Well, 12crazycat, you sure opened my eyes to something I didn't know! I just did some research and found that there are claims that Elvis "stole" the black sound and style. In my opinion and as many of the articles I found pointed out, it is a invalid accusation, though, because he certainly wasn't the first to use elements of jazz and R & B in his musical style. However, he was the most successful one to do so back in the late 50s, so I guess it was easy to pin it all on him. By the time The Beatles and The Rolling Stones came along, it was commonplace for elements of R & B and jazz to be used in rock. John Lennon stated that he was heavily influenced by jazz and blues. I didn't enjoy episode 1 at all, but at least I learned something new. Thanks for your explanation!

Ugh, the southern accents in the first 2 episodes are terrible! Why do Brits always do that long drawn out drawl when they try to sound southern (Vivian Leigh in Gone with the Wind)? Don't like the new guy Will much, tired of the Leonard is secretly gay storyline, Geordie is still an ass to his wife most of the time, Mrs. M or C now I guess is still kinda snippy and fun, but overall this show hasn't held up over the seasons the way Endeavor has or even Call the Midwife. I'm not sure I will finish this season. Oh and for the record, Elvis didn't write his own songs, nor did he try to claim that he did except for a co-writing credit on a couple for royalty purposes. I'm not sure what that line of Violet's about knowing musicians Elvis plagiarized was about or why it was included. It was just odd!

I actually didn't like Christian much during his season, but find him to be so much more of a true mentor than the Tim of later seasons. Christian actually gives the designers helpful feedback and even a suggestion here and there. Seems to me that for whatever reason, the editing of this season has been designed to make Tessa the "bad guy". I have believed throughout this season that they ask every designer in the "talking heads" what they think of other designer's work, but they are choosing to mostly show Tessa's comments. And to be fair, Tessa certainly wasn't the only designer saying inappropriate things and acting like a junior high schooler around the male models. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I like Tessa's designs for the most part. Yes, she needs to hem things (which I'm sure she knows how to do, since that's a pretty basic sewing skill), but other than a few designs, I've liked most of what she has designed including this challenge. Add me to the group that thinks Bishme should have won this challenge. His outfit screamed Elton John, whereas Garo's looked like an Elvis jumpsuit with boots and a big collar.

Thought this episode was shown out of order. It's spring and no mention of Easter or spring break and football in the spring?! Grandma was sleeveless, Taylor and Greg in sweaters and Anna Kat and friends complaining it was cold outside. Also Greg's assistant hasn't been mentioned since last fall nor Gina or grandma. Taylor is with Trip but it could have been filmed back before their brief split. Enjoyed the episode but I did wonder. Spring is track and golf and baseball in most high schools. Football is late summer/Fall. So it did take me out of the episode a bit. But I strongly 2nd the poster who pointed out how well Gregory Harrison has aged!

To be fair, do we know that none of Katie's friends come from money? I don't think that has ever come up which is an issue that has bothered me from season one. How did Katie become friends with Doris and Angela? Did they go to college together? The original premise was a working class housewife in a rich suburb where she struggles to fit in, so maybe I missed the explanation of why Doris and Angela, who are wealthy, are so tight with Katie. Anyway, I still love this show but agree that it's getting stale. Hope they can fix it.

My dad was a WWII vet and didn't have his first child until 1955. He lied about his age (which was fairly common then) and joined up in fall of 43 when he was 16. After being stationed in Germany til 47, he came back to the states and got a job. He met my mom (9 years younger than him), in 1954 I was born 3 of 4 in 1962. It's highly possible that Mike was in the war from ages 18-22 or so, came back to usa, worked for a few years and met Peggy in 1950. Then had first child in 52. If Mike was 18 in 1943 a little older than my dad, he still would have been late 20s when oldest was born. Not implausible at all.

See I think Grant was the voice of reason during the judging. The other chef/judges were getting too hung up on who took the biggest risk rather than who made the best dish. Grant reminded them that it was about delivering a great plate. Darren, Tim’s Canadian chef partner, was outspoken and a bit of a drama king throughout the whole competition. He was also one of the most inexperienced chefs in the competition. Looking back at the earlier episodes , it seems clear that it was quiet Tim who was the consistent chef who was keeping them in the competition. They were only in the bottom a couple of times and were top team several times. While I really liked the Australian chefs and loved Aaron and Graham, I was happy with Tim as the winner. I would also like to see a second season! I live in Chicago suburbs, and although I was aware of Alinea, I never wanted to eat there. Now I want to try the edible helium balloons. If I only had an extra $300 for one meal!

