  1. Is this a remake of It Happened on Fifth Avenue? If so, its worth watching the original on HBO Max. Its in Black and white with the Skipper from Gilligans Island and Wilbur from Mr. Ed. Ok some of the old fashioned themes are anti feminist but its still funny and sweet. One has to remember that it was made a very long time ago (1947). I enjoyed Christmas at the Castle or whatever it was called. It doesn't look as if Brooke Shields or Cary Elwes has had any work done other than maybe coloring their hair. That's refreshing to see! I've been enjoying Christmas Hard except someone upthread spoiled the end for me. If you're going to tell us how the movie turns out or who someone ends up with please put it in spoiler tags as not all of us have seen all these movies yet. Thanks
  2. Just because both hosts spent a little time on SNL doesn't mean they aren't talented and successful. Shoot take a look at the list of former SNL players and their success rates- --spoiler: its a long list with a great deal of success! I dont watch SNL anymore and haven't since college which was a long time ago but I know who Maya and Andy are. Andy spent the last 6 years as the star of the critically acclaimed comedy Brooklyn 99, and Maya has been in everything from from Bridesmaids to The Good Place. That said, I think the eliminations have been pretty random with strong bakers leaving while a couple teams slide by I think more because of their story rather than their baking. And yes, the Maya/Andy shtick got old quickly as they seemed to ramp it up towards the end. Overall I enjoyed this as a.pleasant holiday baking show.
  3. I enjoy this show. But I've always had a soft spot for Topher Grace. That 70s Show wasn't the same after he left despite the stellar supporting cast. That said I feel his Tom character is a bit too much like Eric Forman grown up. I wish they would have his character be a little less geeky writer and give him something meatier to work with. I won't get too attached to the show as ratings are.bad and I've gotten burned too many times with network sitcoms that I truly enjoyed (ahem Better off Ted, the Kids Are Alright, Schooled, Bless this Mess, The Mick) being cancelled too soon. I enjoy all the characters in this one especially Connor's housekeeper!
  4. Fondant is trendier I think because its easier to use. Anyone can learn to roll out the play doh like substance and mold it into shapes or cut into flowers etc. Icing flowers, borders, etc require skill and practice. I remember on an early season of Next Great Baker Buddy Valastro being amazed at the cakes a contestant made who only used icing and no fondant. This is why I thought the other two cakes were superior to Luis and Natalie's as they didn't rely on fondant. Back to the finale I guess I'm of the opinion that producers wanted Luis and Natalie to win so basically threw out the crime scene element to play to their wow factor decorating style. Some of their other desserts were nicely done but still overrated imo. After all, this competition wasn't about decorating but detecting!
  5. Luis and Natalie's cake looked like a birthday cake for a child not an adult woman. It was leaning and they covered it with fondant. My mother was a cake decorator with Wilton for many years. She always said fondant was for lazy cake decorators. She did amazing cakes using icing only. I think both of the other teams decorated theirs and didn't rely on fondant. As for Jason and Lorie, I thought their cake was a sophisticated design suitable for a birthday for an adult! Their getting a house stuff was annoying but may well have been producer driven. I was rooting for them. Not sure I will watch another season. I didn't like the finale format at all. It seemed to throw out the crime scene mystery dessert format just so Yolanda could pick her favorites as the winners. There was no suspense at all by the end. They may as well have given Luis and Natalie the money weeks ago.
  6. Although I have to say the illustrations are spot on from Charlotte's bow to Louis' eyebrows!
  7. Yes yes yes - I've been hating that there wasn't a thread for this show, but I don't know how to start one. So thank you! I love this show. I also was looking for something to watch that was similar to Ted Lasso to see if I wanted to pay for Apple Plus before my free trial ran out. We have family who have gone through the adoption process in the US, so I know how difficult it is here. I'm enjoying seeing the process in the UK. Imelda Staunton is excellent in everything, but I really enjoy the harried social worker with a heart of gold and quirky sense of humor she's bringing. I had seen Rafe Spall in other things but never realized he was Timothy Spall's son. Seriously one can play six degrees of Kevin Bacon with UK actors based on the Harry Potter movies alone. Like with Ted Lasso, I enjoy the side characters here as much as Jason and Nikki. Looking forward to season 3!
