Emma Grede, the CEO and co-founder of fashion juggernaut Good American, founding partner of SKIMS and co-founder of Safely, returns to the Tank. First into the Tank are entrepreneurs from Bethesda, Maryland, and Seattle, Washington, who present their ultimate napping product designed to reduce stress and anxiety. A mother-and-daughter duo from Huntington Beach, California, introduce their product which allows kids to unleash their creativity without the mess; while an entrepreneur from Troy, New York, brings to the tank a line of luxurious and cozy accessories for the great outdoors. A husband and wife from College Park, Maryland, created a fashion-forward bridal brand that makes everyone in the bridal party feel beautiful and hope to land a deal.

In a "Shark Tank" update, Bo Habner and Rasmus Barfred from Charlotte, North Carolina, and their investor Robert Herjavec update us on The Magic5, their leak-proof, custom-fit swimming goggles.

The Sharks in this episode are Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Kevin O'Leary, Lori Greiner and guest Shark Emma Grede.

Emma Grede, Robert, Lori, Mark, Kevin

1- Plufl- A Dog Bed for Humans- of course Robert tries it out, and Mark too.   Memory foam, and plush material.  $399 each.   Landed cost $140.   They only have prototypes, they are ‘pre-sales’.   First delivery is supposed to be late November to early December.   They’re starting with 1200 units.    They think it will help with sensory issues, anxiety.     Emma and Robert are out.   Mark and Lori are offering, and Kevin is offering.

They make the deal with Mark and Lori.

2- Bridal Babes-bridesmaid’s dresses, bridal fashions for bridesmaid’s dresses with curves and Women of Color.   Gowns are in a wide range of sizes, colors.   Cost of dresses: affordable line is called Classic $44.05 retail, more expensive are Luxe collection $228.    They have a affordable dresses, in a great array of sizes.   The fabrics are lovely, look like satin, but stretchy.   $2 million lifetime sales.   $850k this year.   Projecting $1.2 million total.    They only sale direct to consumer, online.   (Husband was a football player, then a child psychiatric specialist, and a police officer, now he’s full time with this). I hope they’re ready for the Shark Tank surge in orders).   I hope Emma makes the deal, she would be a great partner.

Emma makes the deal for 20% of the company.

3- Big Bee Little Bee-holder to organize markers for arts and crafts. The holder grips the marker caps tight, making it easy for kids to find the one they want, and put it back so it won’t dry out.   Cute kid made drawings of each Shark.    It’s just the holder, not the markers included.   They have different size for wide tip markers, and fine tip markers.   It’s the kid’s invention.   Sells for $15, $2.71 to make landed. They also make straws, a non-sponge scrubber for kids.   Scrubber is 80% of sales.   Last year they sold $90k, profit $2200.   This year $110k.   They didn’t have the holder last year.   She’s not a good businesswoman.    Mark and Lori are right, she jumps from invention to invention, doesn’t perfect one before moving to another.  She’s overextended.

She wants a deal for the holders and scrubbers, straws, and silicone storage things (I don’t have the smallest hint of what that’s for), and maybe more stuff.

I wonder if the holders were pitched to Michaels and Hobby Lobby?   I think the marker holder would be great for the people who use the fabric paint markers for clothing or crafts too.

The seller isn't a business woman in any way.     I think Daymond would have been a good licensing partner for her.  She could keep inventing things, and Daymond could license them, no manufacturing involved except the prototype. I think if the seller would only be an inventor, and someone like Daymond licensed her products for her, it could be very profitable.

No deal.  After the sellers walk out, Kevin and Mark are razing Robert for crushing the seller’s hopes.

4- Pretty Rugged-Combines luxury with the great outdoors. Her company makes a blanket with water proof and windproof on one side, with faux fur. It’s a lifestyle brand for luxury outdoor clothing.   The duffle bags are actually blankets, outdoor jackets, and some of her products were on the list for Oprah’s Favorite Things.    Blanket is $290, jacket is $240 (or $230), margins are 70% to 80%.    Profits are very low for millions of dollars of sales.    Her numbers are bizarre.

Lori and Robert make the deal.

(What the hell did Lori do to her hair/wig?)

Update on the Magic5, custom swim goggles, deal with Robert, and later with Mark.  They’re doing great business, moving into other areas, like Virtual Reality headsets, and other partnerships.

Lori’s hair looked like those extensions got caught in a ceiling fan.

