S44.E18: Emma Stone / BTS

I've seen some fans who are wary about how some BTS fans (who are very, very, very passionate over BTS) may react at the taping, if they will mostly just be there for BTS and none of the sketches. (I imagine the show's social media accounts would probably be a shambles as well if something goes wrong)

Apparently the writers are also wary, if this is true. I wonder if that is why they asked Emma Stone back (although she may have something to promote - I don't keep up with her career). She's been on enough and is a strong enough person mentally to where a dead audience probably won't bother her.

I hadn't even considered that about BTS. I'm trying to remember the last time the show had a musical guest with a rabid enough fanbase who would sleep on 48th Street for tickets without actually being SNL fans. It's definitely happened sometime over the past few years but I'm blanking on when.

According to IMDb Emma doesn't have anything to promote right now (her next movie is Zombieland 2 and it doesn't come out until October). I suppose this could be a retroactive stint given her Oscar nomination for The Favourite and the fact that she's a reliable host.

They definitely are aware of the fanbase judging by this promo:

It kind of made me laugh when I saw the comments about how this makes their fans seem like fangirls, isn't inclusive of males, is making fun of them, etc. This is such a cheesy little thing compared to some of the completely feral material you would have gotten in past years (like Chris Farley in a wig and a skirt, spitting through fake braces). SNL really does not seem to be for their target audience at all. For their own sake they are probably better off just watching the musical performances and ignoring all the rest (which is probably what will happen anyway).

SNL has had boy bands from Backstreet Boys and N*Sync in the late 90s to the Jonas Brother in the late 2000s, to One Direction in the 2010s. They usually put them in one or two sketches to make the fans in the audience happy in between performances.

True. I just get the feeling the expectations are different. The promo caused some long thought piece at one site about how unfair and stereotypical this was to fans. I don't remember such a need for validation in most fan groups.

I did think they should put them in a few sketches but after the reaction to the promo I have a feeling it would go down like a lead balloon, so maybe they shouldn't.

After the number of comments I saw from BTS fans about how they were hoping to see them in sketches, I'm surprised at how many genuinely don't know this was a put-on and thought the guys were all just looking awkward and miserable while two women sobbed around them. People going on about how they need to protect them from...two women acting for 5 seconds, I guess?

I'm all for people calling out SNL for antiquated ideas - I've certainly done this many times myself, and many times this is the only way to make any change at the show - but the sheer amount of confusion at what SNL even is, and the idea that appearing on the show is a huge burden to BTS, that SNL is being unfair or mean to them and to their fans - it baffles me.

I'm sure the guys in BTS are perfectly fine people, and I'm sure many of their fans are too, but some of the stuff I've seen this week means I'm very unlikely to ever want to listen to any of their music. It seems to have nothing to do with music and is instead some kind of eternal righteous crusade to nowhere...or in this case, against a television show that is just asking them to stand on a stage and sing, not give up various organs.

The New York NBC affiliate reported this morning that BTS fans have been camping out for tickets since Monday. So I'd say the promo with the girls sitting on the stage and gabbing like they're at a sleepover is 100% fair game. People need to fucking relax.

I have no idea who or what BTS is.  Yeah I suppose I could Google it or whatever, but first I have to get these kids off my lawn.

Oh hey, maybe those were the kids who were on my lawn.  Cute.  But I guess you know you're old when your own kids are too old to clue you in on this stuff.  Sigh.  Wake me up when Paul Simon's back on, I guess.

I was in NYC and saw the line up going down the street on Thursday afternoon.  I had to appreciate the general organization and lack of garbage.  That said, I hope they are still respectful enough through the sketches especially if they show up in one.  I don't know much about them, but I think only one has a good grasp of English.  The rest only know a few words.

"Princess of Arizona". Thank you SNL for that gift!

"Ladies Room" is in my head now.

ETA: I've heard the song before but never seen the video. I was only a kid in the 80s so I was completely unaware a lot of batshit things like this video existed!

