HBO are doing a Westworld series: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/hbos-westworld-ordered-series-741066

Quote

It's official: HBO is moving forward with its Westworld adaptation.

The drama, based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film and written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, stars Anthony Hopkins in his first series-regular role as an inventor who runs an adult amusement park populated by lifelike robots. HBO made the announcement Monday via Twitter, with the series coming in 2015.

The drama hails from J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk's Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot Productions, with the duo exec producing alongside Jerry Weintraub,Nolan (who directed the pilot)and Joy. Kathy Lingg will co-EP and Athena Wickham is a producer on the drama. David Coatsworth is set as a co-EP and line producer, with Susie Ekins set as a co-producer. Westworld hails from Bad Robot, Jerry Weintraub Productions and Kilter Films.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the show's androids — played by castmembers including James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton — can be killed off and return with completely different personas, allowing actors to play many characters. That creative device, one top talent agent said, helped HBO attract a premier cast (which also includes Ed Harris, Miranda Otto and Jeffrey Wright). And unlike the actors on such anthology series as FX's American Horror Story and HBO's own True Detective, which reboot themselves every season, the cast of Westworld is signing multiyear deals.

Does anyone know when HBONow will be available outside of Apple products? I want to whittle down my cable bill ASAP, but I don't want to have to invest in ANOTHER device. I have too many already!!!

Do you mean HBOGo? I heard HBO is looking into a streaming service (or read rumors of such!). But to use HBOGo, I think, as of now, you need to have a cable provider.

HBO Now is the new thing. I think it'll be available without Apple TV after three months.

While I'm sure the people at Apple are savoring the exclusive HBO Now deal, I think it's short-sighted, and it makes me wonder if it is feasible long term. Of course, this may boost Apple TV sales which, I guess, is part of the goal, but I think it'll only alienate those who use Android products or have other streaming devices like Roku. Which I admittedly do.

I won't spend another $69 for a streaming player when the Roku works fine. HBO's loss.

The impression I've gotten is that the Apple TV deal is kind of a test launch. They're still in negotiations with other streaming services. I think they're just testing it out on one platform to try and get all the kinks out before it goes into wider distribution in 3 months.

Ladies and gentlemen, the network whose first-run programming originally consisted of 1st and Ten and the rise of Mike Tyson.... is now going to be the exclusive first-run broadcaster (and streamer).... of Sesame Street

After a nine-month window, the show will be available free of charge to PBS and its member stations.

I am not sure what to make of this part:

Episodes of Sesame Street will continue to be made available, uninterrupted, as part of the PBS KIDS service on PBS member stations.

Wow, this shocks me. I always thought it was the jewel in the PBS crown. The end of an era!

I just saw that story about Sesame Street on CNN's website. The CNN story explained that the episodes would air on PBS 9 months after airing on HBO.

It made me sad (even though I don't have children) because it's too bad that such an educational show that has benefited a wide number of children from all different backgrounds is now going to be available on an "ability to pay" basis, at least in terms of the immediate experience. Maybe it doesn't really make any difference to a 2-year-old whether they see Elmo do something new now or 9 months from now, but I feel suspicious that this is just the first step towards completing monetizing the property.

Also, maybe I should take this as my sign that I should be donating to PBS, which I always mean to do, but then forget to follow through on.

Since the departure of True Blood and Boardwalk Empire, HBO's must-see Sunday night programming has lost a lot of its luster.  That being said, Game of Thrones is the flag bearer of Sunday night but True Detective and The Leftovers are pale imitations of the grandeur that was The Sopranos and Deadwood

I agree. True Detective S2 was pretty bad, Westworld looks questionable, and the Leftovers is nothing a but a huge bummer with good actors (who deserve better). The ray of light for me is Vinyl. It looks cool as heck.

I get that not every show can be a winner, but HBO is in a slump this year as far as dramas go.

Color me impressed.  With Terence Winter, Mick Jagger, and Martin Scorsese involved in Vinyl, I'll definitely be tuning in.  I hope Ray Romano has a very miniscule role, can't stand him.  Find out more, if you love 1970's era rock.

The jury is still out on Westworld, as far as I'm concerned. "'Westworld' is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin."  Huh?

I don't have a link handy, but apparently some of the extras and non-principal cast members had to sign a contract that specifically allowed "genital-on-genital contact." Sounds like traditional, old-fashioned sin to me.

Someone said he tweeted Jan 15.

Even still, that would mean no Sunday series all month, so about a month and a half with no new episodes on Sunday.

Of course we know they have a lot of stuff in the pipeline, including possibly daily content from Bill Simmons.

But usually they stick in a mini series or a HBO produced movie in these periods when they're not airing new episodes.

I think this spells doom for HBO and its quality programming as we know it.  Lets remember that Game of Thrones for example didn't begin as a ratings juggernaut.  Somebody at HBO took a chance on it when they green lit it back in the day.

I don't see any of the At&t corporate shills having either the experience or the creativity nurturing future quality programming on HBO.

The big losers are going to be the creators of content and the people who want to watch this content.

I don’t see an existing thread for this show, but I just wanted to mention that HBO is finally putting From the Earth to the Moon out on BluRay, with remastered special effects. I just ordered mine from Amazon—much cheaper at $23 than the nearly $100 I spent on the dvd set back in the mid-‘90s. (Dad is going to get that set—I don’t know if he even owns a BluRay player.)

I have HBO on my cable system, and I can access HBO Max on my iPad. Question: what should I binge?

