I got to phalanges because of the show Bones, where she wiggles her fingers in front of her child and says phalanges.

Phalanges always make me think of Phoebe Buffay.

I just realized this entire week will be archive games for me -- Monday I was watching football, Thursday I will be again, and last night, tonight, and Friday I'll be out.  That's more socializing than I'd normally do in a month, so I may have to sleep all weekend.  Anyway, onto today's game:

LOL at Ken saying he's not going to kink shame (which the archive has as "king shame") about the cow TS.

The Moses TS surprised me, as did pitch black (I've never heard of the film, but got it instantly from the rest of the clue).

Were all the contestants too young to remember Pam Dawber?

I blew the kids books category entirely, but if not for that disaster I'd have had a great first round; I ran names and environment and got all but one each in the rest.

I only ran words in DJ, but got all but William Jennings Bryan in elections, all but Black Panther in filmanthropy, and all but portmanteau in "eau".  I missed three in scrolls, and two in animals.  Of all those misses, only two were correctly answered by a contestant; everything else was either a TS or missed DD.

I got FJ.  My mind immediately went to Russia, so I pulled up my mental map (which is pretty good) and its border with Kazakhstan seemed like it could be nearly 5000 miles, so I put a pin in that and scanned my map for other possibilities.  I came up with Ben's guess of Argentina and Chile, but felt confident Russia/Kazakhstan was longer, so stuck with it.

September 11:

73% / 53% / 62%

Again, decent first round, terrible second (but at least I got over 50% this time). In J I missed one each in Holy Something, Books for Kids, Names in the Dictionary, and The Environment, and two in Geography and TV Reruns. In DJ I missed one in Colorful Words, two in Filmanthropy, Amazing Animals, and Dead Sea Scrolls, three in Presidential Election Losers, and four in Ends in Eau.

I got half of FJ (Russia); does that mean I get half an asterisk?

TSes: (J had 7, including all but one of the bottom row, + the DD; DJ had 9 + both DDs) I got Cook Strait (total last-second guess; not even sure I knew such a strait existed), Yertle the Turtle, Moses, pitch black, iridescent, and alabaster.

Obligatory:

I guessed FJ right.

I got the missed clues of Cook Strait,, Pam Dawber, Moses, portmanteau, William Jennings Bryan, pitch black, sepia and alabaster.

I got the entire category of names right.

And again, I only got half of FJ, and I was so confident!  Oh well.

I did get the TS of Cook Strait, Yertle the Turtle, honey badger, Black Panther, pitch black, and alabaster.

I have a messed up arm this week (can't raise it) so I was identifying with the returning champ's buzzer stance, but he was moving his arms around during the interview, so I guess his reasons are not the same as mine.

I had alabaster, iridescent, and sepia for TS today. I didn't get much else, though.

"So say we all"?
I was pretty sure Russia and China were too easy, but I would never have come up with Kazakhstan.

I not only knew Pitch Black from the clue, but I've seen the movie on TV a couple of times. It's a Space flick.

I have no idea why I knew portmanteau. Maybe a George Eliot or a Tolstoy or Louisa May Alcott novel? Or some old black and white movie or series?

I used sepia today to solve Wordle.

I was cooking dinner during yesterday's show, so it was an audible-only event. Today, I was able to engage my eyes, but that didn't help because I kept getting distracted by asking myself "WHAT IS HE DOING WITH HIS HANDS!?"

So bizarre. Possible reasons:

  • He was having a seizure, resulting in muscle stiffness (of the phalanges!).
  • He just got released from a straitjacket and/or handcuffs.
  • He was frozen by a supervillain and despite a heroic escape, hasn't yet completely thawed.
  • He is practicing his Wonder Woman bracelet powers.

Of all the strange buzzer postures we have seen, this may be the strangest. But I couldn't root for the opponent to his immediate left, either, because the spasmodic hip swaying was just as distracting.

As for FJ: Of course I didn't get it, because Geography. My first thought was Chile (and something) because I know Chile is very long. My second thought was Russia, but again I couldn't come up with a second country. So... Chile and Russia? Sounds perfectly acceptable to me.