Cold Open: Already downplaying Mueller. Okay, it's about Aunt Becky in jail. I liked her bit. And I liked Pete as Michael Avenetti (and they cut to him quickly for some reason), and I wasn't expecting Michael Keaton as Julian Assange AT ALL but man it works. Apparently Melissa was someone named 6IX9INE? Don't know who that is, but okay.

Monologue: Emma Stone, of course, tests out how much of the audience is just here for BTS. A lot, apparently. But Emma is solid, and everyone loves her. I loved the half-assed Four Timers celebration. Honestly, we got lots of Kyle love in just these two sketches, probably more than in the past few episodes combined.

Posters: Apparently Emma's character showed up before. I knew this sketch seemed familiar. That voice is great, I couldn't stop laughing at it.

Fashion Coward: Oh my god this was amazing. Yeah, it's like, every clothing store (It's Just ann Taylor was the perfect button). "Far mirrors" "Pants for your legs," "ideal juror." So perfect.

The View: The View sketch is back! Apparently the last time we had one was when Emma hosted in 2010?! And Whoopi is NOT played by Kenan?! Oh boy, they're finally tackling Meghan McCain. But it seems like the sketch ended before they truly could? Boo. I liked it enough, but man, could've been better. Yes, Jenny McCarthy actually thought the Pineapple on the Masked Singer was Barack Obama.

Hobbies: Melissa gets a song! It was fun.

Ladies' Room: This was weird, and considering how weird this show's gotten lately, that's saying something. I did not want this to end, though. This was the best kind of stupid.

Also, I just found out that this song was real. Boy, does that put this sketch into context. Figured as much, this sketch written by the same person who wrote the Rain sketch for Donald Glover and that's when I learned about Oran "Juice" Jones.

BTS: This is what passes for boy bands these days? Not my thing, I guess.

WU: Yeah, everyone has Trump saying the opposite of whatever stupid shit he's lying about this week. Several times. Good to know that Trump jokes go over well for this audience. and yeah, this audience was rabid for BTS (and unsurprisingly not much for much else).

Prince Harry Baby Shower: Wow, wasn't expecting this sketch to come back. Aidy as James Corden was perfect, and I liked William dressed as Freddie Mercury. Beck as Charles bursting in with "WHAT HAPPENED, AM I KING?!" was far and away the best part of the whole night.

BTS 2: Okay, this song I can imagine why they have a big fanbase. I keep picturing Boyz 12 from American Dad.

The Actress: I was typing "this is about a porno, isn't it?" just as Emma brought up that she was the wife in a gay porn video. This was so good, and she was just as wooden in her delivery in these kinds of things.

Chalmers Reserve: Now this was a 5-to-1 sketch if there ever was one. Gotta love how the wine is made from hot dog water, and that it's brown. "We're going to hell for making this wine."

This was an okay episode. We all knew everything that wasn't BTS was just gonna be filler, but it was fun filler. We return May 4th with Adam Sandler. Still can't believe he hasn't hosted yet.

Wow, VCRTracking, that is nuts.

So are any of those BTS kids really singing? They have a backing track and none of the backups were singing. Crazy.

I loved the Fashion Coward store and The Actress.

Emma sounded like she dragged in a little Roseanne Rosannadanna into that wine lady at the end. Or maybe I just heard that because she mentioned Gilda Radner at the beginning.

I'm so glad a few of you also heard it. She's done a Roseanne impression before so I think she was just vibing that way again. It was also so sweet of her to mention Gilda.

I saw BTS on Jimmy Fallon and the band was perfectly capable of sitting through several segments with Jimmy.  Kim Nam Joon is apparently the "translator" of the group but the rest of the bandmates got along great with Jimmy and did a talk AND dance segment with him.  They've also been on Corden and other shows.  I'm not sure why it's such a big deal that BTS might not all speak perfect English.  Why would that be a requirement or a necessity for a musical guest?

