They're definitely much more recent -- they were made in the late 19th-early 20th century, right up to the 1917 revolution.

Faberge eggs are valuable because they're one-of-a-kind, made of precious materials, and very finely crafted. I used to think that they must be just large-jewel-encrusted gaudy rocks but then I saw pictures of them and was blown away. 

My favourite may be Lilies of the Valley.

I was out last night, and only checked FJ when I got home -- instaguess I figured was correct.  I did the rest of the game this morning, but was a little pressed for time so only kept track of which of the 17 (good gods!) TS I got: deliver & reviled, Hans & Franz, damage, boron (lucky guess), fly by night of the living dead, Austria, Danube, Kurt Vonnegut, and the Marquis de Sade.

Another archive game for me since I'll be watching football tonight.

The Honorable being a TS surprised me (although I did correctly predict someone would guess Your Honor instead).  I'm also a bit surprised no one guessed travel; I'd never heard the quote, but it's damn true, so the fact "Abroad" was in the title had me confident my guess was correct.  And that none of the other two figured out they just needed to drop the sapiens from Greg's Homo sapiens response.

I missed three in movie munchies, but still had a good first round; I ran shade, salutations, and manners, and got everything but BurgerTime in time and all but Ben Jonson in king's men.

In DJ, I dreaded rap genres, and indeed missed three (two of which had pictures, but seeing them would not have helped*).  But other than that, I did very well; I ran quotes, OED, and government, got all but The Last Judgment in 10/31 (seeing the picture wouldn't have helped), and missed two in water.

FJ did not come to me instantly, but was my first guess after several seconds of visualization; I couldn't think of any other animal that would be described that way, so went with it.

*While I have no idea what T.I. looks like, I've heard about him -- because he and his wife have a slew of sexual assault allegations against them.  Maybe pick another rapper to ask about?

In DJ I missed one in US Government, two in October 31st, Hate-Ful Quotes, Rap Genres, and The OED Say H-I, and three in Bodies of Water.

Yikes. I remember a story about him going to the doctor with his then-18-year-old daughter each year to make sure she was still a virgin. Disturbing. I missed that clue, too, because I also don't know what he looks like, nor is he a name that would come to mind, anyway. The other one I missed was Shaboozey; I was thinking "that guy that was on one of the late night shows not super-long ago whose song I was pleasantly surprised at liking" (I don't usually even watch the musical performances, especially when it's someone I don't know) but could not come up with the name.

OMG, now that you mention it, I remember reading about that in the Celebrity News forum here, but just that someone had done it, not who it was.  Well, add that to the list of reasons he should not be the subject of some lighthearted clue -- pick another trap rap artist for a clue about that genre (a quick perusal of a "top trap rap artists" search result yielded easily half a dozen names I've heard of, so this would not be difficult).

That's the other one where seeing the picture wouldn't have helped me, as I'd never even heard of him let alone seen him.  My other miss was bounce; I didn't know of any of the rappers/genres, but correctly deduced Chicago and crunk from the clues.  Somehow bounce being what one does on a trampoline didn't come to me in time.

My newspaper carries a short feature "Today in History". When I read it, I often think - that would make a good J! clue. Sure enough, 2 of the October 31 clues were included today. They were Nevada becoming a state and Mount Rushmore being finished. Spooky! 👻

FJ did not come instantly, but thankfully it did come, because I think I would have been drummed out of Texas otherwise. I was initially thrown by the “rabbit-like” ears comparison— while elongated, an armadillo’s ears have never made me think “rabbit”.  But setting aside the ears and focusing on the shell got me there in time.

While I have only ever seen a few of them, armadillos have caused great havoc in lawns around my neighborhood. They like to burrow, and their holes can be quite wide. (And their tunnels deep and long.) They’re mainly nocturnal, which is why they’re not often seen. And that’s fine by me, because I think they look creepy. But at least they’re small. It’s assumed that modern-day armadillos descended from an animal that was as big as a rhinoceros. Imagine stepping outside early one morning and being confronted by a 6-foot, 600-lb one of these!

