Oh that quote sounds like something I would have said "once upon a time"! I will definitely watch that before bed tonight--thank you for sharing that! For those who are saying for television purposes if they showed Sidney going to parish meetings and counseling, there wouldn't be much of a show, I sort of agree. But, then again, why have the character be a vicar at all if they aren't going to make what he does for a living a part of the story. Sidney's struggles with women, alcohol, Amanda, PTSD and his love for solving mysteries seem to indicate to me that he's a man who perhaps isn't in the right field of work. He just doesn't seem like the selfless type, but perhaps that is because the show doesn't give us the chance to see him doing his real job as a vicar very often. I wish they would show more of Sidney being a vicar and interacting with his parishioners.

Jess is dangerous! Not sure I would go so far as to say that. Jess shouldn't have ignored the restraining order, but I think Sam overreacted a bit by getting a restraining order in the first place. Jess showed up at his house twice with baked goods. He told her the second time she did so, to go away and not come back. Unless the show skipped showing/telling us that she had continued to harass him after that, then he should have given her a chance to comply with his request to leave him alone. I am glad to have Jess back! The only thing good about Zooey's pregnancy leave was that it gave Winston, in particular, more opportunity to shine. He is my favorite character on this show. It may take awhile to integrate Jess back into the story line. It's probably a mistake to go to Sam as a way to do that, and I thought the whole "Jess in the back of his truck" thing strained credibility. He walked right past the back of his truck to get in it and leave the hospital--how could he not notice Jess in her brightly colored clothes lying right there! If I want slapstick unrealistic comedy, I can watch old reruns of "I Love Lucy". Today we expect more realistic comedic situations. Loved Busy Phillips character and the whole bar plot. I never liked how they started making Nick into a total idiot. He's always been unfocused and somewhat immature, but he always seemed intelligent. It's good idea to try to push his character to grow, mature and achieve success especially as I get the feeling that Nick/Jess are endgame for the show.

Two for one measly salary is correct! Former pastor's wife here, and piano/vocal music teacher. For my husband's meager salary, not only was he supposed to work a 50-60 hour week, but I was supposed to direct a childrens' choir, lead worship services, and attend every single function the church held all while trying to raise our three young children. My hubby left the ministry in part because we were practically having to live on assistance to get by, and partly to save our marriage. Our faith is still strong, but the tremendous strain on our marriage and children just wasn't worth it especially when there is little gratitude shown by the congregation, and yes, lots of grumbling about me "missing" a function due to a sick child or whatever. These were smallish churches where we served, so perhaps larger more affluent churches may have a different attitude, but somehow I doubt it. Back to Grantchester, Amanda is definitely not suited for the life of a vicar's wife, and neither is Margaret IMO. Hildegarde was probably the best suited for that role. However, like many others here, I'm not sure Sidney is suited for the life of a vicar either. Not that a vicar/pastor has to be perfect, but Sidney just seems too easily swayed by the distractions around him be it women, the murder of the week, or alcohol. Being a vicar/pastor and vicar/pastor's wife means living frugally and always putting others and their needs before your own or your family's own needs. Its definitely a tough life.

Funny you should say that after this episode, as I was thinking after watching that they are finally moving away from the "Dean is always right and Stew is always wrong" idea that was so prevalent in the first half of the season. Also, Dean Sr. always blatantly favoring Dean Jr. and slighting Stew. I feel that this show is finally finding its way and moving on from the premise. I like that while someone in the focus group was correct that Dean Sr was hiding something, it caused Dean Jr. to reevaluate his reliance on focus groups and that it did skewer the idea that television in general relies too much on ratings and focus groups. I don't follow ratings at all but I am guessing that the ratings for this show are not good based on how few comments there are in this thread which is a shame. The cast of this show is awesome, and I am truly enjoying Fred Savage's return to being in front of the camera instead of behind it. I also loved the little bit about Deb wanting a focus group formed by her family then deciding she didn't want to hear it after all. Good grief that was true to life! I certainly wouldn't want to sit down my husband and kids and ask them what they thought about me!

First time post in this thread, I think, but I had to pop in and add that I'm so glad that Jess is back. I absolutely hated the episodes with Megan Fox. Not only do I dislike her in anything, but I hated how they had Nick drooling over her and acting like a fool while Fox played the same old character she always plays. I also appreciate that TPTB have recognized that this show has evolved into a true ensemble cast despite of its original focus being on the Jess character. Without Zooey Deschanel the cast chemistry was just "off"! Winston and his partner, Aly, are so great together. I would watch a spin off show of them and their "cop" adventures. Also, showing that Nick actually is good at his job was a plus in this episode as well. And finally, Peter Gallagher is always welcome on my screen!

