They have a history of that (ignoring that first name and last name are in opposite order in many Asian countries [and some Balkan ones as well]), don't they?  I seem to recall it has happened before, but I can't recall specific examples, so I may be wrong.

Along those lines, because I'm old and remember the historic meeting, I got it right away, but I initially wrote down Mao Tse-Tung on my FJ scoresheet,  because that's how it was (incorrectly) spelled in the West at that time. Before 30 seconds ran out, I recognized my error and changed it to Zedong and I have to wonder if the archaic spelling would have been accepted. 

If Chairman Mao is acceptable, your alternate spelling of Zedong is also acceptable.  😉

Well, the rules for FJ have always been that as long as it's phonetically correct, they'll accept it.

Well, phonetically the Zh is sort of a soft J sound, kind of like how the J is pronounced in "Jean-Luc Picard".

Also, phonetically for Chinese transliteration to English letters is always going to be a bit dicey.

Some of the phonetic pronunciation stuff seems to get extra murky when you get into places where the spelling changed, like Bombay/Mumbai  and Peking/Beijing.

My musician husband worked up a version using fifty instead of 16, in honor of me, after I turned 50. He'd play it at music gatherings.  I was not fond of it (never got over turning 50), and the others just heard it as the original lyric.

And here's another creepy one, that sort of acknowledges it's creepiness. Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, this is the Bobby Vee version.

I said Mao because Nixon going to China was such a huge event at the time and it's pretty fixed in my memory.  Personally I would not have accepted "Zedong" because that would be like accepting "Alexander" instead of "Hamilton".  I'm not going to get too worked up about it because it didn't affect the outcome of the game but still, it annoyed me.

Chairman Mao is far more acceptable than just Zhedong, imo.

Not a bad game tonight. In J I ran Bunny Lit, missed one in Drugs, Duets with Dads, and Find "Out", and two in Capitals & their Airports (I had Saudi Arabia but couldn't think of the capital) and Well That Happened. In DJ I missed one in Senate History, Animal Kingdom, and Emotions, and two in Monuments, Gold, and They Directed Themselves.

FJ was an instaget.

TSes: (J had 3 + the DD; DJ had 7) I got calcium, anxiety, and cloture.

I got the  missed clues of Riyadh, calcium, anxiety, Italy and mule.

I got the entire categories of bunny lit and emotions right.

Archive game for me as the show is preempted here.

I came so close to running the entire first round, but I joined the contestants in being stumped by sulfa in drugs and I didn't come up with Bunnicula in bunny.

DJ was a great round for me, too; I missed three in directors, but I ran Senate and emotions and got all but one each in the rest.

FJ took several beats to come to me, but it did in plenty of time, so my J! week is off to a great start.

I was sure they were all going to know FJ and it would all depend on the wagers.

If Josh hadn’t blown his “true daily double” — like if he’d wagered more conservatively — he might have won even not knowing Lolita, depending upon the wagers.
But Adriana made a big wager, implying she was confident with the category of NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEWS, so he would have lost anyway.

That category could go either way for me, but I happened to know it.
I wonder if post-Me Too, women are more familiar than men with the 1950s review of Lolita being “… repulsive, disgusting & "highbrow pornography”?

My TS instagets:

  • sulfa drugs was an instaget for me because I’m old. 
  • calcium because I took Tums in pregnancy 35-45 years ago.
  • anxiety because it was one of the illustrations I did for a book about “feelings.”

I was at least familiar with all of the bunny lit — if not quick as a bunny with my responses.
Others could include: “The Runaway Bunny,” “Goodnight Moon,” and “The Country Bunny and the Gold Shoes.”

And if he hadn't blown it there, he might have had the confidence to bet more on his second DD, allowing him to take the lead over Adriana. Not that it would have mattered, ultimately. He did make a smart FJ wager, and likely gave Adriana a few moments of anxiety before her answer was confirmed.

Speaking of anxiety, I would very much like to see Shapeshifter's illustration. 

I take a sulfa drug, although I have neither acne nor an eye infection. (But I guess I don't have to worry about getting either?) That clue surprised me.

FJ was an instaguess for me, based on the year.

I don't know what comes over some of the contestants who have $3,000+ to say "make it a true daily double" risking everything for the possibility of giving a wrong answer, falling to zero, and very possibly not being able to hang around for final jeopardy.  Also when they are playing against a contestant who has proven they have good buzzer and brain skills, it's probably not a good idea to to think you will be able to claw your way back to the top.  Oh well, I'm not a good gambler as I have stated before.  

On a shallow note, I loved Josh's tie.  The colors and pattern were beautiful.

The only thing I could think of for FJ was Peyton Place🤔, not a 'classic' but all I could think of.

Way before "metoo", I thought Lolita was repulsive when I had to read it in college. I understood that we weren't supposed to like Humbert, but I draw a firm line when it comes to children.

Though I'm old too, I got sulfa because my youngest was allergic to the 'cillins, so we had to use sulfa drugs for her.

Calcium because I only recently read something about Tums as a supplement option.

I'm old enough to remember sulfa drugs being mentioned on tv hospital shows at least.  And being asked if I was allergic to them.