  8. I like Lori and Jason but i agree that i dislike their sob story about the house fire. Good grief, didn't they have insurance? As for Thomas and Cathy, I knew as soon as I saw their extra clue that it was a tower not a triangle. Geez, he's a pastry chef so one would think he would have thought about a macaron tower especially with the almond flour and cream of tartar clues. I saw him a few seasons ago on Chopped Sweets and he got chopped the first round. Apparently, he's a reality tv junkie. That made me start routing against him even before he started making smug remarks. I hate when people make the rounds of reality shows to get their 15 minutes of fame. I don't mind Ken Jeong. I think its cool that he gave up his physician career that his parents wanted for him to pursue his own dream of comedy.
  9. That's surprising. She was the lead for several seasons of the Emmy nominated sitcom New Girl as well as starring in several well known films including 500 Days of Summer with Joseph Gordon Leavitt, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and most famously as Jovie in the Xmas classic "Elf". She's a decent singer too and is known for her manic pixie fashion style. Sad that she is described not as an accomplished actor/singer but only as a live in lover of a Property Brother even if it is true! That said--this show is incredibly stupid but I'm 6 for 6 in predicting who will be picked! Its fun to have on while I'm preparing summer music lessons as its funny and can mostly be listened to rather than watched.
  10. Reading through this thread was a trip down memory lane that I thoroughly enjoyed. Vermont Country Store does have so many of the things mentioned here and their shipping isn't too expensive! I've used classic Noxema since I was a teen with acne and it works great for sun burn and as a makeup remover. One perfume I wore back in the day that wasn't mentioned here was Jean Nate. I wore that alot in my teens as well as body sprays in bottles shaped like fruit. I had a green apple one that in hindsight smelled awful! Getting away from perfumes and soaps, in 1995 I was diagnosed with GERD and IBS. I was on prescription Prilosec for months but the side effects were terrible and my doctor took me off of it. I took an otc then that has been discontinued, and oh how I miss it. My 23 yr old son also has gerd\ibs, and I would love for him to try it. It was called Mylanta GelCaps. They still make a Tums like Mylanta gas chewable but it isn't even close. Funny that when Prilosec went from prescription to OTC, the Mylanta GelCaps disappeared.
  11. I'm fairly certain that Jackie was only in the bottom once which was the non elimination episode. Katrina was in the bottom at least 3 times but not as many times as Kaitlyn. Judging by that last tsunami cake only, Jackie was the correct winner imo although I liked all 3 of them. I agree with whomever said this seasons bakers didn't seem as qualified or talented as previous season bakers like Andy, Adam or Jean Francis. I liked Gesine as a judge so much better than Marcella. I've always liked Carla too, but I have serious doubts about Jason's judging qualifications and his "good old' boy" shtick drives me crazy. The old format was better too- Giving all the bakers a chance to make 2 different bakes before elimination.
  12. The Crown Princess is holding up future Norwegian King Harald not Olav. I loved Home for Christmas--a Norwegian comedy on Netflix. There are currently 2 seasons.
  13. My husband and I really enjoyed this first episode. Being a royalty fan, I'm familiar with the Norwegian Royals and was amazed for the most part at how much the cast resembles their real life counterparts especially King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav. Never been a fan of Kyle Maclachlan but he seems to be capturing FDR pretty well. The real delight is Harriet Sansom Harris as Eleanor Roosevelt. I remember her well as Frasier's agent Bebe and thought she was hilarious. Stage actors often bring so much more to a character than film actors. My only quibble was that all the parents from Olav and Martha to Nicolai their servant and his wife looked too old to be parents to young children. The real Crown Prince Olav was in his twenties when his daughters were born and early thirties when Prince Harald (now King Harald) was born. These actors could almost pass as the children's grandparents rather than parents. Looking forward to the next episode though and more of FDR and Eleanor.