I saw the dog bed for people somewhere online and thought, WHY??  Take a nap on your bed, on the couch.  Who wants something that big on the floor of their living room or bedroom?

The bridal gowns were stunning!  Great business and they will do very well.  Awesome price range, super affordable.

The crafty things were cute, but the mom seemed…off.  Little girl was cute, but I would have guessed she was 5, not 7 1/2.  Pitches with whakadoo numbers, &/or too many products don’t do very well in the Tank.

Luxury camp coats and blankets look really nice.  I can see those being big for hanging around fire pits, or for kids soccer games. I would look into a blanket for a Christmas gift, but personally, I can’t justify $300 for one blanket.

I kind of liked the human/dog bed - I think it would be a lot more snuggly than a regular bed.  I wouldn't buy one, though, for a number of reasons (mainly it takes up a lot of room, would be hard for me to get out of).

Loved the bridal people (what a stunning couple) and their company.  Affordable, beautiful dresses for curvy women are badly needed.  I'm sure they will do well.

I can't even express how much I disliked that mother.  I don't care how cute and precocious the child was, it was unfair to put the whole burden of the presentation on her.  There was just something about the mother's responses, like they were over rehearsed or something., and of course, she was a crier.  I'd never do business with her.

Assume that Lori was wearing a fright wig as an early Halloween thing.

I have so many questions about the human dog bed:

  1. WHY?
  2. If cushioning/ pillows are your thing, what can you get from this that you can’t get from a pair of (cheaper) body pillows?
  3. Since it’s meant to provide a place to nap whenever and wherever you want, are you supposed to walk around with it strapped to your back like a turtle shell? How is this transportable?
  4. Who wants to sleep all scrunched up, like an overgrown hedgehog?
  5. Does this mean the dog gets your bed while you’re on the floor? Because mine would gladly trade.
  6. WHYYY?

That was seriously one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen pitched on this show. Someone also needs to tell them that high end dog beds already come with orthopedic mattresses and memory foam. That is not a novel idea. I do not know what Mark and Lori were drinking tonight, but I want some.

I absolutely believe people will buy a human-sized dog bed. C'mon, how many people have looked at their dog or cat chilling in their pet bed and thought "I wonder how comfortable that really is." For me, even though I'm pretty short I'm not comfortable having to scrunch up like that. Very Gen Z appeal.

The lead time for ordering a wedding gown is a year or more. Bridesmaids gown are almost as bad. Having one you can get in only a few months is an advantage. What they didn't say, but is probably also a big selling point, is these dresses can be worn to other functions as a nice outfit and don't scream "bridesmaid!" Every woman who has had to buy a bridesmaid dress knows you can pretty much never use them again *cough*. Prices are also very reasonable for this market. I was curious if it was a proprietary fabric but they didn't say. Took a look at the website and they sell some wedding and bride accessories as well, also a few white dresses probably used to change into for the reception. Limited designs, Shark should help them expand there.

I worked for one of the top two tradeshow contractors in the US. Tradeshows can be very, very expensive and some people aren't prepared for the costs. Or realize you are paying at minimum two different companies. You buy your space from the show, but bringing in the booth is a labor cost, setting it up may require labor-either from the show contractor or your own third party-and if you need electric, plumbing, AV/internet those are all contractors as well. Exclusive contracts or union labor only. Sometimes different ones for each service. Need a crane or forklift? It'll cost hundreds, if not a few thousand. And remember, anything that goes up must also come down or be disassembled. Hourly rates for equipment and labor, in and out. There are ways to cut down on costs though, and if Pretty Rugged doesn't have someone whose job is just to take care of the shows, she needs one.

The mother-daughter presentation just tells me that losing marker caps is a big problem and someone should be out there selling packs of replacement caps.

I found it sad that the little girl (mom always wanted to be on ST and she got what she wanted) had a lot more perspective than mom (no I didn’t ).  Our dogs much prefer sleeping on our beds than theirs.  Just saying.

I didn’t check the website to see if it’s true for all the dresses, but I didn’t like how shiny all the dresses were that they showed on ST.  The last several weddings I’ve been to- the bridesmaids dresses weren’t shiny. Shiny materials like that look cheap to me.

I bought an orthopedic bed for my dog because she was having arthritic issues, so that guy saying they “changed” the bed to be orthopedic just wasn’t true. I wouldn’t get in one of those because I have bad knees and it would be hard for me to get in and out of it, let alone up off the floor.