The panicking over BTS's fanbase was so unjustified.  Good for SNL for actually picking a timely, current, and relevant musical guest that has more than one hit.  (This is obviously not directed at bands like Tame Impala, who have been around for ages and whom I dearly respect.)

Same question about BTS -- not really singing.

As an old lady BTS fan from California, I can assure you they are singing/rapping their main parts.  They do use a "guide" and backing track (some of which was Halsey on the first song), but their main parts they do sing live always.

As a fan, I can hear the differences in the parts and voice live.

The second song, Mic Drop, they sounded pretty winded compared to the recorded versions (there are like 3).  They also rarely sing the version with the English chorus, so I was really impressed that they were able to do that today.  They must have practiced a LOT as only one of them speaks English well.

They work really hard and are very good role models.  They are also all very talented and continue to work on their voice.  They also write a lot of their music/lyrics/rap.

I thought it was ok and generally got better as it went along. It doesn't really matter as Emma is such a pro at this. She was born to do the show.

Gotta be honest. Kate was a misfire for me as Lori Loughlin.  I actually thought Emma would be a better choice for that. She needed to be somewhat flirty and trying to sign autographs for everyone.  I was also embarrassed how dead silent it was when Michael Keaton was doing his lines and then I remembered ... BTS crowd.  Better writing would had helped, too.

Enjoyed the monologue. You can tell how much this is means to Emma. I was momentarily   excited that there was going to be more of a tribute to Gilda. But that's ok.

Wow, didn't expect the venom from Aidy for Meghan McCain.  That was the whole sketch for me. (I wish her Sarah Sanders had half the bite, but whatever.)  I thought Aidy had a great show in general.

It really got going for me with Update. Aidy, Mikey, and Heidi all brought the gusto to their characters. I laughed when Heidi named dropped Pete. I noticed tonight how similar the fights of that couple remind me of a couple I know who are both about 30. Scary. And sad.

Love your post.  Only one correction...and it's said with respect.  It's actually Kim Nam Joon (RM) who speaks English and acts as their translator.  But all them understand English to a certain extent and can speak words and phrases here and there.

They are actually hilarious and very personable, which is one reason their fan base is as rabid (but mostly very positive, respectful, and do a lot of good deeds - just like the band itself) as it is.

Oh yeah, The Actress was a masterclass. That showed how good Emma is and that's probably what will give Emma an Emmy nomination for guest actress.

I wasn't really focused on it, but from what I heard BTS was very generic boy band. Not bad per se, but not my thing. Again I'm waaay past that demographic, so it doesn't matter.

Most of my complaints about BTS fans this week ended up being more about the people online than those actually seeing the show. Watching live while looking at Twitter did nothing to change that view (my favorite was the American fan who said SNL was giving fans around the world a bad view of Americans - yeah, that's what's doing it!). The people in the crowd seemed perfectly fine. They laughed at some of those sketches more than I would have, especially the posters sketch.

I watched the first BTS performance. It was fine. Felt very cruise ship. I didn't see the second but I'm sure it was also fine.

A big part of the episode felt like an acknowledgment that lots of their female cast are in their last years as cast members. Melissa got much more focus than I'd expected. She even had her own rap bit. I still feel like she is somewhat generic outside of her impressions, but she still has time.

Kyle isn't much of a sketch actor, but seeing him tends to put a smile on my face. His little role in the monologue, pretending to be Oprah (thankfully not actually trying to do Oprah...) and the punch line of Emma being delighted rather than upset that Kyle was her "surprise guest," was one of my favorite parts of the night.

We didn't see much of Alex, but the view of him in the tight shirt at the goodnights was a nice enough gesture.

With one exception, I thought the show was watchable enough - I laughed a few times, appreciated the effort a few other times. I just wish the sketches weren't so damn long. I know this isn't new for SNL and I know it is a budget issue, but some of these just feel like a slog. If something has one or two ideas, or relies on a cameo, then stretching that cameo out to 5 or 6 minutes doesn't work. One of the few times it has for me is in the John Mulaney episodes because he knows how to stretch the material out.

