Oh, MUNICHNARK, the world has turned into a scary, crazy place. No one, anywhere is safe. So very sorry that you are going through this. I hope that the gunmen are caught soon, and relative safety restored. My heart aches for family and friends who were involved in this terrorist act. Hugs to you and yours.

I'm having a good thought for all there MunichNark.  Crazy is everywhere now, and it ain't regular crazy either.  It's evil.

Come sit next to me Sew Sumi and jcbrown...I have cookies.  I know my situation isn't ideal but I would find both of yours really really hard.  I hope that everything works out for the both of your families.  I thank whatever higher beings that my grandmother did not put up a fuss when it came time last year for the nursing home, in fact she rather likes it.  She likes that she doesn't have to cook, she doesn't have to pick up, and they have activities there.  Oh, she gets bored from time to time but for the most part it's been an easy transition.  She's always been a sweet lady, always been interested in life and everything that goes on around her - even if she can't remember names and faces all the time now, nor details at all but she's at least going gently into the good night, which I am supremely grateful for.

Now the male parent has been diagnosed with prostate cancer - oh yay.  We have to go for the radiology consult in a couple of weeks, but I've made it really abundantly clear that I cannot drive every day from where we live to the VA Hospital for treatment, and it's five days a week for six weeks. He's probably going to have to catch the transport from the local VA clinic, or we'll have to see if the VA will transfer his care closer to home here.  I know the treatment itself doesn't last very long, only a matter of minutes but I cannot drive up there an hour, be there a half hour, and then drive another hour back home every day.  At least if we can get him local on the VA's bill for just this it will help enormously.  More so for me mentally than anything else...had enough of cancer for one year.

I'm ready to watch some Olympics and just sit and enjoy the opening ceremony - you know there is going to be some serious dancing going on.

@MunichNark, so sorry to hear about what's happening in Munich right now. Myself and two of my dearest friends had a beautiful time in your city. Much love and prayers.

@Sew Sumi and @jcbrown, so sorry to hear about your challenges in caring for family members. Those issues take on a life of their own. Remember to take care of yourselves because if you don't take care of your needs, you won't be able to care for someone else's.

Thanks guys, even a digital thought does mean a lot. It's comforting.

Very short night, it was eerie last night. I live in a fairly noisy area (at times) and have been known to complain and moan that it is noisy, due to cars and people and what not. Last night was the quietest I have ever experienced......it feel weird.

Seems it was a lone gunman, with a migrant background, apparently mentally disturbed. So "just" one, not 3 as previously thought. It feels a bit weird today, can't quite stir me to do much I think. I do have experience of terrorism, what with irish troubles, but somehow, this was so damn close to home.

9 people dead, plus gunman. It's such a waste.

All the same, happy Birthday to those concerned, and luck and love to everyone else

My thoughts are with you.  What I would like to know is when the world  officially when crazy . Do you think we can return  2016 and get a different  year? Because  all I all this has not been a good year.

@MunichNark, hugs and comfort to you and to the families affected by last week's tragedy.

i think we should have a big fat weekend slumber party and all bring our favorite "whatever".  I have a specialty drink (lemonade, Sprite and vodka).  And world class chocolate chip cookies.  And warm chipotle dip with tortilla chips.  We'll crank up Bob Seeger and Abba and Queen.  Bring pictures or videos of our families (I have a WONDERFUL one of my ancient Daddy doing the chicken dance at a school function with my grands!).  And our favorite movies.  We'll have a table set up where you drop off your favorite book of all time (with a note inside of why you love it so much).  Drop your book, pick up someone else's.  We'll have a hairdresser, a little mani-pedi spot and a bra fitter.  Maybe even a palm reader.

Wouldnt that just be heaven?

HAPPYFATCHICK, I'll come! I'll come! Since you already called chocolate chip cookies, I'll bring chocolate Devil's food cake with my mom's famous chocolate buttercream frosting (a little bit of coffee added is the secret ingredient). And spicy buffalo chicken wings. And of course, margaritas. Can we add the Rolling Stones to the song mix? Honestly, that sounds like so much fun.

MUNICHNARK, you are feeling exactly what so many of us are today. This is not the world we thought we knew. When I turned on the TV this morning, I thought somehow they were accidentally broadcasting a previous newscast about shooting in Florida. But no, it was real. So very sorry for your country, and everywhere affected by this craziness. Hugs and comfort to all.

seriously, another shooting? i have not had tv or radio on all day - grandkids are back again.

can i just say something here among friends? i REALLY hate people that make racist comments and blame certain groups of people for all the bad that is happening. and i am not even referring to all the ISIS stuff...just general racist stuff that we hear about in America. i just told off a stranger on f/b that blamed a riot on all the 'extra blacks and mexicans' that have been visiting the resort town she frequents. sometimes i just don't understand how people live with themselves when they talk like this.  i wasn't raised to look at different colors of people and see a difference.  i just don't get it. thankfully my children and grandchildren are also being raised 'colorblind' and to respect all people.

I want in at the party too HFC, but my specialties don't involve food or drink. Can I still come?

This is kinda funny - I just got a meme (is that what you call those things) from my DIL today making a joke about the people who get assigned paper goods for every party.