I think the marker lady thought that she would get a deal if she had her daughter do a lot of the talking. I think that backfired, along with her scattered business.

Yet, she really didn't really have a decent sob story. I couldn't figure out what she was crying about. "My parents gave me so much encouragement, boo-hoo, boo-hoo!" I guess that is what we are supposed to have come to expect from people raised with participation trophies for doing the most menial tasks.

That comment about she had now lived out her dream of being on Snark Tank made me wonder if she really even wanted a deal or if she was just there to fulfill some big fantasy of hers.

How was this not a conflict of interest with their other sensory deprivation sleeping thing?

Between my 1970s beanbag chair and my 1980s waterbed, the cat and I already have enough comfortable places to sleep at home (the cat also likes the desk in front of the computer screen; I haven't yet figured out how to make that comfortable for myself).

I couldn't figure that out, either. It sounded as though they were trying to advocate taking it to the park, the back of the car, or the office with you, which seemed like a lot of trouble for very little benefit.

When they first started the presentation, I thought was going to be something to sleep comfortably on airplanes, and I was all ears. When they really didn't explain where you were supposed to use it, and they had to explain to Robert and Mark how to roll around in it to get themselves comfortable, I lost interest in it pretty quickly.

She said curvy women can't wear satin but didn't say why. Does anyone know?

The Bridal Babes material is shiny, but has stretch, satin doesn't.   And satin is much harder to work with than the materials the collection has.   Satin also shows every lump and bump.       I really liked the styles, and the price, and much quicker delivery than a conventional bridal line.

I was ready to buy one since I live in a cold, windy climate. However, then I heard what her margins were. I'm okay with the seller making a profit, but 80% is too much of my money funding her addiction to going to trade shows.

After checking her website, there is only one style I sort-of like, but it doesn't come in forest green, which I need for my uniform because I volunteer at the zoo. I'm not sure how well faux fur would go over at the zoo, either.

Right now, it is $199. Everything on her website is marked down. That makes me wonder if Lori and Robert told her to lower her prices.

Ironically, she also makes a dog blanket, so maybe she and the Plufl people shouldn't have been on the same episode.

I have often wondered how much the margin talk turns off potential customers. Like, when someone sees a product on here and thinks “oh, that looks useful! I’d pay the $30 list price for that!” but then finds out the cost to make it is $1.20… do they think “good for the entrepreneur!” or does the product now seem like an overpriced piece of crap?

Honestly, I’ve had both reactions. Sometimes it’s better for the seller if the buyer doesn’t know.

I still wasn't clear why the pretty rugged woman wasn't making any money with those margins. And why so many trade shows then if that's where the money is going?  Why not just sell online?

Bee woman was annoying and unfocused. Likes inventing but not running a business.

I can see the person dig bed for kids if they have sleepovers.  Give friends somewhere to sleep and then can store it instead of a big bulky mattress. Price though fir $400.  For adults?  Not sure the point.

I know nothing about dresses or weddings so....whatever. that's one of them though I think they bring in for one investor.  You knew who was going to do the deal. Almost like a set up so they could announce the deal on the show.

The Sharks are super inconsistent with that. Someone will say, "We manufacture here in the U.S.A., and Mark will whoop while raising a fist as the rest of the Sharks cheer. Then in the next segment, they're praising the presenter that manufactures in China, so they sell for 1000% markup. It's preposterous.

A shoe brand I used to wear manufactured the plastic/synthetic styles in the U.S, because they could find a good manufacturer, at a good price.   .   However, they did the leather shoes in China, because no manufacturer in the U.S. would give them a decent price including manufacture, and transportation.    There are a lot of options if a company is willing to go overseas, but doesn't want to use China.

I really dislike parents shilling their kids on this show. I don’t care if the kid did invent it. They can’t sign contracts. I felt she was going for the sympathy vote. Plus way too scattered.

I live in a cold snowy state and we do a lot of outdoor fires year around. I was tempted by the blanket but then remembered that a stray spark could melt this stuff to goo.

The human dog beds…I can see that as a hit on college campuses. Even if you put it on your bed. Kind of a nap zone. Not for me, too big and cluttery.