Emma Stone reminded me a bit of the old Buck Henry episodes - they feel very comfortable with her and could just wheel out what they wanted, knowing she'd pop in and out and not need a showcase. She clearly loves being there, and that went a long way tonight.

Cold open - I'm glad they are still staying away from Trump and trying to focus on other topics. Tackling Lori Loughlin wasn't a bad idea...and this wasn't as thuddingly unfunny as the Jussie Smollett sketch a few weeks ago. I didn't really laugh though. It was another of those "we're doing this so we can say we talked about a topical celebrity issue" (and possibly also because the cut for time college admissions sketch a few weeks ago got a huge amount of Youtube views). They could have cut a few minutes. If we were getting Julian Assange I'd wondered if Bill Hader might cameo, but Michael Keaton is certainly a big "get" in his own right.

Posters - The worst of the night for me. It just seemed to go on and on and on, and Emma's porn star voice drove me up the wall. Putting this near the start of the show was an...interesting idea?

Fashion Coward - Good idea, and well made. It ran a little too long. Cecily's narration was just right, as always. My favorite part was BAIL BAIL BAIL.

Ladies room - I remember the song and video but not enough to know all the references. This was good cheesy fun and made me laugh a few times, especially their insistence on using the dressing room as a bathroom even after learning it wasn't a bathroom.

Royal baby shower - Another one that went on forever. The elephant in the room is Meghan Markle - if they know they have no one who can play her, then how about a) casting an actress who can or b) just stop doing these sketches? I did laugh at Emma Stone as the drunken ex, and when Beck's Prince Charles eagerly arrived after his mother fell, hoping she'd died and he'd now get to be King.

The View - This must be the first time all women have played women in this sketch. I hate The View, I hate everything about the show and I always have, but I did enjoy the old '90s sketches - Cheri Oteri's Barbara Walters and Tracy Morgan's Star "I"m a lawyer" Jones. This one didn't do much for me, but I did enjoy seeing them skewer the wretched Jenny McCarthy. Kate's Joy Behar also amused me.

Italian wine - This was a loopy, nonsensical mess but was a pleasant enough way to end the night. The hilariously terrible accents are what I'll remember most. "We go to hell maybe for makina dis wine."

Hobbies rap - This one felt a little unfinished to me for some reason; maybe it's just that there have just been so many rap pieces in the last decade. I think I like it more on rewatch. I liked the smelling books part the best (although for me it's magazines - the ones that don't have a perfume smell, anyway).

WU - I actually watched Colin and Che for once. They were alright. I might have laughed once or twice (not as much as Che did). Both of the correspondent pieces were fine. Carrie seems like Aidy is aping some of Stefon's old lines - is that intentional? The Instagram couple can be VERY annoying, but it became genuinely funny when she started getting into how she was going to make out with BTS and Pete Davidson at the afterparty. Mikey tends to sort of move into the same acting rhythms as the person he does the WU pieces with (he does this with Alex Moffat too). It's a nice touch.

The Actress - My favorite piece of the night. Beautifully produced, a funny ending which didn't kill the mood or feel crowbarred in. Emma gave a better performance in this than you will see in many high budget films.

Lori Loughlin never had a memorable personality other than "Aunt Becky" and before that the "girl next door" in 80s movies.  Until this scandal I was unaware how really horrible a person she was!  Emma was so good. "Jared, not with my godson!"  I love how she when was ad libbing her own dialogue she sounded natural but stilted and bad like a porn actor when she said lines from the script and then again in her imagined backstory! "Jared, why is godson sleeping over?"

Okay, I am not familiar with gay porn so my thought "man that one actor is OLD".

It's funny to me that they have had two variations on Aunt Becky this season - with Claire Foy in the Full House pastiche and Kate tonight. Sometimes I feel like Kate's crazy lady characters blur together but she made some cheesy lines genuinely amusing.

