Season Two: Bring The Popcorn and Discuss!

Recommended Posts

Lordonia, it's still very much a popular movie with people who collect things. I buy/sell Hollywood wardrobe and a customer spent big bucks for something Linda wore during filming. It's crazy.

So, you have a unique appreciation for the can of green pea soup signed by Linda Blair - "prized possession".  :-)

The three daughters and Dad screaming while watching Constantine was good but my favorite part was the dog's reaction. "Wha? Who? Do I need to panic?"

I arranged my morning so I could finally catch this season's 4th episode, and having read this thread I kept an eye out for the dog's reaction. I love the pets of the People's Couch. I skipped the last 7 minutes or so that appeared to be just about that awful experiments on dogs; I don't need to watch people watch that. I think it was last week, but I liked the Zeno dad pausing to repent for his feelings on watching the execution on the zombie show (I think, I don't watch that show).

I also liked a bit I saw of Kandi's marriage on the RHOA, and Julie was holding up the long haired black and gold dog, and repeating the vows to him. And then Brandy told her that the vows were binding and Julie made a great face. I might have watched that bit online, not sure what episode it was from.

When I heard the premise of this show I thought it sounded so stupid, but I love this show, these people and their pets. Except for the lion. That story is pretty weird.

"We need to go there (to Monkey Island)!"

(incredulously) "Do we?"

"When do we take over the Hamptons?"

"When they leave!"

"An experimental theater group in Prague does a lot of blacklight stuff..."

"Did you see a lot of theatre in Prague?"

I swear, Blake from Team Gay Couch should chat with rich old, "monkeys are pesky when you're on safari," lady.

"No one goes to New York to be happy."

("Your mom was driving and some guy rolled down her window and asked for her number/wrote down her license plate.")

"What was mom driving?"

..."I don't know...a Honda Prelude."

Just Bed Dad's delivery of that one line killed me.

"It feels better!" *Zeno dad talking about why a laugh track is needed on a sitcom*

"It's not bonobos. It's boYESbos."

"I don't love anyone that much!"

"She's the mother of the Red Hot Chili Peppers."

So many laugh out loud funny moments tonight. Loving the older ladies, especially the middle lady wanting to see The Biggest Loser trainer in a wet shirt and the formerly rich blonde's epic, lowkey shade. It cracked me up when one of the Bed Family sons finally understood the meaning of the title of The Biggest Loser. The Zeno mom spitting out her martini, Julie laughing at their chihuahua missing the chip and slipping, everyone freaking out at The Blacklist, and the three BFFs all frowning when the guy from Vanderpump Rules had the lame "Honda Civic selfie" comeback.

Those are just a few of my favorite moments. I really enjoyed this episode.

People's Couch and Vanderpump Rules equal match made in heaven.

Stassi, from Vanderpump Rules:  "I went to New York to be happy."

Scott:  "No one goes to New York to be happy."

It's almost as though Bravo created Vanderpump Rules so that the couchies could make fun of them.

I love this show, my new favorite show!  It's seriously the only show I sit there at laugh with.  The last episode brought me to tears!  I literally howled about the Bed Family story about when the  Bed Mom was young, the hot guy and the mom driving the Prelude.   Yup!

Bravo to Bravo, what a unique show!

The Chihuahuas are so tiny that they look like odd appendages popping up everywhere. Julie frequently holds one in each arm up against her chest, which must be uncomfortable, but which you just know the Chihuahuas require.

Late to the party. Loooove this show. Might have been a repeat from last season, but I loved when the bed dad was talking about the spider laying eggs in his arm. The absolute disinterest ("here goes dad with that story again") was really funny. I like Julie and Brandie - they give good snark without it feeling gratuitous to being on camera. I want the Zeno family to adopt me. I so want to hang out on the couch with them!

"She's Amadeus.... or she's Beethoven.... or she's that old woman from Heart."

This was the best line of the night hands down!

You just know Sam had pictures of naked guys on his phone.

I think little Sam is hiding something. I hope he has a password on that phone! I did like how chill he was over the spilled pumpkin butter ("Did anyone die? Was anyone hurt?")

The only show they watched this week that I watch is Vanderpump Rules. But I like that they show all these wacky shows - I get a sense of what the best parts without the commitment.

I did cringe though when the Zenos talked about the laugh track. And...that's why we still have the laugh track on sitcoms. So people know when to laugh. Sigh. I still love them though!

Please, Bravo, if you really love me, please, please, please send Scott, Blake and Emerson to SUR for drinks and dinner and a running commentary.  It would be like having Christmas morning 365 days in a row, with Santa, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and RDJ in attendance.