Sure, you can still come!  Gonna be mostly females, you can bring toilet paper.

Well, I heard today my job is safe, although now I'll be reporting to a colleague that used to be on my level, so I'm pissed about that. Plus, 3 other people in my department (2 of whom are my friends), got let go. It was a sucky day. The only bright side is that I got a request for a second interview for a job I applied to last week.

Yay, Lookeyloo is going to mix up her Cosmos! I'm in with some Malbec, manchego, and cheese cookies and a gluten free treat.

I make some pretty awesome appetizers as well...my latest favorite is one I came up with for mushrooms stuffed with caramelized onions and baked with a gorgonzola topping. Can I come? Oh, and we have a number of batches of old Polish recipes for cordials made from cherries, raspberries and honey/spice (with the honey coming from our own hives!) in the making. If that helps :)

Oooooh, yes please.

Ohmygosh, Jynnan, you are SOOOO in!!!  Made my mouth water just thinking about the mushrooms.  I make a pretty mean stuffed mushroom myself, and I don't know why, but I only make them at Thanksgiving.  (They never make it to the table, they're small and portable and everybody grabs one - or two).  Yours sound divine.

i just finished reading 600 Hours of Edward and have already managed to forget the author (Craig Lancaster maybe?).  I loved every minute of it.  I HATE series books and never get them if I see "Book 1".  There is a sequel to this book, though, and I'm definitely getting that one.  I don't think the author meant for it to be a series, I think it just happened.

Also, I've become obsessed with recycling clothing.  It's ridiculous, I know.  I'm a creator, and love to sew, so I have (you know...) fabric.  But I made my granddaughter a skirt using the bib from a pair of overalls that were too short for her and adding a blue/white chevron skirt.  (Thank you, Pinterest).  It was so stinking cute, I got carried away.  I've since made her a skirt from an old pair of jeans, a shirt from an adult linen shirt, and a dress from a dress shirt.  These are cute!!!  (And I'm fussy about dressing the grands).  All to get ready for school again.  I can't BELIEVE it's that time already, they just got out!

  • Love 5

HAPPYFATCHICK, I love what you are doing with recycled clothing for the Grands. They are so lucky.

It reminded me of an amazing video I just saw about what happens to our clothes when we discard them for recycling. The joy and peace on these beautiful workers' faces is infectious. But it also makes me feel guilty about how easily I can buy and discard my clothes.

Happy, you know I like to sew too, but, am mostly doing quilts lately. I did make myself some tops to wear to the gym - that "float" over the problem areas instead of clinging.  That fold over elastic is pretty nifty.  And I like to collect vintage black singers and tinker with them til they work.  Except for the electrical, but I have two machines that fit in my treadle cabinet.  I have a nice collection now but my very favorite machine is a dinky mechanical Brother that my son got in Costco about 14 years ago.  It will sew through anything with any thread and not skip a beat.

  • Love 1

@lookeyloo, I so wish I had your tolerance for tinkering.  I have a Brother machine I've tinkered with for years (I loved that machine) that is now a door stop until I can get it officially "fixed".  I'd like to pass that one on, it was the Battlestar in its day.  That machine has sewn around the world.  Twice.  My two most reliable embroidery machines are Brother (Ruby and Pearl).  I also have a double head SWF (Thelma and Louise), but they are not my peeps.  They sew out well, work hard and do what they need to, but they aren't Brother machines.  My regular semi-heavy-duty sewing machine is a Brother as well.  Obviously, I'm a fan.

somewhere in the middle of dementia, I discovered my mother still had the ability to sew.  It was the "riding a bike" thing.  She hadn't a clue what she was sewing, but her brain still clicked and as long as I handed her pieces, she could sew and cut it.  I'd hand her another.  I'd sit right beside her and hand her pieces as long as her brain could take it.  It was stupefying for me, handing her pieces to add onto the chain, but it kept her mind rocking slightly forward.  Then I'd have her go iron that strip, and we'd start another.  All that to say this: I have 4 fully complete quilt tops.  I couldn't make her stick with the quilting process to turn it into a "quilt", but we got the tops done.  Top shelf of my closet is stacked with them.

  • Love 3

@GeeGolly, I was teasing about the TP.  My husby is actually a tad OCD about TP; the cabinets in the bigger bathroom here are always stuffed full.  Like we could supply Costco.  Nobody has to bring TP.  I'm sorry if you thought I was being mean.  As long as you don't check with my one DIL (or my SIL who needed to be so far away from me, he moved his family to a third world country...or that one kid with his waistband at his knees on a skateboard in traffic that I yelled at the other day from the safety of my moving car...) I have references - I'm not mean!!!

but the paper goods assignee thing reminds me of my unmarried (VERY batchelor) cousin who is always with us.  He's our paper goods guy.  And buns.  Once he came to Thanksgiving and I guess felt bad about not having an assignment (we don't use paper at Thanksgiving).  He shows up with a pot of noodles.  I don't mean yummy noodles, cooked to perfection ready to go.  I mean he brought a pot with a package of noodles in it.

also, I have this friend who is banned from bring potluck to office parties for life because she's just weird.  Her favorite dishes generally involve Spam.  I'm not a hater, but Spam is a last resort backup around here.  Just a hair above salmon patties.