Haha! I rarely post in the PLL threads but I was perusing the episode thread to see if anyone mentioned this very thing. Is Sara faking the hand problem? Perhaps her hands weren't really that damaged? How else could she possibly climb down that later? Unless she doesn't climb down but her accomplice climbs up the ladder to Sara's room to plan their dastardly deeds. Also, perhaps I missed seeing anyone else mention it, but why would Byron and Ella have to sneak around and hide their relationship? Lots of couples get divorced and then a few years later end up back together. Mike is away at college (and the "he never seems to be in his dorm room" seemed like an odd thing to mention), and Aria is supposedly home for a temporary amount of time, so why sneak around?

Sara2009--I stand corrected. Aaron wasn't nominated for a Tony for catch me if you can, it was a critics circle award. Thank you for letting me know. As for the Luke Perry thing, since I didn't watch 90210 I didn't understand the reference. I do think this was a very ambitious production and i do wonder of the scale of the production the rain and possibly the death of Vanessa's dad could have all had an impact on energy levels. Having done musical theater myself a long time ago, I do know there are many factors that can affect a performance. Good to know that Fox is doing more musicals although I never liked Rocky Horror Picture Show.
-
I said this in the "Live" comments section--but yes other than trying to copy the clothes and some of the songs that were only in the movie, this production was pretty true to the stage version. The stage version doesn't really allow for much "acting" or character development. It just races from song to song. In that respect, I prefer the movie. Granted I am a huge Aaron Tveit fan, but yes, he looked a little too old for the part of Danny. But, he is a better singer than Travolta and is a darn fine dancer. I can see comparing Tveit and Travolta, but I don't get the Luke Perry stuff--hated 90201 and to my knowledge Luke Perry doesn't sing and dance and was never nominated for a Tony. I'm surprised by the negativity here about this show. I didn't watch "The Sound of Music" because Carrie Underwood as Maria absolutely killed me and I just couldn't bring myself to watch. The Wiz was pretty good and fairly well casted. They tried doing this with a live audience and maybe the grinning mugging audience was too much?! I don't know. It didn't bother me. I am just hoping that Fox will try their hand at another musical.

I want to add that I am with those who really like Hannah as a host! She is articulate, knowledgeable about fashion, and compassionate in dealing with teenagers. She reminds me of a more "model-ly" version of Jennifer Lawrence. I get tired of Heidi's short tight sexy boob comments too.

Menswear and military-esque jackets and cargos are hardly new in fashion. Seth Aaron did a great deal of that in his winning collection during his season only he did it much better. Check out ASOS and look at their young womens' jackets and you will see tons of what Samantha is doing. I was also getting irritated with her attitude and how she had so little finished when she lives right there and didn't have to travel as the other three did! That said, add me to the list of those disappointed with Peytie's collection. It seemed all over the place, not Bohemian but just plain awful. I thought Maya and Zachary's looked the best overall, but I think all of them have tons to do before the finale.
-
Stopping by to say that I originally was wanting Maya for the win as she is so talented for just having turned 14. I was going to post that I would put Peytie in 2nd place, then Zachary in 3rd, and Samantha in 4th (not a fan of her menswear inspired clothes as there's nothing new there!). However, I went back and looked at all their designs, and have to admit, Peytie's are the ones I like the best. She has shown us so many different looks and yet they each say "Peytie" very clearly. I also was going to comment on the poster who said Peytie dressed too sexy, but now I can't find that post! I think she dresses very California! I have loved so many of the outfits she has worn. I assume she designs her own outfits. I work in a mid sized high school in the Midwest. Lots of teenaged girls in my school dress too sexy. I think Peytie looks great the way she dresses.

Loved this episode despite never having heard of or ever watched Double Dare! Prior to this episode, I was seriously thinking of not watching this show any more as much as I used to love it. This season so far seemed to be way more focused on Beverly being a "Smother". It was veering into the same formula week after week of Beverly does something awful that embarrasses her family all in the name of "loving" them so much. This episode reminded me of the first season that made me so much of a fan that I convinced my friends and family to watch the show. It had Adam and Pops together (always my favorite pairing), Coach, Muscles Mersky, Dave Kim, and just the right amount of Murray, Barry, and Erica. Beverly was still a big part of the plot, but this time it was more about her wanting to understand and like something Murray loved. Even though I never saw "Double Dare", I still thought it was great that they included Handsome Ben and Other Amy as the casting crew from the show. My favorite line was when the short friend of Barry's said when asked why he didn't tackle Beverly, "I didn't know where to touch her"!