I’m watching Land Girls on Netflix right now and in it Brassington plays a unscrupulous American GI. Personally, I don’t think he’s much of a cutie—albeit he is a bit thinner in that show. He may be a sweetheart in real life though no way of knowing that. He does seem to play slimy very well As for this season, so far I am bored bored bored. It’s the same old thing every season now. Infidelity on either Ross or Demelza’s part, a mining disaster or shipwreck, a dying baby or child, the odious vicar is awful to his wife, George and Ross are enemies, etc. If they don’t shake it up with something new, I’m out. It’s starting to feel like an 18th century soap opera! Oh wait I forgot Ross has to be self righteous about something too. In my opinion, Aiden Turner’s good looks aren’t enough to sustain a show that like Downton Abbey did keeps repeating the same story lines.

Pretty sure they were seniors last year, so not in high school i don't think. They haven't shown them there. The guy with the Celica, whose name I can never remember, didn't he get his rat tail caught in a door and cut off in the last episode? It sure grew back fast! They used to have ones you could clip in. Maybe he got one of those!

Enjoyed it and glad to have it back, but agree that the new Mandy seemed to be trying too hard to be like the old Mandy especially the hair flip. And it just didn't work! Molly Ephraim truly made Mandy her own, ditsy but with a good heart. This new actress has big shoes to fill, but I'm gonna give her a chance. I loved the original Kristen, but I've gotten used to the new one although I still think the first one was way better and fit better with the other sisters. Don't get me started on the original Ryan (Nick Jonas). As far as the politics, this has always been a political show going back to the first couple seasons. Tim Allen makes no apologies for being a conservative. As one myself, it is great to get a conservative viewpoint since everything else in the media is so left leaning. Like someone said up thread, however, I think some of the "jokes" that were deemed as political were designed as "digs" to ABC for cancelling it. There was quite an uproar over it being cancelled because of its right wing politics and its parent company, Disney supposedly not liking that. I'm sure some of that type of stuff will be toned down once it settles into it's new home on FOX.

Sorry theatre mouse the part about the acting seeming forced was in response to other posters who called it forced. Unfortunately my tablet wasn't letting me quote more than one post.

It was Oliver who went with Greg to get the pig for the barbeque in the episode where they brought Hans Gruber home because they couldn't kill him. I don't think its fair to say Oliver didn't care about Hans. As for the actor sounding fake or forced when crying, I think the sound editing was partly to blame. It seemed as if they were afraid we couldn't hear his crying into Katie's shoulder so they amped up the sound to an unnatural level. I still think DiMaggio is doing a fine acting job as Oliver especially compared to the child actors on some of the other sitcoms.

Laughed and cried with this episode. I've been posting since season one that Oliver (dimaggio) is an impressive young actor because of his comedic timing, but this episode showed his dramatic chops as well. Actually all three Otto children are good actors. Goodbye George H and Hans Gruber, I will miss both of you!

ABC will probably not save Kevin unfortunately. Kevin Saves the World is definitely my "feel good" show, and it seems to me that the world could use more feel good shows. This is Us just tries too hard I think. ABC also cancelled prematurely, IMO, another feel good favorite of mine, Eli Stone. My most recent favorite feel good show, Hart of Dixie, probably only lasted a few seasons because it wasn't on one of the big four networks. My hope for "Kevin" is that a network like the CW picks it up for another season. This season ending episode was fine as a season finale, but it definitely doesn't work as a series finale--too many loose ends! Fingers crossed that someone picks it up for a least a half season. PS I wanted Reese to be the one to find out the truth rather than Amy!

Say Yes: Wedding SOS - General Discussion
lark37 replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Say Yes: Wedding SOS
Enjoying this show but as a natural blonde, I find it strange and sorta offensive every time George says "your hair is too many different shades of blonde" or "it's too streaky". Um news flash George, the all over platinum is not only super hard to maintain but also so "fake" and a dead giveaway that its not natural. Real blonde hair is lots of different shades; well unless you are under age 8. Personally, I thought the apt fire bride looked much better with more natural hair. I would have maybe added some highlights and conditioned it. That yellow all over blonde wasn't so great on her IMO. As for the LASIK, I have to admit if someone offered to pay for me to have it done, I would let them do it too. Its an expensive surgery that most insurance company's won't cover. -
Thanks for the premiere date Small Potatoes! I watched the pilot over the weekend, and enjoyed it quite a bit which surprised me, because I never got into Gilmore Girls. I knew Rachel Brosnahan from Manhattan and was impressed by her in that. I also love period pieces and Tony Shaloub, so I gave this a try expecting to be bored. I was pleasantly surprised, but I agree with the idea that a plot that consists of following a female comedians life isn't much to sustain a series. The writing will have to be as good as the acting to keep this going!

