Wait a minute! When was she wearing linguine? I would pay to see that! Although I think I'd prefer to see her in fettuccine.

Ha! Good catch. Autocorrect does me in yet again. Although linguine might have been more attractive than the lingerie.

throughout the season, I thought AI was pitching the "Rock 'N ROLL!!!!"   vibe, foreshadowing this result.  The show is trying too hard to be relevant again - and failing.

J'Lo's number was weird.  When she was down on all 4's humping the stage, I felt embarassed for her.  Then she comes back and does the "true Colors" song in a baby voice?  Add in the head-bobbing, twirling thing she was dong in her "toddlers in tiaras"  dress (great call, Hildegard) just made her look pathetic.   She's a beautiful woman, but she needs to have a little restraint.

Jena's pants reminded me of the old-fashioned Kotex and belt combo, before maxipads had adehesive strips.  When you're wearing pants that make people think of menstruation, you've got bad fashion consultants.

Alex Preston  and Jason Mraz were the best part of the evening.

I could not care less about Caleb or Jena.  Most boring final two ever.

Ya know, i always wondered what a $15 million lap dance would be like.

Now, I know.

Lonesome Rhodes, that may be the best line of the season. I made a similar comment to my hubby. We both started to laugh when she was dancing, and then when she was crawling on the floor I commented that she looked like a stripper. I would say the only thing that JLo has done over the years is improve her looks - if you look at pics of her as a flygirl she is almost unrecognizable.

I am happy that Caleb won (though think his coronation song sucks). We skipped some of the performances because 2 hours was just too long and boring. I was reminded of how bad some of the girls were when I couldn't remember their names. And Malaya is just as annoying as ever.

Loved Jessica's duet. I hope though that she decides to update her look - the goth-ish type black hair with the horrible pink needs to be retired. She had some really pretty softer looks in her non performing videos on AI- I really wish she would consider a less harsh look.

Finally, at least AI did the ending right but having several minutes post announcement. I know that is when the winner is supposed to sing, but regardless it lets the audience at home enjoy being part of the celebration. DWTS continues to fall far short in this department.

So a Southern guy beat a teen girl from the northeast?  I wouldn't need to watch the season to predict that outcome.  But having watched the season, I guess I'm okay with that outcome.  I thought they were the two most deserving of making the final, but never did prefer one much over the other.  I would have been equally okay with Jena winning.

Of tonight's performances, my favorites were Jessica with Jennifer Nettles and Jena with Paramore (what I could see of it between all those balloons).

The flashback clips made me realize that I missed Audition Harry. I don't know whether he was getting producer notes to be nicer or he just found it harder to be Harsh Harry when he spent weeks with the same kids and developed fondness for them. I hope it was not that embarrassing "intervention" they did on a results show.

Glad it wasn't Jena. I know she may probably do as well as / maybe better than Caleb, but I didn't consider her voice a winning voice. This season disappointed me. Onto the next

That explains things a bit, Lonesome, otherwise I cannot figure out how his style wins. As rockers go, he doesn't come close to surpassing rockers from the past.  He has absolutely nothing original, so I just don't get it.... However, Jena never did it for me either.

A lackluster year, because I care more that Caleb's family wins more than Jena's camera-ready Mom.

THIS. Caleb is good, but not great imo, but I'm so glad he won - or rather that Jehna didn't. I wonder if many votes were not so much for Caleb, but more for "anyone but Jehna." I think that little twit thought she had it in the bag. As mentioned, I'm guessing too that the prom date BS is going to change pronto.

Caleb's brother's joy warms my cold, black heart.

I did not know that one could get on all fours and twerk. Live and learn; And Holy Mother, that was just awful. And I say that as a JLo fan (for the most part, ...usually.) The dancing was off which was really surprising. Just WTF?

Jehna's pink crotch pants...the worst wardrobe since she wore the underpants/slash/bathing suit bottoms that time on a results show. And to think I almost wore my pink crotch pants last night. : /

Wow--that was the most excrutiating 2 hours I have ever experienced!  JLo was just, well,  just embarrassing.  The idol singers sounded awful as did most of the guests.  Phillip Phillips and John Legend were the only pros who sounded halfway decent, that is until Malaya opened her mouth and ruined the whole song with Legend.  Apparently Jane Lynch was the only "celebrity" in the audience.  Obviously Caleb has had a PR for PC meeting.  The show focused waaaay too much on the judges tonight--really, 2 performances by JLo???  KISS was just sad.  I could continue but you all saw the carnage too so why beat a dead horse?  Just glad the whole thing is over--let the "tore" begin!

Damn that woman got lucky in the genetic lottery.

I don't know about genetics.

.  yearbook.jpg

I mean, she was cute in high school, but it's obvious much of her current look is artificial, and she's done everything possible to neutralize her heritage.

