So, you made me google it - it's Occidental Petroleum. Which is also really bad. But...Texas...
  2. I've actually heard (and possibly seen on SNL) of 14 acts, one of which is Idris Elba. What the hell is Idris Elba going to do at Coachella??
  3. I used to subscribe to Gourmet and Bon Appetit, but one went out of business and the other just wasn't interesting to me. I also subscribed to Newsweek but not anymore (didn't they stop publishing for a while? Otherwise, I don't know why I would have stopped). Now the only print magazine we get is The Week (which I love, even though they try to overcharge me every year). I read the New York Times (mostly for theatre) and the Baltimore Sun online, and get the Sunday Washington Post delivered. The rest of the week, I read it online. I also got a year online subscription to The New Yorker during a public radio pledge drive, and a year subscription to the LA Times for a dollar through AFI. I feel like I need more time to sit on my couch and read.
  4. I recommend Company, Girl From the North Country and Hadestown if you want to see a few shows, but skip the entire season subscription.

And in 1988, the Os started 0-21 and that year ended... oh never mind. Nothing good happened there. They almost made the playoff the following year, so yay?

Because it's really not all that much fun watching in person? 😉
  7. I believe this subject was covered in the Chit Chat thread that was eaten by the internet gods, so I'll ask (again) here. I'm going to a baby shower in about a month and instead of a card, she's asking for a book that I'll sign and whenever the child reads it, he/she will always remember Auntie E (even though we'll probably spent close to no time together). I would welcome any suggestions as to what book to buy. When this happened last time, I ended up buying a Sandra Boynton box-set, and a copy of Peter Pan that I have from my childhood (beautifully illustrated). The only reason I'm not immediately going with either or both of those is that the last baby shower was for her cousin, so I feel like those may not be a good idea this time due to the repetitive factor. Thanks for any help!

A lovely day at the ballpark...except it was cold and there were too many people there. The game was good ...
  9. Your parents are in CA, right? I was reading in the LA Times that they're starting to re-enforce the rule about having people over 70 come in to take the written test and an eye test. Someone mentioned they had to go back 3 times, but finally passed it on the third try. Good luck to your dad...unless you don't think he should drive, then not-good luck to your dad. And, I believe there's an aging parents thread in the health section. I'll try to find it. ETA: I think I was remembering this one, although it's not limited to parents:
  10. Nicely done... 😉 I thought Quinta was wonderful. I laughed a lot during the first half of the show - not so much towards the end. It was a slightly better than average episode.

Well, so much for the Os undefeated season...
  12. Went to Miss Shirley's in Baltimore today for brunch. I had this omelette: Fried Buttermilk Boneless Chicken Breast Pieces, Peppadews, Green Onion & White Cheddar, topped with House-Made Pimento Cheese Biscuit & Chicken Andouille Sausage Gravy, dusted with Cajun Spice I'll never eat again.

Os had the Clydesdales a few years ago. There's really nothing traditional happening. But honestly, who needs anything but baseball!! Happy Baseball Season everyone!
  14. Maybe you saw the filmed version of the Menier Chocolate Factory production about 10 years ago? I saw it in a movie theater and...the show still didn't work. Maria Friedman directed that version, and she has directed the version opening on Broadway, so I'm not expecting this one to work either. But the cast and the score will get me through it. Also, The Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened is wonderful and sad.

Oh... you had me right up until the end... 😄
  16. It's been a few years, but we just went with the Super Shuttle (or whatever it's called now) from and back to the airport. We were staying in the downtown area though, so didn't need a car. Mr. ebk was working, so I wandered around during the day. Particularly loved the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Ryman Auditorium tours, and hanging out at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge listening to music. I also loved the Tennessee State Museum, which used to be across the street from our hotel (and free!), but I was informed that it has moved, although still in the downtown area. We really enjoyed our dinner at Etch. The other place we loved, The Capitol Grille, has closed. There are a few posts a couple pages back all about Nashville. They may be of some help to you, @Leeds

I have no idea why this makes me so happy, but it does.
  18. Where to begin... The show premiered in 1981. I think it ran for about 2 weeks. I saw one of the first previews, where the most memorable thing to me was a character crashing into a paper swimming pool. Yes, really. The book is not good. That said, the score is glorious. I love it so much. And the theme of the show - old friends - touches me deeply. And that's why I've tried to see most of the rewrites to the book. People have been trying to fix it since 1981, but I really think it's not fixable. However, I'll always go just to hear the score. And this time, to see Daniel Radcliff. I've never read a Harry Potter book, nor seen any of the movies, but I've seen him on stage and he throws himself into everything so convincingly. I'm really looking forward to this. I'm pretty certain the show still won't work overall, but still... I keep hoping.
  19. Went to see Lyle Lovett at The Birchmere a couple of weeks ago. He was with the acoustic band this time. I'd never seen this particular formation and they are spectacular. Lyle and 4 guys - piano, bass, keyboard, guitar. The show was about 3 hours and was so enjoyable. And, before the show, while we were waiting in line to go in, Lyle came out to take pictures of us - for some unknown reason. Then, he took time to work the line as we were going in - again, for some unknown reason. But, it was delightful. I stole this pic from someone's Twitter. It's the perfect picture of my big, orange phone 😄

You should go! I think it's great that you know when your first game was and who the opponent was. I have no idea when my first game was, other than sometime in the late 60s.
  21. Got tickets to Merrily in January! I'm so excited that I keep forgetting I'll be making a trip to NYC in August. I guess I should plan that one first.
  22. I was quite surprised to see her there on the set and worried that she's try to actually say something. Fortunately, she didn't. Love Bomani.
  23. First day of Spring is my wedding anniversary (20 years today!), so that's fun. Also, spring means baseball!!! Can't think of anything bad about it at the moment.
  24. I really enjoyed Something Rotten, Spamalot and Book of Mormon. I wish I could say the same for Beetlejuice. Maybe it's because I saw the second show ever (the pre-Broadway tryout in DC) and it just wasn't any good at that point. I just felt it wasn't even good enough to try again later after it was "fixed." That said, there seems to be lots of folks who love it as much as you do. So as long as you had a great time, go with that!