The Dad with the three daughters and Viszla, who kind of looks like Capt Lee from Below Deck, must have taken some pep pills this week.  I've never seen him contribute so much.  His glee at "Funderland!"  And then "Go Go Jason Waterfalls!"

I suggest for the April Fools edition they just scramble the couchies without comment, so it's one of the old ladies and Mr. Zeno and a sister and the dark haired chihuahua lady in the bed, and another old lady and one of the gay friends and a bed son on the Zeno's couch, etc.

A couchie scramble would be great! I think bed mom Julie and chihuahua Julie would be fun together. Give Blake, Emerson and Scott the Zenos snacks and see if they break down and eat.

I did cringe though when the Zenos talked about the laugh track.

What did they call it? They flew all around "laugh track" but never landed on it.

"Mechanical laugh"!

I've had a terrible day, so I keep thinking of this Bed Dad gem from last week: "Everyone has a dream they can make their own beef jerky. And start their own business. And then they taste it and it's terrible. And then their dream dies." Hysterical.

Hava, I think they film in their actual homes, according to the link I posted above. And the show started with people talking about who/how they watch TV, so I think that part is true. As for their reactions, I tend to believe them. I am now catching myself and my own reactions when I am watching my shows. :)

Clearly it's not ALL of their homes when it's pairings like Julie and Brandy (who's married according to her bio) or the 3 gay guys (who don't really seem like roommates to me).

Actually here's the situation with Julie and Brandy, according to that LA Daily News article linked upthread:

Brandy Howard and Julie Goldman are writing partners and best friends. Brandy is married, straight and lives in Burbank. Julie is gay and lives in Sherman Oaks, but one of the many things they have in common, besides wry senses of humor, is a love of television.

As for how legit this is?  I'd say so-so.  It's my belief they're given requirements by the producers beyond merely which shows to watch.  We in fact often see them pretending it's their decision to watch these particular shows, and that's annoying--because it's clearly not true.  Beyond that, what we often see are parallel comments and reactions from different couches.  I doubt those are exactly scripted, but they are clearly given notes about topics to talk about, and even some leading questions to ask each other or react to candidly.  I'd call it "semi scripted".

The one aspect I don't like is how many of these "average Americans" seem to link up to showbiz (but it's almost inevitable because they are all in LA, and most LA casting agents are hacks who barely even try to go outside the same circles of people to cast).  Julie and Brandy, as amusing as they are, are in show biz. All three of the gay guys are in showbiz.  Dad Zeno is arguably adjacent to showbiz (he's a former singer who's now apparently an artist).   Those are just the Couchers they ADMIT are in showbiz--certainly more of them might be and simply not have it be their current primary employment.

Funny you mention locales, Kromm, since I was thinking about the apartment building they show when the older ladies are watching. It looks a lot like an apartment building in the Los Feliz area of L.A. where the elderly rich reside. :)

I also agree is has to be semi-scripted with notes for them about the shows, since it's pretty obvious they don't all watch certain shows on a regular basis. The older women are a good example of this, with the middle one always seeming to be lost on the plot or what the show is about. But that's OK, this whole show is a hoot and it never fails to make me laugh. If I'm having a bad day, I watch a recording of one of the shows and it's all good again.

I think it goes slightly beyond orders on what to watch though.  Very often you can hear one Couch make a comment about or have a certain reaction to a show and then see a different Couch almost seem to respond to or mirror them.  I get the sense that it's the standard Reality defense here that they're never given words to say (although that doesn't mean they might not be scripting jokes for themselves), but that they are given a list of specific actions to perform, as well as specific topics to make sure they discuss.

It doesn't bother me that much.  Again, if you compare it to a mix of Mystery Science Theater and The Soup, just with a lot more people commenting, it's totally in line with what those shows do (although of course without an audience and with the pretense that these are "real people"--which of course is B.S. even if many of them WEREN'T in showbiz, because Bravo is in the business of turning everyone who appears on their air into pseudo-celebs, and these people are no exception).

I'm glad the hour length is not proving too onerous.  Still I find them spending more time on some shows than I care.  I feel like i am being forced to watch an episode of a show I preferred not to watch in its initial airing.  A half hour made them be pithier and tighter in the edits.  I feel like the producers/editors are trying to make me like their own fanboi/grrl shows no matter what sometimes.

I still wish the three daughters and their dad had gotten the heave.  The daughters are always way too loud, over react way too much, still do that "what is happening/going on' annoying need to just talk instead waiting two seconds and watching the on that is going. Also they seem way too over aware of the cameras.