To me, what backfired was that it showed how clearly the little girl is not at all involved in anything beyond just (supposedly) having come up with some of the ideas.  Also, the sharks never like that kind of unfocused product line.  I knew that would be the case as soon as I saw that her promotional display said "Big Bee, Little Bee", but the product she was hawking was called the Marker Parker.  Clearly she didn't know how the sharks feel, because near the end of her pitch, after Robert (?) had gone out, she said something to him like, "You're going to want to come back in because..." and then she went on to start showing that flat gray silicone thing that the kid said could hold an apple, without a clue that last thing the sharks wanted to see was another product.  In fact, IIRC that was when the whole thing fell apart and I think one of the sharks stopped her right in the middle of explaining about the flat silicone thing (which isn't even on the website).

I was curious and went to the website.  It indicates that machine washable cover is easy to remove, but it looks like it might be hard to put it back on.  Also, bizarrely, for the section of the home page where they have pictures to illustrate four major benefits, the picture for "Tuck your hands and feet inside the heavenly pillow border", shows someone with their hand resting on the outer rim and NOT inside the border!

I would assume people would sleep in it like dogs would. One of our dogs curls up in hers but sometimes rest her head and paws on the rim. Your body is just naturally going to get into the most comfortable position just like a dog would.

Cute dog.

I talked about some of the costs associated with a tradeshow, but that was only the show itself. There's also the expenses of transportation of the people, shipping your booth and products, hotel rooms, food and anything else they want to do. Do you take in a stage show, do touristy things, hit that $150 a person steakhouse? That's thousands and thousands more. I know in Las Vegas hotel rates go through the roof when a major show is in town. If she's paying $20,000 a show, which is really easy to do for the big ones, and attending did she say 20? No wonder her balance sheet is terrible.

What on earth was Emma saying about how one of the reasons she doesn't want to do the deal is that young people are shunning even fake fur?  Is this true?  I've seen no indication of that and actively looked for stuff on the Internet and couldn't find anything.

Fake fur is made from synthetics and isn’t recyclable.  That may be why  it is falling out of favour with young ecologically minded people.

Yeah, that was my thought. I don't have kids, but I do remember using markers a lot as a kid. I don't remember lost caps ever being a problem.  Plus that thing was ugly and took up lots of extra space. You wouldn't be able to put the markers away in a drawer.

I think the market holder is aimed at the people who have the art table and craft room in the separate kid's playroom.      It's not for the rest of use.   However, I think it would have a bigger market with crafters who do fabric painting, or other crafts where they change markers a lot, and need easy access.    I think the seller is too narrowly focused on items for kid's playtime and art, when her real market is adults who use an array of markers.       I think the adult hobby and craft stores would be a better market, which is why she needs someone like Daymond who does licensing.

The scrub device has some people that love it, but there are several reviewers that say it's too small.

She doesn't have the silicone thing on her Amazon site either.   Just the marker holder, the scrub device, and that's all.   Putting all of her products on Amazon before going on ST would have been a good strategic move.   She's an inventor, not a business woman or marketer.

I looked at the Bridal Babes, and they have some really attractive items.  My problem as a plus-size woman I can't really do strapless, or really narrow straps/armless styles.  The models looked good, but they wouldn't work for me.

I do not understand the dog beds at all.  Why would I climb down on the floor, to climb into a thing on the floor, and haul myself off the floor afterwards when I have a perfectly good bed?  Not to mention the space that it takes up?  I'm with Emma: I don't get it at all!

The dresses: I checked out the website, and they are all over $200 (except for a couple on sale) - so I don't get the lower end models that she mentioned.  $200 is not a horrible price for a dress, but I personally wouldn't spend that much on a Christmas-party type dress, and spending that + all the other stuff required of a bridesmaid is adding up to a lot.  The styles are quite nice, but I find that the fabric is way too shiny.

The Pretty Rugged lady has a good thing going, but I think that with a re-adjustment, she can probably be profitable.  I also don't understand Emma's comment about fake fur.

Big bee, little bee: OMG! That woman!  Her daughter comes to her with a marker idea.  Instead of teaching her that the product has to go into the pipeline, and work it into the schedule and budgeting, she drops the container idea, and goes many thousands of dollars into debt so that she doesn't crush her wee daughter's dreams!  Lady, you are not teaching her anything good here.  She's all over the place with no focus.  The tears! Why?!  She seemed a few pancakes short of a stack.  Not surprised that she didn't get a deal.

I could see the daughter inventing the marker holder, as that seems like one of those thoughts a kid would have, but I think the company as a whole is all mom and you could tell. It was her that wanted to be on the show so bad, and to push everything on the daughter was horrible.
