Not M&Ms, so a bit OT, but Oreos are branching out with a ton of Limited Edition flavors, too. I LOVE Reese's peanut butter cups, but I do not recommend the Reese's Oreos. Blech. The peanut butter half of the cream is so dry, but the chocolate was okay. But the chocolate cookie seemed...harder or something.

On the other end of the spectrum? Lemon Oreos? LOVE. The vanilla (Golden) Oreo with Lemon cream. So good. Not too tart or too sweet. And I guess that is now a permanent flavor. I think so, anyway...

Pretzel M&M's weren't good.

I keep all of our M&Ms in the fridge (hubby likes peanut butter, kids like plain, I love the pretzel) so they are more firm (firmer?) and it changed the texture of the pretzel ones enough that I went from "interesting--I'm not sure I like these" as being my thoughts on them to "oh, these are good!". It was definitely a texture thing for me.

I want basic chocolate in basic colors.

Anyone remember the light brown ones?  When I was really little, I loved caramel and chocolate, so I convinced myself that they were caramel covered (even if I had to admit you couldn't really taste any caramel).

I do. They were my sister's favorites & she was so upset when they got replaced. I wanted blue or purple to win over pink so I was happy. And that's a sad example of sibling rivalry in the trivial.

I prefer peanut M&M's over plain, unless the plain are mixed with Reese's Pieces. While I like the peanut butter M&M's by themselves putting them with plain mixes too much chocolate in the ratio. (Wow, that sounds specific for a little candy.) My absolute favorite M&M are the white chocolate peppermint that are sold around Christmas time. I love peppermint so much. I wish they'd make a dark chocolate peppermint version. I'd have to try it. Simply for comparison's sake of course.

Yep.  The tan ones were replaced with the blue ones.  I boycotted M&Ms for awhile after that.  I was super sad.

& I don't like dark chocolate at all, so dark chocolate M&Ms are a no-go for me.

I also remember the light brown M&Ms. I also remember when red M&Ms were not part of the colors originally because of the red dye/cancer controversy. The red came about in...I want to say sometime in the '80s. I wish I could recall all the original plain colors. I know there was the light and dark brown, light green, yellow, and orange, but I thought there was an additional color. Maybe not.

Anyone remember Royals? They were basically mint M&Ms and were light green and brown-colored M&Ms with mint flavoring and instead of an "m" on its front, Royals had a little crown? It didn't seem to last long and faded quickly; I remember commercials as a kid/teen around the early to mid '80s. Just to prove my childhood memory was right, here is a picture of a Royals wrapper someone uploaded. LOL!

Here is another picture with the candy itself.

Here's a fun diversion/history lesson for you! http://www.sporcle.com/games/MVP/colorcandy

Peanut, although I rarely have M&Ms and I can even tell you the last time I had any.  This is apropos because of the "are they even food?" option: on a road trip a year and a half ago, driving back from Colorado to Missouri ....which is why Peanut M&Ms now remind me of Limon CO. I was starving and had a few hours to drive before I could get to an area with restaurants that had any kind of "you could call this vegetarian...maybe...?" food on the menu.  So I was at the world's grossest convenience store, filling up the tank and desperately trying to find something to eat that would keep me from a fit of low-blood-sugar road rage, before heading into the territory patrolled by Kansas state troopers trying to fund the state coffers by pulling over anyone who looked likely to pay the darned ticket for blinking, or steering or whatever reason they could make up for pulling someone over.

Peanut M&Ms filled the bill and I set the cruise control and drove through to Hayes.  So I come down firmly on the "sure, it's food" side of the argument.

Although these days I get Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered almonds for chocolate fixes, M&Ms (Peanut, because I can tell myself the peanuts have protein ) are a friend when I am in need.

Crispy! I used to love the Crispy M&Ms...but then they got rid of them. The orange M&M repped the Crispies on the commercials, but now they've recycled him to be the gross Pretzel M&M.

The Peanut Butter ones are awesome. I feel like I can't usually find them around here very often, except around Easter.

People above were mentioning Red Velvet and Carrot Cake ones??? I had no idea such a thing existed. They sound gross...I have an aversion to ever even trying the Birthday Cake ones...I don't know why.

I find the Coconut ones and the Mint ones to be underwhelming, which was disappointing because I love coconut and mint.

As DH and I were coming back home from visiting out-of-state relatives, we stopped at a truck stop/restaurant/casino, and I found the dark chocolate mint M&Ms! They were delicious, imo. As long as the chocolate is tasty and whatever other flavor is tasty as well, I'm game. Carrot cake is not one of my regular fave flavors, so that would not be something I'd be interested in. Luckily, that means more for wovenloaf!

Plain.  Like the Peanut too, but had to give up having any M&Ms at all because of the Plain.  I was absolutely addicted to them, eating them at work, scarfing them when reading or watching TV.  I was buying them in those giant bags the size of pillows.

Gave 'em up.  Haven't had any in about fifteen years.  For real.  So I've never had any of the dark chocolate ones, or any of the other variations.  What's odd is that I don't crave them when I see them.  Wonder why?

Peanut.  I like them melty, like when they've been sitting on a dashboard in the sun.  In my own version of America's Test Kitchen, I figured out how to simulate it--take one snack-size bag (has I think 7 or 8 in there), tear off the top, prop it up on the rack in the microwave, and nuke for 1 minute 5 seconds.  Deeeeelicious.

You guys know Crispy M&Ms are back, right? Only now they're in a light/medium greenish bag 'cause Pretzel took over the blue bag & they're still making the Pretzel ones.

Also, a few years ago they had a Dulce de Leche flavor, which was a limited time thing, & mostly available out West, I think. I never tried them/couldn't get any, but I sure wanted to.

As for my favorite types: 1) Plain/Milk Chocolate, 2) Crispy, 3) Pretzel.