I had a much longer post about the finale, but my dog gets jealous of my laptop and deleted the whole darn thing, and it's not worth re-typing.  So I'll just say that J Lo's bitchface when her little pet didn't win was almost worth watching this wretched season.

Well, I'm surprised in a good way that Jena didn't win.  Guess that contrary to judgery opinion, the listening public does indeed like to understand the words to a song once in a while.

Richard Marx looked seriously pissed.

It's hard to believe Jena is a fan of that wannabe-Gwen Stefani person who sings for Paramour.  In most of the performances, the band outsang the idol singer.  This was not the case with the Paramour girl.  Jena sang rings around her and I don't think Jena is a good singer.

Is this a change from previous seasons to include everyone in the top 13?  I thought that they only did the top 10 or so.  And where was Majesty?  She would have been a much better choice to sing with John Legend.  The entire song was about six keys to high for Malaya.

Aside from the dervish twirling at the end, I would have preferred an all-judge + Randy singalong for the two hours instead of what we got.  It was nice to hear what that song sounded like without Stevie the Goat bleating it out.

Alex Preston  and Jason Mraz were the best part of the evening.

I downloaded Jason Mraz's new single as soon as he started singing it and even pre-ordered his album. Can you tell I'm a huge fan of his?

I thought Keith Urban's guitar was going to burst into flames during 'Go Your Own Way.' Wow - that was great! I wonder if he's ever played that song before, or if he just learned it in the past few weeks. That was truly entertaining and I have no doubt that his shows must be well worth the ticket price.

During the little video segment that led up to Jena and Caleb receiving their new Mustangs, I could not recall who Majesty was. Absolutely did not remember her for one second. Thank goodness Sam said her name; I never would have known who she was otherwise. Same for the other female contestants other than MK and Malaya - I have no idea who they are (and I watched the whole season!).

As for Caleb - I just don't care that he won. Only time will tell if he'll have a successful career. I don't think I'll seek out his music on my own; if a song of his happens to pop up on any of the channels of Sirius XM that I listen to, well then bully for him but otherwise...meh. As for Jena, the sooner she's forgotten the better. I'm glad her music teacher scored a new car, though!

Just as I think Keith knows the lyrics to every song ever recorded, he can also effortlessly create a blazing guitar solo to every song.  It's part his DNA.

The biggest surprise of the night for me was when Malaya walked out on stage to sing with John Legend.  I had to do a double take!  She looked so adult and mature, I wasn't sure I heard them right when they introduced her.  That said, it sounded to my untrained ear that the song was in a key that was too high for her.

I loved seeing the judges jam in spite of Jennifer's dress, hair and jumping around.  She was totally trying to copy Cyndi Lauper on True Colors (and not doing very well), but I thought she sounded good during Go Your Own Way.  Loved Keith, too.

The less said about Jennifer's solo, the better.

I preferred Caleb to Jena, but didn't consider him currant until someone on the other thread listed some Southern rock bads that are becoming quite popular now and found them on You Tube.  Unfortunately, I don't trust the recording company to give him good songs like the ones from those other bands.  Maybe after his contract is up.

Irene said she learned plenty during her time on American Idol. "American Idol doesn’t just teach you how to be a good singer, it teaches you how to be a good performer and be good with press and to dress well and to know how to speak.  It makes you a well-rounded person.”

source:  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/idol-worship/american-idol-runner-up-jena-706433

Hmmmm, she speaks as if those lessons have already occurred???

Also love that they refer to her by her middle name as if it is her last name.

So telegraphed from day one, so disappointing - not so much with the winner who is so very "meh" but the fact that the show doesn't even try to pretend anymore .... they have an agenda and they push it from the get go.

I think I may break up with Idol for reals this time ........

Caleb: That’s the biggest crowd that I’ve ever performed in front of, so it was just kind of a surreal moment where I almost lost it right there (at the beginning). Literally for one second, everything almost went out of my brain: how to sing, how to breath, how to fart — like all that stuff. ... Yet, I had a blast, and I think that’s the biggest thing ...

And the always amusing (to me, anyway) Michael Slezak's take:  http://tvline.com/2014/05/21/american-idol-season-13-finale-recap-who-won-caleb-johnson-jena-irene/

I think many people voted for Caleb simply because they didn't want Jena to win, not because they actually like Caleb. Although what's interesting is that most people on this board are happy with the Caleb win, whereas one look over at the boards on TVLine suggests otherwise.

