What am I missing about the bars? 👀

I posted about Kaylia Nemour a few posts up. The French gymnastics federation has not been kind to her. Competing for Algeria, she had a beautiful bars routine today and not only is she a contender for gold in the event, she could also be a contender for an individual AA medal and may have put France in contention for a team medal (though the way France is performing now, nothing short of five Simone Bileses would be helpful for them).

Thanks for explaining. I'm kind of distracted by some other stuff going on and am trying to use this as a distraction to keep me out of trouble.

It sucks when someone is singled out like that. Especially when it comes to young women who are already being judged enough.

Very concerned about Jade being sick and it potentially spreading to the other ladies. I read somewhere that she and Simone are roommates. Not sure if that is true, but a big potential yikes

They are.

I mean, I think you just have to trust that there are doctors there and they are receiving the best medical advice they can. Stuff happens.

It was amusing when Jon was like “it’s so hard to win a medal at the Olympics, I can attest because I never did it” and Lauri was totally silent like “mmmm can’t relate”.

I don’t know how hard- core gymnastics watchers feel about Lauri, but I am loving her.  She cannot help herself explaining the technical stuff that might not make sense to the layperson, but I love it.

I like Laurie a lot too. She explains some stuff really well. She’s not perfect but she’s better than a lot of other commentators.

Did I actually hear Jon say something about how France’s meet has been something like the decapitated Marie Antoinettes from the Opening?

Yeah, France has been a total disaster so far. They may not even make the final.

i would be laughing a lot

did France have a nuclear meltdown on bars or something?

Yeah, nuclear meltdown is putting it kindly, and not just on bars. Also I’m fairly certain NBC had a storyline planned for this event, with France doing well in front of their home crowd, happy fans, all of it. So they had this heavy heavy focus on France during their subdivision and it turned into something like torture porn. Every apparatus was a total disaster. France did not make a single final, not team, not all-around, not event.

I really like Laurie too.  A natural commentator she is not, but what she lacks in that she makes up in sweetness and sensitivity to all the athletes.  She makes me smile listening to her.

Well, completely overslept subdivisions 3 & 4 - was gonna do a speedrun this afternoon to catch up, but I guess NBC has the replays locked for some reason. Reading Spencer's liveblog will have to do.

Caught the back half of subdivision 5 and Brazil looks great! So sad Flavia didn't make any finals, but I love that Andrade is bringing it! I was really rooting for Australia to grab that last team spot, but something happened with Emma Nedov's beam (didn't get to see it on the stream), so they ended in 10th. Congrats to Romania for making a team final for the first time in forever!

So sad that MDJDS did not have a good day - she's so good and it would have been awesome to have her perform her best in front of the home crowd. Her quotes after the fact are heartbreaking.

I'm a little frustrated that A) Jade is apparently sick and no one is isolating her and/or masking her and/or doing anything to mitigate the spread of illness among the US squad and B) that if she IS sick that they put her out there when she clearly couldn't handle doing the routines because she is SICK. That's some Martha-era shit and I don't like it. Hopefully whatever she has isn't contagious and/or clears up quickly because the Brazilian team just put the US on notice that they are ready to take team gold!

Sending healing vibes to Simone's calf - I actually thought she was just being a little weirdo after that vault timer in warm up when she crawled back and then hopped back to the end of the runway since she was super chill the rest of the meet - but glad it's nothing too serious. I've always thought it's been miraculous that she's never had a major injury (not jinxing it now!!!) and glad she seems to be holding strong.

I wouldn't go that far. Jade's coach is her dad. I'm sure if she was truly very ill he wouldn't have put her out there. She obviously wanted to qualify for EF's and she will do that on vault where she has an excellent chance at a medal.

I do think it might be wise to pull her from TF's if she's under the weather and give her more time to rest.

Like being on a boat on a river in pouring rain.  I would not be surprised if many of the athletes become sick.

The large number of people crowded together in a confined space is a much bigger concern than the rain.

Either way the gymnasts weren’t at the opening ceremony because they and the team supporting prioritized their health.

Suni, in particular, has to be closely monitored so if there was any concern that Jade was contagious she probably would have been wearing a mask.

I’ve been following a lot of the Olympic media and it is clear that the women’s team are being deliberate in their approach to this Olympics. They aren’t taking pictures with other athletes or giving interviews. Jade is the only member of the team who spoke to the media after qualifying and, apparently, you can see her letting Simone know that was her plan before hand.

What you need to know about the female gymnasts, according to NBC:

Simone - GOAT. Tokyo twisties. She's doing this for FUN this time!

Jade - her dad is her coach!

Jordan - Beyonce-inspired leos! She was named after Michael Jordan!

Suni - reigning AA Olympic gold medalist. KIDNEY PROBLEMS.

Hezly - she's young young young. Not even old enough to drive!!!

The Chinese gymnasts - they're good on beam and bars but we can't pronounce their names for shit so let's just move on ...

Anyone else from any other country: can they beat Simone??? Probably not and this is why.

But first, let's watch Simone taping her ankles ...

I don’t think they generally attend because their events are right away…

I watched a beach volleyball match that happened on Saturday afternoon Paris time, and the two U.S. women said they'd gone to the opening ceremony the night before.  In the rain.

If people are getting sick, it's because the ramp-up to the Olympics is usually so stressful and intense. Apparently there's nothing as crazy as trying to prepare for Olympic trials. You get to the Olympics and your immune system is shot from all the stress and adrenaline. Plus you're in a new land with unfamiliar food and germs.

I absolutely love this. NBC likes to promote rivalries between countries but gymnasts are a tight-knit group and I love seeing gymnasts from different countries cheer each other on.