I think it would be a hoot if for just one show (watched, not an entire episode of this show), one watcher from one group just randomly switched with another.  The haughty blonde older woman sitting with two of the gay buddies.  Mrs Zeno in bed with the bed family men.  Brandy with one of the sister duo sisters.

I liked the Euros of Hollywood being featured in the episode tonight. Otherwise, I didn't laugh nearly as much as the past 2 episodes. I wasn't interested in watching the majority of the shows in tonights episode. Maybe the viewers felt the same way?

Most of the settings look fake to me. I don't think any of them are in their real houses but I could be wrong.

"It's a compliment! You have thick brows."

If I had 99 years, I never would have guessed that the B/S/E previews of a triple gasp, widened eyes, and shocked lean back was caused by a clip of nine-year-old Sarah screaming, "Whip it like a man!" I also loved their code word, "I like pussy."

Lamont needs to blog how his cooking class went.

Bed Dad: "There's Donna."

Everyone: "It's OONA!!"

I'm not familiar with the housewives shows, but that guy seemed pretty f'ing chill for someone going to prison for 8 years.

That's because he's an arrogant asshole who thinks that stealing millions in checks from Delta Airlines employees is no big deal. And that he's entitled to drive a Mercedes and drop $8,000 a night at strip clubs. Don't get me started, LOL.

I didn't like the Euros being there, it threw off the mojo of the show, for me.

PeeWee the brown Chihuahua steals the show every time!

Some of my favorite one-liners:

Real Housewives of Atlanta, "You got caught cause you did it" "He went in looking good and came out all gray like Obama"

Pee Wee went crazy, didn't he?

The grannies were about to have a coronary watching the Walenda guy. As was bed mom, peeking though the airline neck pillow.

Shows how young the girls are when they think the Penguin is Danny DeVito. No, it's Burgess Meredith! :)

"He a damn Ninja" "They should have called him the damn Rat instead of the Penguin!"

Everyone was as amazed by the kids on MC Jr as I was. :) But Dad on the Bed, seriously... it's Oona, not Donna. Everyone was teary eyed.

Zeno dad "I fell so useless right now." And son feeling like he will never cook anything but pancakes and eggs.

"She got baby oil lotion on her feet mixed with toe jam".. LOL at the hidden camera thing.

I hated having the Euros in this episode and hope it's just a one time thing.  The only positive is at least now I know not to waste my time watching their show.  The guy on the right had hair that made my eyes bleed.

Euros got to GO, they're annoying and it's just to promote their show, which I won't watch.

I suggest we all drop an email to the network.

P.S.  Reactions on their Facebook page are much the same as ours.  Everyone seems to hate the Euros.

I'll add to the dislike/disgust of the Euros showing up.  I was a bit taken aback when they appeared.  I'm surprised BRAVO has used more restraint in doing such things.  I know they had that couple on and some of the Shahs of sunset cretins as well but both were after their shows cycles were done.  Maybe I am dooming us, but I am surprised the LA based shows haven't had more reality bottom dwellers Andy Cohen has so "wonderfully" helped introduce.  I type this knowing I possibly am invoking a curse of more Shahs, the walking venereal scars that populate Vanderpumps rules and of course the tawdry snotty mess that is Lisa Vanderpump herself that can't resist a camera even if it is off.

If they do subject us to such, at least have them spend more time watching and discussing the shows.  I felt like there was way too much time spent trying to seduce viewers into thinking these people were irresistible television fare.

I could've done without the Euros, too. But I did laugh when Fawni was excited to see Prince and broke the lighting fixture with her head.

It tickles me how the Zeno parents rag on their son. They seem really loving, though. I appreciate the affection. The older ladies continue to grow on me every week.

Julie was spot on with calling Apollo a sociopath. He just doesn't get it.

I loved how everyone had empathy for the kids on Master Chef Junior. I get sad for kids in competition shows like that. Their little faces crumble.

Favorite line for me: "Jada Pinkett-Smith is serving drag queen realness."

Fish Mooney and Oswald Cobblepot are the best part of Gotham for me.

I wish I had Netflix so that I can watch Transparent. It looks interesting.

An off night for me, and not just because of the Euros. I guess the couchers didn't like the shows, because the energy was low.

I had urged a conservative family member to watch the show, so of course last night we had porno dancers, pussy jokes and splayed legs. He hated it.

Family Bed Dad annoys me. He's very "on" and aware of the cameras. Tries too hard.