Missed Wednesday's game because I didn't allow enough time for baseball so I had to go to the archive.  Wouldn't have been a great night for me.  I didn't run any categories and there were only 4 where I got all but one clue: Historic Americans, 1980s Catchphrases, French Authors and Before & After.

I did get 7 stumpers: Hans und Franz, the Danube, the Marquis de Sade, boron (a total guess because it was the only element I could think of which started with 'b'), retrievers, Grenade and fly-by-Night of the Living Dead.  I'd call that impressive except that there were a shit ton of stumpers.  I did get FJ immediately, though.

Can't say I'm sorry John lost.  I didn't hate him or anything but I didn't much care for him either.

Last night's game wasn't great for me.  I did run Shade and Movie Title Munchies, and got all but 1 in Manners Maketh, Bodies of Water and Rap Genres but got a lot wrong in other categories. And I only came up with 2 stumpers: travel and bounce.  Might never have gotten the second one without the trampoline part of the clue but I remembered hearing something about Big Freedia and managed to put it together.  I can thank Tyra Banks' batshit crazy photo shout on a episode of Top Model for knowing crunk.

Fortunately armadillo was an instaget.

I wasn't particularly attached to any of the contestants so I didn't really care who won.  I did wonder if Joseph had a speech impediment or maybe had suffered from Bell's Palsy at some point, although he only sounded like that during the game, not during the interview, so maybe not.

It seems you suffered from a variation of the “burden of knowledge,”
whereas I, having never seen an armadillo IRL, pictured something like this, with rabbit-shaped ears, if not rabbit-sized:

Wednesday I'm not sure if I got FJ, in that Gutenberg Bibles was my first thought, but I was watching from the bed, dozing off during commercials, so I can't say that was my final answer.
But I did get the TS of Land of Nod. 😉 🛌

Wednesday I'm not sure if I got FJ, in that Gutenberg Bibles was my first thought,

I tried putting together the ears and the shell and got nothing, so I went with just the shell and came up with armadillo, thankfully!

I said the Gutenberg printing press, I'm not sure why I didn't think of the Bible, something about the category and clue made me think of a 'thing' and books just aren't 'things' for me? I was just happy that I was correct on the Gutenberg part.

In J I missed one in Cooking Verbs and Forest Lawn Cemetery, two in Murders in Buildings and Styling Hair, three in Logos, and four in 19th Century. In DJ I missed one in Reptiles, two in British Baby Names, Prime Numbers on TV, and Synonym Pairs, three in Classical Musicians, and four in On the Map.

Had to think for a bit (the volcano part of the clue threw me off and I was trying to think of a movie about that) but I got FJ. 

TSes: (J had 5; DJ had 3 + 1 DD) I got clarify, ducktail, Eleven (DD), and albino alligator.

I eventually got to FJ, in time to write it down.  Like @ams1001, I was briefly distracted by the volcano and thought of "Krakatoa: East of Java", but that movie was way later, and that event was way earlier.  Fortunately, I was able to redirect my thinking.

Checking the archive for TS, several of them were TS in my house, too:  ducktail, line-up, Heifetz, and friend & cohort.  On that last one, we'd been kicking ass in the synonym pairs category, but none of us could even come up with one of those words, let alone both.

I wrongly guessed Krakatoa for Friday's FJ, but, hey, I was a lot geographically closer than 2 of the players.
However, Krakatoa was panned, while How Green Was My Valley did win the Academy Award for 1941, so that sort of explains the 2 wrong guesses. I mean, with money at stake, they might as well write something and hope there was some trick in the clue and that they got it right after all. And court martials would have occurred near Wales.
I vaguely recall Mutiny on the Bounty being shown on a film projector in school in the 1960s, but I don't think I paid much attention. 

My Friday TSs were Ducktail, Clarify, and Dredge.

I cannot believe they gave credit for Boise, Idaho.  The hell?  The clue asked for the state capital, which is a city; it had to be a city made up of two five letter words, not a five-letter city plus its five-letter state.