I was one of the online auditioners this year (just like Alex) and I didn't even make it for a callback, so I am perfectly happy with someone like Caleb beating me. I know many disagree but I think he's one of the most talented performers to ever hit the Idol stage. I would put him up there with Kelly, Carrie, and Adam for sure. It will be interesting to see what Interscope does with him. I highly doubt his album will be ready in August. I hope Interscope doesn't abandon him like they essentially did to Candice. They will probably only focus on Scotty and Phillip since their type of music is more current and relevant whereas Candice and Caleb are old-school. Shame 'cause I think both of them are far better singers than Scotty or Phillip and had to audition 3 times just to even get the contract.

I purposely did not watch last night show, but thanks to the magic of YouTube I didn't have to. Some thoughts:

  • Slapout and Jennifer Nettles made "Wrecking Ball" palatable. Good luck in the future, Slapout. I downloaded "Blue Eyed Lie" in your honor.
  • Alex again proves how skilled he is as a mimic as he sounded exactly like Jason Mraz.
  • The judges singing together? Now where have I seen that before?
  • Ryan "singing?" Next fall, watch for Carson Daly's solo EP.
  • Sam in five years may be another Phillip Phillips, but it's going to take a whole lot of work.
  • Who stole Malaya's ritalin? Plus, she was completely off on her duo with John Legend. With the proper medication, she could be a Disney kid.
  • Speaking of mimicking, Hayley Williams better watch out for Jeeeena's stage mom who may put out a hit on her so her daughter can be the new lead singer.
  • Demi and the girl singers were meh. Aloe Blacc and the guys? Too much awkward on that stage.
  • Didn't want to watch Caleb and KISS sing together. Fat, bloated, and old fashioned is boring to watch, and Caleb wasn't all that great either.

I liked the dancing from her solo performance but not the outfit or the singing. Her singing on the judges' song sounded so babyish, it was really weird. Slezak thinks her microphone may have had built-in auto tune in it. She actually didn't sound bad or anything, but I do wonder if that's only because maybe her mic is auto tuned at all times.

I think they've always included the top 12 or 13  in the finale--I know that Jorge Núñez, Alexis Grace, and Jasmine Murray performed on the season 8 finale.  It's only the tour that is restricted to the top 10.

Hooray, hooray! Back on the board for a few minutes (I've had company at my house for the past week and dang those people just won't let their Mama snark!)

Malaya without the braces? Gorgeous. But still Sue Heck to the c

OMG I worship this comment so much. You read what was hiding in my mind the whole time. And why the HECK did they let her sing in the upper register? It would have been so much better if she does did a harmony with John Legend. The way it sounded - she needed to be in her PJS in front of the mirror singing into a hairbrush.

I'm a big PP2 fan and so pleased to see him doing so well. My baby granddaughter was mesmerized by his voice (ironically she used to respond in utero to the "Home" song and it was playing when she was born -accidentally though).

Randy playing the bass will always remind me of the Bear in the band at Chuckie Cheese/ Showbiz - or Country Bear Jamboree for you Disney type people. And I had to ask my daughter who was singing "True Colors" when it started - JLOs face was facing the opposite way and it sure didn't sound like her (what was that babydoll voice? She was just humping the ground ten minutes earlier in her underwear)

JENAH#%$## will need a new stylist pronto. WTH was up with the pants? Wonder where she will end up. She's now in for the long haul because being the runner up in AI is not going to get you too far without a whole lot of work. And it was ironic when she was singing with Hayley from Paramore who she tried to imitate the whole season.

Pretty happy for a Caleb win. And his brother with the painted KISS face gave me happy goosies. I did enjoy his initial stunned look and then the mini breakdown - then he took it back and started singing away - the sign of an experience performer. I wish him good things and hope he'll find appropriate stuff to sing (Imagine Dragon-ish perhaps)

Alas, we will have to come back to this forum over the ensuing months to catch up on any AI news - I have so enjoyed reading y'alls mildly snarky but hilarious views! HONDS OPP!!!!

First time that I haven't watched the finale and that is thanks to JLO.  I did follow along on MJ's blog though and my husband, who apparently does not mind looking at JLO at all, shouted that Caleb had won.  We both preferred Caleb to Jena and are members of team #anyone-but-Jena.  Of course I've loved every one of you making fun of the way she speaks so she did contribute to my enjoyment of the season after all.   Regarding the finale, isn't this the first time that the previous year's winner did not make an appearance?  I think Lee DeWyze was in the audience for season 10, some sort of issue he had with the producers if I remember correctly.  And this may be the first time after her season that Carrie Underwood did not appear.  I think all former winners should at least be on hand to support the show.  I know there were a few former contestants in the audience but other than P2 I don't think any winners were on hand.

Well, I must be getting old or something. I really liked Caleb's single! I think it's incredibly well-suited to his voice and sounds... dare I say it... current!