I'm plenty old, and I didn't think of her. As I mentioned in last season's thread, shortly before the break, I don't really pay attention to the personal lives of celebrities. The clue was essentially "Who is Mark Harmon married to?", and I had no idea. See my previous comments on the shocking secret identity of Jamie Lee Curtis's husband. 😀

I did get Final Jeopardy, thanks to repeated playing of JetPunk's "Countries of the World" quiz. Kazakhstan is BIG. China's bigger, but its border with Russia is curtailed because Mongolia is in the way.

I got no problem with the way Will holds his signaling device. Contestants do what works for them.

Plenty old here too, but I did know he was married to her, I could picture her, knew she was on Mork & Mindy, knew about her costar Schaeffer being killed by a stalker, even knew her name began with a D! but her name (which I knew) just would not manifest enough for me to say it.

I got Cook by just wildly guessing since he was around there so much. I said bull instead of cow, do you think that would've counted? Got Temple and Pitch Black, Sepia and Honey Badger, portmanteau and alabaster. I got to Iris but not to iridescent. Did not get FJ

Maybe he just needs to stabilize the arm he's supporting.

It also depends on other factors as well. We have AT&T and have lost a couple of channels but not ABC as that comes via Tegna who had a dispute last year with Disney & we lost the local ABC for months but they sorted themselves out.

Disney want more money from the providers like AT&T/Comcast etc. but they're obviously against giving them more $s as people cut the cord & go to streaming and their revenue dwindles.

It's very hit & miss on who gets affected by these things but as usual the viewers lose out causing more to go to streaming. It's the classic race to the bottom & the providers are circling the drain.

Directv still airs my local ABC station, and they've been running everything the network runs, so I haven't missed anything yet.  Now, ESPN is a very different matter.

So far I haven't had great luck with this season.  It's been hit or miss for me.  And while I did get Monday's FJ, I missed Tueday's and last night's.

I liked cute Navy guy, so of course he lost.  The current champ is fine, although his arm/hand position seems sort of oddly aggressive to me.

The Chaucer TS also surprised me (and I was pretty bad in that category).

If I could lose that name down one of the holes in my brain after years of reading various parts of the Canterbury Tales for almost every medieval literature course I took at college, I think anyone can.  I was sitting on the couch going "Oh shit, I know this, it starts with a C!!!!" but couldn't come up with it.

I got it because of Phoebe using the name "Regina Phalange" on Friends.  Must've looked it up the first time she did that.

I got Pam Dawber, portmanteau, pitch black, sepia, alabaster, iridescent and Moses, the last one primarily because I saw the Dudley Moore film "Holy Moses!" in the theater.  It was actually quite funny.  I also got honey badger; I find those critters to be amusing.

I thought of Russia and China but didn't think their shared border was long enough so I went with Chile and Argentina instead.  Completely forgot about Kazakhstan but I probably wouldn't have said it because I didn't realize it was big enough to have that much border with Russia.

I mostly know it from its other meaning of blending two words together to form a new one (as in Bennifer or Brangelina, or something less celebrity-centric like motel or brunch) but I must've read it in its original context somewhere because it was the first word to come to mind for that clue.  I threw it out as a wild-ass guess and was surprised that it was correct.

I remember when Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber got married, probably because I had a crush on him at the time.  I've the NCIS episodes with her; she was very good in the role, and she's aged quite well, too.

Yeah, I have ESPN+ as part of our Hulu/Disney+ bundle because I watched football (soccer) that was only available on ESPN+ but that has now moved to Paramount+. What I didn't realize until I wanted to watch something on ESPN was that those channels are blocked on our AT&T. So being the genius that I'm not I thought "it's okay we have ESPN+ so I'll be able to watch ESPN on there but, so I found out, ESPN1 & 2 are still not available to me even though I have ESPN+.

So apparently I still need to have my AT&T feed to watch ESPN1/2 even on the app even though I have ESPN+ therefore ESPN can go fuck themselves & I'll be getting rid of ESPN+ at the end of the month and when/if ESPN comes back on AT&T I won't be getting ESPN+ back.

