half-hour into the movie, or an hour later. I can knock off 30 minutes by zipping through commercials. It's also the only way my husband will watch them with me.

I've noticed traffic on this entire site has been declining for some time - I'm a big figure skating fan, and it used to be I couldn't keep up with the thread during skating season due to the volume of posts, but in the last year or so it's practically a ghost town over there. As for these Hallmark threads, I'm sure the repetitive nature of the movies has lost some viewers/posters over time, but I like comfort viewing and sometimes these movies will surprise you.

Autumn at Apple Hill would've been an OK if unremarkable movie if it weren't for the lead - she was so unprofessional, immature and downright stupid for the first 40 minutes of the movie (yes, I took note of how long it took her to finally apologize to Wes Brown) that it frankly put me off the entire movie. I enjoyed WB and the little touches of humor he brought, I liked the employee/assistant Norah, but Erin Cahill's character brought down the whole thing for me. And I say this as a fellow dinosaur who hates ever-evolving tech and works to avoid it whenever possible. But not only did she continually refuse help from people with the knowledge and willingness to help her, she didn't even possess a whit of basic business sense. Do better, Hallmark.

Probably doesn't help that my neck of the woods is in the throes of a never-ending heatwave that makes it feel more like July than October, so it's hard for me to get into the fall spirit I normally live for.

Looking forward to Haunted Wedding this weekend - my prediction is that it will either be a hot mess or a weird little gem of brilliance. Time will tell.

@Notabug you seem to have hit the nail on the head. It's almost as if you are a writer for these movies!

Definitely a hard no on any Erin Cahill movies for me so I didn't even pretend to turn this one on.

No question, there is a lot less posting on this thread.  I used to check this thread several times a day and post almost every day but I backed off a while ago, partially because of some low-level trolling by someone whose name I don't really see here anymore (guess they've moved on to greener pastures) but mostly because I have become much more discerning in my Hallmark watching.  Now that they've got younger stars that don't interest me, I'm not interested in watching @Notabug's repetitive stories.  I'll watch Paul Campbell, Andrew Walker, and a few others in almost anything, but today's actors, whose names I don't know and can't even find on imdb, are no reason for me to tune in.

I appreciate you writing out my exact thoughts so I didn't have to!

On another note, every Hallmark movie for the rest of time could star Lucas Bryant, Wes Brown or Kristoffer Polaha and I would die a happy couch potato.

That’s a good trio. I’ll add Ayres and Jeannotte to that list as well.

Since Hallmark is launching their new Christmas movies starting week, what are everyone’s favorite ones to rewatch on Hallmark every year?
Mine are Snow Bride, A Very Mix-Up, and The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
They are older but I think better quality than what is now shown.

Of the three mentioned above, the bolded is a Must See and the italicized is decent.  Never saw Snow Bride.

Ditto on A Very Mix-Up, and Most Wonderful Time of the Year. I also like Nine Lives of Christmas (but not the sequel),  Christmas with Holly and The Christmas Secret

And of the oldies:  November Christmas, Finding John Christmas, and my all time favorite, A Season for Miracles.  Those from the past had such great stories and great acting. Maybe that's why they are never shown again - the contrast between quality vs quantity is very sad to see.

I'll cast another vote for Snow Bride and A Very Merry Mix-Up!  They are on my always watch list, along with The Christmas Secret (which is more of a HM&M movie) and, of more recent movies, A Biltmore Christmas and Take Me Back for Christmas.

I've never posted much here because when it was busier, it felt more like a place for snark; overall, I enjoy Hallmark Christmas and don't find too much to snark about (though, of course, sometimes it's well deserved!)

A Season for Miracles is SO good!!  It's been years since I've seen it but I hope for it every winter.  Also A Christmas Wish (f/k/a Rootbeer Christmas) with Kristy Swanson & Edward Herrmann - another oldie but goodie.

I do have and know how to operate a DVR -lol- but usually choose to watch as they air.  Not sure why; it guess it feels different watching when I know others are.

I forgot about A Christmas Wish as well!  I loved Edward Hermann.

I have some on DVD but it's getting harder and harder to watch them.  They are better on a big screen plus laptops don't have players anymore. I had an old player but it doesn't hook up to my Smart TV.  Sign.

Ugh. Just watching A Maple Valley Christmas 2022. It’s a really nice movie but the actress who plays the main character erica is such a b*tch throughout pretty much the whole movie it really took away a lot for me. I don’t know that she cracked a real smile once it was always just a mad face. And she was just horrible and bratty to everybody her whole family. And poor Andrew Walker trying to warm up to her. wasn’t till last half hour or so, where people finally started to tell her off how miserable she is first her sister and then finally Andrew walker’s character. I’m hoping that this isn’t how the actress is in other movies because I’d like to give her a chance but she’s not familiar to me. I’m gonna have to look her up. Peyton List. Did anybody anybody else notice this vibe throughout this movie or is it just me?🙃

I first encountered this Peyton List on the WB show The Tomorrow People (based on an old British show of the same name that I watched as a kid. The British version aired on American tv.).
Anyhoo, I thought there was some SAG rule no two actors could have the same name, but this Peyton List and the one from Disney’s Jessie have the exact same name.
Maybe Michael J. Fox can go back in time and refuse to add a middle initial, (which I think he completely made up!) and let SAG deal with two Michael Foxes.

And it was a weird little gem of brilliance that I really enjoyed! Finally, a good movie - most of the new ones have been striking out for me.

I don't know how Dominic Sherwood ended up on Hallmark but I'm not going to complain! I thought he did a wonderful job differentiating the two characters (Malcolm was wry and charming, Brian was sweet and slightly goofy), and he was easy on the eyes as well. And speaking of, his eyes were very striking. I'd love to see more of him in future movies. Janel Parrish isn't necessarily one of my favorites (her face work is distracting) but she was fine here. I really enjoyed how the two love stories paralleled one another, and I liked that we got to know Angelique (and Malcolm) beyond her just being the troublesome ghost. The actress really made you feel for her, too. The touches of humor from the supporting cast was appreciated, and if we can only get one damn Halloween-type of movie per year, I'm glad it was a good one. 🎃

And unless I"m wrong, that was the last new non-Christmas movie of 2024, right? Sheesh. I'm firmly of the belief that Christmas belongs in December, so this is probably it for me for awhile. See you guys in a couple of months!

Adding a couple of favorite Christmas movies I didn’t see listed

- the Christmas Card; so many things to easily criticize but i love it anyway

- two Allison Sweeney movies, Good Morning Christmas with Marc Blucas and Open by Christmas with Brendan Elliot

- not a Hallmark movie but Dear Christmas with Melissa Joan Hart and Jason Priestly,  i think it was Lifetime