Yeah, the Christmas Story stuff bugged as I grew up in Hammond (the movie's Hohman) Indiana and went to Warren G. Harding Elementary school. Jean Shepard, author of the book the film is based on, was a bit of a local celebrity. It was a little known film outside of our area though in the 80's. After reading a local article about the film, we rented it on VHS and watched it for the first time Christmas of 1990. I don't think the movie became a Christmas classic or must watch until the mid 90's. The payoff of Barry and Adam and the pole was certainly worth the fudging of the dates though. Loved the blue Santa suit on Pops though--Hanukkah Harry or whatever he called himself was great!

Lol! Today is my day off and instead of being productive (although I am doing some online Xmas shopping), I am being sidetracked by googling fashion images. When I googled Twiggy Peter Pan collar, I came up with several images of Mia Farrow in her Rosemary's Baby clothing. The Peter Pan collar dress was very popular in the 60's. I confess I had a couple of those dresses when I was a little girl in late 60's and early 70's. Of course, I also googled Katherine Hepburn's 1930s/40s gowns and even Grace Kelly and Jackie O fashions. I need to get some work done before bed ha!
-
Not sure what you mean about nitpicking as it seems as if you are agreeing with me. Although Tim was wrong about Twiggy never being seen in a Peter Pan collar. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8pw5ZUnErTI/UE6XxkREStI/AAAAAAAAAvU/cBO1fII0Nog/s1600/Twiggy9079&9077.jpg I meant that I think he was correct about telling Maya she should change up the collar to make it less vintage 60's and put a more modern twist on it which is exactly what she did. I think she is very talented!
-
My favorite outfit was Zachary's cigarette pants and the inventive belted jacket in beige. I was surprised he wasn't singled out more during judging, but perhaps because he had immunity, they wanted to focus more on Zach and Bridget's designs. I liked both of them, but I felt that neither of their looks had a "modern twist" to them with the possible exception of Zach's low cut front on the jacket. When the judges mentioned Katherine Hepburn, I knew immediately that they were probably thinking of her gowns in Philadelphia Story (1940). In particular this one: http://theglamoroushousewife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/katharine-hepburn-style-2.jpg. Or even this one from "Bringing Up Baby" (1938) http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/pintucks/bringingupbaby-1.jpg. IMO, these looks are more synonymous with the late 30's than the 40's. For those who are saying that peter pan collars were all the rage in the 1960's, I think that was Tim's point. The designers were supposed to put a modern twist on their decades' design. With the peter pan collar, Maya's dress could have come straight from a vintage store. Add me to the list who think that they are keeping Matt around for his flamboyant personality. The judges even said that he hasn't designed anything they have really liked. Also, I agree with whomever said that his head scarf was much more Grace Kelly in the 50's than it was Jackie O in the 60's. Jackie O is more affiliated with the pillbox hat, IMO.

The clue (I think) referred to that is on IMDB is in the episode description for the next episode. I personally don't think this "clue" means a whole lot with this show! Although I was gonna bail on this show as its gotten so overly silly, but this episode was very fun. The Radwells were a hoot--perfect casting!

S01.E02: An Unconventional Carwash!
lark37 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Project Runway: Junior [V]
Question--Did Ysabel say "Matt is wearing his Louis Vuitton's or his Louboutin's?" Not that it matters but the reviewer says she said Louis Vuitton and I could have sworn she said "Louboutin's". I assumed she was talking about Matt's shoes, and although Vuitton does make mens' footwear, I associate shoes more with Louboutin. Agree with most of you, this show has much more talented designers than the last adult season of PR! I like Maya (only 13!) as well as Peytie, Samantha, and Jesse. Tim is less cranky and more helpful too--although once again this episode, his suit jacket looked way too small for him! -
Personally, I don't think Carrie Underwood is more talented than other American Idol winners! As a music teacher, I found those first 4 or 5 seasons of AI to be full of talented individuals and Taylor Hicks is a talented musician as well. I personally hate country music and prefer Taylor's jazz/blues style to Carrie's country singing. She is certainly more successful than Taylor because whether I like it or not, country music is the most popular type of music in America. End rant! I said last week and I will repeat it again, if it took Edmond so many years of auditioning to make it on to this show, what does that say about the talent level this season that he looks like the obvious winner at this point? Merline is not a good seamstress, but at least she tries to create new and interesting shapes and looks. Kelly winning this week was a joke IMO. It's not a make over for someone if you make them the same thing they were already wearing in a different material and color. They need to end this show after this season as they are doing with American Idol. Not even Nina, Tim or Heidi seem to enjoy doing anymore as they are all getting so mean spirited and grumpy. I love the show Unreal, and I thought that Shiri and Constance's comments were on point and not "mean". That was a terrible runway show, and they were probably looking forward to judging and were so disappointed. I also agree that it wasn't a coincidence that they used the two main characters in a Lifetime show about the "unreality" of "reality" television to judge this season where producer manipulation is so heavy handed. Ashley and Candice both need to go home next as they both are clearly unable to design anything different or suitable for a client that isn't a size 0. I've not been a fan of Ashley since the first couple of weeks as she seemed to be unable to make anything but crop tops and circle skirts with pockets. This week she finally made something a little different, and wow was it bad! I hope Edmond or Merline wins the whole thing and then the show just goes away for a few years.

