Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Having to pace myself with a bag of Strawberry Chex Mix. It’s limited edition so debating if I should stock up on some bags or just enjoy while in stock. It’s up there in Beaver Nugget territory. No nasty pretzels or bagel chips mixed in, just the flavored cereal along with yoghurt covered cereal.
eta I am emailing Chex to request a peach mix for summer. Thinking also towards fall. Not pumpkin spice but maybe apple? The possibilities are endless for these fruit flavors.
eta I just emailed peach for summer and cranberry for fall/ holidays suggestion

What great ideas!

Buyer beware I guess is the order of the day but I am beyond peeved today!  I ordered a book through Amazon a few weeks ago and the wrong book was sent.  The seller though insists they sent the book I ordered.  And they kind of did after all.

The book I selected (and I know I selected the right one!!) once it arrived in my cart somehow had changed into a slightly different title by a different author.  Clearly this is a mistake by the seller or by Amazon - but I should have noticed it as well.  Dammit.

So it looks like unless I'm prepared to pay for shipping - which will likely cost about the same as the book! - I am out of luck.

Ugh, when people share memes on Facebook (or wherever else) that say something like "Facebook has been removing this picture because [some fictitious reason]!" Meanwhile, the person sharing it can't deduce that it's all nonsense, considering that

a) they found, and reposted, it on Facebook, and

b) it remains on their Facebook profile days and days later

Do these people think that they somehow were the only one strong enough to teach FB a lesson?

Similar, I have gotten multiple Facebook posts that start off with, “everyone says this is ugly”, such as something the person crafted by hand... Over and over, I’ve snoozed those accounts multiple times. They’re looking for positive feedback, likes or whatever. Just show it, say something about it.

Now that I typed it out, I’m not sure I’m making sense. 🤷🏼‍♀️

What I get often are those Won't One of My Friends Please Repost This to promote  some charity or awareness of illness or whatever and it's always ended with "I think I know who will".

I don't post on FB because someone tries to make me feel guilty!

I know what you mean too, @ginger90. It's annoying, especially because, even though I know it's dumb, I always feel really bad and sad for whatever is ugly or unwanted . And if it's an animal, I can't even deal with it. Again, I know that it's not a real thing and may even be some kind of data mining effort, but I feel awful when I see it. And then I feel dumb for feeling awful, haha!

I think a glitch might be happening with Amazon and I hope you pursue them fixing this for you. I saw a book on my kindle list that I didn’t remember getting this week when I was checking what to read. I looked at the description and I thought that’s not something I read. I always get books from the library or through Bookbub that collects deals for Kindle and Nook, I think other options also. I only get the free books offered at Bookbub. I had an email confirmation from Amazon for the book, as usual,  but I didn’t open it. I went to the amazon page and checked the receipt and it was $4.99. I knew then that I had not ordered the book. I did a return and there were several options for reason and I chose did not order. A refund was issued the next day. I had ordered a book close to the time of the wrong book and did not receive a receipt for that one.
I also noticed that Amazon has changed their buttons for purchases and books purchases are also a little bait and switch with free (totaly free), free with kindleplus, freeprime. You have to be very careful now when choosing the options because the 1-click purchase (always the “free” option) button isn’t the free button.

I am not setting this up clearly if you aren’t familiar with kindle or real book purchases so will stop describing it. I do feel like you probably did get some kind of glitch though and again, I hope you go challenge them more to not have you being charged wrongly.

People who won't apologize or back down even when they are clearly wrong!  My niece works at a school that posts occasional pictures of their activities on twitter.

Anyway Thursday they posted a few pictures of the kindergarteners having a spring party complete with an egg hunt.  That wasn't what raised someone's ire - some of the children had made little construction paper bonnets and other head gear as part of the craft component of the party and this woman went ballistic accusing the school of "cultural appropriation" and being insensitive and so on and so on.

As it turns out she had mistaken headbands with bunny ears for headbands with a feather.  When this was pointed out to her instead of an apology she posted "well just remember it could have been so don't do that".  Seriously?  Sigh.

Bunnies have two ears.  And very likely, the bonnets and ears were in pastel colours.  It would have been pretty obvious.

There has been a concerted effort for quite a while when dealing with accusations that turn out to be hoaxes or just false accusations that the response is “ it doesn’t matter if it didn’t happen, what matters is the seriousness of the accusation”.

A Narcissist's Prayer

That didn't happen.

And if it did, it wasn't that bad.

And if it was, that's not a big deal.

And if it is, that's not my fault.

And if it was, I didn't mean it.

And if I did...

You deserved it.

