I was looking at the reddit thread for the game and someone made a Taylor Swift song reference, and Drew replied with, ""Bad Blood"! I studied! I get that!" 😄 (Thus followed a string of TS song puns.)

Also, someone pointed this out: "I assume Ken was well aware the clue was coming during the interview, which had to be fun for him. In fact, doesn't he (or the producers) pick from several interview options? Might they have gone with that one knowing there was a TS clue on the board?"

(Fun fact: This week's games taped on election day, and the first game aired on certification day.)

But if a woman's nipples showed as much as his did, they'd have stopped production and told her to cover up. As a woman who does not even own a bra, I'm resentful that dudes get the freedom to poke through their shirts and we get the Scandal Branding if we do.

At least he's aware...?

(Someone on reddit said "just call him Jennifer Maniston." 😄)

Had to add one more: "I believe Drew is the human version of Hermie the elf from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer (claymation version) and I adore it."

Now I can't unsee that, but I have to go to bed.

I wondered when these were filmed when I heard the Nikki Giovanni clue. I thought there might be an on-screen acknowledgement of the date the episode was taped, as she passed away on December 9th.

Drew looked so familiar to me, I was certain he's an actor, not a journalist, and that I've seen him in... something.

Jeopardy, maybe? 😉

Drew is actually the first second chance person I’ve remembered. And I was rooting for him, because I also remember liking him. I think he had some crazy colored hair then? Pink maybe, or blue?

Discussions on how to spell “Tinder” seem to be trending on Google. Like Drew, I thought it was spelled Tindr, and apparently so do a lot of people. As ams1001 pointed out, that may be confusion with Grindr. There are also other apps that drop the “e”, like Flickr and Tumblr. But much to my surprise, Tumbler has always been Tumbler.

I enjoyed this entire post so much, I couldn’t quote just one part.

I noticed that and the show didn't mention that Maggie Smith had died.

Smith died at the end of September and this taped at the beginning of November, so she was already dead at the time.  Giovanni was still alive at the time of taping.

With what we refer to as the J! curse, meaning clues about people who died between tape and air date, do they typically do that?  I know they've put more than one "taped on X date" notice on screen for things like a Ukraine clue when Russia having invaded since the taping rendered the fact at hand in the clue disputed/no longer true, but can't recall a chyron simply indicating a clue subject had died in the interim.

I don't think they've ever added a chyron for someone who has died between taping and airing (which, as we've all observed, happens with some frequency). I think they only do "taped on..." notifications if subsequent events have rendered the clue obsolete, or might make it seem insensitive.

Edited to add: I also got FJ, although it wasn't by any means instant. And I also thought it was spelled Tindr. Luckily, I didn't have to write it down. Probably a good thing. My wife would kill me if she thought I knew too much about dating apps! 😀

Years ago, there was clue about Osama Bin Laden - with a picture.  Taped before 9/11/01, of course.  When it showed up in a morning rerun, yes, of course they added a chyron about it being taped prior to the attack.

January 7:

63% / 60% / 62%

In J I missed one in Coin Collection, Ruth or Blair, and Vowel-Consonant-Vowel, two in World Cities, and three in Hall of Famers and Scrambled Egg Layers.

In DJ I ran What Happened When, missed one in Showbiz and Brain "Rot", two in Potent Quotables, three in The Father Of, and totally failed Opera Settings.

I got DJ but I when I'm torn between Liechtenstein and Luxembourg (just trying to think of small European countries) I usually pick the wrong one so I was not confident.

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 3 + 1 DD) I got Darjeeling (DD), bluebird, and amontillado.

Zoe and Enzo were familiar after watching for a few minutes but I can't really say I remember any of these people.

Does anybody watch Master Minds, on GSN? Yesterday's episode (which my DVR said was a repeat, but I swear I'd never seen it before) featured a question about how Tinder was originally called Matchbox.

Not the first time I've noticed a Jeopardy! question showing up very soon afterwards on Master Minds. I'm not suggesting anything nefarious, but it's a strange coincidence.

January 8:

70% / 57% / 64%

I don't remember any of these people.

Okay first round, bad second. In J I ran No Vowel, missed one in Bones and Flying in State, two in Dec. 31, 1999 and Number, and three in Sports by Movie. In DJ I ran 5 Random Words from the Novel and Government Work, missed two in Edible & Musical Before & After, three in Good Enough, and four in Southern Hemisphere and Monk.

FJ was an instaget.

TSes: (J had 4 + the DD; DJ had 7) I got metacarpals, Panama Canal (DD), SFO, Tierra del Fuego, Office of Management and Budget, and satisfactory.

Sam B in the audience! "Can I say it, other Sam? Bring it!" 😄

Yes, Sam B. is on record (in the show’s podcast) as being pleased when contestants use his catchphrase. And now it’s on record in the show itself. I hope that will help reassure the occasional poster (here and elsewhere) who are bothered by it.

I was worried by the category for FJ, as history is not usually my strong suit, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was an instaget for me!

I saw “Alaska” and immediately thought Seward. Is there a Seward Act? Fortunately I was able to pivot to the correct response in time.

How do they choose which contestant gets the left podium when there is no current champion? For the Second Chance Tournament, do they go by how much money the contestants won on their previous appearances? Or is it a random selection? The people at the left podium appear to be doing especially well, so I wondered.

