What I've read is that supposedly advertisers aim at a younger demographic because they are the most susceptible to advertising, plus they have more years of spending ahead of them so inspiring brand loyalty in them might ensure more years of future sales.  The problem with this logic is it's based on a 1970s reality, not today's.  People today are living longer so they really should think about revising this.  People today are living 40+ years past 50 (my dad is 90).

What has changed since the 70s?  Are the people in that age group less susceptible to advertising?  Are older people more susceptible?  If anything, the fact that people live longer is even more reason to hook them at that age.

What has changed since the '70s is that people are living longer now.  Back then they figured that at 50 one could reasonably be expected to live another 20 years at most so they would not be alive much longer to buy things and are therefore not worth being the focus of advertising (so the logic goes - I didn't make this up).  They didn't realize that people were going to start living a lot longer due to medical discoveries and better medical procedures, etc.  I say the fact that people live longer now is more reason for them to extend the age for considering them prime advertising targets even by their own logic, because people at 50 may have another 30+ years of buying years ahead of them.

That makes sense but I thought older people are either value shoppers or brand loyal (in that they like their Cottonelle toilet paper and no Charmin squeezin' commercials will get them to change) whereas younger people are still prone to persuasion.

I've heard it put that younger people are more open to trying new things and so are more susceptible to advertising in general.  The bit about brand loyalty is also IMO an outdated concept.  I can see where brand loyalty was big 30-40 years ago among older people but now that I'm getting older myself I see that it's not so true anymore.  My generation (late Boomer) was raised on watching TV so we were raised to be good little consumers, susceptible to advertising, unlike former generations that were not raised with TV ads and grew up during the Great Depression and the rationing of WWII.  My generation grew up during prosperous times, so we are inherently less conservative and more "spendy" and open to new products than our parents were.  And I don't think that has changed a whole lot as we have aged.  But of course I'm just a theoretician, no one listens to me!

ETA:  Today it's not even possible to be "brand loyal" over one's lifetime as products change constantly now and a lot of stutf we used to like doesn't even exist anymore or has completely changed.  We have to change whether we like it or not and by now it's just a fact of life, not something we resist.

Ha. I'm a librarian so I want research.  But am I going to do it?  Nah.

Too busy consuming.

My father is 77 and he loves cooking shows. Pioneer Woman is one of his favorites.

That is so funny, my 90 year old father loves the Pioneer Woman and I didn't even know he watched Food Network until this past weekend!  He said, "I love that woman that lives all the way out in the middle of nowhere with her family".  I said, "Oh, you mean the Pioneer Woman?"  And I couldn't stop laughing!!

It's actually a big topic of discussion in marketing circles about brand loyalty for millennials and how it has changed since past generations, though they all agree diversity of devices plays a role. The CEO of McDonalds said a few years ago that "Millennials are promiscuous in their brand loyalty and make us work harder to earn it". In recent surveys they mark themselves higher than other generations for being "brand loyal" but much lower for actually caring about ads. So everyone is trying to figure out the magic combination that can get them a customer for the next 40 years.

Most cable networks look at the affluent 25-(59?) demo.

I wasn't paying much attention, but I swear I saw Toya ( with the amazing hair that she didn't pull back while working in the kitchen) on Hallmark Home and Family yesterday afternoon.   She cooked jambalaya and talked about New Orleans, so I think it was the same chef.  She appeared to be a contestant on a cooking contest they were having.

The favorite survey is all about getting clicks on their site.  They have never rewarded a fan favorite, that I remember and I doubt it will influence their choice.   We already see they favor Jason and just love Rusty's big personality.

I am not entirely sure where to post this but here goes. What happened to Lenny McNabb who won and then was busted for all sorts of obscene comments about other Food Network chefs? Did the Food Network send him off to hang out with Shelley Miscavage or something?

Take your question to the Food Network Star Alums thread, plus read all about it there. FN won't even rerun the season he won. They seem to think if they never mention him, everyone will forget. In the grand scheme of things, I doubt most people at this point even know he existed in the FN world. Talk about a major mess FN had to clean up or more likely they decided to cover up.,

Correct! I asked Martie Duncan, she told me this:

Nothing that I am aware of-- but I'm sure attention from the fans of the show may possibly mean new opportunities down the road? Plus they do invite some of the fan favorites back for another shot-- comeback kitchen, etc.

She's doing well, getting lots of invites for guest appearances at various places. Staying busy.

If any of you follow Food Network on Facebook, there is a little video or gif of Matthew eating something, with the caption saying "Not hungry?" Or something along those lines. Anyway, Matthew posted there, and told everyone to join him online live last Sunday night. The 25th was when this was posted.

Go in and read ALL of the people saying how much they hate him, they aren't watching until he's eliminated, etc. Not a peep from Matthew back to them, but he's got his female minions singing his praises.