The egg yolks TS surprised me; not that none of them knew that about French vanilla, but that none of them guessed it -- what else that's yellow and a "these" rather than a "this" would be added to vanilla ice cream?  I'm also surprised no one guessed excess for the Oscar Wilde quote, since it was a pretty sure bet the missing word was going to be the opposite of moderation.  I was mildly surprised winery was a TS; sinewy = wiry and the NE being in the middle was tricky, but what else would a business making pinot noir be but a winery?

I almost ran the entire first round, but missed giant squid, banana pudding, and the Habsburgs.

In DJ, I dreaded epics, as that is not my jam, and, indeed, I'd never seen any of them and the only one I knew via cultural osmosis was Shōgun.   I was terrible in odyssey, too, only correctly guessing James Cameron.  I ran the rest, so if I could have swapped those out for categories in my wheelhouse, I'd have kicked ass in that round, too.

It still would have all come to a halt with FJ, though.  I've never read the book, never watched the movie, never heard those names, and I missed what should have been the obvious significance of there being three of them.

In DJ I ran Health & Medicine, missed one in Don't Do the Math, two in World Flags and "NE" Add, three in Epics, and four in Odyssey.

TSes: (J had 4 + the DD; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got giant squid, excess, egg yolks, winery, and dengue fever. (I got the banana part but I guessed cream pie instead of pudding.)

Haven't even finished the intro and I want to tell Brian to calm the f*** down. He wasn't nearly as annoying as I was expecting him to be, but I wasn't exactly rooting for him, either. I did kinda like his pink bow tie, though.

I did get it, but I wasn't sure because my brain was thinking it was supposed to be added to the end (like the previous clue revealed in that category). But nothing else made sense, so...

Instaget FJ for me.  I've read the book, though it was ages ago, and I've seen the movie with Richard Chamberlain and Michael York (I recommend this one!).  I don't remember the servants from the movie, though.

I also got the TS of Niagara Falls, banana pudding, winery, War Horse, dengue fever, and The Tempest.  Although I do wonder if they'd give banana pudding to me if I pronounced the way we still do in my family -- nanner puddin'.

It does not hurt my feelings that Brian (with his drawing of a brain around his name) did not win.

I thought it was a talk balloon around his name. I was not rooting for him either. I may be an old grouch, but I'm not crazy about contestants who try too hard to be "fun."

I came down on the other side of that one. I thought it was an interpretation of the clue that the judges hadn’t anticipated, but could be justified.

Such an easy FJ. I’ve never read the book or seen any film version of The Three Musketeers, but a clue giving three French names and asking who they are servants of in a Literature category? Had it correct before Ken had even spoken 5 words.

I rarely ever root against a player (who isn’t Yogesh) but damn if I wasn’t clapping every time Brian missed those Daily Doubles. (Black Beauty as a WW1 story!? 😂😂)

He was trying way too hard to be a Quirky Character and just came across forced and fake. So annoying. Very happy he did not even stand a chance at wining.

The Three Musketeers is a *fantastic* read. It moves quickly and has a ton of great character writing. Highly recommend it.

Same here. He annoyed me all the way through, though. At one point I yelled at him, “stop PERFORMING and start PLAYING!” If he had spent less time auditioning for (whatever), I think he would have done much better.

I thought that was fair. “Boise, Idaho” is a capital. Obviously they were looking for just the city name, but the clue did not specify that, so giving the full place name fit the clue as presented.

”Banana Pudding” made me miss Souper Salad. I don’t know if it existed outside my region, but it was a buffet-style restaurant that consisted of a giant salad bar (and a couple of soup options). At the end of the salad bar were a few desserts, one of which was always banana pudding with vanilla wafers. Probably from a can, and nothing special, really, but it was childhood nostalgia-style delicious. They went out of business during Covid, like all the other self-serve restaurants with only a sneeze guard standing between you and crippling disease, and I haven’t had banana pudding since. Probably for the best, but still.

That’s what confirmed it for me. I’ve never read the book (and wouldn’t have expected them to have personal manservants), but the fact that there were three of them led me to think Musketeers. And then Ken’s full-on French pronunciation removed all doubt.
