This clip isn't very clear, but here he is with Gregory at the Tonys in 1979. I don’t know why it didn’t click for me at the time, but my then 9 year old nephew had the opportunity to tap with Maurice Hines in the last show he did (Tappin’ Thru Life). I got to meet him when I attended one of the performances at the Delaware Theater Company and a nicer man you could not meet. He was so very sweet to my nephew. 2 10 Link to comment

Blergh January 5 Share January 5 Miss Johns had an interesting life (as per wiki)! She had been born in (of all places) Pretoria, South Africa while her British theatrical parents were touring there. Sadly, her only child, British actor Gareth Forwood (by her 1st of 4 spouses) died of a heart attack in 2007 at age 62 but she has a surviving grandson and three great-grandchildren! Yes, that's one sad part of getting way up in years when one outlives most if not all of one's loved ones. Regardless, she left an unforgettable impression! RIP, Miss Johns! 7 Link to comment

The choke hold those Danny Kaye movies had on me back in the day. I still remember the mnemonic of them knowing which drink had the poison: "The Pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!" The Court Jester was great and Glynis Johns was luminous in it. RIP MS. Johns. 14 Link to comment

I always kind of respected the way she did that diving scene, strutting over to the pool and exuding confidence. These days, the movie would have put her in the skimpiest bikini, but she didn’t need that to make guys sweat. I thought she was going to write a memoir about her Caddyshack experiences, but I guess that’s not going to happen now. In happier news: Halle Bailey had a baby. Twitter had been obsessing about her pregnancy for months, and she never confirmed it up til now, and I respect her for basically saying that her body and baby was nobody’s business, and she’d announce it when she was damn well ready. Good for her. 8 Link to comment

Vermicious Knid January 8 Share January 8 Aisha Harris of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour wrote an entire article about her love of TCM's In Memorium montage. Quote Over time, however, TCM has become the gold standard for these sorts of exercises, understanding that to achieve an effective in memoriam, you have to strike just the right balance between sentimentality, fond remembrance and aesthetics. Sound is crucial. With TCM's memorials, the song selections are certainly sad and wistful and lamenting, capturing some sort of universal feeling about being young once or wishing to go back to "the night we met" – but they're not instantly recognizable funeral songbook standards... And unbeholden to the time constraints of live TV and the vanity of live musicians in accompaniment, these videos also seem to include a greater mix of marquee names, character performers, filmmakers, and craftspeople, and each gets their moment. Sure, some of those moments are drawn out longer than others and each person's placement within the mix isn't without its politics... Inevitably, this combo of sound, image, and memory will leave me utterly moved to tears or near-tears, even if the beats at this point have become familiar to any longtime TCM fan. I think it also probably stems from the way this template really echoes the medium it's honoring, and understands that the power of montage is in its persuasiveness and ability to stir up feelings when done thoughtfully. I don't think any awards show in memoriam has made me feel this way, and I'm not sure any can. 10 1 Link to comment

Blergh January 10 Share January 10 It has been reported in legit media outlets that the coroner has ruled Sinead O'Connor's July, 2023 cause of death as 'natural causes' but with no other information to be forthcoming. I suppose that might be more comforting to her loved ones than accidental death, suicide or murder but it's odd that they refuse to say what the 'natural cause' WAS. At least some questions have been cleared up even if others are left unanswered. 5 Link to comment

Is it? It seems to me that death by natural causes falls under privacy concerns and that statements by officials give minimal information so that a person’s medical information isn’t made public. The details generally come from leaks and reporters obtaining official reports that are public record. I’m sure the family members have all the available details but, sadly, sometimes the exact cause can’t be determined. Link to comment

Actually they are not always public records. Depends on the state. Birth, marriage and death records are not public in New York State. And they withhold the cause of death except when distributed to next of kin. If given out for a probate proceeding, for example, it won't have cause of death. Even people who are entitled to get the records have a hard time accessing them at times. It's all about concealing embarrassing information. In working on legal matters I have come across two cases of "shotgun weddings" where the parents had been lying to the children for years about the true date. 1 10 Link to comment

There was a time when, even if you didn't watch a particular soap opera, you had an awareness of who a show's stars were. Such was the case with Bill Hayes as Doug Williams on Days of Our Lives. Actor Bryan Cranston left the following tribute to Hayes in Deadline's comment section: Quote Bryan Cranston on January 12, 2024 10:19 pm One of my first professional acting jobs was on Days of Our Lives. It was 1980 and I won a 3 day gig on the show. My first day was a disaster. I failed to fully extend the stem on my alarm clock and missed my call time…Panicked, I raced to NBC and arrived over two hours late…I was embarrassed, and failed in my first attempt at making a positive impression. I missed the rehearsal of my two scenes, and the irritated stage manager arranged for an assistant to give me a quick review of the blocking, then I was on my own. Trying not to fall into a shame spiral, I was alone in my tiny dressing room when there was a knock on the door. I opened it to see Bill Hayes – the star of the show. For a moment I thought he was coming to fire me personally! Instead, he said some comforting words, commiserating with my situation, and asked if I wanted to know the backstory to the character and the scene. I was shocked. He spent 20 minutes helping a stranger to feel a little less humiliated. He really cheered me up. I will never forget his kindness and patience. From that moment, I think of Bill whenever I see an actor in need. Bill Hayes was a Prince, and a damn fine actor. Rest now, Bill, and thank you. — Bryan Cranston Edited January 14 by MissAlmond 11 2 26 Link to comment