My pet peeve is cleaning my new Samsung French door refrigerator.  It's a great refrigerator, overall, and it replaced a smaller one.  I was "lucky" enough to have damage caused by our oil company (don't ask), so we had to rip out part of our kitchen.  I was able to redo to have a wider fridge on the oil company's dime.  The really cool thing is it's counter depth and it has the French door upper cooling area, so we can see everything easily.  The old fridge had us stooping to see inside and reaching back into the into the huge depth and always losing stuff inside.  That was a giant pet peeve, but I lived with it for years.

BUT, I can't believe how hard it is to remove the central shelf and the glass insert for cleaning.  You know how you spill something in the fridge, and you have to lift out the glass to clean up the stuff that seeped between the glass and the piece holding it.  You can't just lift this one out like every other brand of refrigerator I've ever had.

Took me watching several YouTube videos and a call to Samsung yesterday to get it done.  You know you have a bad design when multiple people have to publish YouTube how-tos.  BTW, the manual doesn't show you either.

First, I needed excessive strength to push in the two plastic tabs locking the shelf in place.  I was afraid of breaking them.  Once you've lifted out the entire shelf unit, you have to remove two plastic clips keeping the glass in place. The guy on the phone at Samsung did not actually know how to do the second part, so I had to teach him after watching the video!

Fun fact, he could temporarily access my cell phone camera to see what I was doing and walk me through the steps, then I demonstrated the shelf clips for him.

@EtheltoTillie At first I was envying you having a fridge where you don't have to stoop over to see what's inside (grrrr...hate that). But those shelves would've done me in, big time! We got the good ol' freezer on top because I didn't want to bend over to retrieve stuff from the freezer (had several back surgeries). Refrigerators used to be so easy. Smart of you, though, to figure out how to maneuver those shelves & clips (& very kind of you to teach the customer service rep how to do it 🌺).

You forgot "and then I'm like 'what do you mean?'" and she's like "well, you know..."

Why can't people use the verb "to say"?  Why do they replace it with "to be (like)", or "to go(and then I go 'what do you mean'? and she goes 'well, you know'" ?)

I bought a new washing machine last year.  After having it for a few months there came a time when I wanted to do a spin only cycle.  I tried the power button and then the setting that said "spin cycle only."  You would think that would work, right?  Nope!  I could't figure it out and there was nothing in the manual that came with the washer. I finally found a video on YouTube about my particular washer, from someone who had spent 45 minutes on the phone with customer service about this issue.  The solution - turn on the power button and press "spin cycle only" for at least 5 seconds to get a time display to show up.  Easy once you're let into the secret!  Why wouldn't they put this in the manual???

Another refrigerator peeve:  the geniuses who had designed my old kitchen had installed the refrigerator too close to one wall, so you couldn't open the door all the way.  In order to clean that refrigerator, you had to pull the whole thing out enough to move it to the side so you could open the door wide enough to remove the drawers and shelves.  These are basic design concepts, folks!  Don't do that!  (BTW, this is a very large kitchen, and none of this was done because of lack of space.)

With regard to poor kitchen design. As I've scanned the offerings on Realtor, I am amazed by how many times I see you've described @EtheltoTillie. I also don't understand the logic of putting the refrigerator right next to the stove.

It rarely happens but it happened again the other day, my car alarmed for no apparent reason. It was broad daylight and there wasn't anyone around  but it went ballistic anyway.

However, what I'd like to know is why the car alarm designers believe that popping open the trunk would do any good. I mean, if an actual wannabee car thief or burglar had been hanging around, would any of them have just been too startled to have carried through their intended crime JUST by seeing the car trunk flying open on its own?

Why the face?

I'm in a rental so the type of fridge I have is a bit beyond my control.  The bottom left vegetable drawer can't be opened unless I budge the whole thing.  I keep my chocolate there.

I have an ancient (late '90s) refrigerator, the typical freezer on top, refrigerator on the bottom configuration.  It's fine, but when I finally remodel my kitchen, I will probably get a side-by-side design.  My parents had one of those for years, and I love it, because you have top and bottom for both fridge and freezer, so for each you can put the stuff you'll least need to access on the bottom.

My parents currently have one with the French door refrigerator on the top and drawer freezer on the bottom, and my dad and I both dislike it -- while everything in the refrigerator is at eye level, to get anything out of the freezer, you have to stoop over, which is not bad (and it makes sense, as you're in the fridge more than the freezer), but you have deep drawer compartments rather than shelves, so you wind up digging around.  My mom uses it most, and she likes it, so that's what they have, but I don't want one.

My complaint with every single refrigerator on the market is inadequate crisper drawer space (which is my one hesitation with switching to side-by-side; I might decide another top freezer configuration is best).  The majority of my refrigerator content is produce, but the majority of space available is open shelving.