(I have probably said this too many times already but I'm so glad the Kate McKinnon wheel of political impressions has stopped spinning for a while - to me she is much more at home in character sketches and silly moments)

I saw a lot of comments asking why he didn't do the accent. I assume he knows he can't (I don't remember Michael Keaton ever doing accents), especially not on live television.  It mostly felt like a fun little cameo where the beard and nostalgia could do the work.

It did kind of make me wish he could host again.

It's been noticed in the media coverage that she's acting like she likes being in the limelight again. She's been telling camera crews they can follow her around all day. She has been signing autographs outside the courthouse and in general playing up being a star.  I think that would had been funny if they captured that. The way Loughlin was written here did nothing for me.

That would have been interesting (I would have preferred that here to when they wrote Bill Cosby as so delusional in the Seth Meyers episode). Here they mostly seemed focused on the idea of her being a bad-ass.

It was so nice of the show to write a sketch especially for me.  I am Fashion Coward.

It was a throwaway line, but when Carrie Krum said, “Say aloha to the beaches of western PA ... go ankle deep in this ice-cold water that stinks,” I got a laugh.  I’m originally from said beaches [sheds a tear of fond remembrance].  I should mention that I don’t remember it stinking, but I do remember those flies!

“Princess of Arizona” made me genuinely lol.  Too bad the rest of the sketch fell just short of being hilarious.

Me, I thought the bad-ass thing was a fresh angle (yet felt like it could be true), and since comedy is all about surprise + truth, it really worked for me. I thought she was by far the funniest "celeb" in the sketch (and Kate's performance was perfect), because it's less surprising to me that Avenatti and Assange would be bad-asses.

Emma Stone is what Lindsay Lohan could have been if she hadn’t gone off the rails.

Nobody does impotent indignation like Keenan (Ladies Room... a song I remember).

I was aware of BTS, and for the first time watched a performance. They are OK, I guess? Not sure what is behind the fanaticism. They seem very manufactured.

Princess of Arizona... perfect.

They got James Cordon right.

”What happened, am I king?” I’ve always thought he lives in a peculiar kind of hell.

I haven’t watched gay porn, but that was hilarious. So dark. Who was Jared? Was that a real gay porn actor? “Hey, it’s godson!” Why do I hear that in Gob’s voice?

*tiny voice* I'd be totally okay shopping at Fashion Coward? I love my zip up sweatshirts! (grey, green, and purple, for when I'm feeling spicy!)...

I commented in the Project Runway thread this week that I have no eye for fashion & can only shop at places with clothes displayed for me & then used Ann Taylor as an example. So I burst out laughing at the end. I actually went yesterday but I promise I bought jewel tones!

SNL really spoke to me this week-I was doing a puzzle during the Hobbies sketch (in a gray T-shirt) & like they said on WU, just watch Law & Order instead of one of my 8000 channels  This made me feel like Emma & I are true BFFs.

I had no thoughts on BTS before the show. They seemed fun & I like fluffy music. At least I’d heard of them. I sort of compared them to my love of NKOTB & would I have slept outside for tickets for them back in the day? Hell yes.

I kept waiting to see what the big deal was with BTS ..... and really got nothing.  The music wasn't that memorable, it was just yet another boy band but with some fancier dance moves.   And it did come off as pretty manufactured, as some of their dance moves were repetitive between songs.  You could have plunked any boy band from the last 25 years on the stage with the same music, died their hair different colors, and you really wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.  Do the members of BTS write their own music and lyrics ? Or are they just the front ?

And I get that most of BTS lyrics aren't in English -- so I didn't really know what they were singing about -- but that's no worse than Greta van Fleet (still have no idea what they were singing about).

If anything, BTS seemed kinda.....outdated to me. Watching their first song felt like I had stumbled on some portal to 1998, back when the dancing boyband thing was actually still a thing.

Their second song was a little more current, but they've got nothing on Melissa V's rap game. More of that please, SNL.
