chaifan July 31, 2018 Share July 31, 2018 National Doughnut (or donut) Day is in June. This started to get some play in the news a few years ago, or at least that's when I first noticed, and they would do stories on the doughnut dollies. So I was somewhat familiar with that, but I never knew they were so close to the front lines. Damn. And I watched China Beach when it was on, but I don't remember the doughnut dollies on that show. Anyways, I'm not a huge doughnut fan, but when one is warm fresh from the fryer - yum! I was also a bit disappointed that Sarah Jane didn't score any points for hers looking so nice. Both hers and Ryan's were underbaked, but Ryan's looked awful - shape, color, no discernable sugar on top. I could tell Ryan, Sarah Jane and John (of the bloody hand) were all at risk this episode. They are all rather inconsistent, maybe scoring a hit on one of the three bakes for the last few episodes, but really failing on the other two. The other bakers have been more consistent. What season did the showstoppers start becoming real showstoppers? 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/70540-s03e07-sweet-dough/page/2/#findComment-4539542

andromeda331 July 31, 2018 Share July 31, 2018 Doughnuts! Definitely loved seeing what they came up with. Love the history info my grandpa was one of the many American soldiers over there and no doubt eating doughnuts. it was great hearing about the Doughnut Dollies women have done so much especially in wars without recognition. It really sucks. They deserve to be recognized and honored. Sorry to see Sarah-Jane go, it was the right choice but they are all so likable its hard to see them go. Toothbrush August 5, 2018 Share August 5, 2018 (edited) I like cream-filled donuts, but not jam-filled, and prefer glazed or iced donuts with no filling. Buttermilk Drops are my all-time favorite, and were my son's first taste of a sweet food when he was a little less than a year old. I saw a story that mentioned Doughnut Dollies on some show (Food: Fact or Fiction, maybe), where they were investigating if American soldiers in Europe were called Dough Boys because of the doughnut (they weren't). I'm glad that we are seeing some of these history lessons again; always found them interesting in later, but previously-aired, series. I will miss Sarah Jane, but she seemed to spend at least the last couple of weeks anticipating being sent home, and I think that affected her performance. She is adorable and seems very sweet. Ryan was wildly inconsistent and hung on for another couple of weeks thanks to 1 pie, albeit an evidently incredible pie, but 1 pie nonetheless. And John's injured finger, but mostly the pie. I'll miss his dry sense of humor & seeing his adorable daughter. LilJen May 7, 2019 Share May 7, 2019 (edited) The town in which I live has a "heritage days" parade every year, and every year someone dresses up as the (supposed original) WWI Salvation Army doughnut girl. And if you arrive early enough you can get a freshly fried doughnut. WRT women in wartime, I used to hang out with a woman who was in the WAVES in WWII (the Navy recruited women for its stateside operations when most personnel were overseas). She was incredibly proud of the work she had done. I, too, talk to the animals. I tried to get my bunny-loving hound excited about the bunny on screen but she was fast asleep.