  14. Iowa is insulted! As someone from an Indiana suburb of Chicago, who is sometimes when in the city asked if I’m from a farm as if Indiana is nothing but farms, this is horribly insulting to anyone from the Midwest! God knows Iowa has a couple of big cities. It’s also insulting to anyone over the age of 50 as said above-this idea that they don’t know anything about social media or the Internet or have smart phones or Google. Dear God, how did Kyra sign off on this awful show? I thought the pilot was bad, but I like Sherri Shepherd I like Kyra Sedgwick so I thought I’d give it another try. But it’s so bad, I’m out.
  15. Freddie Stroma is Prince Frederich. He played Cormac McLaggen in Harry Potter, and was the first actor to play Sam Tarly's brother in GOT (which was later recast due to Stroma being committed to another project) and Adam in Unreal season 1 and 2 where he met and married in real life Johanna Braddy, the bachelorette who "wins" in season 1.
  16. You aren't the only one watching! I'm enjoying this despite always figuring out things out early on. For example I knew right away that the agency was "testing" Alex with that kidnapping. Looking forward to the next episode.
  17. I use coffee in chocolate brownies and other baked goods because i love the taste of it, so I believe you. As for Hershey's and Smores, you are so correct. Back in September, hubby And our young grandkids tried to make smores in our backyard fire pit. The only chocolate I had on hand was Aldi brand dark. I didn't melt well and grandkids wouldn't eat it as it tasted "icky"!
  18. What? If a coffee lover told you it doesn't have any taste, that person isn't a true coffee lover or else drinks really bad coffee! Did you mean when coffee is added to chocolate, it doesn't have any taste? Then why would anyone add it? Of course it has a taste! I for one love coffee and lots of frosting and hate the snobbery about Hersheys and Wal-Mart. Not everyone on this forum is a NY or California dweller with a Trader Joes down the block. There's a whole lot of America in between the east and west coasts that live in small towns, shop at Wal-Mart and love Hershey's. There's not a thing wrong with that! Linda should have been star baker imo!
  19. I didn’t notice Lottie using vocal fry, but even if she did it could be for a variety of reasons. This is a controversial issue these days. It is most certainly NOT because of the Kardashians as vocal fry has existed for a long time and is used by men as well. Also no one watches the Kardashians anymore. Their 15 minutes was used up a long time ago. As a vocal performance teacher for many years, I can assure you that it is used for a variety of reasons including damage to the larynx and for dramatic effect while singing. Back to the show, my early favs are Lottie and Peter.
  20. I liked this show, so I'm sad! It started out pretty rough but was improving as they dropped having so much focus on Mike and Rio and her mom to being an ensemble show about the quirky residents of a small rural town. Parks and Rec improved so much after losing all the focus on Leslie and becoming an ensemble comedy. I saw potential for this show to do the same. It's not as laugh out loud funny as Parks, but it still brought a smile to my face. God knows we need all the feel good shows we can get right now. Maybe another network will pick up this or Schooled? I can hope!
  21. Big plot hole-- why did Anna Kat have school when the other kids didnt? Did I miss an explanation like Tripp, Oliver, Franklin and Oliver's friend (sorry blanking on his name) were excused from school for the reenactment? I couldn't for the life of me figure out a timeline for this episode!