I mean, I know there’s a ton of good stuff, lots of animated content for my geeky ass, and I don’t mind all of the purple. But I never get around to watching stuff. I’ve seen all of Harley Quinn, the first Adventure Time movie, Wonder Woman 1984, and little else. I’m just wondering what you guys are into.

I do have two suggestions for anyone reading this: Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. The former wound up continued nicely at DC Universe, the latter was neglected because the live-action movie was a dud. HBO Max also has great anime via Crunchyroll. I know, I know, I’ve seen 2-3 Studio Ghibi movies, and I should fix that.

Because I'm into comic book shows like you: I watched all of Titans and while I liked it, it felt continuously like a set-up for a show we never quite got to. The characters are good, though Batman-focused, but I liked some alternate takes on people we've glimpsed at in other shows (mainly the Arrowverse).

I'm also rewatching The OC for the 50th time because there's just something about those early 2000s primetime soaps I love. Also it's nice to have a show where it doesn't revolve around demons, or demon hunters, or superheroes, or other sci-fi things.

HBO Max had a pop-up that reminded me that it's the 50th anniversary for the network this year. I looked it up on YouTube and found this nice little tribute:

I don't really believe that HBO today is on the same level as its Sopranos peak era in the 2000s, but I'd still like to believe that it's still quality television on some level. So, as a tribute to the network, I'll quote something I've written eight months ago:

Quote

I mean, this is the same network that produced:

  • The Sopranos
  • The Wire
  • Oz
  • Six Feet Under
  • Sex and the City
  • Big Love
  • Curb your enthusiasm
  • John Adams
  • Rome
  • Generation Kill
  • Westworld
  • Deadwood
  • True Detective
  • Band of Brothers
  • Chernobyl
  • The Leftovers
  • Boardwalk Empire
  • And let's not forget, Succession

Sure, many of those shows are over 10 years, but they still defined many of the elements that modern television emulate today, especially freaking Sopranos.

Game of Thrones is unanimously considered flawed with its latter four seasons, but it still brought event television to the modern family. It still managed to capture the attention on a global scale, something few network TV in America could say the same. Most people outside the US knows what Game of Thrones is even if they haven't even watched it, just like how most people know what Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is. I don't think even Stranger Things has that kind of universal reach (especially with its references to American culture).

And to go back to my huge list above, it also shows that HBO is capable of producing excellent television across multiple genres, not just crime drama like The Wire and True Detective, but also a romance drama for women (Sex and the City) and a morbid drama set in a funeral home (Six Feet Under). HBO knows range.

So yes, I'll recite the same company motto that pop ups whenever I tuned into HBO on cable back in the 2000s: "HBO: Simply the best." Because it truly is.

Not really a unanimous opinion.

*shrugs* Eh. I said it was "arguably flawed" in my original post on Reddit, then someone corrected me and said it was unanimously flawed. lol I'll just leave it to open interpretation.

HBO Max is removing Westworld and The Nevers from its service, essentially canceling the latter, even though it sounds like the 2nd half of its first season is in the can and may be seen elsewhere. We pay $15 a month for HBO/HBO Max and they can't even keep some of their own shows on the service. The Deadline article seems to suggest we may see the shows on another service in the company down the road, like an ad-supported streaming service, but for now, this allows the company to not pay residuals. I understand canceling stuff, but removing it is a sucky thing for both the folks who created and worked on the programs and for subscribers who likely assumed the programming they will eventually watch will remain on the streaming service of its parent

I guess I'll be getting rid of it. I'm not paying $20 a month, and I don't like what they've been doing with their shows/screwing over the actors involved in the shows they ditched.

From what I read elsewhere, the pricing is not going up, and that indeed seems to be the case for most people. We get ad-free, and that price is not going up for those who only need two concurrent streams. (We only ever need one at a time.) The new $20 tier is for those who need four concurrent streams. (And honestly, that seems fair to me. It's analogous to Netflix's higher pricing for those with shared accounts.)

And the 3rd option is also for 4K UHD as well

This article talks in further detail about what changes they are making to improve the website itself (towards the bottom of the article) https://deadline.com/2023/04/max-programming-pricing-features-hbo-streaming-service-1235323098/

I'm thinking it might be better to split this topic once the naming change happens

What a blunder to get rid of the HBO name.  That name has meant quality television for over 40 years.  It's like Disney deciding to change it's name.

it would actually be like initially naming Disney+ Marvel+. The HBO folks reportedly don’t want HBO in the streamer name and reportedly many users are turned off by the HBO name because let’s face it, HBO is boutique. But HBO itself isn’t going away. It will still be the name of the linear channel and will be a hub on Max. I just think Max is too generic but I guess they didn’t want to name it Warner+ or WarnerMax

HBO Max is now officially "Max" with a quicker and cleaner interface. On the website, I logged into Max.com and all my login information was there from the old site. I just couldn't find where I had written down my account information and had to change my password because I couldn't remember it; everything is now fine and dandy and written down in my accounts notebook

They are there. The hubs are gone. Instead go to Brand Spotlight: HBO MAX Originals eight brands i think till you can click on TCM. Slow and annoying but they are there. The row of brands is somewhere in the middle of the Home page. Or just go directly to Movies, top of screen, and they are there, but the genres are so generic, no classics, no international, though they are there. A to Z, all movies, add everything you want to your list. Criterion Channel has a great selection of classic movies, many have or will air on TCM. It's less expensive in the long run and a million times easier to navigate. I keep both for the  HBO series and the old Cinemax series that are now called MAX. Plus the brilliant Studio Ghibli movies.