One of my favorite moments from the 2016 quad was when Aliyah Mustafina posted a picture of her and Simone on the podium laughing and she said something about how they always want to make them out to be rivals but they have a lot of respect for each other and fun together, and in my mind that was a direct shot at NBC who always tried to make her out to be a cold hearted bitch.

"Aliya is a diva" was one of the weirdest long-standing NBC narratives. Through two quads, Aliya would literally be existing at a competition and the commentators would be like "Look at Aliya Mustafina, disrespectfully taping her ankles and chalking her hands. What an ice queen diva."

The whole French team imploding?  Did not see that - esp Melanie.  She must've been under so much pressure.

Poor Jade.  She so wanted to defend that Gold, but I was glad to see her nail the vault aft last Olympics.

That French/Algerian girl on the bars had gorgeous routine.

And was it me? but Rebecca Andrade didn't look as relaxed and cheery as she usually does.

It's like the overlords at NBC knew they had to air that Brody Malone "I'm just a good ol' country boy" tearjerker right before high bar because they knew there wouldn't be another chance after he imploded and missed all of the individual events.  As someone who is very much not a fan of Malone, I'm not devastated.

That stupid "aw shucks" fluff. I will never root for anyone falling but I don't GAF about him.

Great bars from Hezley too! Hope she's able to shake off that beam routine because she can definitely do more.

Yes, I was very pleased to see that solid bars routine. I'm a little worried though--as I texted to my friend--I'm pretty sure both her scores were dropped and I don't want her to be McCooled for the final. (I explained to him what that meant.) Hezly is the future and she needs experience.

Kaylia Nemour with an incredible bars routine, she’s the favorite to win gold in this event, which would be Algeria’s first ever gymnastics medal.

It’s super schadenfreude-esque for France. Nemour (born and raised in France) was cleared for competition after knee surgery by her doctor, but the French team doctors wouldn’t clear her. They were also trying to force her to train at their national center and she wanted to stay in her own gym. Well, when the doctors wouldn’t clear her she was in danger of missing international competitions that would in turn make her ineligible for the Olympics. So she decided to switch nationalities to Algeria (where her father is from). France slow-played her nationality switch until just before a big African competition that she needed to take part in. She was able to take part in that event, she qualified for worlds and then Olympics this year.

France would have had a chance at a team medal with Nemour, too.

OOPS.

Her bars are simply gorgeous.

Is Nina Daerwal at these Games? Did she qualify? I only watched Subdivisions 1 and 2.

When Bars is done right, it’s probably the most beautiful apparatus. Nemour does it right.

Not just beautiful but so exciting! All those connected skills and laid out Tkatchevs and cross grips! So rooting for her!

I saw Nina on beam, so she is at the games, not sure if she qualified though.

Just looked - seems that Nina did qualify for uneven bars, but I believe that is it.

Reading around and it seems Marine Boyer took a bad fall at the training facility right before the competition, like a possible concussion level fall. That put the French gymnasts in a bad spot, as apparently they all saw it happen. After the competition, she was taken to be checked out and skipped interviews.

Oh God, that's horrible.

We have a new Oksana Chusovitina!  Becky Downie of Great Britain, at 32 years old, returns to the Olympics sixteen years after she debuted in the 2008 Beijing Games.  She was passed over in the 2020 Tokyo Games but now she is back.  Always nice to see older athletes hanging in there!

I'm watching the Sub 1 replay and that was a great bars routine.  Checked online and she qualified for the event final.

Love seeing the Romanians again, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea had some lovely routines.

Also nice to see the Bulgarian Vaulter Valentina Georgieva make the final.

Regarding the two per country, yes someone always gets screwed by it and this year it was Jordan.  It is what it is.  Personally I think they should amend the All Around qualification rules where if you finish in the top 8, you're in regardless of if you're country person #3 but I'm not the rule maker.  I know there used to be three qualifiers back in 2000 maybe 2004 but I don't know if they changed it to prevent podium sweeps.

I think they changed the per country maximum after the 2000 games when Romania took the top three spots*.   If they left it unrestricted, then there could have feasibly been four or five USA gymnasts in the AA in recent years, but pre-1996, might have resulted in four or five Soviet gymnasts in most years - which was probably why the original limit was in place.
it’s always going to be a shame for #3, but they know the stakes going in.

* yes, I know the gold medalist was later disqualified, but they still earned the top 3.

Were there other countries competing?🤔

I'm glad I watched the coverage of the last two subdivisions during the day.  Otherwise I might never have known anyone else was there.  It's a shame the prime time coverage pretty much only showed the US men, because there were some wild performances from other teams.

At least with the women's competition, they did show a few other competitors in prime time.

Wow, France completely collapsed!  Maybe the pressure of being in their home country got to them.

Brazil was great.  I'd really like to see them medal.

Isn't NBC going to show gymnasts from any other countries? And I don't mean just when the members of the other teams fall. I'm sure Simone will win the all around unless something unexpected happens but this still the Olympics. Not the Simone and team USA show.

I really miss the old format where we saw all the teams on the floor at once and they went back and forth between teams and apparatus. Now it's all USA all the damn time.

It really is frustrating. like with CBC they do focus on the Canadians  - but they do put a lot of other focus on the other people even if they have no chance at doing anything (at least during the actual live event) if Drama happened. they'll focus on that during the primetime. but if you watch NBC (which sometimes i DO (well did i no longer have cable) - because they had the best fluff pieces), you'd think it was just Host Country + USA + whoever happened to win/had drama.  (so basically when LA Hosts, it's just gonna be USA LOL)