  22. Actually the stylist judge, Elizabeth Stewart, said that about a different dress in Minju's collection. It was the one that was silvery white, had sleeves and billowed out from right under the bust. I liked the pink crop jacket too and the long blue satin coat. I liked Daniel's collection, but the judges seemed to love Minju from the beginning. Once I saw the final 3, I knew for sure Minju would win. The only other designer they seemed to love as much as Minju was Angel. Avant Garde always seems to beat out wearability. The only exception I can think of was "Fashion Star" with Nicole Ritchie and Jessica Simpson. If I recall correctly, the premise of that show was to get viewers to "buy" the clothes so that viewers had a say in the winning design/designer. I hope there is a season 2. I'm watching Project Runway season 18 as it's being aired, and there isn't a contestant on that season with anywhere near the talent of this group. Like others here, though, I hated the team format. It seemed so unfair that some teams knew each other and had even worked together before, and some teams were just randomly put together. I would have liked to see more from the Scottish lady and the military guy from Brooklyn individually. I thought they both had talent, and that they sent them home too early while giving Kiki and her partner too many chances.
  23. Um, looking for a MOB dress currently, and a major rule of MOB dressing is no black and no white. Also no way should a MOB dress should show that much cleavage. Actually based on what I've been seeing while shopping, Brittany's dress looks nothing like most MOB dresses. Unfortunately for me, most of the ones I'm seeing look like something my 85 year old mother would wear with their long Dorothy from the Golden Girls jackets! But, I digress! I continue to be astounded by the hatred on this thread for Brittany. She has done some really good designs, and she hasn't talked negatively about other designers any more than several others but perhaps the editing makes it look that way. That said, hers wasn't my favorite. Nancy won and should have won this one, but I certainly don't think Brittany's was bad enough for auffing. If anything, as much as I like Geoffrey, his outfit was cheap looking (wow, I actually agree with Elaine!). All in all, since the clients were all so happy with their dresses, I think not sending anyone home was the right call. I still remain unimpressed with any of these designers. The talent level seems so much lower than last season. I liked Dayoung's designs the best out of this lot so it's too bad she had to leave.
  24. As a private music teacher, there is no way I believe that Taylor would get into a prestigious music program like Carnegie Mellon. You have to be outstandingly talented with a serious musical background and training/experience plus have a killer audition to get into music program like theirs. Patrick Wilson graduated from Carnegie Mellon and while he was a drama major, he also did musicals and had serious musical theater experience and training in high school. Josh Groban also attended Carnegie Mellon as a music major before he dropped out due to being offered a recording contract. Groban attended a performing arts high school, studied privately and even attended the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan before being accepted into Carnegie Mellon. No offence to the actress playing Taylor, but pretty girls with decent pop singing voices are a dime a dozen. I work with a dozen right now as good as Taylor is! Nor has the show ever shown Taylor having the experience and training that would be needed for acceptance to a program like theirs. Of course, we know she didn't have the grades or SAT scores she would need. As to not being able to afford it--financial aid is available! Like someone said upthread, Greg is supposed to be a college professor and it's as if he's never heard of filing a FAFSA. I have written similar comments before about other sitcoms who love to persist in this idea that financial aid and student loans don't exist! It's frustrating that the shows' writers don't do some minimal research before creating these storylines.
  25. Loved this episode! Chloe Brown Mueller! I'm not sure Katie will set up an official home business, maybe just sell specific foods made to order to those who know her. My mom made wedding and birthday cakes for friends and friends of friends without going thru the red tape of setting up a home business when I was a child, and my neighbor makes and sells fancy cupcakes for parties from her home to fellow moms in the neighborhood, but doesn't have an "official" business. Of course I imagine legal issues may arise depending on state laws. As for there being only a few comments, based on what I've read here for the first few episodes of this season, the majority of commenters are just here to criticize and complain about the show. I still enjoy it, some episodes more than others, but it's a sitcom, so it's not written to be super realistic. Granted I occasional will have a complaint or two when they really stretch believability, but I always try to find something positive about an episode or I wouldn't keep watching it (see Single Parents or Perfect harmony). I also enjoy Timothy Omundson. Did he have a stroke in real life? Off to google him!
