Last Week Tonight & John Oliver in the Media

Stephen Colbert had a kind of clip show of his campaign coverage last night (hosted by the charming Sam Waterston) and one of his clips from months ago had a bit about declaring a win before the votes are counted and he said maybe we could skip to September and just give the Emmy to John Oliver.  I thought that was funny, since that is how it turned out.

I thought of the Monopoly guy, too :D. Though I do love John's description of the head looking like "a hard-boiled egg disguised as Tom Selleck" :p.

Those facts about Pringles were...interesting. Especially the bit about the guy who came up with the design of the container. Okay, then!

But the drawings. Fantastic XD. Where's that rat erotica guy when you need him, this is a perfect job for him! If Pringles responds to this, that will be truly amazing.

Even while on hiatus, John keeps busy in The Void.

Methinks John has a new obsession after getting busted by Adam Driver.

Pringles has responded -- we will get the answer to what Julius Pringle's body looks like tomorrow.

Here’s one bit of John on The Late Show last night. All three videos are hilarious, but I especially love this one for his Which Muppet Are You? quiz results. (I was as shocked as John. 😂)

I was amazed it didn't get mentioned that as big a Muppet fan as he is, John has already HAD the honor of a project with a Muppet.  One of the best ones too...

Plus, outtakes showing how tickled John really WAS to be doing this...

And Colbert also has his history with that same Muppet...

Did John's reunion appearance on The Bugle a few months ago ACTUALLY somehow not get posted here?  Really?

Set aside an hour to watch this (yes, it's a VISUAL version of the notably "audio newspaper"). It's a good time investment.

Also, new this very week, John spent over an hour with British comedian Richard Herring (who some might know if they saw the season of Taskmaster he was on).  Some parts drag, but John does say some interesting things too.

These are so long, but good, you may want to Cast them to a TV or something.

The podcast link to the proper audio version was posted in The John OLiver: True Brit thread at the time. The Bugle may have given in to this relentlessly visual world, but I have not!

We do get a few treats in the visual abomination though.  First, we get to see the old logo used as a background graphic behind the producer guy. Second, we get to see the white void. Third, we get to see Andy's ridiculous Santa hat (I hadn't remembered this was that long ago--and I should have since I posted in that True Brit thread too... ).

The podcast with the Fishy-named Herring, I don't know if there's an audio version or not.

I haven't read the book yet, but The New York Times Book Review has a front page review of Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty. The opening paragraph is about Last Week Tonight's episode about the subject.

Quote

In April 2019, the comedian John Oliver devoted a segment of his satirical newscast on HBO to the Sacklers, owners of the company that makes the powerful painkiller OxyContin. Public anger toward the family for seeding America’s opioid epidemic was building, and Oliver added to the opprobrium that evening by lampooning statements made by one of its members in court documents that had recently become public. Under the circumstances, you might have expected the Sacklers to feel chastened and lie low. But that would be badly underestimating their callousness.

Jacqueline Sackler, who married into the clan, tried to get Oliver to kill the segment before it aired. When that didn’t work, she sent an angry email to others in the family lamenting that the show was her son’s favorite and complaining that the unwanted media attention was interfering with his high school prospects. “Lives of children are being destroyed,” she railed, apparently unaware how entitled and tone-deaf she sounded.

I guess Jacqueline Sackler only cares about her child's life.

I love that so many museums tried to win. I know they need the money but John Oliver's art collection isn't what they usually go after. I can't wait to see how many people show up to see it. If any of the winners were near me I'd definitely go see them. I do love how many different ways John Oliver is helping people. I really wish more people were as generous as John Oliver.