I knew calcium because I have heartburn frequently enough to take a lot of Tums.

I called Watership Down when the Bunny Lit category was revealed.

I did get FJ, but it was not an instaget.  

And I got the TS of Riyadh, calcium, sulfa drugs, mule deer, Greenwich Village, and Honda.

Monday's FJ clue: TheJeopardyFan said "I’m also not entirely sure why the show thought it necessary to include 'now considered a classic' in the clue" and I agree. I haven't read "Lolita"  but the last I heard, it was still repulsive porn.

In J I missed two in From the Ad, New to the OED, and Opera, three in Off We "Go" and AKA, and four in Cleanup Men (thank you Babe Ruth). In DJ I ran Historic Descendants, missed one in "K-A", two in Authors and Ceramics, and three in Observatories and Title is an Adjective.

FJ was an instaguess again.

TSes: (J had 6 + the DD; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got Brunhild (DD), Joseph Heller (DD), and near-Earth objects.

Sarah is (originally) from the next town over from me, but I like Adriana too much to want to see her lose, so I couldn't root for her. I liked the guy, too.

I finally got an FJ right. Whoo-Hoo!

I got the missed clues of Golden, Brunhilde, Invincible (used to love that song, not saying I now hate it I just haven't heard it in eons), Joseph Heller, and Karakoram.

Instaget FJ for me tonight.  

I also got the TS of bowling, Brunhilde, broken heart (after heartbroken was ruled incorrect), bisque, Very Large Array, and near-earth objects.

And now I have Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny in my head -- "Oh, Bwunhilde, you're so wovewy!"  "Yes I know it, I can't help it!"

For FJ, the only two-word states that came to mind were the Dakotas and basically everything on the east coast.  So I mentally wrote down South Carolina and tried to think of why it wouldn’t be something that obvious. Fortunately NM wormed its way into my mind in time to change my response. Afterwards, looking at a map, SC and NM are so close that I’m surprised nobody went with the wrong one.

I got it mostly because it was the only female name I can associate with a Wagner opera. And it may well have come from subconscious memories of Bugs Bunny.

I spent too much time on the east coast with FJ. Mainly because the clue said the state "stretches" south, which made me think elongated, and most western states are boxy.  But after wiggling my brain around the eastern US, I only had semi-boxy South Carolina, and I didn't think that would be the answer because "south" was in the clue. It had to be something less obvious. So I finally turned my brain west and... Time's up!

OF COURSE it was New Mexico. And I live next door to it, so I have no excuse. I overthought that clue.

FJ was waaaaay too easy.

I fully expected to run the Dreaded Opera Category and I did.  None of the questions were even the least bit difficult for me.  Of course, I love opera and that's probably my favorite category.  I was happy that Ken pronounced Turandot correctly rather than dropping the final "t" as I've heard people do.  It's Italian, not French, so that t is pronounced.

When I saw the Barber of Seville, it was really, really difficult to not start laughing during the overture.  Because of course I was picturing Bug Bunny running a lawn mower over Elmer Fudd's face.

I watched at my parents' house so didn't keep track, but I know I missed more than I typically do (probably because we watched it after dinner, when my brain is already done for the night).  But I wasn't terrible in anything other than the dreaded opera category (I correctly guessed Cinderella, but that was it).  FJ was an instaget, and I probably got about 50% of the TS.

Had a pretty good J! round...Ran Nature and You'll Need Some Protection, missed one in Disney Princesses, and two in Mathew Brady, Regional Food, and "D" Facto.

Had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad DJ round…ran nothing, missed two in Rivers of Europe, Don't Want to Fight, and Gemstones, three in Shakespeare Quotes, and four in Numerically Named Bands and Vowel Switcheroo.

Did not get FJ…there goes my perfect week.

TSes: (J had 2 +  the DD (I got 'em all!); DJ had 3 (and they were all in the Vowel Switch category)) I got totality (DD), exit sign, and almonds.

Connor gave me a good laugh with his story and only wanting to get on J! to apologize to Eminem.

FJ was an instaguess based solely on the word spoke.

I got the missed clues of path of totality, exit, panel/penal, caller/cellar and rope/repo.  

I got the entire categories of protection and rivers right and the entire categories of food and bands wrong.

Archive game for me as the show is preempted here.

I expected to blow the Disney category, but "only" missed three.  I might very well have missed another three in Brady even if I'd been able to see the photos; I didn't need one in order to get Barton and I know I'd have recognized Lee, but don't think they'd have done it for me with the other three.  I ran nature, food, and "D" and got all but Buzz Lightyear in protection, but not a good first round.

DJ didn't get any better; I was terrible in musicians - I only knew Three Dog Night - and didn't run anything.  I did get all but aikido in fight, all but Brazil in gemstones, and all but cesta/caste in vowel switch (I knew caste was the second word, but had never heard of cesta, so that didn't help me any), but missed two each in the rest.

I did get FJ, at least.  Until now, I didn't know a ferris wheel was actually a Ferris wheel, named after someone.  But spoke immediately took me to wheel, and thinking of a huge one immediately made me think ferris wheel, so I figured there must be some dude named Ferris and he's the correct response.