From Eater,

Quote

Geoffrey Zakarian, TV chef, owner of The Lambs Club and The National, and premier room service provider at the Borgata Resort & Casino, has filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to avoid fighting a class action suit with almost one hundred of his former chefs at Country, his restaurant that closed in 2008. There are a lot of ins and outs on this one, but basically, all his old chefs are seeking $1 million in damages and $250,00 in penalties for failing to pay them overtime, falsifying records, and deducting uneaten family meals from their pay.

Meanwhile his old partners, who have the workers' backs after settling with them in a different suit, are pretty much accusing him of bankrupting the restaurant by giving away too many meals to friends and family, expensing high end dinners on the company's credit card, taking four percent off the top of an unprofitable restaurant, failing to pay the proper taxes, and adding his wife to the payroll to the tune of $70,000 a year. For his part, Zakarian admits no wrongdoing.

There's been discussion about FNS' efforts to shoehorn social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) I can't explain the initial push, but it's a strategy that fits in with Discovery, the future owner of Scripps, FN's parent company. (Trigger alert. Big! photo of Guy.)

Let's see, here I am with a bone-in chicken breast that I want to turn into chicken salad.  I want to watch someone do it so I don't cut my finger off trying.  Shall I choose chef Matthew on Food Network, a name I can trust?  Only if I get to watch him cut his finger off.

We don't really have a place for Alton Brown news, so putting this here: Return of the Eats will air on Food Network next year (with extra content available online)...  Let's get a forum going!

I knew FN wasn't dumb enough to have it streaming only.

I think Alton forced their hand by moving forward with it on his own. Sort of "well if FN isn't doing cooking shows anymore and only want gameshows and travel & eats, I'll do it myself!" I think he alluded to that in the video above when he joked that to make room for his show FN had to cut DDD down to 7 1/2 hrs of programming a week. (Honestly if they dropped it that low they'd have room for a half a dozen new shows).

I was just thinking last night how I would schedule the network if I ran it. I would probably have The Kitchen Monday to Friday at 9 PM ET (Live M-T with Friday as a recap hosted by the social media host which sorry would be Matthew) with two cooking shows in the 10 PM hour M-T. Friday would be The travel shows but far less DDD new episodes. Sunday would be FNS/GFTR/etc followed by airing all the filmed episodes of all the weeknight comp shows I canceled until I run out and then Iron Chef will be at 10 PM. Also I would have the winner of FNS have their S&S show premiere right after the 30 MINUTE finale (guide would still list it as an hour long so it's caught in DVRs and likewise.

I just found out about this while googling on other things - This is GREAT news, I'm very happy to hear it, it's the answer to a prayer I've had for a long time now ever since "Good Eats" went off the air.  It will be good to see Alton doing what he does best.

This biggest shocker:  #Matthew isn't returning to cry about his 8th try.

They're really reaching back into the vault with Adam and Debbie.   Not happy to see the 'love chef' back.  I can't place Monterey for some reason I think she bugged.

Christian Petroni.  I know that name but I can't think why.

I'm glad Yaku is getting another chance.

He's been on Chopped and Beat Bobby Flay.

I did like Yaku so I am happy. Adam is random given he had his own show.

I was thinking Chopped but I wasn't sure.  So he's an actual working chef and should be able to cook - not that that's the primary criterion for FNS.  :)

IIRC she was a model or something. I liked her and again IIRC she got the short shaft ont he main show and Star Salvation. I hope she wins Comeback and FNS but I also wouldn’t be upset at Yaku. Trace needs to be the first one gone.

EDIT: Her season is on Hulu if you can stomach Ms Fleek.

On the returnee list, Adam and Monterey are the names that stood out to me. I had to google the others to remember anything about them.  (Though after googling Yaku, I was happy to see him back.)  Adam can't be there to win the competition because he's been on the network sporadically ever since his season.  I really don't think that they believe it would make good TV to watch him beat newbies.  He's probably shared a green room with all of the potential judges at some point or another.  As for Monterey, I vaguely remember her having a sense of humor when her dish was a trainwreck and that she is very, very pretty.

I just looked at the mini bios for each contestant on the FN site and every one of them this year has qualifications of some kind.  It should be an interesting season.

Christian Petroni looks like he's gained a ton of weight since he was on Chopped.

As for Redemption, I liked Yaku a lot except for his icky beard.  I hope he wins because I wasn't impressed with the rest of them although I did like Jernard and Monterey.  I am NOT looking forward to seeing Sarah again.  She was all "Look at me!  I want to be famous!!!"  She was not popular in the forums.

Squeeeeeeee!!!! So excited for this to return (without Matthew)!!! I remember I loved Yaku! Tripping over myself to go set this on TiFaux!

Wondering why Harrison Bader's name is ringing so many bells for me but I suspect maybe there's just a baseball player with a similar name and my Jarlsberg chunk that passes as an excuse for a brain is misremembering.

ETA I checked and feel better now. Not only is there a Harrison Bader who plays for the Cardinals but he actually went to high school at my dad's alma mater (where my dad held many baseball records for about 60 or 70 years until Pedro Alvarez broke a bunch of them)