Parent of a cheerleader here--and guess who paid for the decorations? Except in our high school its not the lockers of the football/basketball players that get decorated but their houses! And yes, daughter was assigned a football player during football season and a basketball player during basketball season. This is definitely a tradition that needs to go (and homecoming or prom queen). Its a very sexist tradition. I still have trouble with the idea that Manny plays football though or even that he is in high school. The actor looks so immature and nonathletic, but I supposed if we're supposed to believe that Axel on The Middle has a football scholarship for college, then why not have Manny play football too? These sitcoms definitely require a suspension of belief!

Do male peacocks sit near the nests to guard them or something? I don't know much about peacocks admittedly, but I did wonder why Nadiya would have a nest of eggs next to a male peacock as I do know that only male peacocks have the tail plumage. I love Nadiya, but I have to agree that her show stopper didn't show much in the way of chocolate work and that Tamal should probably have been awarded Star Baker this week. I really think Nadiya has this in the bag though!

I always assume (maybe I'm wrong) that a hair stylist does his/her own hair, and if I don't like it, then I won't like how they do mine. Looking at the Just Fab website, it looks as if they removed most of the ruching down the body of Edmond's dress which IMO made it look a little less cheap. The Just Fab version looks like a dress from Forever 21's clearance rack.
-
Wow, I could have written this comment. I've been feeling like the judges have been consistently over praising Ashley. She keeps doing the same things over and over. The jacket was cute, but you can already buy a jacket like that at Delias. Circle skirts are very easy to make--I'm not a great seamstress by any means, but I have made many a circle skirt. Teen fashion websites have been showing circle skirts (very short ones they call skater skirts) and cropped tops for the past 5 years. This season is seriously short on talent. If Edmond has tried out for this show so many times previously and not made it, but has won so many times now and is shaping up to be a final 3 contestant, what does that say about the talent this season or lack thereof? The only one left who seems to have a bit of talent (not so much as a sewer but as a thinker outside of the box) is Merline, but it looks like she will be next to go or maybe Kelly? As for Kelly, I have this motto when it comes to getting my hair cut and styled--if I don't like how the stylist is wearing his/her own hair, I won't let them do mine. Based on Kelly's personal look and what she keeps sending down the runway (with the exception of the second unconventional challenge dress), I would never consider wearing anything she's designed. This has been a very disappointing season.

S07.E02: The Day Alex Left for College
lark37 replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Modern Family [V]
Hmm...Lots of adults over 55 hate soccer especially when its little kids playing it and don't consider it a "real" sport probably because its not a traditional American sport. Sadly, I didn't laugh once during this episode. This show needs to end as its veering into "Friends" territory--past its prime and no longer a bit funny. I used to love this show so much, now its just trying too hard all the time, and they have the characters acting out of character. When have the Dunphy's ever been so invested in Alex? It always seemed to me that she was the one that never got much attention. And I totally agree that Gloria should have assimilated into California (American) life by now. The whole heavy Columbian accent and "back in Columbia" schtick is just grating at this point. I think I'm officially done with this show. I'll just watch the reruns from back when it was actually funny. -
Markie Post's hairstyle was almost as famous in the 80's as the "Rachel" was in the 90's! Oh, I had the parted down the middle with the sausage roll curls down each side in the early 80's as did most of my female friends, but mine wasn't a mullet. I think maybe Kristy McNicol had something similar to a feathered mullet during her "Family" days http://www.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/2012010/300.mcnichols.ls.11012.jpg Maybe this is what you mean. Like you, I have yearbooks full of those hairstyles on the boys and the girls. I love your comment about protecting the guilty!