Random draw.

Inquiring minds want to know what he was doing in the audience. Did I miss something?

Seward, US Secretary of State, negotiated the purchase of Alaska. It was called Seward's Folly by those against it (note: this is close but not exact quote from my Google search. Since it was an AI quote, I didn't feel obligated and shortened it.)

I don't have any insider information, but he's still involved with the show in some capacity.  He's often on the official podcast.  So I wouldn't be surprised that he's there, especially for some of the "special" weeks.

January 9:

77% / 57% / 67%

Did pretty well in the first round...ran Movie Lines and "Dis" Is How You Say It, missed one in All Around the US and We Shall Endure, two in FOIA & Find Out and three in World History.

Not so well in DJ…missed one in Word History and Fabrics, two in Oceania and Classic TV, three in Literary Biography, and four in All in the Family.

FJ was an instaget. 🐒

TSes: (J had 3 + the DD; DJ had 7) I got Pike's Peak (DD), Ginsberg, Fiji water, and Family Ties.

I also got the TS of Pike's Peak, Ginsberg, Michael Landon, water, Wedgwood, and Family Ties.

I should have gotten Wedgwood, because just a few days ago I listened to an episode of the Cautionary Tales podcast that was about Josiah Wedgwood ("Darwin’s Grandpa and the Art of Sex Appeal").

MICHAEL LANDON! And not an off angle or weirdly shaded photo either. OMG, I was stunned. I’ve never felt so old. Michael Landon *was* TV.  😳

I was so mad; I just blanked on his last name!

I kept falling asleep while watching in bed on YouTube on my phone, so I mumbled “London,” but I knew he was Little Joe.

At least I finally got FJ this week, and it was an instaget.

And I kept saying Wedgwood louder and louder, but to no avail.

Oz debuted in 1997 and Sex and the City in 1998. Considering that we're now in 2025, any show that aired in a year starting with a 1 is at least 26 years old and falls into classic territory.

I can't believe it, either. 😄 Even the Michael Landon clue only referenced Little House and Highway to Heaven. I guess Bonanza was too old to be considered a classic. It's antique TV!

That's impossible, because the 1980s was only a few years ago, I swear!

To me, Michael Landon will always be the star of I Was a Teenage Werewolf!

Ha! Steve and Elyse could probably be the parents of the cast of that other classic show, Sex and the City

I don't know how old the characters were supposed to be, but Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross are both 77; Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis are 59 and Cynthia Nixon is 58. So they would have been young, but could reasonably be their parents. (I only really know Chris Noth from Law & Order, but he's 70?!)

Yes, thank you.  All the fires have missed my neighborhood, so I've just dealt with power outages and a lot of smoke, but I know people who've lost homes and it's a sad, stressful time here.  We've had non-stop news coverage on all the local stations, of course, so no J! and when I tried to check the archive I couldn't manage to concentrate on it.  But I'll be back in the conversation soon, I'm sure.  Thank you for checking on me, and I hope any other L.A. posters are okay as well.

Thanks for the update.  Keep safe.

I'll say it now: I don't like Enzo and hope he does not win.  Come on Drew/Sam.

Not a great game for me.  I only ran We Shall Endure and Movie Lines.  Got all but one in "DIS", Word History, Oceania and Fabrics.  Did get the missed answers of Pike's Peak, Pontchartrain, Julia Ward Howe, water (even though that was a joke guess for me), Michael Landon and Family Ties.

I got FJ, although I initially thought "did they send bats to space?".  Realized it was rhesus monkey and changed in plenty of time.

Who knew Fiji Water really comes from Fiji? 😲

I should've gotten archduke but something about the clue confused me.  And I might've gotten Wedgewood if I hadn't been thrown off by the picture being Jasperware.  Which was produced by Wedgewood but I thought they wanted the name of that specific pottery line.  Didn't help that I had no idea about Darwin being descended from Josiah Wedgewood.

They'd have raised less vapid, idiotic children than that.

Not by my definition of 'classic'.

So the math works if they had the kids young.

Yeah, but I didn't watch that and I actually watched Family Ties as a kid (it ran 1982-89; I was born in 1975). S&TC started the year after I graduated college (1998; though if I had to have guessed before looking it up, I would have thought it was later).

Same thing here about the Jasperware, didn't know if they wanted that or Wedgwood.  I don't usually suffer from 'burden of knowledge' but this time I did.

And I didn't know either that Darwin was descended from Josiah Wedgwood. Interesting!

January 10:

80% / 47% / 64%

Did pretty well in the first round again…ran President's Sibling and Plug, missed one in NY Colleges and "ULU", and two in Hitmakers and Play (giving myself credit for Megan Thee Stallion even though I was laughing too much at Ken's reading of Body-ody-ody... to actually say it out loud).

Did terribly in DJ…missed two in National Parks of the World, Geology, and Movies by Tagline, three in Begins with a Musical Instrument and Ships, and four in Tate Expectations.

FJ was not quite an instaget but I got it in plenty of time.

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 6) I got The Glass Menagerie (DD), Syracuse, fireplug, plug nickel, Rochester, and foxhounds.

I was rooting for Hermie, I mean Drew, so yay, but I would have been happy for any of them winning.