I resisted the bottom freezer design at first for the reason you say, but in the end, any disadvantage for me is outweighed by the ease of using the upper refrigerator compartment.  I don't have too much in the freezer, and it's pretty easy to find what I need.  Especially since it's a pull out, rather than a reach in, and there's an internal extra drawer.   My old top freezer also had no lights.  You might like the Samsung model I got, as it has a middle drawer that can be switched between freezer and refrigerator temp.  I am currently using it as refrigerator space.

In my apartment I have a side-by-side built in, the kind that is very tall and wide (42-inch).  It's really wonderful, but it is very expensive and wasn't going to work for my house remodel.  They're not making many of the regular size side-by-side fridges now, as the French door style has overtaken it in popularity.

Years ago, my parents went from freezer on the top to a side by side. I swear you took a chance of at least a broken  toe when you’d open the freezer. When my mother went and got one with the freezer on the bottom, I was thrilled I tell you. All was not safe though. They moved the side by side to the basement.

Current peeves:

  • Manufactured drama or outrage both in TV shows where this shouldn't exist (aka cooking shows), and IRL. If I'm watching L&O, or another "drama", I expect drama (that's manufactured, because it's a fictional TV show). I just saw a commercial for a cooking show that has everyone living in the same house and competing against each other. Pass.
  • The proverbial beating a dead horse.
  • Victim blaming / Victim mentality.
  • People who don't MYOB
  • When I eat a pink jelly belly and think it's cotton candy but it's bubble gum 🤮There is a key on the jar but the two pinks are so similar it is hard to tell them apart. I usually make my own mix but I couldn't pass up the giant container on sale at Costco.

I'm not a fan of side-by-side refrigerators because each side is not wide enough for some things I want to refrigerate or freeze.  My parents have a French door fridge, and I like it okay, but it is easy to lose things in the freezer compartment.  My tiny little house doesn't have enough room for a French door fridge.

Yes, that's a classic complaint about side by side.  I have to put some things in smaller containers to get them in the side by side.  Each of us has our own personal storage quirks.

I always thought the counter depth refrigerators were a nice look, until our extended family stayed at a vacation rental that had one, and we realized it was too shallow to hold a pizza box or a lot of other family sized things.

My favorite by far is the French door style, but my current peeve is that I apparently bought a lemon of a model in 2009 (according to at least two different repair guys).  There’s something going on that causes it to ice up so the fan can’t distribute the cold air, so I have to take a hot air gun to it once or twice a day to keep it from completely icing up. It does still manage to stay cold enough, so far, so I have a little time to shop for a new one. But I know that the next step is going to be replace, not repair.

We do try and and it doesn't always work.  My son generally eats more varieties of food than other kids his age, but unless I give him overnight oats every single day, he might not get the extra fibre he (apparently) needs, according to his doctor.  Children his age need just as much fibre as a grown woman (25 g)!!!!!

I used to think so but last week for my birthday I wanted Taco Time but they were closed so my husband went to McDonalds. The fries were terrible! Funnily enough, my plain hamburger was really good.

KFC battered and Arby’s crinkle fries have overtaken Mickey D’s. Zaxby’s are better also. Weiner King’s, especially their fry delight option (cheese sauce, hotdog chili, sour cream, and finely diced onions) are shoe string and better than Mickey D’s.
Down towards the western part of the southeast bottom part of NC,Whiteville,Lumberton are examples, there is a regional french fry at many mom and pop old fashioned grills/ joints. They slice whole potatoes, dredge/roll them in all purpose flour and fry them up. They get all crunchy flakey crispy outside and soft potatoey inside, almost like fried chicken,  nothing needed but a sprinkle of salt and a lot of ketchup.
While I don’t eat french fries a lot, I do have some favorites and a high bar for taste. Life is too short to mess with bad french fries.

Journalists who ask disingenuous questions they obviously already know the answers to.  Terry Gross is an expert at it.  Question: "Have you ever met anyone who owns a De Havilland aeroplane?"  Answer: "Well, as it happens, I do actually own one myself."

Just say "I understand that you own a De Havilland."

(Terry Gross is also a pet peeve, but that's a whole other discussion.)

FIrst choice:  put it on Paypal as I will only have to update the card there and take care of a bunch of them at once.

Second choice:  the card that not everyone takes....

Third choice: the other main card....

Our local McDonalds has pretty good fries. I think it may vary by location.  I've noticed that with other franchises.

My favorite fries now are the ones my husband makes. I bought a fry cutter, and he tosses the fries in olive oil, cooks them in the air fryer, and then sprinkles them with salt and garlic. Soooo good.

When my card got hacked, I was able to cancel it and got the new number to use for all online purchases before the physical card arrived. Can you do something like that?