John Krasinski was excellent in 13 Hours. I think he will be terrific as Jack Ryan much better casting than Ben Affleck or Chris Pine. Personally, I'm looking forward to this reboot!

Joanna Garcia Swisher has been in several TV series (Privileged, Better with you, Animal Practice, Once Upon a Time) since "Reba" and has had red hair since that show ended. The look alike conversation is amusing. If all actresses with long red hair look alike, better add Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard and even Julianne Moore to the mix. Amy Adams early in her career did a network sitcom, The Office. With her resume now, no way would she do another network series. As for this pilot, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I do like both Joanna and Jason, so that's why I tried it even though the premise sounded so outdated. I'm going to give it time to see where they are going with the aerospace engineer angle and the meteors. Show runners are smart enough to know that shows that are too simplistic like Touched by an Angel and Highway to Heaven aren't going to do well today. I'm sure they have plans for some sort of tie in with government keeping secrets and Swisher's characters job. I was never a big John Ritter fan as, like others have mentioned, I found his comedic style too broad and over the top, but he was quite good as a dramatic actor. Jason seems to be gifted in both comedy and drama.

Shopkins are already hugely popular in the US with the under 10 set especially girls. My granddaughters have shopkins toys, games, pillows, backpacks etc. I suspect the new Shopkins Live show was the reason behind the promotional push.

Sorry you are correct in that The Good Place is on Thursdays. I must have looked at the wrong Fall schedule. I can watch this show live yay!
-
Watched pilot on Hulu last night, and I really enjoyed it. Lead actor is good and I really enjoyed his two friends. I can't stand Lea Michelle but do like Yvette Nicole Brown. Lea's character was tolerable, so I will likely watch this on Hulu and watch the Good Place live.

Sorry, but I'm not following you here...what does Charlotte having a twin have to do with Mary not being AD because she is in police custody? And if they actually go so far as saying that the police let Mary go after confessing to two murders, they have really lost their minds. I supposed she could be out on bail, but that same evening? Doubtful! Again, though, I'm acting as if this show uses any type of real world logic. The last time I commented on PLL thread was when I (along with many others) questioned how Sarah Harvey could have climbed down that later at The Radley when she supposedly didn't have the use of her hands. Apparently, that was a logical question which will remain unanswered
-
Oh yes, I forgot about the Scooby Doo masks! Maybe Mary isn't really Mary but someone else wearing a mask. Of maybe Mary is really Jessica and isn't dead after all! This show gave up using any sort of logic a long time ago. I guess we will find out soon enough!
-
Coming out of "lurking" on the PLL threads to ask this: Since Mary Drake just confessed to killing Jessica & Rollins/Archer, wouldn't she be in police custody? If so, how was she in the hoodie and gloves driving the car with the liar "dolls" in the backseat? I hope it isn't Wren as he has been absent for too many seasons, and it seems like a cop out to bring him back to have him be AD. I would have bought it if he was "A" instead of CeCe, Charles, Charlotte, but not with his long absence from the show. Same reasoning with it being Melissa or Jason, they haven't been on the show for far too long to make it mean something. I like the theory that it's Alison and the "sweet" nice Ali has been an act all along, I would also be happy if it was Ezra since I can't stand him and his twisted relationship with Aria. But, this show makes so little sense, and Julian Morris' random appearance at the airport a couple of episodes back have convinced me it will indeed be Wren and that he is related to Rollins/Archer.

I'm glad the show was renewed as it is getting more and more difficult to find sitcoms that are family oriented without using the dreaded "laugh track". I'm assuming this was the season finale hence the bloopers at the end and dangling the "maybe" about having another baby in the last scene. I do find Katie a bit too annoying and mean in some of her antics. This episode, for example, she references Lucy in "I Love Lucy" and her cheese baby but as a life long fan of "I Love Lucy", I remember the episode well. Lucy was trying to smuggle the cheese out of Europe onto a plane. She didn't use the fake baby to get out of volunteering, much less allow anyone to go to the expense of throwing her a baby shower. They really need to rein the Katie character in a bit. As someone who lives in a upper class suburb but isn't upper class herself, I find the premise of being the "fish out of water" with the other uppity moms true to life. Why isn't that enough without Katie being over the top mean? Katie was just starting to fit in a bit, then she pulls something like that. The fish out of water premise should be enough. They have also been hammering the "Katie is selfish" idea into our heads, but this one just felt all kinds of wrong IMO. As I said, though, I enjoy the show--especially the son--that young actor has talent, so I'm going to continue to watch.