Miles ahead of what they had for JENA, IMO. I think it's easily the best single since "Home" (which, to be fair, was only two years ago and is in my opinion the best winner single ever). Low bar, but it's well cleared.

Also, it was strange but highly refreshing to watch a winner's coronation song that didn't involve snot or tears or a cracking voice. Good on him!

Am I the only one who was hoping for some rich harmonies on "All of Me" instead of trading verses? I think Malaya could use some practice blending. Her solo portions were not pleasant to my ears. I think she could have sung the song in John's key and sounded gorgeous. It sits mid-range, and the lower notes are what make the song so gloomy and beautiful. It just sounded screechy and whiny in that register, and the power of the song was lost for me.

Whoever chose the life-size balloons should be fired. It looked like a citrus burst on the wide shots, but we couldn't see anyone! I looked vaguely claustrophobic in there.

Hot damn, add P2 to the Mt. Rushmore of Idol stars. That's what - 3 mega-hit singles in a row? That song, along with his other two singles, are on my radio constantly. He just sings damn good tunes. I guess there really was room for a younger Dave Matthews in the music world.

Good to see Jess again. Still wish she'd made the final with Caleb. She was my favorite for the year.

Alex and Jason were the class of the field.

And finally, so happy JENA didn't win. Caleb's been the most  consistent and I can't deny him a hard-won victory.

Oh, please God, can we retire the word, "body" and all its iterations being sung as, "BIDE-dee?" ThnxK.,

While we're retiring things, I've had enough of Jehna's, "Come see me on TORE." Make it stop. And while I'm bitching, enough with the porkpie hats and any pants that are crotch-centric.

Malaya = Sue Heck = nailed it.

I thought Alex and Jess were great, but then I would think that.

I'm seriously wondering if JLo had a cocktail before that blue lingerie First Love fiasco. She says that she doesn't drink, so only one would eff her up I'm guessing. I just can't explain why that spectacle was so, so very bad.

So was that Paramore little twit fresh from rolling out of bed in her jammies and onto the stage? Agreed that she may need a bullet proof vest. Me thinks Jehna's MOM!!!! may hire a hit.... or... you know... accidents happen. *cough*

Ryan has some huge nads to sing that song. Bless his heart.  Not exactly sure why he did that to himself when he didn't have to.

As mentioned, I'm guessing too that the prom date BS is going to change pronto.

LOLZ!  I think there will be some interesting stuff happening on the tour (TORE in Jeena world)  with her mom and her probably acting like she is the co-winner anyhow.  Up until that moment, she was on equal ground with him.  Suddenly, not so much.  I think mamma Irene looked stunned when the winner was announced and it wasn't her daughter.  They thought they had it in the bag I believe.

The only time I ever went to see the group in concert was in Toronto with David Cook, David Archuleta, Jason Castro, and the others who I can't remember so much now.   I doubt I would go to see these ones.  Wish I would have went to the Kellie Pickler season.

In addition, I think that JLo is trying to stay relevant in a world that is All things Beyonce.  She is definitely trying to copy that style.  I give her massive props for doing what she can do in those high heels though.

Did anyone notice if her boyfriend/back up dancer was dancing with her last night?

I don't know if she was just saying this or not but in a post-show interview, Jena said she knew Caleb would win (though probably more for the reason he is a white Southern guy, not necessarily because of his talent or performances). And Caleb said that Jena's mom told him, in a joking manner, that she couldn't picture him as the American Idol because of the way he looks and everything. I think Jena's mom probably is more disappointed that Jena didn't win than Jena is. But she's a mom after all, I'm sure she can't help but be upset her daughter didn't win.

I don't care whether Harry CJ's tux jacket was out of season or not; it looked SO good on him!  Best part of the whole night.  I wish that the camera had shown him playing the piano and keyboard instead of constantly zeroing in on JLo.  She looked like (and yes, I know she got sweaty and messy from her workout....er...performance) someone had broken up with her at prom, her eyemakeup was running, her hair looked like ass.  They pay makeup people and hair people, why didn't someone fix that.

From the metropolitan Detroit area so was cheering for Jena, Malaya and Sam, who was born here. Didn't really watch every week, was Jena's mom really a stage mom? Jena being under 18, didn't her mom need to be there with her? I thought Jena looked genuinely happy for Caleb last night. And sorry, I could never get behind anyone who refers to anyone as a retard, let alone the jerk's fans. Also wish JLo would go away already. Her "dance" or gyration was embarrassing and inappropriate, as was her costume. Certainly don't watch AI to constantly have the camera on JLo. And lastly, wish the producers or whoever would have let Harry give his honest critiques of the contestants like he did in the beginning. Their complaining that he was being mean to the little snowflakes was irritating. At least young Sam took the things he said to heart and improved by doing so. I wish Sam and Alex all the luck in the world!