I put the whole AT&T/Disney dispute firmly at the door of Disney because they are obviously greedy MFs who want it from all sides & fuck the customer.

Pity I can't get rid of Disney+ as well but I'm not dealing with a thoroughly pissed off 2.5 year old granddaughter which is the only reason we have it.

I occasionally watch Johnny Carson on antennatv. One night he had on Mark Harmon, who was complaining that the media seemed to think his private life was their business. He preferred to keep his family, wife Pam Dawber and young son Sean, out of the media. I knew Mark was married to Pam. I was amused that both would later appear on NCIS.

I'll be watching football, so checked the archive.

The bond TS surprised me a bit.

I thought I was going to bomb animated films, as they are not my jam, but I'd managed to hear of all of them except Wreck-It, Ralph (I knew it had to be something Ralph, obviously, but that's as far as I got).  I hate war history, so also expected to bomb clashes, but only missed two.  I missed another two each in bears and London, so not my best first round, but better than I expected.  I only ran idioms, but I got close in self-help books, getting all but Jordan Peterson (never heard of him, and anyone worried masculinity is "endangered" is someone I'm happy not to know).

My expected to bomb that but did pretty well luck did not carry over into DJ, though -- I indeed blew the bible category entirely.  And cultural osmosis did not come through for me in the TV category; I technically missed all of them, but had I been able to see the pictures I'd have recognized George Lopez and probably the Crypt Keeper (although that one I may not have been able to pull out of my brain in time).  It was just not my round; I got all but kelpie in K and all but Lavoisier in chemistry, but didn't run anything and missed two each in mountains and jobs.

I topped it all off by having no idea for FJ.

Meh game tonight…in J I missed one in Self-Help Books, Bears, and Animated Films, two in London, and three in Sporty Idioms and The Clash. In DJ I missed one in Chemistry and Job-Pourri, two in Biblical Fathers & Sons and Starts with K, three in TV Characters, and four in Mountains.

Not an instaget but I got FJ in plenty of time.

TSes: (J had 8; DJ had 6 + both DDs) I got Eros, kanji, periodic (DD), and bond.

I like the new champ and his mustache.

Wikipedia says yes: Prior to the machine's invention, pinsetters were boys or young men (pin boys) hired at bowling alleys to manually reset pins and returned balls to the player.

My cable cut out again. They came to the house earlier this week because one day I had 483 outages! It would go on and off on a whim, and it was impossible to look up anything or write. 😡

I didn’t get FJ. Perhaps due to my anger at my cable/wifi issues. I just hope I can get tonights as nothing for this week is a poor start.

Wow, that's terrible! I can't imagine having outages that frequently (though we do have a few each day - it's not because of cable and don't last longer than a few minutes). We have a new brand in town that installed fiber optic cables all around town, but the hubby isn't interested (to be fair, it's pricier, of course)

I got FJ.  Mostly because I don't know any other British drummers.

I got the missed clues of orange and knight.

Not a bad game, not a great game.

Couldn't watch because I went to play trivia last night.  We came in 2 out of 2.  And neither team had a particularly impressive score.

In J I ran Aquatic Animals, missed one in Stately Preceders and The Arts, two in Food & Wine, three in "S" to "S", and four in NY's Hottest Club.

In DJ I missed one in In the Medicine Cabinet (and I'm sure it was a total coincidence that the first commercial after the round was for Wegovy, right?), two in 21st Century Film, Only One Vowel, and History, three in For You Page, and four in Countries' Northernmost Points. (Is it just me or was there a lot of geography this week?)

I got FJ! I didn't really know but I figured a Beatle was a reasonable guess.

On Thursday, I noticed that Will looks like Jeff Goldblum.

I knew the TS of solvent and I am convinced all the contestants also knew it but somehow all had a simultaneous inexplicable memory laspe.

On Friday, I enjoyed Hilarys sense of humor. I would like to have a drink with her.
